It's crazy how people have either forgotten about this or don't even know it was a thing that happened. Chuck Austin was a former college football player and aspiring wrestler who used to run little shows in his hometown and had all of about six months actual training or legit ring experience. He drove down to a then WWF house show in Tampa Florida in December of 1990 and managed to talk the road agent or whoever into letting him work as enhancement talent in a tag match with Lanny Poffo against the Rockers. In the finish of the match he didn't know how to take Jannetty's Rocker Dropper and bumped forehead first on the mat with all of Marty's weight on his neck. Surprise surprise, he ended up paralyzed. Eventually the issue settled out of court for ten million and led to the WWF more carefully vetting the workers they used on an appearance basis to drop falls to their established talent and was at least an indirect factor in eventually starting the whole developmental system that came about later.
I’m a retired professional motocross racer. _[that being said]_ the motocross boot is the stiffest, hardest, most unforgiving piece of footwear available… at Wrestlemamia 12, Shawn Michaels kicked Brett twice in the face with AXO motocross boots on _(the same kinda Boots Ricky Carmichael was wearing as a Pro Circuit/SplitFire/Kawasaki racer back in 1997)_
Bret v Brock Bret v Angle Bret v Bryan Bret v Punk Bret v Kane Bret v Cena Bret v Batista Bret v Mysterio Imagine the endless matches we would have had if bret was injured. People wanna talk about bret getting over what bill did, imagine someone hurting you and you losing millions. Before people open their mouths, they should try putting themselves in other's shoes.
I think Bret would have loved to work with Kane. He usually has strong opinions about anybody if they are the slightest bit reckless in the ring, but I don't think Bret has ever complained about the Big Red Machine. I think it's also a testament, since big men often don't know their own strength, and early 2000s Kane was about as strong as they come. Even if he were slightly reckless with his size and strength, he could have injured a lot of people. But overall, he is near the top of everyone's list when it comes to safe performers, which is really a testament to his skill. I know he did have 1 match with Isaac Yankem, but that doesn't compare to what a full blown feud with Kane would have been like.
@@aspectra very true. Bret has gone on record saying he likes working with big dudes. Also yes in 95 Glenn Jacobs went as Isaac yankem. He had one match with Bret yes. If Bret had stayed in WWE in 98, no doubt we would have gotten Bret v kane, Angle, Edge, you name it, it would have been classics..

Bret Hart v. Brock Lesnar would've been a match for the ages. Bret's technical and strategic skills going against the unstoppable monster in Brock Lesnar would've been epic. Wouldve felt like Wolverine v. Hulk
This may seem stupid, but it's interesting to hear Bret talk about his gear. It seemed strange that he would wear trunks on the outside when he also had the singlet and long tights. Things must've gotten pretty hot down there if you know what I mean.
I know that ppl say that Bret should "get over" what Goldberg did to him. Those people can't put themselves in his place for even 30 seconds--how would one handle getting a concussion that ultimately affected his/her livelihood? Or better yet, a debilitating stroke? Yes, accidents happen but Goldberg was known by his peers to be dangerous to work with. I have the utmost respect for Bret's professionalism and loved watching him during his active years--still enjoy watching his matches.
On Chuck Austin: 1.) it was Marty’s finishing move that injured him 2.) the guy took that bump so bad granted it’s very sad what happened but he did hurt himself 3.) as soon as Marty did that move on him he rolled him over within a second or 2 there was no time to have a conversation saying his neck was broken. Marty should’ve just pinned him. That move was his finisher there was no reason to jump off the top rope on him. It also doesn’t even look like Shawn touched him at all when he jumped off the top rope it makes sense knowing how good Shawn was in the ring
Same thing what people are saying about AEW, they're not used to being on television, nor should they be and the injuries are piling up fast. Goldberg shouldn't of been near a ring.

