I seriously love how John Green can go from talking about the sanity of a non-pizza loving person to the use of the oxford comma that I had to look up to know what it was! and this is why he is my favorite author...
Initially when I saw this video I was like "Eeeh, its's not the best cover." Several months later having read the book I realize that this cover is TIMELESSLY PERFECT.
Nerdfighter project idea: make a t-shirt/poster/coffee mug/something collection of the phrases said in these videos that are followed by "are words that have never been said before" since they sound totally bizarre out of context (/out/ of context??) Someone back me up, let's do this!
I am an aspiring designer and I loved the cover from first sight, for exactly the reasons the Yeti liked it: it's bold, it's eye-catching, it's simple, it's pleasantly ambiguous. I don't think any other design would've worked as perfectly as this one. It has become an icon.
+PeachCreamNShit The question isn't whether or not the oxford comma saves grandmothers, it's whether the oxford comma saves _more_ grandmothers than really good arrested development slash fiction does, which is doubtful.
The cover is awesome. It leave a lot to the imagination. With other books that have people on the cover it sorta forces a picture into your mind. Not only do I love it, I love that John is so happy about it.
I'm absolutely in love with the cover! This is the kind of book I would pick up if I walked into a shop and saw it. I think in the modern age simple designs are much more effective
I fangirled so hard when I saw that cover through our local bookstore window while sitting in a dark & rainy parking lot waiting for my friend. It’s hard to miss. Needless to say, I ran into the bookstore & bought it immediately.
I remember watching this and being a bit disappointed after seeing all the amazing covers that nerdfighteria had designed. I think maybe because a lot of them had been so intricate and had involved stars. I expected the actual cover to be completely different. But after reading the book about four or five times in the last year plus, I have come to love it and truly understand what it means to the book. The simplicity of it is astounding and amazing and I think it is truly phenomenal.
I remember watching this video for the first time, and LOVING the cover! Simplicity is best. I can't imagine TFiOS with any other cover, it would be wrong.
I've been in Canadian Basic Training for the past 7 (8 on friday) weeks. Last week I went with my friends to a book store and I picked up two books, a third before leaving the store. As I was about to leave with the two books I had chosen, I looked to my left and saw, in Big Red Letters "JOHN GREEN" I didn't look at the title, I just grabbed the book and ran straight to the register. I'm now almost finished with Looking for Alaska. Thank you so much John for making these books! I LOVE YOU
We did royalties calculations in my book publishing overview class today and no matter which kind of royalty system you're going by, you are making a shit ton of money. Nerdfightaria is the best marketing scheme ever! Hats off to ya
I read three of John's books before I ever knew nerdfighteria existed and now, a year after I initially immersed myself in the awesomeness that is the Vlogbrothers legacy, I can so distinctly hear John's voice in all of his characters and I love it. :)
John I'm so sorry about people's negative reactions. I just want you to know that I'm one of the people who have always loved it. I smile every time I see it in a bookstore and I can make it out in thumbnails of pictures. I'm sure I'm not the only nerdfighter who feels happy whenever they catch a glimpse of this cover anywhere :)
John, although I was a bit shocked when the cover first came out, I thought it was interesting and was excited to read the book even more. the post Sarah made about it was perfect and solidified how trusting we should be of you, your publisher and the designer. I love the cover.
I didn't like the cover when I first saw it. But after reading the book, I can't imagine any other cover. It is so perfect, so simple, so easily recognized. I see those three colors together and my mind immediately thinks "The Fault in Our Stars" no matter what I'm looking at or where I am. And honestly, Henry's explanation of the cover is just so beautiful that it makes me love it even more: "There is a white cloud. There is a black cloud. They are the same cloud."
I kind of like this cover. I think John's books are really hard to put a cover on because they don't fall into a single genre or easy to define box. So his covers aren't going to be uncomplicated and pinpointable to a single moment or character or scene. Question for John: How do you close a parenthetical statement that ends in an emoticon?
I love the cover! It's just perfect. It's so sophisticated and eye-catching. If I knew nothing about you and hadn't preordered or anything, I would pick it up off the shelf in a heartbeat. It's so different compared to most of the book covers you see for YA novels.
