    When will these people realize that Warhammer 40k is supposed to be a parody/critique of fascism instead of acting like the Imperium are the good guys? The whole point of Warhammer is that EVERYONE is a villain. It’s a grim dark universe where there is only war and no peace, yet there are some in the fandom that act like this setting is their ideal vision for the world or something.

    The reason why SM are a boys club, and this is meta AND cannon, is due to the imperium being an allegory for all of the worst totalitarians of IRL human history. Feudal lords, the Inquisition, no no Germans, it's all there, and intentionally so, the Genesis of 40k is a satire of Thatcher era England, if you look at the early art this is hilariously obvious, all of the men are hyper masculine, all of the women are like, uh, "Iron ladies". So it goes that a ultra space fash regime would make an all boys club of (technically asexual) of über soldat, I mean, super soldiers, it's because they're space fascists. That's what fascists do, they make a death cult of hyper masculinity. 40k called the "Angels of Death." If you go deep enough into the lore there were women transformed via similar processes to the SM creation, and the BIG E was like, nah, heretics, girls are icky, burn them. The only women the BIG E evennkept close to him throughout the great crusade were literally called "untouchables" (Sisters of Silence) again, the Imperium are the bad guys, this was obvious even back in the days of the highly un serious "Rogue Trader" aka 40k 1st edition. People like arch lack enough media literacy that they think the lore is telling them the Imperium are the good guys... Even though it's written in the tone of literal propaganda, on purpose, sort of like the starship troopers movie.

      They're lost Legions, not Chapters, there are thousands of Chapters (and many, many lost Chapters as well) but only 20 Legions, and no technically that's not possible. I'm not one of these mouthbreathers that thinks there shouldn't be women marines ever, but the lore is very clear that the Emperor only used males (and every reference to them in the HH novels I've seen always still refer to them as "brothers"). Sure, the technology was available, the Emperor COULD have done it if he wanted to, but he didn't. Your best bet for making a truly "lore accurate" female Chapter would be to say that they're Primaris and that Cawl has advanced the technology enough in the intervening ten thousand years to get around the Emperor's artificial gender limitations (which would make sense for a Techpriest, why are we wasting 50% of possible applicants, after all?).
      However, at the end of the day, all of the different Legions and Chapters are just excuses to paint your tiny action figures whatever colors you prefer, so you can do whatever the hell you want. Hell, make everything in Warhammer a woman if it'll add more sand to Arch's vag, his tears are just delicious.

      @@TheBestMCScavenger I don't understand what you mean by "how do we know the lost chapters" We don't, that's why they're lost, and there are a massive number of them lost in the warp or in battle or whatever in the last 10,000 years that you can use as inspiration. And sure, I did know what you meant, but there is literally an order of magnitude difference between a Legion and Chapter, which should be pointed out for the sake of others (and being corrected shouldn't bother you in the first place, it wasn't an attack my dude.). And while you're correct about information control and the biases of the fluff text you can find in the rulebooks, the Horus Heresy novels are generally written from a third person omniscient perspective, and while a certain narrator could be unreliable, when there are two Primarchs having a private discussion where they refer to the lost Primarchs as their brothers it seems more believable.
      Listen, I personally don't care at all, hell, make all Space Marines women, but from a purely lore oriented perspective we DO know that the Emperor purposefully made the process to only work with males, which makes an all female Successor Chapter impossible, unless you make up a Chapter with a level of secrecy equivalent to the Grey Knights or make them a new Primaris group and, don't get me wrong, if you want to do that then more power to you, the only point of all this lore is to justify why my tiny plastic men are red and yours are purple or whatever. It's all nonsense.

There is no instance of a 1:1 female Astartes anywhere in the lore, and as it stands the gene seed is only stable in males, though I'm no geneticist, so I don't know if it is possible even theoretically.

    40K's Imperium is so obviously fascistic in the lore it's hardly surprising it features misogynist structures within its institutions. The whole point is its supposed to be obviously bad and awful. It's not even supposed to really be seen as functioning as a proper government, with two groups who on paper should be on the same side going to war with each other over their random interpretations of the scribbles found on the bathroom wall of some building some guy decided was sacred. The problem is that some subset of the fans see what is clearly meant to be a miserable, awful, evil place and are like "yeah that seems cool". Not realizing, apparently, that they'd most likely not end up on one of the in universe propaganda posters lying about the state of the universe, but rather they'd be a lobotomized box loading cyborg.