Chuck Austin never drilled his own head in to the canvas. And being inexperienced, he expressed his concern about having the move done on him without being able to use his arms to break his fall. And not only did the Rocker turn his body over even though Chuck told him he was paralyzed, his partner then jumped from the ropes to body slam him for the count. He was awarded 27 million dollars (which of course was contested) but the good news is Hart got it wrong by saying he has been in a wheel chair ever since. He was able to learn to walk again.
He has talked about it several times. More about the aftermath and Owen not reaching out to Steve afterwards. He attributed it to Owen’s guilt over the situation.
would have loved to see him work with Jake, Macho and DiBiase a bit more around 91-93 era. Shame Jake was gone before Summerslam 1992, as he claims they were scheduled to face there. He also claimed he was meant to face Warrior at Royal Rumble '93, and submit him to the sharpshooter (!). Not sure if that was legit or would have happened, but Bret vs Warrior would have been an interesting proposition, definitely 2 opposing styles. Bret vs Rude if Rude had returned at the end of '92 and Bret was champ would have been an excellent match too I reckon
Austin said in his book he felt Owen kicking out after 3 on the sloppy roll up could have hurt him more. So don't agree with Owen protecting his opponent
Well some people just weren't super safe, someone the size of Goldberg with his intense moveset had a much higher base risk of hurting someone than most, even smaller guys with safer movesets like Owen Hart caused critical injuries, you just won't hear Bret mention that particular case whenever he complains about unsafe workers.
@@nbs0078 Are you serious? Yokozuna botched a banzai drop, which was among the only moves he had that actually required some coordination on his part and nearly killed a man with it, Lesnar broke Hollies neck, proudly reinjured Angles neck, injured A-Trains neck, and caused several concussions (even one to himself) and hardway bleedings during his career. Vader was legit the most unsafe high profile wrestler in western wrestling history aside from maybe Abdullah The Butcher, he was notorious for legit hurting people, he severely injured various jobbers, he even caused broken ribs and a ruptured spleen to a big star like Sting, which is why most high caliber wrestlers refused to work with him. Goldberg meanwhile only injured Bret Hart once, and other than that he mainly injured himself, even Rey Mysterio caused more injuries than him over the years. I have no clue about Bam Bam, neither seen any of his matches nor know his movesets.
@@Triplebrc I'm aware that they're pretty unsafe aside from Bam Bam. I gave them as an example cause Goldberg makes them look super safe by comparison despite having the same if not more intensity than Goldberg.
If you watch the clip where that guy got injured in that Rockers match, one of them went to drop a splash on him after the Rocker Dropper and didn't even touch him. So Bret is just being bitter here.
The only reason owen didn't touch scsa is because steve told him not to. Not because he was a safe worker. If he was he would've listened to steve austin and not do the piledriver to begin with.
So the thing about austin was it's not that Owen did not touch him it was austin telling him don't touch me then he was told to work the crowd then austin said it's gonna be a roll up ... cause who knows what would have happened had austin not said anything..
I get it, He changed Bret's life for the worse and Bret ended up with all these health problems starting as a pretty young guy in his early 40s because of that kick. People get mad at Bret for talking about Goldberg but many guys from WCW have said that Goldberg was unsafe. I don't think Goldberg is a bad guy but it's not a real fight and he shouldn't have been allowed to keep hurting guys.
I always wondered why Bret wore 3 layers of tights. I always assumed he was paranoid about someone pulling down his pants by accident if he just wore shorts. But I disagree him about his look. It's not outdated. I think Bret got it right. It made him stand out and when you combine that black, pink and white color scheme it was the perfect ring gear for the hitman. His look would be the same today since everyone's ring gear is either tacky or makes them look like an unprofessional idiot.
It’s funny he talks about his brother temporarily paralyzing Steve Austin. He’s saying “he didn’t touch him” before the match Steve was sure that Owen was supposed to go to his knees not his butt and Owen said no I got down to my butt and Steve trusted him. Steve didn’t get hurt for something he did. Owen fucked him up cause he didn’t know what he was doing. He almost did it to another wrestler as well.

no one fears him he's been talking about the same 2 incidents for almost 30 years bro. we get it Montreal screw job and the dumb decision to wrestle bill Goldberg. He was putting on crappy half ass matches on WCW by then.
