Have to say that the comments sections on anything to do with hardware synth is so orderly and pleasant. Such a nice cross section of humanity is into synthesisers.
^^ loving the track by the way. I've been a guitarist for 20 years but sadly beginning to suffer really badly from RSI. I think I should be able to keep using the guitar for composing and possibly looped performances but I'm looking for a way to take the strain off my wrist and arm and continue to make music. Hard ware is appealing to me because the world of software is so unlimited. It's pretty overwhelming and confusing. I like the Idea of having nice possibilities within the machine but it being finite enough to actually get to know and learn. You say you use Ableton for thew drums and sequencing but I thought Ableton was just for PC? Here you are using a Mac? Anything you think a noob looking to get into live electronic should check out?
Quodge oh no Ableton is for OSX as well. I'd definitely recommend checking that one out especially if you're looking into live electronics. It's a rather intuitive sketch pad from the get go. NI Maschine might be another one if you're not too intimidated by the hardware/software combo. Sorry to hear abou the RSI. Hopefully you end up discovering somethin new and exciting with the sparked interest.
lol don't hate me.. I actually have a Machine MK2 packed away. It was amazing but wayy too much. Also I couldn't shake a feeling that it was cheating some how. I'm considering something simple to get me back into it like a Korg Ribbontribe. Then in the mean time I need to save up for monitors, audio interface, find a DAW I like and find a midi sync loop pedal with AUX and Jack inputs.. should get the ball rolling :)
Thanks for the RSI sympathy! :P Hopefully I can work towards curing it. If anyone reads this in the future and wants some information because they are suffering a similar thing just message! I youtube a lot! :P
Thanks Nick! The glitchy percussions are made with the good ol' "insert LFO everywhere and tweak all knobs at once"-method. ;) Metroid is definitely a good reference!
Thanks man, really glad to hear that! Hope you like the rest of the stuff as well. :) In case of further interest past the videos, Soundcloud and Spotify is filled with released music.
Emotionally torn between really enjoying this and lamenting over not stumbling across you sooner. Props to Huang for doing quality recommendations and not simple content reuse.
Great job. We just built the core of our university synth around an sv-1. I’ll be pointing our students in your direction. We are lucky to have the company in our city! Congratulations on your work, it sounds wonderful.
Thanks man! Really glad to hear if this has helped. I guess putting it into context of music instead of just a dry test helps. :) Awesome synth nevertheless!
I have a Mother-32, 6 months and still love it, but the only other synth I TRULY lust after right now is this one (the SV-1). I believe they would make an extraordinarily good pair together
VERY nice track... I just ordered a lifeforms and it should be here tomorrow :) can't wait. I've been wanting to build a modular synth for ages and the lifeforms seemed like a perfect gateway into that stuff. (it was gonna be either a mother 32, a no coast or an SV-1) eventually i opted for the sv-1 because it has so much more patching capabilities than the other 2 synths. (I plan on getting some nice modules to compliment the sv-1 in future but wanted something i can play with NOW :) next on my list is a noise engineering basimilus iteritas alter (if i can find anybody that has them in stock as they can't seem to make them fast enough ). I feel a lifeforms and BIA system alone will be capable of some CRAZY noises, throw in a makenoise maths and i'll be set :)
Oh, no secret at all but I have to listen carefully and try to remember.. :D As I recall it's just a saw wave with some very subtle noise messing it up a bit. Relatively fast envelope to make that filter bark and then just tweaking the cutoff and res to find the sweet spots. Then I've lifted the highs and lows with EQ to give the sound some extra bite.
Love this! I'd like to hear more about your workflow. I sometimes like to do single-synth songs, too, like the one in my 0-coast video; I usually end up making midi clips with the sound I like, freeze & flatten the track, then repatch and move on to the next one. It works well for repetitive kinds of music but less so for more complex compositions.
