Polishing Our Rough Rockhounding Treasures

- I take the chalcedony, banded agates, moss agates and even some common opal with chalcedony veins that we found while rockhounding and run them through the tile saw, shaping them for polishing. Once they're shaped it's time to polish them with the diamond polish pads creating some of my favourite mineral specimens of what we've collected.

So this video almost didn’t come out tonight. I had so many little things go wrong while filming and editing it, but I hope you enjoy it. It was a challenge but a good one. Thank you to those who helped me out. You know who you are.
I’ll get to replying to any and all comments this week, and just wish you all a great couple weeks ahead.
Until the next one, happy hounding, and much love from down under.
Tonight... it's 6:12am!
Coffee time.
Thanks for making my morning better.
Go wrong!? No you did an awesome job with the video. Don't let what you enjoy doing turn into something that stresses you out, if that happens it is no longer fun.
Thanks for all the hard work on the videos Man it really makes them fun to watch!
Awesome video babe, nothimg wrong with it! Have faith in your abilities!
I watched from start to finish. Awesome all the way through. Do what you love and thanks for bringing us with. I hunt rocks with my kids and would love to cut and polish a few like you have. Makes me want to go out and look for treasure mostly.
I remember you said, you work in child care. I don't know what age they are, but I have used agates and jaspers with ugly exteriors to teach kids about inner beauty. How some people are broken and damaged on the outside, but that we are all beautiful treasures on the inside. The looks on their faces when they see the inner beauty of the rock is priceless!
Man, that, that is a brilliant idea. I hope you don’t mind, but I am definitely going to use that. Thank you mate. Honestly, such a brilliant brilliant idea.
@@Rookie_Rockounding Definitely! Thanks for all the adventures!
That's brilliant! Thanks for your humanity Walt, things like that and people like you that make the earth a better place to live!
@@truckerenoch8824 thats awesome, specially in an age where people only look and judge the outside of others and objects. Those verry people are broken on the inside. God bless you
Remember Mate...hobbies are for releasing tension, not creating it😉. You can take a deep breath now because all your pieces can out stunning, especially the last one!!!! Hugs from Oregon
Thank you winnie, honestly, it was an eye opener. I love doing this so much and sharing it, but I think I started over thinking this one. I wanted to share that for its honesty, but you are 110% correct. I’ve learnt to keep my mind in check when need be. I really appreciate your comment so much. Big love from down here ☺️👍
@@Rookie_Rockounding can you email me sir email is skippy_876.1999@yahoo.com thank you
My sweet friend, I hate that you felt so anxious. You're great! Never forget this. You started this out having fun. Keep having fun because we all have fun right along with you😄. I'm glad you left the blue on the way you did. I like as much of a natural look as possible and still keep the shine of a Polish if that makes sense 😉
Chrysti Gilbert Keener
Yeah that makes total sense, it’s a beautiful contrast the rough and the polish. Thank you genuinely for your beautiful comment chrysti. 🙏✨
Your wife is right, this is your hobby don't stress about the videos. You done awesome and the rocks look stunning 😍
Anna Milligan
Yeah she’s a keeper for sure. Thank you Anna 😊
About that anxiety...look mate I love when you download videos, but I think we all want you to love what you do on your downtime too . Love the vids and the rocks too!!
Karina Rivera
Thank you Karina, yeah it can be daunting sometimes, I always want to deliver my best, but the challenge sometimes is as precious as the sense of achievement I get when I’m able to pop these videos up for you guys. I get so much enjoyment out of the whole process. I just love it 😉👍
If there was any mistakes I don’t know if we would care. Your videos are so relaxing and it feels like I’m sitting down with an old friend and just talking and enjoying what Mother Nature gives us to look at. Your love of rock hounding and cutting and polishing had become one of my favorite things to watch. Thank you and all involved.
Couldnt agree more!
Thanks guys
Kim Moore
Thank you Kim, that’s such a cool way of describing it. I see it as the same hey. Just chatting with friends and sharing the rocks. I’m pretty lucky to have such cool people to share these times with. 😊