Jannetty was the one who flipped the injured wrestler over. Shawn came off the top rope with a body splash. Both should've been suspended without pay for doing that.
He was talking about what wrestlers are supposed to do when someone is hurt in the ring. Yes, owen was negligent by executing that piledriver but how he dealt with the situation afterwards was the correct way and that is what Bret is pointing out.

Can’t see why Goldberg gets all the blame when Bret continued to wrestle or why was allowed to (genuinely don’t know answer so would be happy to know why)
He wrestled some more, yes. Because concussions aren't like breaking a leg. The person who suffered a concussion literally had their brain fucked up and has no ability to determine whether they can continue or not. That's why professional sports now have to have concussion protocols to keep players safe and are almost always extremely cautious about letting someone who took a blow to the head to do anything until they can show they are truly okay with a lot of testing and doctor opinions. That all didn't exist when this happened to Bret. He had no idea how badly he was actually hurt and wrestling in those other matches likely made the injury even worse.
Oh I agree 100% how concussion protocols have progressed and Bret could not have known the severity of his injuries. I think upon reflection all these years later, I think that side of the story is often glossed over. I understand his narrative completely blaming Goldberg back when the incident happened however knowing what we do now, I’d like to hear Bret talk about that. If Bret came out and said look I carried on wrestling I diddnt know, wcw diddnt know, and presuming medically clear to compete imagine how many careers including my own could have been saved potentially. II think would probably be a fairer assessment now reflecting all these years later Like you say if this incident happened now, likelihood he wouldn’t be medically clear to compete until fully healed and his career may not have ended Fan of both these guys, but I think to blame it solely on Bill now knowing what we do seems harsh.

@@douglaspatrick868 I didn't remember his name but seeing it brought up made me think of the guy that got paralyzed.
Owen not only broke Austin's neck but also injured Dan Savern's neck almost breaking it! Bret very convincingly tries to forget that.
Really? Dan Severn?
I'll have to see that match. Owen wasn't into excellence of execution like Bret, he was just "cash your check and go home."
I’m a retired professional motocross racer. _[that being said]_ the motocross boot is the stiffest, hardest, most unforgiving piece of footwear available… at Wrestlemamia 12, Shawn Michaels kicked Brett twice in the face with AXO motocross boots on _(the same kinda Boots Ricky Carmichael was wearing as a Pro Circuit/SplitFire/Kawasaki racer back in 1997)_
I used to think it was funny when they later showed up wearing alpinestars
Why would he be using real MX boots instead of some sort of padded type.
I trust Bret more than any other wrestler. TRUE HERO.👍💓🤗✌️
Bret v Brock
Bret v Angle
Bret v Bryan
Bret v Punk
Bret v Kane
Bret v Cena
Bret v Batista
Bret v Mysterio
Imagine the endless matches we would have had if bret was injured. People wanna talk about bret getting over what bill did, imagine someone hurting you and you losing millions. Before people open their mouths, they should try putting themselves in other's shoes.
I wonder if bret vs mysterio at WCW . Idk
@@Tomas361TX unfortunately no
@@aspectra very true.
Who remembers bret hart always blasting rollins over being dangerous
Why is Bret not an agent or a trainer like his dad?
He’s a master at his craft and has so much to offer wrestling especially in this day and age
Who wouldn’t wanna be trained by The Hitman
CM Punk getting praise from Bret Hart is huge.
brett hart is far from my favourite wrestler, but he is by FAR the best PERSON in the wrestling industry
every other "good personb" you can find dirt on or evil things they did, bretts the only person who seems to never have done anything wrong to anyone
and its sad that THAT is the reason he didnt get all of the things he deserved
I have always liked Bret but can understand why some don't or actively dislike him. He's very particular and I'm sure that's frustrating for someone dealing with him. Not a bad thing but something that can inevitably cause friction between people
Ok ill bite the dirt on Daniel Bryan please and Brett, was a pothead and went after other women while married
@@Abb0able daniel bryan is a moral high horse scumbag. and i dont think theres any proof of brett going after other peoples wives
lesnar broke kurt angles neck twice and marty turned chuck austin over on not shawn lol
Kurt Angle's neck doesn't count. He broke it before WWE, and it's been prone to injuries ever since.
not only that when shawn michaels jumped from the top rope to perform his finishing move you can see how careful he was, absorbing all the impact and barely if at all touching him. I love bret but hes being irresposible here with what he is saying.