Thanks! That's pretty much the workflow I went with, although instead of making looping midi clips I ended up jamming/recording longer pieces just noodling on top of what I already had recorded and then finding the interesting parts and playing tetris with those. Drums on the other hand were made partially by patching single hits and using those as one shot samples or having a looped midi clip playing the same sequence for a drum and then tweaking longer progressions with the sound. But basically, as you, I was working with one sound at a time recording as much ideas I came up with it and then patching the next one in for recording.
Ah, OK. Thanks. You've probably got more experience with that approach, and maybe more patience than me :) This is really encouraging... I'm looking forward to doing more
Don't know about patience but with this one I found an inspiring sound to start with (the 1st bassline) which got me to a nice flow and everything else started falling in place around it as I was making it. Definitely doesn't happen every time, so as long as you just keep making stuff you'll eventually find something that clicks. The journey of searching is part of the fun! :)
btw, I found your video when looking for demos of the SV-1. I'm a Pittsburgh fan, and have a (modified) Foundation system, but after doing some things with my 0-Coast using this workflow, I started thinking about the SV-1. Yours is the best demo of it I've found. I'm still undecided, but I listen to your demo fairly regularly
I'd say the SV-1 is more of a "traditional" synth good for your bread and butter sounds as opposed to the 0-coast being capable of a bit of a different palette. Though I haven't really had a proper test drive with the 0-coast tbh, but I guess it comes down to what you're after.
simply the best demonstration of the capabilities of this little unit on the youtube at the moment! nice tune, good atmosphere and progression! can't wait to pick up my unit from the post office this saturday you've got a new subscriber on soundcloud man )
Great sound demo of what seems to be a fantastic module. Would you say this is close to the ideal module, to build one's first small modular around? Well done!
Thanks! It indeed is a really good starting point as it has all the basics covered in a decently priced package, as opposed to buying all that stuff separately.
Any tuning issues you've come across? I keep reading things like "had to return mine after messing with the tuning"..don't know what to think. this sounds incredible though. no doubt.
Just picked up a lifeforms to compliment my other full voice Mother 32. I'm still learning the ins and outs of it! Great video and thanks for sharing! Any videos/resources you recommend checking out to get familiar with it and see it's full capabilities (besides the manual of course :P)? Cheers!
Tokkiinsa. Se on CC lisenssilä aikanaan julkastu joten kunhan tekijäinfot on kohdillaan ja sisältö ei oo mitään ihan älyttömän arveluttavaa niin homma on ookoo. ;)
I pretty much hooked the Lifeforms via midi to Ableton, arranged patterns with Push, hit record and tweaked until I found gold. Then I cut/pasted and looped the good bits as the full arrangement plus added some mixing/fx. None of the sounds are played with a sampler. (Had a moment of doubt, that did I sample the bass drum but nope, that's a bit from a longer recording as well.) And thanks! Glad you like it. :)
Great tune. How many layers/channels does this song consist of? Since it's only one synth with two oscillators, i imagine you have gone through quite a few layers of recording before ending up with the result?
Let's see, can't remember but let's count. :) There's the repeating chord (1), the arpeggiated zips and zaps (one helluva long take 2), bassline (two different ones so 3+4), bassdrum (5), snare (two layers so 6+7), hats (8), the arp (9) and the pad (10). That's pretty much it I think so 10 different sounds counted! But for example the glitchy zaps are using the best bits taken from a long take containing lots of tweaking, but they do use only one track. And thanks, glad you like the tune. :)
Nathan C the synth sound is 100% Lifeforms yes, but it’s ran though a reverb to smear it into a pad. Basically it’s just a saw wave with pitch LFO to give it a bit of life.
Hey Recue, the sound design on this track is exceptional. It doesn't sound like a classic "all one sound source"modular piece. You have created something that could have been made using soft synths in the box. I have a question for you if you are still keeping an eye on this video. I have te SV1 and I love it, the envelope is so snappy and it sounds so clean. However, it has just the one envelope. How did you create the kick (without and additional EG for the zap)have you found any work arounds for the lack of 2nd envelope? Really amazing work dude. Do you have a sound cloud? ✌️
Hey David, it's been a while since this one so I might not remember all the details. I actually borrowed the unit for testing and made this video as kind of the test so I haven't used SV-1 much afterwards. If I recall correctly I just split the envelope for both pitch and amp, as simple as that. Then you'll have both, the pitch drop plus a snappy volume drop emphasizing the transient. And thanks man, glad you like the result. :) (Edit: wasn't the envelope on SV-1 already hardwired "under the hood" to the amp? I remember there was already some pre-made connections and the envelope could then additionally be hooked into inputs.)
