    Phil Collins is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, drummers of all time. Absolutely sublime, and is a master of many different genres. From progressive rock to jazz fusion to pop to big band to whatever else you can name. One of the masters! Legendary chops.

    This song on the Live at Perkins Palace video 82, is prob the best 5 mins you’ll see of Collins on the drums, at least in terms of appreciating how good he was. Back then was he was still a top drummer, he had his chops, and it was before he got dragged into the limelight with Live Aid, Films, Miami Vice and all the other distractions. All other video of him on the drums - with the odd exception of Fly on a Windshield 75/76 (Genesis) and some of the restored Genesis Lyceum Show (esp Los Endos) - either miss the really good stuff, have the wrong camera angle, or the camera doesn’t stay on what he is doing behind the kit, long enough to fully appreciate his skills. So this song at Perkins is pretty awesome - not only was he lightening fast, he was incredibly musical and grooved in a way that surpasses the likes of Peart and so on..

    I remember a good friend of mine saying Phil Collins was just a basic drummer!! I showed him this plus dozens of other videos of the man & he soon changed his tune..... The greatest drummer ever, Simply the best.

      I'd say he Is way underated by a lot of people because most people don't know about Brand-X. Hell most people don't even know he was a drummer. He Is a hell of player but far from the best ever. I mean what about Max Roach, Gene Krupa, Bill Bruford, Billy Cobham the list goes on.

    Phil Collins at his drumming best - I was so young during this period (15 ?) and as a drummer myself at the time, I idolised Phil. His playing is so efficient and beautiful, very relaxed posture and playing, I don't know of any current drummer who plays any where near as fluidly as this.
    The clip, which I'm eternally grateful for, really took me on a trip (and I don't smoke anything) - I could have died during the watching of it and would have died a happy man. What an era to have grown up during. I feel incredibly blessed to have been a part of it all.

I am a tad older then you as i was 17 when Product came out & saw Brand X live at Hammy that same year, they were supporting Bruford would you believe so that went down as one of my all time best gigs ever! completely stunning! I still listen to Brand X ( & Bill) even now for many trips down memory lane back to the 70's, the best decade for real music & proper musicians by a long way!

      This is simply Phil Collins at his very best. Sure, on most of the songs he’s held back (even in Genesis), but in Brand X, he made everyone who thought he was a bad drummer look like they belong in an institution. Absolutely superb in Brand X, Genesis (with and without Peter), his solo work, and even other projects.

    Collins has a mind for business. While some of his simpler drumming and songwriting is heard on his later genesis and solo works, he shows here just how talented he is. Made his millions off of the "sell out" stuff while still holding true to his talents.

    Brand X with Phil Collins. He was a fantastic percussionist back in the 1970's and 80's. Hopefully he has recovered from his back problems and alcohol now..

      He's back on the road but only singing, he has serious nerve problems and a "lose foot". I don't think he'll truly give up drumming, maybe when he gets better he'll try it but I seriously doubt he'll ever be able to drum like this again.

      @@FHDTV I know this is an old reply, but I figured I'd give it a shot. How big was Genesis at this point (pre-Duke)? I know that had "Follow You Follow Me" in '78, but they were not yet hugely popular. Yet it seems like the host indicated they were relatively well know, at least, at the time.

    • @FHDTV
      @FHDTV 4 года назад +1

      @@frankswarbrick7562 I'd say they were nowhere as popular as they were in the 80s, especially with Phil Collins' success, but at that point they had released 'follow you follow me' in 1978 which did really well all over the world. They were more popular in Europe at the time than they were in the US as well. Albums post 1980 especially like Genesis, Invisible Touch, and maybe even Duke and Abacab really made them popular in the US and around the world as well

    the guitar melody sounds like "every step of the way" (santana) & they did a number around the same time where the keyboard line sounded like "black market" (weather report). maybe they "wore their influences lightly", if that makes any sense

    Saw the original on OGWT and saw that it was advertised as one of the best of clips in the Hogmanay edition, so stayed up until around 2 before heading out to a party and got to the end and it was announced that there had been a problem with the tape and it wasn’t going to be played. Replaced with the live film of LS Freebird, - you know the one with the bass player and his short lead anyhoo the epitome of gutted. I think that’s why we’ve never seen a decent version. Some numpty fucked up the tape. Just wonderful to see Phil just playing so easily.

    It's a shame about the poor quality of the recording, but I can remember when this was first aired. I reckon the reason for the 20th Century Fox fanfare beginning is Phil's sick humour influenced by Thin Lizzy's "Johnny the Fox" album on which he appears where it says in the credits, "Special thanks for Fox sake..."

    Carl Palmer was a pioneer as Collins in seventies' rockage but sorry Carl didnt'have the terrific sense of groove and dynamics that Phil has always had(David Garibaldi,superfuky drummer of Tower of Power, talked about Phil in this way, making examples of great drummers with very good solid groove)and the others that you mentioned wouldn't exist without people like Phil Collins,John Bohnam,Stewart Copeland,Steve Gadd,Billy Chobam.......hear Phil with Brand X better....it's futuristic style