When I finally got the physical copy of TFiOS I was struck by how bright and bold it was. I liked it when I saw it on the screen but in real life, it looks even better.
From an artistic perspective, the cover fits all of the things to look for... echoing and repetitive shapes, diagonals, a variety of sizes and good contrast. I really don't understand why some think it's necessary to be so outspoken about their negative opinions. If you don't like it, there is no reason to try to upset John or the artist about it. I think the book is incredibly recognizable, it's easily seen on store shelves. (And brightens the actual book store itself too!)
I've always liked the cover!! :( I mean, when I first saw it I was like "oh, that's an interesting choice, it's kinda plain isn't it" but then I went on with my day. Then I read the book and was like "HOLY CRAP EVERYTHING EVER ABOUT THIS BOOK IS PERF" and the cover became an iconic symbol of my love for the book as well as the community that loves it with me. I'm sorry the initial comments were so negative.
I'm absolutely in love with the cover. I've always hated books with people on the cover because they always have the characters appear so much different than how I would envision it., and I don't like covers with someone staring me down on them. But this cover is something that would make me want to pick it up off a shelf to see what it's about. I can't wait to be able to read it. :)
John, I just finished reading looking for Alaska for the first time today and... WOW... Such an amazing book mate. I read paper towns which was just as brilliant, then I recommended it to my mum, who loved it also and now wants to read all of your books. Thanks for a great read mate.
I don't see why people are disappointed with the cover. Simple and sleek, it looks awesome. I dunno, maybe I'm the type of person who prefers simplicity over cluttered designs.
spinny chairs are the best... I read the Yeti's tumblr post about your cover, and I think she had really good reasons for liking it so much. The whole minimalist/abstraction of it seems much more appealing after reading her argument.
So I wasn't a big fan of the cover when it came out, but the other day I loaned my copy to a friend, who'd never heard of the book. She took one glance at the cover and said "Oh, I have seen that book before." I guess that's the sign of a good cover.
I loved it since it was first revealed but then I'm a bit of an art/design geek. For a book destined to become a classic, you need a cover that's destined to become iconic. Look at any classic book cover, especially published by penguin. They're masters at it.
Hey John, I'm Lizzy, I met you tonight. I just wanted to remind you that the 15th of every month is Crazy Awesome Sock Day and I think all of Nerdfighteria should participate. This started in the summer of 2010 when all my friends were preparing to go to different colleges. While we were talking about it one girl was wearing peacock socks so we decided to create this continuous holiday and think of loved ones we missed when wearing our crazy awesome socks each month! Put it on your calendar!
I liked the cover from the start. It's just perfect. The lightness (the innocence of their youth) is almost in the darkness (Death, afterlife) but it just doesn't touch.
just sharing my thoughts here, but i just finished reading an An Abundance of Katherines and i absolutely loved it. I had to read it for my summer reading, and usually i would procrastinate till the last minute to read any ol' summer reading book. but my dad went ahead and picked it up for me despite knowing my terrible procrastination. when i read the first chapter i was instantly hooked. im really looking forward to reading your other books!
HOLY CRAP ME AND MY FRIEND JUST FOUND "SUPER SAD TRUE LOVE STORY" IN A HALF PRICE BOOKS LIKE A WEEK AGO AND YOU MENTIONED IT. I feel strangely at peace with the world.
I really like the cover... It's bold, it stands out... It'd quite simple but very pretty, pus eye catching which is what you want for those who read books because of the covers. I like it, good choice :)
In a way I am kind of relieved to know I am not the only one who is not loving the cover. It is simple which is nice, the contrast in colors is nice too. However, I can't seem to get over the clouds. It's called "The Fault in Our Stars" and when I see clouds, it kinda confuses the heck out of me. I don't know, that's just me. Still gonna buy it and will probably love it. If you like the cover John then that's all that matters. Congrats on the book!
I don't understand all the hate on the cover... I LOVE it!! Simplistic and pretty and I think it really fits the book. The cover was actually a part of what enticed me to read TFiOS, which just so happens to be my new favorite book.