Happy Friday RR, thanks for sharing the goods with us nerdy rockhounding tubers.👀 Glad you were finally able to relax, sure hope you know that all of us here have ZERO expectations of you and are just super grateful that you take the time to film, edit and share your experiences and adventures with the rest of us! 👍 IMO The hobby is for your satisfaction my friend, if the filming, editing and conceiving of content and such takes away from that experience, then I would recommend re-focusing on why you rockhound in the first place! I doubt there are many expectations so please just enjoy the experiences and the rest will fall into place~ I totally appreciate how stressful editing clips and piecing it together in some kind of cohesive fashion can be and personally, I think that you do an above average job sir of cobbling together interesting content for us to enjoy~ 😁 Just love the variety of materials you find and expose the hearts of, multiple colors and mixes of minerals makes for fun and interesting finds. Not sure if your anxiety was about making cuts that bring out the best in the rock or if it was about the quality of the material afterwords or if that was just about taking good video? Regardless, I hope you know that we all come here. not because you find the best materials or create the best cabs or freeforms etc but because you are a really good person with a great personality who has a wonderful passion for a very cool hobby and you have 100% of my support! Ok so the rock at 7:28 with the common opal is magnificent like caramel candy. Very much enjoyed hearing your thoughts on each stone and your intentions when cutting and polishing, I do that when I pick em up, try to consider what I'd do with it before I put it in the bag, if I don't see it I leave it~ PS.. Those look similar to dendrites, moss growths like plants inside the chalcedony~ Video was great, even if you didn't think so, thanks again have a great weekend my friend~
Backcountry with Shaughn
Heyyyy Shaughn! Man thank you dude. No I just have always had anxiety since a kid. Sometimes it’s a beast though, but mostly, it’s just from overthinking haha. I got a busy brain. I’ve learnt to make friends with it though, and I think I was just overthinking everything. I really appreciate your help man.
And ultimately, overcoming it, gives such a greater sense of achievement knowing that it was all for nought, the anxiety I mean Haha!
Man those agates were a surprising even to me, just so grateful I get to relax and collect them, and also work with them. Just so lucky and I love sharing the whole thing with you mate. I hope your week is a brilliant one brother 👊🍻
Listen to you talk! You know so much now and you are so humble about it. It is such a joy to watch your videos. Keep up the good work.
Lisa Pfeiffer
Thank you Lisa, it’s because of them and you good people sharing knowledge that I can sorta know what I’m talking about haha! 😊
This is great because it shows you don’t need super expensive or even specific lapidary equipment to do some top notch cutting and polishing work. It’s been the most insightful video I’ve found thus far.
Man, thank you Zeke, that really means a lot mate. I’m really glad you found it helpful.
Ah, I felt for you when you were talking about the anxiety you felt. Don't go there! Rockhounding isn't about success or failure - it's about the journey. Just relax and enjoy the process - the good, the bad and the ugly. Anybody who's ever been there will understand.
Thank you Katy. Yeah anxiety has been a beast I’ve had to make friends with since a kid, don’t know why it crept up on me that day but working with those beauties certainly did the trick to ease the nerves 😉
Thank you again for your kind message 🙏
Your wife is your true Gem, you know that right? We enjoy watching you enjoy your hobby. We don’t care if your videos are not perfect. That’s not what this is about. Enjoy yourself, and we are enjoying you. That basalt with agate bubbles and the moss agate... amazing!!!!!
You are spot on Dena, she is the greatest gem I’ve found. Not my wife YET, but I’m hoping one day she will be 😊😉✨
Thank you for your lovely comment. 😊
Love the new video Frookie. The editing and voice over were spot on. That basalt with all the little inclusions/bubbles is so gorgeous, and the nodule at the end with dendrite 💋.The rocks you collected polished up beautifully. We always love a new video from you, but listen to your wife, she is a very smart cookie. We love watching you more because of your passion and excitement for what you are doing. If it’s not fun, you are working too hard. Please don’t work too hard.
betojdesigns
Ohhh thank you guys. Honestly, I love this more than I can say, and although there are times where I’m challenged, the sense of achievement and community that comes from the whole process is so precious to me. Thank you honestly for your kind words. 😊
I’m enjoying it more and more each day with each rock and each new good person I get to meet.
May you guys have a brilliant week ahead my friend.
Those formations on that last agate are what many normally refer to as "dendrites." So I would classify that as a dendritic agate. Now which mineral the dendrites are made of is hard to say by the image alone, but it is a stunner! So glad you were able to rescue that one!
Denis Weimer
Thank you Denise! That’s super helpful! 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Wow what qualities of cutting stones and you're master in polish.
Buddy I don't know how you do it, but every polish video is better than the last. The 1st basalt one, and the moss agates though. All these beauties are breathtaking! They are tube agates, the blue one, Pauley gouged out! Beautiful ones all! Thank you for sharing!!!
gina lanning
Heyyyyy gina! Thank you sis, honestly I’m so lucky to be able to find these pieces of art to work with.
I hope you are well my friend. Ohhhh and I went out last week hounding with a good friend and what we were finding was some beautiful red jaspers. I’ll be making a video of it in a few weeks but I remember you said you’d like something red, so I’ll be making sure to save you some to send you. Hopefully before Christmas. Hooooooooopefully 🤞🤞🤞😊

