since they live in the same house, I imagine them fighting over bills and who's turn to clean the bathroom and, one always complaining about the girls he brings home.
3:40 You know you're a geek when... you can play the theme from an 80s adventure game from memory. (Of course, I'm nearly as much of a geek for recognizing the Space Quest 3 theme variation offhand...)
No idea. I recognised the theme as Space quest, but then I was playing around with the space quest series round about 1998. Come to think of it, the test recordings I made right before trying to do some gaming videos on my channel contain a bunch of things, but one of the things I was testing was how to record DOS games - and the game I used to test this with was Space Quest 5... So... Yeah, I guess recent experience with such things helps a lot. XD
The piano sounds like a harpsichord, the harpsichord sounds like a pipe organ, the pipe organ sounds like an accordian, and I dont know WTF the violin sounds like...
Using that potentiometer on the left with the longs legs at 7:12, you can tune the keyboard up or down. If you swap it out for a larger value/range potentiometer, you can detune the keyboard an entire octave or more in either direction. This same potentiometer is used in the entire PT lineup as far as I know. I made this modification to my PT-10, and it produces some incredible bass notes now. Since the value of the potentiometer changes the microprocessor's clock speed, it will affect everything connected to it, so the tempo of ROM cartridge songs will also be affected. I have noticed a slight bit of lag in the keys if you make the pitch too low, and there's a point where the microprocessor's synthesis will just stop functioning due to the incredibly low clock speed. Just thought this might make a cool topic for a future video, since it applies to all PT keyboards.
As a drummer/guitarist, I really enjoy and appreciate these keyboard vids! I've dabbled w friends keyboards in the past but after watching your channel I want to buy a nice new one and learn how to play it. Thanks for your inspiration!
I really enjoy the short compositions at the end of these videos, they all sound great! I especially liked this one, that particular Celesta and Violin sound work really well together.
I have an MT-28 and confirmed that connecting pins 90 and 46 on the CPU turns on sustain, and pins 90 and 47 turns it off. The MT-28, PT-100, and PT-180 are all the same hardware family. I'd trace those CPU pins out to a convenient spot to solder and sustain away! I love your vids, that shot of 80's you getting his PT-100 is great. The PT-80 was my first Casio and I still have it and love it.
I suggest emailing David this fact, and provide evidence or proof, he's way more likely to respond on there, or even see an email at all! I'd love to see a revisit where he builds a sustain mode into it!
Ok, a PT 100. I think that you surely has a nostalgia overload about this keyboard, I really wanted to see you with that keyboard in your collection because of that photography that you occasionally used in your videos. Actually I had a surprise with this review, because I don't ever knew about that is possible hacking this keyboard. Now I imagine what a potential can be got this keyboard in the proper hands. Nice review David and keep doing that this series stays so entertaining as this video.
I've been following your channel for a while now. While the videos are always great, It's been even more awesome to see how your playing and composition skills have improved over the years! Keep up the good work!
Really appreciate that you still find some time to do these videos! Love them so much! This thing sounded awesome. That violin sounded really cool and unique.
Finally some 8-bit keys! :D Nice intro music and multi track composition in the end! I'm always amazed how good tunes you make with these simple keyboards.
The range of notes kind of reminds me of the frequency range of the SN76489 chip found in the Master System; the lowest frequency it can make (from what I heard) is 110Hz (which I believe is A in the first octave).
The same chip is in the Tandy 1000, which I've been trying to compose music for on my new game. But it is tough because of the lack of bass notes. However, it absolutely has WAY more notes than this keyboard I'm reviewing!
110Hz is an A2. Open A string on a bass is 55Hz; first octave A, the one below an open B string, would be 27.5Hz. That's barely audible for most people, if the sound system is even able to reproduce it.
Not sure if youve covered it yet, but I remember playing with my friends casio from 88(?) vintage or thereabouts that had a sampling feature. It would let you record up to 3 seconds or so to playback. We used to prank call people and play fart sounds and other ‘hilarities’.
I love your work in 8 bit keys and 8 bit guy! I would like to see a key-tar episode, I have always wanted one since I was a kid in the 80’s and am curious about the history/origin of the key-tar.
I liked your little song at the end, as usual. David have you ever considered writing music for someone else's retro-style RPG? it'd be a great fit and you have a fun imagination for writing old-school/era accurate 8-Bit songs and to me your songs really fit the RPG genre. Nice moods and the way the songs are arranged, is great oldschool stuff. I'd personally love to hear a whole JRPG soundtrack written by you, covering many moods and intensities etc
I recently acquired one of this, second hand piano for kid. I had to clean out the corrosion in battery area. I don't have a wall power supply or additional cassette. But gladly it works! And thanks to this video I got more understand it more. Amazing remix by the way 👍
I know that it's not really a keyboard, but I'd love to see a review on any one of Casio DG models. Great video as always, glad to see another one on this channel!
Great video! I'm sure you been asked about the CZ-101 more than once, but I'd love to hear your opinion on that keyboard's fascinating sounds/design as well as phase distortion synthesis in general. I understand that you typically prefer to review amateur keyboards, but I think that would make for a really cool video! Thanks again for the quality entertainment! Cheers!
The piano sounds like a harpsichord but the harpsichord sounds like pipe organ and the pipe organ sounds like a bag pipe and so does the violin the flute sounds like a slide flute the clarinet sounds like a flute the reed sounds like a synth and the celesta sounds like a xylophone