Awesome! I'm trying to make sure I understand what you've done. By saying you multitracked this I assume you sampled loops of different sequences, and stacked those up, then live-patched and "played" on top of that in real-time? The synth only has two oscillators and one filter, so it seems to be the only way this could happen. Not starting an argument -- just making sure I understand how you did so much with so little, and make it look like it's all "live". (I' last played with electronic imstruments in the 90's with digital multitimbral/polyphonic synths and Alesis sequencer).
Ah, if you look closely the video is time-lapse so it's not "live". I just set up a camera to take a photo every 10 seconds of the session and the track is completely built during that session. It's pretty much the other way around that you stated. :) i.e. I patched and tweaked until I found something good, then recorded it in and moved on to patch the next thing that fits with it layering the whole thing bit by bit. In parts I recorded long takes and picked the good bits to keep. Just wanted to test what kind of a palette of sounds I can get out of that one lil' box. Quite a lot of running around with scissors. :)
Thanks for the explanation. I definitely noticed the time lapse look of the vid, but just marked it down to artistic choice. Wasn't smart enough to realize I was watching you do all your work to build up the final mix. I was definitely thinking, man this guy is a busy beaver working these last couple of layers live! So a pretty traditional multitrack recording, just done with one instrument. I saw that in your description, but still got confused. I"m getting old, I guess :-). Great job, and thanks for the response.
Hehe, no worries, I understand why it can look a bit misleading but indeed I'd need couple of extra hands, probably feet and synths to play that whole track live (drums and everything). ;-) Cheers!
Haha, yeah. I really just though you were doing certain parts live, but even that would keep you busy patching and re-patching. Anyway, great job -- really enjoyed it. I'm considering the purchase of a Pittsburgh setup like yours, but in the bigger case, for expansion (as if I really need to spend more $$). Have you done much with just what's in the case, as opposed to larger mixes?
Actually to be honest this was the first and last thing I did with it as it was a test drive and I don't have the box anymore. To me the Pittsburgh System 10 filter sounds more appealing as it's slightly more aggressive and edgy as opposed to the smoother one they use in Lifeforms. But of course it comes down to what you're after. Lifeforms on the other hand is this kind of all-in-one-patched-under-the-hood synth that has a good bang for the buck combo of little bit of everything. Good allaround box.
Can you please explain how to connect this synth with a DAW? I'm new to hardware, only produced on my PC before. I understand that I need two connections: #1. from my PC to MIDI IN to send midi signals #2. audio output from the synth back to the PC to record the sound Can I use separate USB devices for that? I.e. USB to MIDI interface for #1 and USB audio interface for #2, OR I need to have an audio interface with MIDI output build in? (they are more pricey, and I don't want to overspend just yet) Another thing that confuses me is the MIDI IN at SV-1... it's just a 3,5 jack, right? How is it MIDI than? If you'll have the time to explain this, I'll be very grateful for that!
1) Your DAW should let you use two separate devices for audio and MIDI. M-Audio makes some not-to-horribly-expensive interfaces that have both. 2) This uses the same type of 5-pin MIDI to 3.5 plug cable that they use on a Makenoise 0-coast I assume.
