I grew up in Burlington and spent soooooo much time at Aladdin's Castle playing games while my parents shopped. At 14:55, it was a Sears Portrait Studio.

Knowing that game room was an Aladdin's Castle back in the day makes me sad. Miss the heyday if the arcades. So much of my parents' money went into arcade games @ Aladdin's Castle. 😁

I grew up in Mt. Pleasant, the next main town west of Burlington. Westland Mall was in its prime when I was in high school. I remember going to Musicland, Spencer Gifts, and Waldenbooks at the mall. There were also tons of women's clothing stores in the mall, and the food court was full of national brands like Orange Julius and Wendy's. I left southeast Iowa to go to college in the early '80s, and it's fascinating to see the empty shell of the old mall in this video.

Every time I saw that area with the high ceiling, it reminded me of Capital Mall in Jefferson City, MO. That mall was dead 20 years ago, if you're going to be in central MO, it might be worth checking out. Interesting is that 40min away, Columbia Mall in Columbia, MO, is doing pretty decent, at least by mall standards.

Honestly not a bad mall but im surprised since the 90s they couldn't nothing about the glaring issues. I guess if the had owners who cared it may have been a different story. But unfortunately the reality is what it is and westalnds time is almost up. Great Video!

So the old Younkers wing had a lot of places. The store next to what was foot locker was a radio shack. The store next to the DMV was pearl vision then a local insurance agent. The across from Maurice's was McGregor's the furniture store. And whats now Iowa works, the previous store was another Younkers, but HomeGoods version.

I love your dead mall content, I hope you won't stop doing it. However, you mentioned in a video a few weeks ago you experienced a bit of burn out. Have you considered maybe broadening what your doing to perhaps cover the history of some of the stores in these dead malls similar to what Company Man or Bright Sun Films do? That'd give you something mall related that you could still do while you're at home to give you a break from the normal Dead Malls production. You do such a good job that I'd definitely give any content you produce a chance, even if it went beyond retail!

when you had mentioned this mall and southern hills are twins-ish, they really do look very similar but in their own ways. bc southern hills mall was my go-to mall when i used to lived in sioux city when i was baby to 6 yrs old, that's the mall i would go to with my little play mate when i was younger, my cousins and my parents.. from age 6 to present live in omaha and we have a dying mall call oaks view mall, used to be the best mall to hang out in the 90's and early 00's now slowly stores one by one are leaving/moving or went out of business and few name brand food places are still there. but Dillard's will be leaving to go to the old younkers at Westroads mall that is basically taking over as the only indoor shopping mall and Jc Penny's might be leaving as well not sure on that one. but it is very sad to see what was the coolest hang out spot in 90's/00's slowly disappeared.....

Dec. 11 an article came out, and You may have already heard, “PREIT” has filed bankruptcy. I don’t know how many malls they own, but our hometown mall - Woodland Mall of Grand Rapids, Michigan is in their list of assets. The mall still operates but it’s not what it use to be, nor full of stores anymore. I’m guessing there are others on the list.

I was never crazy about Woodland Mall was an alright mall haven't been to Woodland 8 or 9 years. Seems like it's still doing good having Von Maur, Versona just opened , they closed where I live The Crossroads Mall Kazoo. Abercrombie & Fitch just to name a few, was surprised they have an FYE never saw it when I was ever shopping at Woodland Mall. I hope no slum lord buys Woodland if PREIT sells the mall. Rivertown is where I shop if I go to GR get up there after Christmas Rivertown is my favorite mall in West Michigan.

Sad, Burlington is on my list of city's to move to if I have the chance...I used to be quite the mallrat back in High school here in Oregon, I'd usually go to the Clackamas Town Center Mall, But sometimes I'd go to Mall 205 or Loyd Center in Portland.

hey man! late night and stumbled across your channel on accident while looking for some old Westland stores.
really applaud the studying and effort you put into these videos. one question though! I worked in Westland from 2022-2023 at the Buckle. I know that specific Buckle location has been in the same spot for 20+ years. It may not be an anchor store, but Westland would definitely be much worse off if Buckle closed as well. is there any reason you didn’t make mention of it in either of your Westland episodes? either way I hope you’re doing well on your well deserved break.
ps: Westland actually very very recently got bought out by yet another company named 4th Dimension Properties. Their portfolio of past work on dying malls is pretty great. Thought you’d find it interesting!

I grew up in the 80’s and early 90’s… It was truly the golden age of the powerful American consumer economy. We are a nation in decline. So many cultural institutions closed…Sears, Toys r Us,etc. I feel so sad for the young generations who will only see the decay of what once was. The end of the American Empire.

Sadly west burlington and burlington are not one town.
West burlington originally killed the downtown burlington shopping. When they opened Westland mall in 1977.
But as times changed. The downtown open air mall. Is popular again.
Also sadly the town ripped out the block of Jefferson walking mall. The gazebo was the staple of the walking mall. Moved to.perkins park.
Side note: East burlington . 😆
