@@trashtvinternational That may very well be so, but the panomaric shot are simply breathtaking. We have become accustomed to seeing satellite photos, geographical documentaries and such. But in 1913 planes had only been invented 10 years earlier. Just imagine how it must have felt seeing the world from above for the very first time in your entire life. The movie certainly captures this to perfection.
I absolutely love this film. I cried absolute buckets watching it towards the end! And I defy anyone to watch this particular scene and not get goosebumps! Pure magic!
@maggiestevenson5010...and I did the same. Buckets! For a solid 30 or 40 minutes I could not stop as I exited the theater that evening...What a movie and music score. Sublime!
Well, this one has me in tears. Back in 1973, Michelle - the love of my life - and I did this FOR REAL. But we flew across North America {& back} in our 1929 Gipsy Moth.. We've been in love from the day we met and have now been together for 56+ years. We both still fly, and Michelle has flown her own 1929-style, open-cockpit "Pietenpol Aircamper" for 45 of those years. And while we also did the "hand-holding" in the Gipsy Moth, we've come to learn that the greatest expression of our love happens when BOTH of us are flying our OWN airplanes in close formation. There is something about seeing the person you love flying free and in control of their own destiny across these gorgeous aerial vistas that is unlike anything else we've ever experienced. And despite being a few feet apart, we never feel closer... 💞
How grand the love of flying, each independent yet connected. I've flown numerous times in small planes, but never actually piloted any. The freedom is amazing. Did teach my wife to ride a motorcycle. I bought one and said this is yours. She was 40 at the time. She taught my sister. We rode everywhere. Though not a plane, the freedom and independence is similar. What a grand jester of life you too have. Be always in the air. Also, a great movie. Read all her books and short stories.
Her reaching her hand back to him as they're soaring above the clouds... isn't that just the perfect metaphor for true love? When we finally feel completely alive?
In the book Karen wrote that flying in the front seat of the plane felt like being carried on the hand of the pilot, maybe that’s why she took his hand.
Wife and I went to Masai Mara in 1986, on an el-cheapo safari. We slept in an army pup tent for two. We went to Lake Nakuru, which I think is the place the plane flew over. Flamingos and pelicans everywhere. Beautiful.
@@AOMVideoProductions It was very informal. We had a couple of guys, all locals, who drove us around in vans and served as our guides. We set up tents ourselves, and our group of about 12 people had a great time together. Our meals were prepared right in front of us at our camps. That pup tent I mentioned protected us very well when a 12-hour storm hit! (I was an experienced trekker, but my wife was not. She loved the experience.). You should go for it---seeing literally hundreds of animals spread out in front of you is an unforgettable experience.
From Kenya.(keenya!)..thanks for showing the beautiful rift valley scenery....naivasha,lake nakuru, the escarpment, mount longonot volcano and the wildlife!
Such an absolutely spellbinding scene, but like so many movies before and after it, taken to an even greater level by the maginficence of John Barry's soundtrack.
Meryl Streep has a house in Aspen where she spends a few months of the year. According to the locals she only answers to the name of Mrs Green . My friend who is Australian and stays at a ski lodge not far away from Meryls home. One morning as he walked past he saw her on the balcony drinking a coffee , he said loudly " good morning Mrs Green " & she looked at him and smiled and replied " good morning kind Sir "..
Gorgeous ! And as I watch this scene over and over again, I am amazed at how mediocre my day-to-day concerns are. I (and I believe that everyone) should be concerned about loving more and experiencing experiences that leave us breathless. I'm not talking about dating Meryl Streep/Robert Redford or flying a plane over the Kenyan plains - that reality won't be for many people. But it is possible to live a true love, beyond physical appearances and live incredible adventures, even if we don't know how to fly a plane.
He was brilliant... Dances with Wolves was mesmerizing, as was Out of Africa which I think he won the Academy Award Best original music score for both pictures.
Of course watching it on RUclips doesn't do the scene any service but on the big screen in 1984(?) even men were choked up by one of the greatest love stories on film..
Film was shot on Crescent Island in Naivasha, Kenya...the island did not have any animals...so the production brought em on the island...they were not taken off post production...having proliferated over the years, the island is now a tourist attraction with so many Giraffes, Zebras, Gazelles, and others...beautiful place!
I thought the soundtrack, evocative, wistful and oh so beautiful, strongly reminded me of one of my of all time favourites, "Dances with Wolves". I was right, John Barry made them both. What a composer.
Scenes captured , flying about landscapes wonderfuls of Kenia !!! Magic moment's Cinenatoghrafics genius , brillant's actors Robert Redford and Meryl Streep!!! Soundtrack , magnific " John Barry "
Actor Patrick Swayze, an avid pilot, used to play this inside his small plane's cockpit with his wife at his side, both of them listening to it as they flew over the American west.
We will never see movies like this again, Dances With Wolves, Schindlers List, The Godfather, Saving Private Ryan, Shawshank Redemption. The new crowd just doesn’t have it in them and the great movie industry is gone.
There are many good films. But few, very few of them become legends. And when this happens, it's because the director was able to give golden wings to a wonderful dream...
Coming from a Italian your observation adds that much more relevance. (makes me think of the scene in "Amadeus" when 'Saleiari' meets Mozart presented in the King's court)
Seemingly no one else has bothered to knowledge him recently and sadly it's not in the description either. John Barry, who composed 11 James Bond scores, among many other things, made the music for this great film. I read the whole description, pretty sure. Not a word, aside from "original score". That would be a good place in which to insert, I duno, his name.?!?!?..That's really messed up. It would not have won 7 academy awards without his music...
Look closely and you will notice Redford hands Streep a pair of goggles twice at the beginning - once before she gets in the plane and again when she is in the cockpit. There's also a shot of them in the cockpit maybe 20-40 metres above the ground, which is followed by the a shot where the plane has barely lifted off the ground.
poor editing for sure, and somehow this movie won best film editing despite the sloppy editing in that scene and a few others throughout the film. Kind of like how Terminator 2 Judgement Day won Best Sound Design despite screwing up multiple types of sound effects (most egregiously "telephone ring tone" sounds.
I BOUGHT SOME HANDKERCHIEFS FROM A BOY IN THE STREET IN MOMBASA. I WALKED TO THE TRAIN STATION AT NIGHT. IT WAS VERY FRIGHTENING. I CALMED MYSELF BY SINGING - SIMPLY THE BEST - IT WAS ALL THAT I COULD DO TO CONSOLE MYSELF AGAINST THE DARKNESS ALL AROUND.
No birds were harmed in the making of this scene but were only disturbed and terrified with the risk of them flying into the plane. But sure, it's great stuff anyway.
I keep coming back to this movie almost religiously
One of cinema’s most beautiful and grandiose scenes
Most beautiful geographic scenery of Africa ever recorded in filmmaking history. A true masterpiece of cinema.