Brock is underrated performer hes physically a monster yet never botched and injured any of his opponents.
Didn't he give Undertaker a concussion in their WM match?
Albert & Hardcore Holly may have a different opinion.
he broke hardcore holly's neck !
@@mr-sam-jaxhe did that on purpose tho
Theres a universe where Bret hails Goldberg as a great worker
Protecting your opponents the true Holy Rule of pro wrestling.
Bret Hart v. Brock Lesnar would've been a match for the ages. Bret's technical and strategic skills going against the unstoppable monster in Brock Lesnar would've been epic. Wouldve felt like Wolverine v. Hulk
He forgot to list Owen Hart somehow
For somebody who says they've patch things up with Shawn michaels.... he sure doesn't miss a chance to bury him whenever he can
This may seem stupid, but it's interesting to hear Bret talk about his gear.
Well for starters I wouldn't be an idiot and keep wrestling and cause the end of my career then blame someone else for a mistake.
On Chuck Austin:
1.) it was Marty’s finishing move that injured him
2.) the guy took that bump so bad granted it’s very sad what happened but he did hurt himself
3.) as soon as Marty did that move on him he rolled him over within a second or 2 there was no time to have a conversation saying his neck was broken.
Marty should’ve just pinned him. That move was his finisher there was no reason to jump off the top rope on him. It also doesn’t even look like Shawn touched him at all when he jumped off the top rope it makes sense knowing how good Shawn was in the ring
I don’t blame Goldberg I blame the people who trained him and the people who let him perform in under a year.
I blame him ..
Same thing what people are saying about AEW, they're not used to being on television, nor should they be and the injuries are piling up fast. Goldberg shouldn't of been near a ring.
So do you blame the harts for what Owen did to Austin? Or is it not the same cause he died…
@@catchemcarlisle5655Goldberg had a history of injuring people, he hurt everyone he worked with. Owen unfortunately had the one bad accident with Austin, Owen was never labeled a dangerous worker.
that was a mix of things, Owen was doing a sit down, Austin positioned for a knee drop, but Owen should have also noticed that Austin was out of position and that Austin tucked his head for knee version tombstone instead of sit down, meanwhile Austin also should have paid attention to Owen calling for sit down version repeatedly...
@@Provos7777
Chuck Austin never drilled his own head in to the canvas. And being inexperienced, he expressed his concern about having the move done on him without being able to use his arms to break his fall. And not only did the Rocker turn his body over even though Chuck told him he was paralyzed, his partner then jumped from the ropes to body slam him for the count. He was awarded 27 million dollars (which of course was contested) but the good news is Hart got it wrong by saying he has been in a wheel chair ever since. He was able to learn to walk again.
This is the first time I've heard Bret mention Owen and Austin.
He has talked about it several times. More about the aftermath and Owen not reaching out to Steve afterwards. He attributed it to Owen’s guilt over the situation.
CM punk saying that Brett Hart is his idol makes a lot of sense. To extremely talented guys but two big ass crybabies
Two guys who couldn't draw a dime
😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
would have loved to see him work with Jake, Macho and DiBiase a bit more around 91-93 era.
Imagine Bret vs Kurt Angle Or Bret vs Eddie Guerrero🤩
Undertaker in the back with a single tear falling down as he slides back into his coffin.
Austin said in his book he felt Owen kicking out after 3 on the sloppy roll up could have hurt him more. So don't agree with Owen protecting his opponent
Once saw Bret Hart beat Mr. Perfect in Rosemont Horizon,IL
Shawn headbutt off top rope didn’t even tough the guy Bret needs to watch it back
Bret Hart just loves hearing himself talk. we get it.
