The barrel grooves are called rifling. Spinning the projectile makes it stable in flight. Your drone sounds dodgy mate. Have you registered with the fun spoilers?
I pass this place every day to go to work.... never been this close but often thought how great it would be to work in these top offices when a huge storm hit. Thanks for your time doing this vid.
I remember back in the 80's visiting one of the Solent Forts - Spitbank Fort, it was open to the public back then. The admission cost included the boat trip out there. It was pretty much in it's original condition back then, was a really interesting place to visit. You guys would have found it very interesting. Sadly it's since been redeveloped into an expensive hotel.
The gun is an Armstrong Whitworth, hexagonal bore. The Fort is administered by Peter Ashley activity centre from one of the forts along the hill to the east. (Fort purbrook? ). They may be willing to organise a tour for a small fee. The tour would include the civil defence control room which was last used as the control centre dealing with the aftermath of the hurricane in the late 80s. In Fort Nelson you can buy one of the Portsmouth papers series which provides more detail on the forts on the hill.
The Redoubt you reference in this video is Farlington Redoubt. It had a partner redoubt called Crookhorn Redoubt. Both were there to add an extra layer of defence for Fort Pubrook, being as it was the end of the line. Farlington suffered severe subsidence during construction and was never finished, as was Crookhorn. Both were connected to Fort Pubrook via tunnels, both now gone. I've worked in Fort Nelson and Fort Pubrook so have been lucky enough to see places in them that the public dont get to see.
Hi chaps, enjoy your videos, I live in Portsmouth and grew up on the slopes of the hill and for all the kids that grew up in the housing estates the hill was our playground and very lucky we were too with the views and all history up there, can remember going past fort southwick during the 70s and seeing armed police guarding the entrance to southern tunnel, I have only been inside fort Nelson but well worth a visit.
Drive past this almost everyday, great to see some history on this. Thanks dudes! On a side note I used to play Airsoft at fort Widley and that bit at 4:21 with the chair by the window as I recall we used to enter through the window as part of one of the game scenarios. Looks like much of the overgrowth has been cut back since I played there about 5 years ago now. The bit at about 4:40 is indeed a firing point there's a walkway running the length of that, that then moves into a smaller outside courtyard type thingy :)
you shoulda just gone in main gate your allowed .. theres an equestrian center up top a rock climbing wall in part of the main barrack block some where and the tunnels are great for an explore used t play airsoft in parts of it you missed the best parts lol and just up the road is another one where the lower levels used to be wartime and cold war command control bunkers also used in recent times for another airsoft place . with a bit of detective work on google u can even find maps of the tunnels ect lol you lucky it was sheep in the moat it used to be goats ... the open area was a mortar pit and most of the original cannons ect were faced inland to protect portsmouth from potential attack by the french if they approached from inland which never happened hence thier all called palmerstons follies
Damn you, gents! I had to nip up the shops and get some bacon, to make a sandwich. The power of suggestion, eh? For info, you could give Portsmouth Council a bell.
Guard sheep, not as frightening as guard dogs. Sad that the elements are destroying the outside and black mold is destroying the inside. Investment needed.
ruclips.net/video/XbRRNxn3aDE/видео.html looks at ground level. you can see the top of the covered window. the current ground level ends higher than in the past. up to several floors underground.

Dubbed over the drone video 😸

thats a nice view to wake up to.
Did you not walk a few minutes more to the West and go to Fort Nelson and the Royal Armouries? Great place, explains a lot about the forts generally.
What a place that is, it so needs to be rescued.
Looks like Chris traded in the Transit for a Helicopter!!! 😂😏💯👍🏼
Good video... I live in Portsmouth, nice to see you exploring the local history. 👍🏼
Hi Ian, I met you at War & Peace. I live 1/2 mile away from Fort Widley.

I visited Fort Widley in 1978, when it was open to the public. It was in decent condition then but seems to have deteriorated rather badly since then.
That’s sad to hear
The side on the road is the BACK of the fort. They were designed to protect Portsmouth from attack from the north.
another great video of another great location well done
Good to see you guys back in my home city again 😊✌
The grooves inside the barrel is called the rifling
Rifling. Those are the lands and grooves.
Thanks IKS
What a difference 25 years makes. I visited Fort Widley when I was married, it used to be in a lot better condition than that. :(
Wow, very impressive, shame you couldn't get in there, like the look of those "bunker" looking buildings in the bank seen with the drone! 👌
Nice explore guys. Like the history. Thanks for sharing.
Enjoyed that peeps 👏
you should of checked out Fort Nelson just up the road a bit.
Love the helicopter sound
What a mega place! Would love to see more money put into preserving this building. Kerp up the fab work. X
the churchillian does really good cheesy chips too
Rifling in the bore of the cannon
I Think somewhere about on FB is a group for Fort Widley and that is is open to the public at certain times.
Haha I used to live around here, I would have noticed you guys as well if I saw an old transit
What happens in the transit stays in the transit.
You should have known about Mick's burger van mate, has fed many explorers

Welcome back to Portsmouth.
Hi is. Think thats probably a Armstrong muzzle loader gun
The French attack 😂, apologies for my sarcasm to all. Great video.
i think you'll find that plastic guttering wasn't available when they built the fort . And im sure it wont have lasted as long
Damn you, gents! I had to nip up the shops and get some bacon, to make a sandwich. The power of suggestion, eh?