    Heres the best part of Warhammer 40k that people like Arch just cant wrap their heads around: 40k has a canon so loose that officially, by GWs own statement, both all official lore and all fan lore are both canon and non-canon.
    How it works is really funny, but works perfectly. The official lore is the rumors and hearsay that the common citizens of the galaxy know. It may or may not be true. Your own fan lore is what your own faction believes. It may or may not be true. When you fight against someone whose lore disagrees with yours or you dont like, you get to say "those heretics believe X, but we showed them the truth through our might!" and so does your opponent.
    For example, if I have an all female Marine army and you dont like that, then I get to say that my female marines fought a battle against a bunch of deluded fools who thought we were men because we were Space Marines and believed the common misconception that female Marines are impossible. *You* get to say that you fought against a bunch of male marines who had deluded themselves into believing they were female and were wearing armor to match. Both of our accounts of the fight become rumors floating around in the setting, neither account is 100% the truth, even though youre allowed to consider it 100% the truth for yourself.
    The whole setting is literally built around these conflicting lore bits giving factions reason to fight their own allies and so on. GW even left 2 Primarchs (Space Marine super-generals basically) completely without lore or even names *for the express purpose* of letting you say "my really weird guys that dont fit in anywhere are so weird because theyre from one of those super secret guys, and you cant say I'm wrong".

    Fun fact the space marines are divided up by chapters lead by a primarch there are 20 primarchs and out of them 2 of them have almost 0 lore about them specifically so you can do whatever the hell you want encase if any of the other 18 primarchs or sub chapters (and there are a 1000) don’t fit into what you want to do so in short you can do whatever you want with the game because it’s a game and designed to be fun and get you to spend money

    • @lorehammer40k4
      @lorehammer40k4 6 месяцев назад

      The original 20 are called Legions. Chapters were a division within a Legion, and when the Legions were broken up to decentralize power they just moved to Chapters being the largest unit. Also, there are definitely more than 1,000 Chapters now. When the Legions were first divided into the Successor Chapters, they say there were roughly 1,000 (which still doesn't make sense, they say the Ultramarines were around 10,000 strong during the Heresy and each Chapter is 1,000 Marines, and while most Legions were much smaller that still means there should be more than 1,000 Second Founding Chapters alone, but I digress), but there have been numerous Foundings since.
      At the end of the day though, it's all just an excuse to have the tiny action figures be painted any color, so who really gives a shit?

      They were meant to be mixed at first, and sculpts were even made for female space Marines. But, it was the mid 80s, and the customers (British boys) didn't buy the female models, so GW took them out of rotation. Then, as the plastic Space Marine kit was released (originals were metal minis), the sculptors literally forgot to add female Marines. And when customers began to ask, "Why are all the Space Marines dudes, btw?" GW basically wrote one sentence/paragraph that explained the Emperor tried and failed to make em' and then forbid the attempt of making female Astartes.
      This paragraph from the 80s has essentially been the ONE AND ONLY lore exploring this "all-male-theme" since then, with only a nod, a wink and a reprint of the same paragraph once in 40 years and some literal 500 novels.

  • @luckysevenow1872

    I wouldn't mind if they introduced female space marines, but IMO it *needs* to be well written and at least make sense within the Warhammer universe. I take no issue with the idea of female marines, but like ffs, it _cannot_ be done like Rowling did when she retroactively made Dumbledore gay out of nowhere. Make them get all of the same augmentations male space marines get, find some way to make the Imperium's change of policy make sense (maybe Guilliman, the Lion and Cawl all decide to expand the options for recruitment due to some new crusade they are waging, or from some new threat that emerges), and find some way to do it that doesn't push out the Sororitas, etc, and I think they'd have a lot harder time posing any real objection to it.
    Tbh I do think that going too far with altering the setting kinda kills _some_ of the commentary that exists there, though. 40k was originally designed as a satire, and is clearly a product of the time it was first created, so I think changing it too much now sorta kills some of the commentary there. IMO, having female space marines _does_ sorta take away any commentary that could be made by Space Marines solely being male, as one could view it that Space Marines are a kind of logical extreme of a lot of the militaristic masculine fantasies, being trans-human power armoured super warriors that are each individually worth a dozen Guardsmen, if not many more. Sororitas are similar to marines in that they have power armour, bolters, etc, but are essentially an organization of militarized battle nuns, who fight in the Emperor's name with a batshit insane level of zeal. IMO, you can kind of view it as commentary on how this vast empire is so militarized that they'd go as far as to use a loophole to militarize their nuns because women weren't normally allowed to become Astartes. On another note, women are also perfectly able to be part of the Imperial Guard, and there are plenty of female characters across most of the other factions, so it's not like there isn't any representation. If anything one could say it's yet another statement on the Imperium's brutality and blind adherence to archaic beliefs that they'll use women as rank and file soldiers and as indoctrinated battle nuns, but won't give them the honor of becoming an Astartes.
    Overall, I still don't have any actual issue with female space marines as long as they actually write it into the story well and don't carelessly retcon stuff, I just do think there should be some more analysis and reading done before people just advocate so strongly for disregarding the lore.