Just like his favourite guy, CM Punk. They're like cousins.
@@gamesps9562 They are now married
at this point i just watch bret interviews to catch all the times he buries goldberg LMAO
Tell that to Bam Bam, Yokozuna & Lesnar. Heck even Vader was more safe than Goldberg.
@@Triplebrc Preach! Don't forget Mysterio killing a man during his 619 in Mexico.
The best of all time
If you watch the clip where that guy got injured in that Rockers match, one of them went to drop a splash on him after the Rocker Dropper and didn't even touch him. So Bret is just being bitter here.
The only reason owen didn't touch scsa is because steve told him not to. Not because he was a safe worker. If he was he would've listened to steve austin and not do the piledriver to begin with.
He bashes Goldberg for being a dangerous worker then praises his brother Owen even though he nearly crippled Steve Austin.
Very Bret Hart indeed
Bcz owen died . Bret lambasted owen for injuring austin
I'm pretty sure Bret was actually incredibly upset with his brother after the fact, especially since Owen never apologized to Austin
He points out the difference in that Owen stopped when he realized Austin was hurt. Shawn didn't with that Chuck guy.
you clearly didn't understand his point
Are you an idiot? Owen didn’t injure every guy he worked with. He had a terrible accident wrestling Austin. Owen was widely praised as a worker.
When I was a 7 year old I couldn't "get behind" a wrestler with pink ring gear. I love the 7 year old me
There's brutally honest and there's Bret Hart honest!
Owen almost paralyzed Austin and he praised him.. Rockers in the ring with a guy who couldn’t work and he blames Shawn Michaels.. “honest”….
this is 100,000,057 reason I love Bret Hart over other wrestlers.... HE WANTS COMMON SENSE SAFETY!
Owen Hart, God Rest his soul and I love Owen Hart, they do a roll up finish in that match
Owen was a victim of karma.
So the thing about austin was it's not that Owen did not touch him it was austin telling him don't touch me then he was told to work the crowd then austin said it's gonna be a roll up ... cause who knows what would have happened had austin not said anything..
Omg imagining prime Bret v prime Brock,… 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
It would look like Brock Lesnar vs Bo Dallas
Mabel was also known as reckless in the ring while Yokozuna was the complete opposite.
Do you agree with Bret Hart's view of Goldberg? Let us know in the comments below!
Yes! I want to see CM Punk and Bret Hart team up in some way.
Hitman is my all time favorit
I wish jimmy hart and jim neidhart wouldve stayed with bret and kept that faction alive
Bret vs Shane Mcmahon would of been a classic
Og said its beef forever with hbk 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I love bret hart I always debate to myself who is my favorite of all time and im leaning bret
I'm sure Bret would cry about taking belly-to-back suplexes from Lesnar if he'd ever had taken any from Lesnar.
I feel like the haters have some sort of unresolved grievance thats been held for years. I wonder if these haters feel anger, shame and fear because of Bret lol.
no one fears him he's been talking about the same 2 incidents for almost 30 years bro. we get it Montreal screw job and the dumb decision to wrestle bill Goldberg. He was putting on crappy half ass matches on WCW by then.
Bret and brock would have been awesome.
I immediately thought of John Cena, Rey Mysterio, Shawn Michaels and the Smoking Guns...
Then I almost forgot DDP who also wore pants/jeans.
KEVIN OWENS
Jannetty was the one who flipped the injured wrestler over. Shawn came off the top rope with a body splash. Both should've been suspended without pay for doing that.
If Steve was Bret's brother and not Owen, he wouldn't be so charitable to Owen. Bret is totally wrong here, which is sad because he is usually right.
never a fan but he seems like good guy
That's...not the positive anecdote about Owen that Bret thinks it. "He broke is neck...but he didnt injure him more." OK Bret.
He was talking about what wrestlers are supposed to do when someone is hurt in the ring. Yes, owen was negligent by executing that piledriver but how he dealt with the situation afterwards was the correct way and that is what Bret is pointing out.