Great video! Because of your videos, and the detailed discriptions you give, my rock hounding trips are much more fun, interesting, and informed. Please keep the videos coming of those amazing finds!
All of your pieces display their natural aspects beautifully!
You have a great eye for shaping and polishing the rocks to highlight the unique features. just beautiful
I lovr your videos i have really bad morning anxiety every day and i wake up and watch u cut and hound and it reminds me how beautiful our earth is and it sets me in a good mind frame so thank u for making this even tho u had anxiety!
kiersten gallagher
Ah see! That is exactly why I left it in the video, it’s always a little bit easier to deal with knowing you’re not the only one. I’ve had it since a child. It’s good sometimes and others it’s horrible. But it always passes. That’s what you gotta remember, it will pass. Thank you for sharing Kiersten 😊
Wow. Those were absolutely beautiful. You did a wonderful job of cutting and polishing. There is art in each piece, and you have great vision in bringing it out. Keep up the great work. Enjoy the videos and look forward to the next. Have a great week. Davin
Davin Kates
Thank you Davin! I’m just so lucky at the art I get to find in this area ✨
You are an artist in every aspect. Your senses are dialed in to your hobby, when and where to go, who goes along and what path to take, what to pick up or keep,...etc. You are one with your element! An absolute brilliant piece of work, this video. So calming, so ethereal. A combination of your voice, which is very soothing, the artistic angst which draws in the viewer and the final result, or money shot of the absolute gems upon completion. We love you and we love who you are and what you do. Namaste😊 ...Theo from southern California.

Dude I’m not gonna lie, I got chills reading that. Thank you man, genuinely massively, just thank you. You and yours have a beautiful week ahead mate! Namaste 🙏

