    I have watched this film so many times. I saw it when it was released at the cinema and had to hold back tears. Before the release of the film their was a bit of criticism in the reviews not just on Redford's age but that Dennis was much younger in reality and that he had an English accent. Initially Sydney tried Redford performing with an English accent but it didn't work. In the end, regardless of any criticism, this was a brilliant film that I still cherish and remember to this day. In fact, years after I saw it I was in Africa and when I was in Nairobi I went to the town called 'Karen' and the house is still there where Karen Blixen lived.

    That's Steven Spielberg for you. Even though this was in the MOVIE MAKING business, it happened to me in real life. I had shot a charging wild boar, as a teenager in India, with my .470 NE in an unbelievable situation. It was wounded and resting under some bushes. I had asked that villager to go and throw a few rocks to flush it out. It came out charging with scary grunts and bristles on its neck line were raised. I shot it at all most point blank range. The 500 grain S N hit it in between the eyes...its head going down between its front feet and it was pushed back twice the length of its body. Once I recovered from the dizzy spin of the recoil I felt something oozing out from my nose. I wiped it and saw....blood from the
    recoil of the Elephant gun !
    How did it ever occur to Steven Spielberg to make that a part of the scene after the shooting 🤔.

      I think you have to look at it in terms of the times. Karen Blixen lived in Kenya from 1914 to 1931, do you know how unusual it was for a woman at time, to up root and travel, live in Africa, was married, but had an affair with Deny FInch Hatton, and also go hunting. Your comment is very ignorant, you cannot expect someone at time to have the same values and sensibilities as we have today.

Karen lived in Kenya from 1913 to 1931. Meryl Streep portray her quite adequately. The feeling about hunting and shooting big game was a lot different then, than it is now. The double rifle may well have been a H H , but the cal. for the time period would make it most likely a 500/450 3.25 ". And the other rifle is not a Lee Speed which is a fancied up lee enfield. It is a origanial mauser pattern sporter, and cal. is anyones guess. The 8x7mm J with it's .318 " dia. bullet was popular at that time, and so was the 9x57mm cartridge in africa as was the 7x57mm aka .275.

    • @michaelsnavely2951
      @michaelsnavely2951 6 лет назад +2

      It just came to me, her rifle could have been a .318 Westley Richards that came out in 1910 and was very popular chambering for British made sporters based on the mauser action. Plus the cartridges on her belt are long enough to be 318 cal. which is about the same size as the 3006 round. In fact 3006 brass can be formed to work in the .318 W R rifle.

      In reality, Von Blixen was a tremendously successful safari leader. One suspects that this MOVIE scene was shot this way in order to demonstrate that Von Blixen could adapt and perform well under pressure, and that Dinesen, his new wife, was also capable of coolly handling a lion charge. Remember that this is a MOVIE, not real life. One of the last things Karen Dinesen said was that she wished she could have gone on safari with Von Blixen one more time.

      They have a First Amendment right of freedom of speech, just like you do....the one you used to criticize them. Would you still make the same comment if you agreed with their opinions?

      Brenda Payne I did not question whether or not they have a first amendment right to speak their minds. I questioned the wisdom and substance of what they say. Hollywood actors have purposefully alienated half the nation with their silly political antics. These are people who play make believe and dress up for a living. They are not deep thinkers. They can say what they want, but they can also reap the derision of their former fans. People like me, who now refuse to put one dollar from my wallet into theirs

      Just because you disagree with them does not mean they don't have something intelligent to say. I think both Robert Redford and Meryl Streep are very intelligent. I never let politics interfere with my enjoyment of actors or singers. James Wood and Jon Voigt are conservative, I'm not, but I still love their movies, they are good actors.@@pamtnman1515