I like to pretend the 8-Bit Guy and the 8-Bit Keys guy are identical twins who live in identical houses
Wait they aren't?
Like board james and AVGN?
Pretty sure they're triplets . . . although I haven't seen their _other_ brother *awesomeairguns* in quite some time.
since they live in the same house, I imagine them fighting over bills and who's turn to clean the bathroom and, one always complaining about the girls he brings home.
they even share the same wife :-)
Hardware restorer, game programmer, RUclips Superstar, musician. David truly is the Modern Retro Renaissance Man!
Nice to see a new episode after such a long time :D Congratulations!
Holy cow your intro music gets more and more wild with each episode
Eee, I missed "8-Bit Keys"! You are my go-to channel to let out my inner nerd, because both of your channels fascinate me!

I've waited so long for your video the waits are worth it!! Keep it up Dave:)
Great to see this channel still active!!
Yay! Another 8-Bit keys video! Also, your intro music is amazing!
Andres Bravo It seems to be different from earlier videos. Not the tune, only the sound.
@@johnfrancisdoe1563 It sounds like its been done on an Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)
Thank you very much for another Keys episode 👍👍 Always a pleasure to watch.
you're back! excellent video as always.
I got one of these for Christmas when I was a kid. This brings back many happy memories. Thank you so much.
The piano sounds like a harpsichord, the harpsichord sounds like a pipe organ, the pipe organ sounds like an accordian, and I dont know WTF the violin sounds like...
Thats the issue with pulse waves, they're not very different.
The violin sounds like a cheap melodica
Welcome back David. I've missed these videos.
You really are multi-talented! Bravo!!!
That song at the end was pretty good
I love your videos!!! My son watches your videos almost everyday.
Finally a new 8-bit keys ep! Thank you so much!
5:15 And now, Polka King Frankie Yankovic presents, the theme music from _Star Wars_ .
He would!
I loved your song! These videos keep me motivated to play music.
The music you played on the keyboard, I like this!
Underrated channel. Love your work on both channels
Glad to see a new episode. Love your stuff. 👍🏼
So glad to see an 8bit keys episode!
Great new video 8-Bit Keys. Hope to see many more.
Huzzah!!! New 8-bit keys!
I made it to the 100th like
Holy cow! That song you played at the end! Beautiful!!

I really enjoy the short compositions at the end of these videos, they all sound great! I especially liked this one, that particular Celesta and Violin sound work really well together.
I had a small monophonic Casio keyboard, too. Thanks for the great video.
Yaey your backk!
Also epic new intro!
I totally headbanged to the intro tune.
Great to have you back on this channel David. I could watch these all day.
Love that Space Quest 3 tune in there =), also great to see a new 8bit keys episode, feels like forever.
Stick around for the next episode in 3 to 8 months 😜
Jokes aside glad to see your 8bit keys still alive
Oh my god that Star Wars theme is pure gold hahahaa
It sounds like it should be called "clowns with lightsabers" or something lol
I want that file, it's pure meme quality

Soon to be heard in The Mandalorian, Kenobi, Book Of Boba, and Rogue Squadron.
No headphone jack? According to apple, this is future tech, not being cheap.
See? Another example showing Apple is not ahead but way far behind. Casio did that decades ago!!!
I'D BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR
Casio = 1
Apple = 0
HahahahhahHhahahahahHhhhHhHahahahaahahahaahahaaghaaaaaa
Well... for sure it's not about being cheap ( in Apple ).
OMFG that *is* a horrible rendition of the Star Wars theme, hahaha. Please, rip it and make it available to download!
Load it up to Spotify hahahaha
Yes, oh my God it's so needed. Perfect for all crappy royalty-free star wars vids
But it was pretty cute and funny.
@Max Pain imagine someone that convention pulling out this keyboard and dancing stupid to that music
its so cute sounding!
"Thats it for the moment!" Are you turning into Techmoan?
Nah, I think it's a sign of the times
This is the second video he's said that!
Yeah, I wanted to hear him imitate a British accent!
"As ever, thanks for watching."

Your new intro is amazing

thanks for making my day

The Star Wars track reminds me of an album I’ve heard called “Music Inspired by Star Wars and Other Galactic Funk.”
A well done multi-track recording for the return of 8-Bit Keys!
Been waiting for an upload here, Dave!
Thanks!

Please David, keep going on this channel, you are the best and there is still so many 8-bit fans out here :) !!!!!
Best multitrack song ever in an 8 bit keys video. Excellent work, David.
Got my fixxxx , loved the episode
Man I love it when you make music with your keyboards, its the icing on the cake!
Really appreciate that you still find some time to do these videos! Love them so much! This thing sounded awesome. That violin sounded really cool and unique.
Thank you so much for using my theme! I love it, man!

Nice intro music and multi track composition in the end! I'm always amazed how good tunes you make with these simple keyboards.

I once watched somebody play Super Mario Bros. with one of those sampling keyboards. It got hilarious. I wonder if it was one of those Casio models?
Gene on _Bob's Burgers_ has a keyboard like that.

That SW theme rendition is dope! It should be everyone's next ringtone! ;)
