While Jaco Pastorius is rightly celebrated as master of the electric fretless bass, it's criminal that Percy Jones is rarely quoted in the same way. Cuz he should be.
He was a monster in the 70's. I saw him recently and although he plays extremely well, he would be a bit soft these days for Brand X. Mike does mostly softer club music.
@@loucontino4804 I mean, he's always been a jazz drummer (post-bop drummer), even if he is really popular for his funky drumming with Herbie Hancock. I'm going to be very honest, I'm a jazz guy, and I'm a huge Mike Clark fan, so my comment is very subjective haha. But all that to say that, since he had never played jazz fusion (jazz rock) in his life before Brand X (never after that either), it is clear that he does a amazing job, because in fact he's not a fusion dude at all. He adapted his drums playing to this music, but contrary to what you seem to say, I don't think he lost anything, very little at least. He also said in an interview that he accepted Percy Jones' invitation because he wanted to try out this style that he had never played before, so he wanted to live a new experience and try something new. And of course in acoustic jazz, it's softer, it's not fusion ;) Sorry if my english is bad
@@alexandremainville5139 I agree with you about Mike Clark being a jazz drummer and one of the masters at linear funk drumming. He was out of his element on this gig, but just KILLS IT. He has been playing jazz his whole life since and probably would not feel too comfortable playing this now in his early 70s. I do know that sadly Mr. Collins can’t even sit behind a kit at the same age. Your English is fine and I am a Mike Clark fan as well.
I went to the Bottom Line a few nights earlier to see Earl Hines and saw Brand X billed; I was flying back to London on same day! Couldn't change those air tickets back then... thankfully I had seen them perform a couple of times in London... what an opportunity lost.
This is the sound that made me want to be a drummer. Chops for days but musical and so compositionally aware and head of cats of the time . He frames beautifully.
You are 1000% correct! Percy Jones is the Grand Master of the fretless bass in my book!NOBODY, but NOBODY can make the fretless bass GRRRRR-owl like an angry grizzly bear the way Percy can!!! There is no denying that Jaco was great, but why Percy is not usually thought of instantly, as well as Jaco, as one of the top all-time great innovative fretless bass players in a mystery to me!
Wackerman talked about" framing" in fusion a more improvisational compositional approach in a clinic I attended .Pert lends a polyrythmic feel to the band. Busy percussionist indeed

I saw this tour about a week or so later at the Roxy in L.A. They were absolutely tight as hell and going nuclear on these tunes. Mike Miller did an amazing job on guitar, he didn't try to copy Goodsall's style or sound, but really made those parts his own. The story I heard was Mike learned the tunes in a couple days off a tape the band sent to him, after John was in the process of recovering from tendonitis. They actually had to do a gig or two with no guitar until Mike could fly out to join them.
When did Mike Clarke take over from Chuck Burghi, who was the drummer on Masques, I thought Chuck did the tour and then left BX? To my mind Masques is Brand X’s most coherent album, a real tour de force.
Burgi toured with the group until mid October. Clark had only been playing with Brand X for about a week at this point. This is the answer that the guy who published the video give to someone else asking a similar question.
@@fusionfan6883 I can assure you it's Mike Clark and he's actually the reason why I'm here and i'm actually not that much of a fusion guy myself. During his drum solo on Deathly Nightshade, I can recognize some of his licks, it's really him.
From what I've heard, Mike Miller learned the parts in just a few days. I do know Brand X played a number of shows without a guitarist during the '78 tour, after Goodsall was unable to play. Makes me believe Miller had very little time to get up to speed.
Pretty sure it was not Clark on drums but Burgi as I have his autograph on Masques acquired the day of this show. I was there too and also do not remember Clark at all.
Awesome is a profound understatement. Very little music of this caliber today... too many empty headed drelges being satiated by worthless BS that passes for music...

I was thinking the same thing!! ✌❤🙏
Indded. Percy Jones and Mick Karn are the two unsung geniuses of the electric fretless bass.
Yes, I completely agree...
Percy Jones also plays in Brian Eno's Another green world and Before and after the science... as far as I can remember...
@@hunterthompson2206 And Pino Paladino too, he's one hell of a bassist, with Gary Numan
I'm in awe of Jones' performance, one of the greatest bassists that ever lived as far as I can tell.
Much agreed. Overshadowed by all the p.r. Jaco received. But IMHO, Percy was -- and still IS -- FAR more innovative and iconoclastic.
Percy is my favorite. I try to play like him... it's hard!
agree
Saw him live not long ago and he hasn't lost a thing.

This live performance is incredible. Especially the rhythm section and in particular Mike Clark on drums. Holy molly.

Back in the day I found that people who loved Brand X also loved Colosseum 2’s last two albums,I know I did🎸🤘🏻
Jaco and Percy both came to the attention of the public in 1976.
Cool or what!
I was at this show. It was incredible.
I saw this tour near Chicago.
Me too!
I love Masques! So cool to hear The Poke & Black Moon live!
Totally agreed
" Black Moon " such beautiful instrumental , Morris Pert scored a 10+ by composing it ...
Mike Clark doing an admirable job covering the skins for Phil.
Actually he's covering for Chuck Burgi who recorded the album but I guess couldn't make the tour or left early perhaps. I'm not sure of the details