.....i kind of feel like i would look at this book based on the cover because it is so simple. Everything else is so out there and covered with pictures and overwhelms you while this is so simple it stands out. And the fact that everyone says that when we read it it will make more sense also keeps me from hating it right off.
Wow... I was watching this video and you *John* mentioned the archaeology thing and my friend was all like "Now I wanna go run around Azeroth and dig up fossils and crap!" John Green you have inspired somebody to go play World of Warcraft... but it helps that we have been wanting to get back to playing for sometime now! Thank You!
One book to rule them all, one book to find them, One book to bring them all and in epicness blind them. In the land of Nerdfightaria where awesomeness lie.
I just pre-ordered a copy. My boyfriend said he'd buy it for me, but it won't be in time for Christmas. But I just pre-ordered a copy. I JUST PRE-ORDERED A COPY! *happy dance*
Where is the lucky nerdfighter who has that yettified and hanklerfished copy of the fault in our stars SHOW YOURSELF!
If only he knew then how iconic that cover would become. It's beautiful John.
I seriously love how John Green can go from talking about the sanity of a non-pizza loving person to the use of the oxford comma that I had to look up to know what it was!
and this is why he is my favorite author...
An Abundance of Katherines is so underrated.
throwback to when everyone was super disappointed with the cover reveal, and then suddenly passionately loved it

Best.
John.
Moment.
Ever.
Initially when I saw this video I was like "Eeeh, its's not the best cover."
Several months later having read the book I realize that this cover is TIMELESSLY PERFECT.
ohmygodthepuff
Nerdfighter project idea: make a t-shirt/poster/coffee mug/something collection of the phrases said in these videos that are followed by "are words that have never been said before" since they sound totally bizarre out of context (/out/ of context??)
Someone back me up, let's do this!
+
Still curious who got the Hanklerfished and Yetified copy of TFIOS
You can find some on ebay XD
You can find anything on Ebay, but I'm curious who got the authentic copy actually drawn by Hank and Sarah.
No but who got the Hanklerfished Yetified TFIOS?
I am an aspiring designer and I loved the cover from first sight, for exactly the reasons the Yeti liked it: it's bold, it's eye-catching, it's simple, it's pleasantly ambiguous. I don't think any other design would've worked as perfectly as this one. It has become an icon.
EXCUSE ME THE OXFORD COMMA SAVED OUR GRANDMOTHERS!
+PeachCreamNShit
The question isn't whether or not the oxford comma saves grandmothers, it's whether the oxford comma saves _more_ grandmothers than really good arrested development slash fiction does, which is doubtful.
No, that's the vocative comma!
xD "I'm not a doctor, but is there something wrong with you if you stop liking pizza? Yes!" :'D THAT IS AMAZING. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
The cover is awesome. It leave a lot to the imagination. With other books that have people on the cover it sorta forces a picture into your mind. Not only do I love it, I love that John is so happy about it.
I wonder if the Nerd fighter from that girls Archaeology class came back?
WHO GOT THE HANKLERFISHED AND YETIFIED COPY I NEED TO KNOW
+Max Ravenwood Odds are, someone who didn't even know those things :
I'm absolutely in love with the cover! This is the kind of book I would pick up if I walked into a shop and saw it. I think in the modern age simple designs are much more effective
Pizza will rule the world someday.
Please, don't wear that shirt again. Ever.
Why I like the shirt I think he should wear it more often
I fangirled so hard when I saw that cover through our local bookstore window while sitting in a dark & rainy parking lot waiting for my friend. It’s hard to miss. Needless to say, I ran into the bookstore & bought it immediately.
I'm not sure why so many people hated the cover, but I love it. It's simple, and simplicity is often the most beautiful (e.g. science, music...).
I wasn't sure about the cover at first, but now I love it. It's unique and recognizable, and simple enough to become a classic.
I was at a book store today and it's crazy how many YA books seem to be mimicking the TFIOS cover

I have to say, I didn't like the cover at first, but in the hours since, it has really grown on me, and now I love it.
