What's weird to me is that everyone in my family has a personality disorder except me. I'm so grateful. I have no idea what was different with me. I was suspected to have schizotypal but it was ruled out and I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder instead.

Imagine if Frasier's catchphrase was, _"I'm being empathetic"_ instead of, _"I'm listening."_

I think with empathy, sometimes is is necessary and useful to 'fake it til you make it'. Often acting as if I care can evoke, over time, the real emotion.

The way you described how your family dynamic shaped the way your emotional/empathy expression is interesting because I had somewhat of a similar role growing up, though as an only child. But as someone that's also neurodivergent, I know that can also impact the way one expresses empathy. Perhaps that might be of some interest to you as someone that has talked before about being dyslexic?
On not conforming to social conventions, I would argue that it can sometimes be the most empathetic thing one does. There are plenty of social conventions out there that can be downright harmful to some people, not to mention the selective empathy that society still has.
Lastly, I would have to think what you described as a 'maternal energy' in other therapists that were able to express and pick up on other peoples' feelings well might also have a lot to do with women being over-represented in psychology and other related fields, on average.

Thank you for disclosing some details of your own life from about 23:00 onward. As someone interested in a career in clinical psychology, i'm unsure about the degree to which this empathetic ability can be learned. Hearing about your personal experience around this topic helped me feel optimistic and hopeful about my own journey.

@sallyann985 Yeah you got me there, i found this channel quite recently :)
I'm especially grateful for this particular instance of self-disclosure as i somewhat identify with his experience. It kinda helps me consider a new perspective on self-disclosure in clinical contexts as well.

I don't know how I would feel having that type of person as my therapist. I would hate to know I'm primarily just a subject of study like a lab rat.

I have an ex-friend who became a therapist, which surprised me because she has zero empathy for anyone except herself. She's very closed off but I guess if you think about it, that protects her from her clients because their emotions do not affect her.

Even with listening to both of these empathy podcast episodes I still don't really understand what the difference is between empathy and sympathy. They just seem to me still like the same thing. Even though people describe sympathy as how you would describe pitty. Are all languages like this when it comes to definitions?