@@teppler
He should of never did that pile driver that way… it wasn’t the first time Owen severely injured someone with that move and Steve specifically asked him not to do it before the match.
@@mazzvidzAnd everyone including Bret completely agrees with you, but that has absolutely nothing to do with the point Bret was making

Guess Bret didnt watch lesnar vs zach or vs spanky or the 2002 hellinacell vs taker , this doesnt look safe to me
Bret lost credibility in this …. Owen messed up go to your knees not your ass ! And Owen didn’t touch Steve because Steve told earl to tell Owen leave me alone … Bret is. A hater sticks up for Owen but talks crap bout Shawn but hbk comes off the top rope and either doesn’t touch chuck austin or hits him like a feather … Bret will always be second best when comparing to Shawn Michaels
Brett is a great worker, he is mad at Goldberg for ultimately making him retire. Accidents do happen.
Wish Bret didn’t bring up Owen hurting SC
Of course he has to find a way to take a shot at Shawn
Bret was a very safe worker and can’t blame him for shooting on Goldberg
Bret could describe making breakfast and break it down to the smallest detail and make it sound fascinating. I love to hear him tell stories. A real pro.
Bitttter Brett
Kurt angle doesn't make his list? Wow
WHO???
Brett Hart, Randy Savage, Mr. Perfect, Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat, Million Dollar Man or any other guys I left out that were experienced wrestlers with great athletic ability should NEVER have gone in the ring with an undisciplined, non athletic, bad attitude type wrestler like Goldberg.
Bret hart is always right
Perhaps the grease seller of all time.
Owen I juri g a guy badly is like Bret doing it…. Those two were so great in the ring… Wrestling Bret/Owen was an easy day on the job…. Goldberg you lost sleep the night before.
If Brock is safe then why did undertaker not remember anything past 3 o'clock when Brock beat the strike if he's a safe wrestler?
Because it not Brock fault taker didn’t land correctly or in good enough shape. Moron! It’s not ballet
Accidents do happen. You can be as safe as you want. But sometimes accidents happen.
No offense to Bret but the pants never hindered Jeff Hardy

Bret Hart- "Ya know goldberg was a real peice of shit."
Best there is, best there was, best there ever will be vs Best in the world. Instant classic
Brett-I can’t stand guys who are not safe. You should never get injured if you’re working with a real pro.

Of course the crowd doesn’t cheer at all for Brock Lesnar,.only the little guys like Daniel Brian and CM Punk.
If it's not broken don't fix it
Its A shame he never got to have a three way with New Jack and the Yeti. Bummer.
Bret really has to shut up and let it go. The amount of times he’s been crying about how Goldberg injured him badly. Ok we get that, but the way he keeps bringing it up over and over and taking jibes at him is getting really pathetic
It’s more of a bit now that he leans into.
He was asked a question and he will answer it. Goldberg will always fit in there as he was a terrible wrestler in the ring. A total amateur with no regard for anyones safety. Interviewers keep asking the same questions over and over not Brets fault.
No it’s awesome listening to him bash Goldberg. Goldberg was awful in the ring.
@@johnhamilton615 And drew twice the money and popularity over Bret.
Y didn't he say goldburg
Owen was arguably the least safe wrestler of his time
Brets one to talk about taking himself seriously. Bret had thousands of pictures of himself in gimmick in his home, a hitman pool table and that family photo where he forced his family into the hitman gimmick for a pic😂. Bret is so uncool and whiny. Grow up
Diddnt Bret keep wrestling after the Goldberg match. Surely if have concussion you don’t keep wrestling?
Not doubting if Bret got injured by Goldberg but If Usain Bolt broke his leg I’m sure he would do the 100m sprint tomorrow.
II think would probably be a fairer assessment now reflecting all these years later
Like you say if this incident happened now, likelihood he wouldn’t be medically clear to compete until fully healed and his career may not have ended
Fan of both these guys, but I think to blame it solely on Bill now knowing what we do seems harsh.