Ha! I like that, a collab with Mother Nature. That’s exactly what it is. You’re a legend mate, and thank you! Fingers crossed we find some bluuuuuuuuuue ✨🐨
Damn, that first one you polished almost looked like a filled in scoria! Beautifully polished!
Another great video man! It takes about 4 seconds to forget you're voicing over. You got that dialed in.
Cheers!
Ah man thanks dude, I owe it to you with the support you’ve given me as a mate when I’ve been at some hectic points. That storm happened last night and I actually didn’t have time to script anything so all the voice overs were off the cuff... 😣
It was intense to film at the last minute and then realise that it was all washed out by the wind. Haha! Hectic brother. Just hectic 🤣
Hope you have a solid day at work man. I’ll talk soon brother. 🐨🐺
Absolutely beautiful.. especially that moss agate at the end! Thank you so much for doing this.. 👍👍😊
It’s been really fun to watch you progress in your hobby, love the channel
Grassguy 420
Thank you brother! You’ve been here for ages 👊
That last stone turned out gorgeous. Next time you feel anxious about cutting your stones, just gather them up and go sit under a tree for a bit. Have a conversation with them, out loud or in your noggin, and see what they have to tell you. I have to do that with the things I plant sometimes because they may not like where I put them and don't do so well, so I just sit and look at them until I can "see" where they are really going to be happy. Then I move them to that place. It sounds weird but it works for me. I like all your productions. Your best girl is right...enjoy your hobbies. They are what keeps us sane...for the most part! 😊
Roxanna Weaver
Oh man roxanna that’s seriously such a great idea. I’m actually going to do that. I know what you mean about plants, they tell us so much about what they want. Nature is just amazing.
Haha! I love that “it keeps us sain... for the most part”🤣👌
What some beautiful and fascinating stones! Thanks for great video👍
I love the first....dark brown with clear ovals, etc...The way you cut and polished that was wonderful. I wouldn't recognize its potential just seeing it rough.
Yeah they’re a beautiful stone to work with. One of my favourites. 😊
You do an amazing job with your treasures. I agree with you... I really like the way you leave a rough part. The contrast of rough and polished is eye catching. A good reminder to not judge by appearances in any aspect of life. Even the ugliest of rocks has some hidden beauty for those who take time to look deeper. Appreciation for the small gems too.
Justine Forlong
Spot on Justine, spot on. ☺️👍🙏
I Love this videos... rocks are very beautifull... congra👍🙏👏👏👏💎

Thank you for being so real in your videos, your reflections and pondering always bring such wisdom, thank you for being vulnerable!

Oh my goodness what a beautiful message. Thank you Christina “a glass of wine and a handful of rocks”. Love it! 😊
Great video! Always enjoy them and learn so much! Thanks for all your efforts in putting your videos out!
you got yourself a good Lassie there! Just always keep in mind there's thousands and thousands of rocks and you might mess up a few that could have turned out amazing but you'll never get those amazing ones until you break a few learning how to make them beautiful! That one at 9:27 o my gosh it looks like an ash plume coming out of a hole in the Earth!
I was thinking the same thing!😄
Mahtaju Strachan
Ah thank you man. That’s so true hey. I’ve gotten lucky so far and have gotten good at fixing mistakes hahaha!
Man yeah that rock is stunning. It’s only little and a weird shape, but if only you guys could see how insane it is inside. Just like an ash plume. I’m so glad I picked it up. 😉

Great video! Watching anyone go through your anxiety is rough, but I'm glad that in the end you polished those away. Mahalo for what you do🤙
Hu Keas
Yeah thank you Hu Keas, I get it often since I was a kid, so I’ve made friends with it, but sometimes I have to prove it wrong. I felt it was important to show that it’s common and okay to talk about. If that makes sense 😊
Thank you!!!
You did a awesome job!
Sometimes you just have too make your self happy. And I hope you take care of that sweet little woman you have, y'all are 2 beautiful people. I do lapidary it makes me happy, I love taking a ugly rock and making it beautiful.

Oh man thank you mate! Honestly. You’re right, I remember you first saying that, there’s no such thing as an ugly rock. So so true!
Thank you again, you honestly rock!!! Have an awesome week ahead my friend. 👍
The stones were all super cool! I still can't get past the "you gotta cut them" using dangerful power saws. :)
The diamond saws don't cut hands because they grind the rocks not cut.
@@johnriceman3235 really! Thanks, that is good to know :)
stinkygraykitty
Haha, yeah these blades won’t cut you, they’re called continuous which means they don’t have teeth so to speak. They can cut your fingernail though. 😁

Haha! That’s so cool! Hope it helps pass the time G!
I’m familiar with anxiety with how to and where to make my cuts. I'm glad your wife (Karie)? gave your confidence to carry on. I will remember that for my projects. I really don't want to be disappointed with a rock that I really love but need to see the center. I will go on so I make magic with a polishing pad. Carry on and thank you for your continued support with your videos. God Bless.

