They are indeed. It’s a pity sellers want way too much for them now. I bought this 612s-xl for £15 in 2008. My 1012s-xl cost me £50 not long afterwards.
I have one also however I don’t have the power cord .. could I use another adapter and also how could I record with it since I can’t relay on Kodak to process the footage anymore, can I rig it to my computer?
Hi Ed! So sorry for the late reply! I think it was a neg film from the beginning, perhpas an old Agfa copying stock or an old Orwo colour stock. The colours are quite pastel and muted, but I like it - it has a nice vintage feel. Quite like the Agfa stocks of the early 1980s. Mediaswitch in Belgium did the telecine, however I'm not sure the optimising program used is a good thing or not. It makes it a little sharper, but I think it also ads a bit of a video feel to it. I much prefer the Rank Cintel transfers I used to get back in the day. They were only SD, but so rich and full of detail, but most importantly it looked like film!
Hi Jamie, Thanks - really interesting. Beautifully shot as ever. I've been talking to Alfred at Kahl for a while and shot a few DS8 rolls - am waiting on their return from processing. BTW I've started a company doing near 3k 8mil and 16 mil transfers - called on8mil (www.on8mil.com). Our scans are at 2448 x 2048, true frame by frame, uncompressed (with compression added later in post if required) dependant on what the customer wants. We can do any compression, incl Pro-Res, H264, MPEG etc. There is no sharpening, stabilisation or grain removal, unless requested. Positive and neg film. Nice fast turn-around and great prices, based here in London. I'll send you some samples if you like? Ed.
Edmund Ward Hi Ed! Sorry for the late reply again! I would really love to see some samples! Must look you on social networks - easier to stay in contact!
+Caspersdaddy Wow, now that's some really sharp Super 8mm footage! Can't find any information on the Kahl film stock online. They probably bought bulk film from different suppliers? Doesn't look like 'Orwo-Chrom' reversal to me, which was just 25 ASA daylight (Super 8mm as well), had a lot of trouble with blues and greens (no budget for R&D in Eastern Germany back in the day :-/ ) and was much softer and grainier and (as far as I know) not available in Western Europe. The old folks from East Germany even make jokes about the Orwo color stock (it wasn't that bad to be fair, but nothing compared to Kodak or Agfa). I wish they still made this stock though. Would look like a color movie straight out out the 1950s! I've seen a lot of the Orwo color reversal uploaded. Their B/W films are ace though! I just shot two reels of expired (1988!) Orwo-Chrom UT15 (25 ASA daylight, 16mm - which I rated as 12 ASA due to the age) as fun and test reels. It's being hand processed with the original chemicals as we speak. Let's see.... Anyway: this is great film stock and looks way better than I remember the old late 1970s Agfa Moviechrome (40 ASA), which was clearly inferior to the fantastic old Kodachrome 40. Yep, I go way back! :-) Might be a more recent fine grain version of Agfa stock(?) Looks quite Kodak-ish to me. Top notch processing, scanning and grading, the latter not being overdone (which I like). Very nice footage! Thanks for sharing. P.S. my humble recommendation: stay as far away as you can from any currently produced color reversal film stock! Trust me! You might want to go for Kodak Vision 3 negative. Widely available processing (ECN-2), can be scanned anywhere and it is currently my favorite color film stock - by far!
18 fps seems dreamy. Nice shots. Still look great
These Elmos including its big brother the 1012S-XL are amazingly sharp. If you didn't know any better you would say this was 16mm footage.

very cool
Thank you!
no problem !
Nice neutral tones - almost like neg film. Who did the Telecine? They did a good job.

Thanks Ed! I will have to give your transfer a go some time! ;)

+Caspersdaddy Can't believe I haven't sent you any yet! Sorry so busy. Will send some very soon!
Pretty good!! Wich film stock is this? Kahl's color reversal films used to be Agfa...
I'm not sure, I think it is an old Agfa stock, but could also be an old Orwo colour stock too.

I think it was caller ORWO UT-18.
How do you get the speed right 18 to 24-25 FPS, in the post process?
Did you do the telecine yourself? Or did you have a company that did the scanning?
Could this be the old ORWO film with its own reversal process ?
Is it still available?
Petko Iordanov l think it could be , but l am really unsure.
Very cool film, apart from the colors. Nice and sharp. Which camera do you use?
Hi there! It was the Elmo 612s-xl as mentioned in the film title. Very sharp lens. Looks even sharper when you shoot at 24fps.
wow, I can't even see any s8 jitter.
Hi, l shot this using the framemaster pressure plate, which reduces jitter.
