- 17-year-old David Popovici has shocked the world yet again! He has smashed his own 100m Freestyle PB and set a new WORLD RECORD in the final of the European Championships 2022, lowering his previous record of 46.98 down to 46.86, the fastest time in history. Previous World Record was set at the Rome 2009 World Championships by Cesar Cielo, 46.91.
UPDATE: On 11th February 2024, China’s Pan Zhanle has lowered Popovici’s mark down to 46.80s (22.26/24.54).

It’s extremely impressive considering his super low muscle mass. Most sprinters are huge, so they pull a lot of water and create more resistance with their body. On the other hand, Popovici seems like he’s gliding through the water with barely any resistance with his incredible technique, which makes him more hydrodynamic. He showed us how much versatility there is in this sport and that you don’t have to fit necessarily into one body type in order to perform on a world stage. Revolutionary!

But this is the difference between him and others, he uses more techniques than the power of muscles, which he doesn't have so much.
But imagine what he could do having strong muscles too...I think if he will improve his start, will be the best in history
at 17 he will probably bulk up in the years to come . Invariably he is a man to watch. Can't wait for what is to come from him, and his competition let's not forget.

46.86 with a non sprinter freestyle stroke is out of This world.
Considering he is only 17!!!!! And took down all the junior records with this unbelievable performance, he also took down a record held by someone at his prime and wearing a super suit!! Unreal!

I believe he is capable of becoming the first man in history to go under 46 seconds within the next few years. It was once an unthinkable time, but I believe he's capable of it given his young age, talent, and the fact that his 1st lap and dive provide decent scope for improvement.
His youth and speed alone (at that young age to do that well) will definitely have him seeing a lot of Olympic action for years to come - that's for sure. Competing in the 100 freestyle (and if he can compete in other styles but I'm sure his specialty is freestyle) he will definitely be competition for the USA and other countries competing in the Olympics.
@@nicholasinbusiness I think he'll dominate sprint freestyle events at the next 2 Olympics. Branching out into other strokes may be foolish for him as he'd need to mix up his training to accommodate for it and that could adversely impact his pet events. I think he should focus squarely on freestyle and putting such a large buffer between him and the competition that he will be an old man by the time someone breaks his records.
@@andrewj1528 I agree just like Phelps and some of the other who specialized in butterfly it would be good just for him to stick with freestyle. He will be very very competitive with that stroke alone--it's going to be interesting to see how it will go in 2024. Looking forward to seeing him compete but ofc I would want a US person to win though since I'm American...hahahahaha. At the same time though I want to cheer the guy on to win too but I'll prob just come to my senses and just hope for an American to win..hahahaha.

That's what I said... People are talking a lot about how skinny he is. But if you look the swimmers. If your bodyshape is good, there is no need to add mass. It will just make it harder to move through water. (Only if he adds mass to the correct places. It will help. Lats, trisep and that's about it 😅)

His physique will change over time, this can bring him benefit or disadvantage ... bearing in mind that he is already 1.90 cm. Paradoxically, he is an athlete from a country with only one Olympic pool and yet he has lifted the baton. As he said, the muscles and the body adapt if you control your brain well.. .my opinion is this nice amazing weird kid will become the best swimmer in human history. God gave him a gift and he took full advantage. Well done kid, you make your romanians proud of you and proud of theyr country!

What I think is genuinely mental about this kid beyond his just unbelievably incredible speed through the water is that he's got a below-average start and a really weak turn! he's got .2 just in the start and .15-.2 in the turn on the 100... that could have been a 46.4 without any gain in muscle or endurance. you add 2 years of growing in to his body and improving on turns and there is no reason why we couldn't see him go 45.something ...