Thank you Diana, yeah she’s (Carly I mumble when I speak haha) she’s a smart cookie.
But it’s so very true. Sometimes it takes stepping away, to bring the right mind frame to carry on. Anxiety is something I’ve had since childhood, it can be hard, but it makes us enjoy the time we don’t have it even more. 😊🙏
Thank you. The rocks are so beautiful. I had a thought while watching this. This"hobby" is so much more. It's a primal connection to our earth and our relationship to nature in its infinate glory. Enjoy your art as the wonder it is.✌️

Keep it up.
Thank you for the kind words mate, it really makes me happy to know the videos are helping people get even more into rocks!!! Take care brother and happy rock times 😉👍
Greetings from Texas,USA. I am 79 years old. You have taught me SO much about why I love nature: water, forests, rocks. You introduced me to thunder eggs and how they form differently from geodes. Studying rock formation is a powerful metaphor for the upheavals, heating and cooling, etc. For how our lives evolve--tumbling etc. I pray to God the Creator, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit as your young life forms and evolves. You have taken me to rivers and reminded me of all I treasure in this challenging world. You truly are God's treasue and precious to this amazing community that has gathered to share your passion. Endless thanks from Robert in Texas. (PSALM 139)
The basalt is gorgeous! And I'm not sure if anyone has already said this but those crystals you mentioned are (almost certainly) feldspar phenocrysts!

Oh woah! Feldspar phenocrysts! Thank you!!!

Beautiful. I can't even say which is my favorite. TFS 💖🦅 🦅

Another great vid mate! 👍 found some interesting stuff this week. It's been great the last couple months. Have been dealing with some issues and coming across your videos has helped me to occupy my time. I get excited when I known I have time to go out and prospect and just enjoy my time out in nature. Thanks heaps for your help with the answers to my questions in recent videos and pointing me in the right direction. Appreciate the hard work you put in to make these videos. Have a good week mate, can't wait till the next one 😊👍✌

It is honestly a pleasure Jamie, and knowing they help you to occupy your time just makes it even more worth every part of it. I love doing it so so much, but that just makes me even happier. I hope what ever it is you’re dealing with subsides and eases for you my friend 🙏