This is epic man!! Very nice work! I think Ill get this little machine, been thinking about getting some hardware like that for long. This one seems to be the coolest one. 0-coast is cool but very weird sounding, moog mother is a bit too clean. Do you know anything about the Deeper dark energy? But I think the Lifeforms is what ill be going for :)
Thanks man! Haven't played too much with the Dark Energy but I know people who swear by it and wouldn't sell theirs for anything. :) 0-coast definitely has it's own distinct sound as where Lifeforms is more of a classic subtractive synth with modulation. And Moog is on the smoother side as well. If you want more grit on the filter I'd recommend checking the Pittsburgh System 10 as that one can scream pretty nicely, the Lifeforms' filter is a bit tamer. :)
Thanks! Good purchase. :) The pad is two oscs (a saw and a pulse if I remember correctly) one octave apart fed through a wet reverb with quite a bit of modulation on the oscs to smear it up and make it thick.
asaf mazareb that’s a fairly simple sawtooth drone from the synth fed through a reverb and there’s and LFO modulating the VCO pitch that spreads the sound nicely. I’d say this is kind of THE sound in the track that needs the disclaimer in the beginning because reverb plays a role in that one.
Excellent sounds, I wish I could afford hardware like this! Software synthesis just doesn't have this kind of depth, warmth, and organic sound. I'd love to hear some psy and trance arps/bass run through that box.
Loads of good softsyths (even free) out there! Luckily these days it's not about your wallet. It's easy to get stuck in the endless "I just need to buy this and that in order to sound like this and that"-loop. Make use of what you have and learn it inside out. :)
I'm a Reason user myself, and don't get me wrong, I couldn't live without Thor and Subtractor. There hasn't been a sound I heard that I can't recreate with either. It's the closest thing I'll ever have to a full-fledged synth rack. It's just been my observation that real analog synthesis just sounds better, plain and simple. I also feel like physical synths give me a more creative workflow when designing sound. I'm starting my analog collection with a Gakken SX-150 MK II, which I will (hopefully successfully) hack to add MIDI control capabilities and get some nice sequenced sounds out of. I'll probably move onto some of the budget Korg desktop synths (Volca or Monologue) and beef up my collection from there. If you have any other budget suggestions, I'm all ears :)
Yeah, analog gear excels at certain things, filters tend to have certain appealing characteristics and especially when you overdrive analog gear you get all sorts of nice grunt and growl. From the budget analogs I'd look for Microbrute (or Mini) as the brute factor adds just that nice scream to it. :) The Minilogue sounds pretty smooth. Volca Keys seems quite fun and quirky but I haven't actually played with one. Korg in general seems to have their game plan well in place for the budget gear. I actually had a brief period way back with Reason as well. It's a very tight allaround backage of tools. Loved the ease of use but I remember thinking as well that the sound engine didn't quite get me there, but I also know awesome sounding albums made only with older Reason versions so it might have been me as well. :) Also there's quite a bit more to the sound than just analog vs digital or soft vs hardware. What I tend to do myself is try to dissect the sound in terms of what makes it appealing, is it dynamics or EQ or whatever and can I replicate it with what I currently have.
That's really the best way of looking at it. I can get some amazing sounds out of reason, and it will always be my go-to. I think I'm just aching to get my hands on some real knobs and see what I can get out of it :)
Thanks! Yeah, well spotted that I didn't use the KB-1 at all for that. That unit had a bit of a defective keyboard where the lowest and the highest keys didn't have too good contact so I got frustrated and used push/MIDI instead. It's basically a controller yes, but it has an arpeggiator and you can use it for step sequencing parameters so there's more to it than just a keyboard.. provided it works. ;)
Neat, I have the sv-1 black box and was thinking of getting the kb and the rack shell. I still might do that. Thanks again for letting me know what to look out for, in case it is defective, i can return it.
Yeah, there's always warranty. :) There's also a way to adjust the sensitivity of the keyboard, apparently they are quite sensitive to temperature and humidity changes on how well they operate. Or so I've been told.
Yeah, I used mainly Push. I started with the internal sequencer but the keyboard had some contact issues so I hooked Push in and worked like a charm through MIDI. :)
Ah nice thanks! Thinking about a new setup, maybe I should invest in a push to sequence my synth. Really like this distant Burial type pad combined with some glitched up drum madness:)

That pad sound ☁️
Surly the pad sound under the aprg sound isnt from the lifeform 201? nice stuff
Nathan C the synth sound is 100% Lifeforms yes, but it’s ran though a reverb to smear it into a pad. Basically it’s just a saw wave with pitch LFO to give it a bit of life.
