The saxophone was very central to Van's musical palette. It was Morrison's original instrument. He later picked up guitar as he moved from jazz to pop/rock/blues in his teens. It's also key to his vocals. You can hear the legato in his singing, much like a tenor sax might sound. Despite his overall grumpiness and odd beliefs, Van is one of the greatest musical artists and songwriters of his time. He was often suggested as poet laureate of Ireland.

Van is still creating albums and touring now and he’s gotta be in his late 70’s or even his 80’s now. He’s one of the greatest musicians, singers and songwriters of all time.

Van was the frontman and lead vocalist when he belonged to one of the British invasion bands from Northern Ireland 'THEM' during the '60's. 'THEM's' international smash hit single "Gloria" released back in 1964 was smokin' hot for that time period and might be worth checking out. "Gloria" was covered by various recording artists over the decades. Many young musicians who started putting together and forming a band known as (garage bands) in the U.S. played this song auditioning prospects to join and become a member of their group in the mid-sixties. 🔍🔎🎤🎸🎹🥁🔊🔥☮🎧

I remember when I first heard this I thought "stoned me just like JellyRoll" huh? Then I found out he was a musician. Jelly Roll Morton (I think that's right).
Love that you said it makes you remember memories you never had. That is such a great compliment about this song.

Lovely song. Van was great as a rocker in the 60's with his band "Them". Very different from his later style.

Moondance is one of the great albums of the 20th century. Every song on it is a gem. Check out "These Dreams of You" and "Glad Tidings" from that album. "The Way Young Lovers Do" from Astral Weeks really cooks in parts. Morrison works the band into a triple meter fever, so to speak, in a long passage evoking the swing of Charles Mingus and others.

People sometimes let their perception of how prickly and contentious Van is cloud their view of his legacy, but the man is/was a musical genius and you can't deny the monumental twin achievements of Astral Weeks and Moondance. And it's not as if he never followed these with greatness either. It's one thing to put out such masterpieces in your early 20s but to continue to justify that reputation is another challenge altogether. And yet, he still managed to do that.

"This song is planting memories I never had" - nicely put. And well spotted - I can see comparisons to "The Weight" in it too - I'd not noticed that before. If you haven't heard them yet, "Into the Mystic" and "Tupelo Honey" are must-hears. For a deeper cut I'd try "Ballerina" off "Astral Weeks".