Awesome job, My tile saw arrives tomorrow! My wife wondered why I'm so excited. I showed her how excited you were in your first first tile saw video. Now she knows. Keep up the great work, really enjoy your it.
Oh gosh I’m excited for you!!!!!! Man that’s awesome! So so cool! You’re going to love it so much. If you ever have any questions don’t hesitate to ask mate. Have funnnnnn!
Love the videos that go from rough to finished.I have 2 kilos agates from agate creek coming to me in NZ.Don't know what I'll with them till they arrive and I'm sure I'll go through the same anxiety that you went through knowing once you cut them you can't go back but you've shown some of the hints on the outside to look for. Thanks
Oh man John some of the most beautiful agates Come from agate creek! Their colours are gorgeous!
@@Rookie_Rockounding They have arrived. I used your citric acid idea to clean them and already some of them are showing amazing red ,blue and orange colours. Put about 6 into a tumble I had going at the 400 grit stage to see what happens.
Oh man that’s awesome! So cool mate!
I smiled throughout the entire video Jessie , thank you for making my Friday morning such a good one . Best regards from Lloyd way over here in Ontario Canada.
highenergyog
Thank you Lloyd, best regards to you mate, hope your week ahead is a brilliant one brother. 👊
That looks like it was a really fun day. I love the big boulders at the end of the video. Can’t wait for the next one.
Man it was such a cool day. It was a big one, and we kinda got lost, but I remember doing the same as a kid, and just loved being able to say I do it still as an adult. Haha! Thanks Michigan! Happy new year mate.
I’m sorry you had obstacles in making this video... but thank you for muscling through. It’s not annoying in any way... and your humility/ humbleness is refreshing in this world. Thank you for sharing the fruits of your hobby with us so we can see the beauty our planet has created outside the reach of our own grasp. I wish agate occurred around here. Some green jaspers and common opal... but only small amounts. A lot of quartz but cooled too quickly for great crystal formations. Some great granites with interesting inclusions... but not as impressive as the art your minerals have made. Bless you, my dude. Maryland, USA.
Hey Rookie!! You have come so far as a rockhound, as a RUclipsr, as an influencer in our hobby! The big mossy and the mossy at the end are STUNNING! You just have to remember this videos are to share your passion and growth as a rockhound, which you do so excellently!! Truly an excellent video ... well worth waiting for!
Thank you so much SeaJay, I’m so far behind in my replying and I’m just catching up now. I hope you and Denny have a brilliant weekend 👍
@@Rookie_Rockounding, we re trying to! Right now we are trying to see what these wildfires to the south-east of us are going to do!! Your videos help me escape the insanity all around me! Thank you for making these wonderful videos!
SeaJay Ballard
Oh my goodness I didn’t even think! Gosh I hope you guys are doing okay. I haven’t heard much about the fires for a little while. I’ll look it up now
The cut and polish you did on the first black stone you showed. the salt one. is wonderful!
wonderful stones! you must know that I am envying you so much!
Cesare Alessandrini
Thank you! That makes my day 😊
Let's hear it for going to work early! It got me here in record time!
Cheers m8! Have a great weekend!
Haha! Sweet man, I’m thinking of changing my upload time to early Saturday morning, Saturday night for me and us aussies so people can chill and enjoy it in the states and Canada. Don’t know. But maybe. Have a rad weekend brother.
wonderful stuff really enjoyed your visions on how the stones would look best by leaving some meat on the rock polishing parts you want to and leaving some parts raw is really awesome dude! 🎯
Travis Guide
TRAVVVVVVVV! Sup brother!!!!!! Thank you mate. Yeah it’s so good for those who don’t know what these gems look like rough, to be able to see it against what it’s can polish into.
Thanks heaps my brother!!!!
The last one is a sagenitic agate. Its sagenite dude! Lizzymoore54 really couldn't have nailed it better. She's right on the money on this one! Absolutely stunning piece. Pauly sure deserves a great pat on the back for extracting that one. I think you made the right decision to keep it as whole as possible. Too much beauty would be lost otherwise. Isn't it so hard sometimes to decide to cut them (rocks in general)? My big ones even. I'm so proud of them that it makes it difficult to decide to cut them into pieces. But it sure is rewarding when you finally do.
You have a ton of comments to go thru so I'll keep it short. 😋
Loved it as always. And don't stress out! Take a vacation if needed. We all would understand. Carly is so right. Enjoy it, have fun with your hobby. And remember, that's part of why we all love watching you! 😉 Cheers m8!

Heyyyyyyyyyyyyy Mar!!!!!! Thank you mate, yeah I honestly don’t know what it was with this vid, I think it was time as well, but my anxiety was being a jerk! Haha! Never worry though, the joy just keeps on building, and it’s challenges like these that when you over come them, you feel just that little bit more powerful over it when it rears it’s head next time.
Thank you honestly, and I hope you and your family are doing well, it was so cool hanging out with Rhondda last week, it felt like I was hanging out with you guys as well. Sounds silly but it was just so cool.
Okay, better keep responding, have an amazing week my friend. I hope it’s an awesome one 😊
Beautiful!
I like all the cuts and shapes you made, you're right it shows all the details we can zone in on. Great work mate, rock on.
Thank youuuuu! 😉👍