BADASS!
(Edit: wasn't the envelope on SV-1 already hardwired "under the hood" to the amp?

I understand that I need two connections:
#1. from my PC to MIDI IN to send midi signals
#2. audio output from the synth back to the PC to record the sound
Can I use separate USB devices for that? I.e. USB to MIDI interface for #1 and USB audio interface for #2, OR I need to have an audio interface with MIDI output build in? (they are more pricey, and I don't want to overspend just yet)
Another thing that confuses me is the MIDI IN at SV-1... it's just a 3,5 jack, right? How is it MIDI than?
If you'll have the time to explain this, I'll be very grateful for that!
1) Your DAW should let you use two separate devices for audio and MIDI. M-Audio makes some not-to-horribly-expensive interfaces that have both.
2) This uses the same type of 5-pin MIDI to 3.5 plug cable that they use on a Makenoise 0-coast I assume.
yeah, I've got this figured out already, but thank you for your time anyway! :)
I just got an SV-1 as well, the thing sounds like a beast, I love it. I had to order a MIDI cable from Pittsburgh though.
Insta subscribe. Lovely stuff mate. 👌
Cool man, thanks for the reply :)
3:55 So good. Made my evening :)))))
nice tune! i just ordered the system and look forward to using it.
Question --> how on earth did you make that pad?
Thanks! Good purchase. :) The pad is two oscs (a saw and a pulse if I remember correctly) one octave apart fed through a wet reverb with quite a bit of modulation on the oscs to smear it up and make it thick.
Adding delay helps with pads to blend them!
how does one make those amazing ambient space chords playing in the back of the track??
asaf mazareb that’s a fairly simple sawtooth drone from the synth fed through a reverb and there’s and LFO modulating the VCO pitch that spreads the sound nicely. I’d say this is kind of THE sound in the track that needs the disclaimer in the beginning because reverb plays a role in that one.
@@Recue will for sure try this out
jesus christ dude. this is massive.
Snug Nug Pillows Thanks man!
Holy sh*t that's goooood
Great
Excellent sounds, I wish I could afford hardware like this!
Yeah, those lil boxes can provide great deal of inspiration. :) Best of luck!
❤❤❤
that reese at 3:15 is insane
Dope!
Great track! But you never even used the KB-1? is it more than just a controller?
is it even useful?
Lagavulin ftw.
Fire
epic
DOPE!!!!!
how crazy good is this?
Haha, thanks!
like it a lot! have you used the Push to sequence it?
Yeah, I used mainly Push. I started with the internal sequencer but the keyboard had some contact issues so I hooked Push in and worked like a charm through MIDI. :)
Ah nice thanks! Thinking about a new setup, maybe I should invest in a push to sequence my synth. Really like this distant Burial type pad combined with some glitched up drum madness:)
Barskiniov yeah, Push feels more like and instrument at times instead of just a controller so definitely worth the investment I'd say. 😊👍
Can we use your tracks in videos?
Techforseed - Rabani Baloch depends on the track and video. Hit me up with the contact info on www.recue.net and I'm happy to discuss more.
Also is that Port? :)
Quodge hehe, it's whiskey. 😊 cheers mate!
whow great
What is that whiskey you are drinking?
Looks like a Lagavulin 16 Year Single Malt Scotch. Good Whisky if you are into licking an ashtray. ;)
@@chairman72 Your discription of said whiskey is highly inaccurate, if you were to say it like inhaling a breath of oxygen rich seabreeze literally you would have been closer to it's accurate character. An ashtray really??? That's what you thought of when tasting that amazing whiskey??? wauw I guess...?!
Lalaland, truth be told I’m a Bourbon drinker. I know lots of people that enjoy a fine single malt. It’s just not my brown liquor of choice. Which is good because that means there is more for you.
YES!! Great sound. But it also made with / by Ableton Live & Push..... Anyway awesome work. ;-)
That and also teeny tiny bit of Lagavulin. ;-) Thanks!