      @@Alex_Vir If you go far back enough in the lore there are also half Eldar space marines, Imperial Guard beastmen, and the very first named Inquisitor Obiwan Sherlock Clousseau. Stuff from the 1980s Rogue Trader era was very experimental, often goofy, and they hadn't really figured out the setting yet so there's a lot of stuff that would be incongruous with how the lore has evolved if you just brought it back with minimal justification. iirc, when they reintroduced Squats to the setting the justification was basically "They've been around the whole time, we just never really talked about them until now" which isn't very cool or interesting.
      I'm on the same page as OP, if they're gonna do it it needs to work with the established lore, though the Fabius Bile stuff I've seen mentioned in other comments is a good starting point.

I mean when the Emperor teleported onto the flagship of his beloved son The Warmaster Horus and defeated him in a battle he could barely win. I mean a battle that Horus stood no chance in. I mean a battle that forced the Emperor to cast off his humanity to bring himself to harm his beloved son. Yeah, the lore changes. A lot. That's the big thing that always gets to me with all of this. They act like the rules and lore have always been what they are and have never changed or evolved. Even if the version they're holding up is relatively recent.
    I do need to mention that due to the competitive side as well as GW's absolute iron grip on the IP, homebrew is less "standard" than in ttrpgs and such. It also might have to do with the fact that the game is so expensive that perhaps the majority of the fans don't actually play it, so the canon of the universe is all they have. So that may be part of why they get kneejerk on anything they see as lorebreaking.

  • @rustkitty
    @rustkitty 6 месяцев назад

    As a 30k (Horus Heresy) lore understander, I think there are two reasons why there are only male space marines, and neither are what Arch said. Also it can be fixed.
    1) The Big E is just a -raging- stoic sexist. He made several sex-segregated factions, including the male-only Space Marines and the female-only Sisters of Silence. During the time when he had the highest mastery over science and tech, and absolute rule over his empire. This is different from the Sisters of Battle, who are women-only (not female-only, so a transwoman sister is lore friendly) purely as a legal loophole because after a previous uprising the Ecclesiarchy was banned from raising "men at arms"... but haha, nobody said anything about women at arms.
    2) Originally the Space Marine legions were commanded by the primarchs. These are "sons" (altered clones) of the emperor and the main implant that makes a space marine (the gene seed) was derived from the primarch's genes. Of course opposite sex clones are an old trope of sci-fi so that's a crappy excuse. But for sure if anything in the process is tied to karyotype that could somewhat explain why male primarchs can only "beget" male space marines. But it was stated in-universe that it's not an insurmountable challenge, so I assume the Emperor just didn't feel like putting effort into fixing the problem because of the aforementioned sexism. It's worth noting that compatibility between baseline humans and space marine transhumans is already pretty bad. During recruitment they do extensive biological and psychological screening and still there is a failure rate during transition. So the tech was never that reliable.
    But enough complaining! About 5 years ago the Primaris Space Marines were introduced. These are genetically altered with the Emperor's permission, worked on by the genius leader of the tech cult of Mars, Archmagos Cawl. He did extensive tinkering on all legions' genetic material including those that turned to Chaos during the Heresy. So here are a few scenarios:
    1) Ministorum Commission: As said above, the Ecclesiarchy can't raise men at arms. The Ecclesiarch would find it useful to convince the Archmagos to adapt gene seeds to turn the Sisters of Battle into real transhumans equal to the Space Marines. I think Cawl would go for it, both to flex his skills and score a favor with his fellow High Lord (these are basically the pope of earth and the pope of Mars respectively). Also some Space Marine factions are always starving for recruits. I imagine once the tech exists they would pounce on the opportunity to get their own and expand their recruitment pools to be sex independent.
    2) Lost Legions Reborn: Originally there were 20 legions and 20 primarchs. But even before the Horus Heresy, two of those were lost and forgotten. We only know that the Emperor doesn't like to talk about it, and even the primarchs only dare to mention it in hushed tones. Were they early converts to Chaos? Rebels who rejected the Emperor? Or even (gasp) women?! We know for sure that Cawl has access to the gene seed of traitor legions. Is it so far fetched that he also has access to the lost legions and at least one of them were lead by a daughter of the Emperor? Again, the need to double the space marine recruitment pool in these troubled times should override whatever apprehension they may feel about reversing the Emperor's decision to wipe them out.
    3) Idle Hands: Cawl is a barely-human superintellect. He may just chisel away at the biocompatibility limitations as a background process and suddenly make a breakthrough when he has nothing better to do.
    Overall, if you can produce the minis (and don't intend to participate in official competitions) a Primaris sisterhood or a mixed Primaris chapter is perfectly lore friendly. Not so much with the older marines, but you can always just declare that your minis are not lore friendly and avoid dealing with people who consider that a deal breaker.

(We literally had people ringing us at 8pm at night to get us to solve game disputes for them. We were supposed to just be telesales, but the fans had other ideas.)
    Also, since the gene seed is on the Y chromosome, it is fully canon that a whole chapter of Space Marines could be trans women and have traditions going back to the Emperor himself where they deck out and convert their armour to be completely femme, if a player wanted to do that. There are several lost Primarchs in the lore, specifically to give players the flexibility to make their own marine chapter with it's own traditions and so on.