I love the cover. It's so simple and it doesn't need to be any more.
I think the cover is brilliant! I love the contrast and think less is more. This book will definately become a classic.
I love the cover, and I have a feeling that we all will once we've read the book.
Why is everybody hating on the cover? It's simple yet bold and thought provoking. I love it, John!
John, although I was a bit shocked when the cover first came out, I thought it was interesting and was excited to read the book even more. the post Sarah made about it was perfect and solidified how trusting we should be of you, your publisher and the designer. I love the cover.
I love how the higher your signature counter gets the puff seems to follow suite!
Your excited "YES!" dance in this takes chair-dancing to a whole new level ...

Your videos will never get old, I swear
As a graphic design student, I love the cover. Rodrigo Corral does incredible design work.
After hearing the first chapter of The Fault in Our Stars, I'm very happy with this cover!
I love the cover. It definitely has the potential to become iconic.
Also if I stare at it for awhile I get really happy
I wasn't very thrilled about the cover at first but as I think I'm liking it more and more every time I see it. Can't wait to read the book.
That's where all started OMG FEEEEEEELS
So interesting development he knows how to speed solve a Rubik’s cube as of summer 2020.
From an artistic perspective, the cover fits all of the things to look for... echoing and repetitive shapes, diagonals, a variety of sizes and good contrast. Congratulations on TFiOS. It's a beautiful, tasteful cover. I can't wait to see it on my bookshelf in the 'G' section.
I love it how really good Arrested Development slash fiction makes us come out ahead as a species more than debating grammar.
John Green, I love you
I love the cover. I will feel very cool when reading it in public. Thanks for sharing xx
I think it's lovely and classic.
I first picked up Looking for Alaska because of that simple smoke cover. This is likely to have a similar effect.
I've seen every Question Tuesday about ten times, but each time they make me laugh.
0:40 this should be turned into a GIF
the puff is back! lovely!
also, TFIOS cover is simple yet amazing. i still need to read "an abundance of katherines". i'm working on it!
:)
I LIKE the book cover! It's sweet and simple! My kind of thing. :)
The fact that he mentioned Arrested Development fanfiction makes me love John Green even more.
John, I just finished reading looking for Alaska for the first time today and... WOW... Such an amazing book mate. I read paper towns which was just as brilliant, then I recommended it to my mum, who loved it also and now wants to read all of your books. Thanks for a great read mate.
This was my first ever sighting of a vlog brother it happened in a L.A. class room thank you very much Mrs.G
I bought TFIOS two weeks ago and I've already read it 17 times. I LOVE THAT BOOK!
seeing John superhyped about TFIOS makes me wanna read it again, but I am reading something else now.
book is awesome though.
The cover wasn't what I was expecting, but once I got past that I really liked it. For what it's worth.
I don't see why people are disappointed with the cover. Simple and sleek, it looks awesome. I dunno, maybe I'm the type of person who prefers simplicity over cluttered designs.

The combination or your hair and that shirt may just be the best thing ever to appear on youtube ;)
I hope I love the cover as much as you do when I finish reading TFIOS, John. Because....it doesn't have much relevance to me yet.
I loved it since it was first revealed but then I'm a bit of an art/design geek. For a book destined to become a classic, you need a cover that's destined to become iconic. Look at any classic book cover, especially published by penguin. They're masters at it.
ahhh i love the glass castle!!!
and your shirt seems incomplete without a christmas tie
love the simple covers.
I DO love the cover of TFIOS!!! Can't WAIT to read it!!!

Getting the Yetid and Hanklerfished copy of TFIOS would make my life. No joke.
I don't get why anyone would hate this cover.. It's one of my favorite book covers ever !
...Wait why the heck do people not like that cover? I actually kind of love it.
I liked the cover from the start. It's just perfect. The lightness (the innocence of their youth) is almost in the darkness (Death, afterlife) but it just doesn't touch.
I never knew people disliked the TFiOS cover. I've always loved it.
The cover is just perfect okay. It makes total sense!
just sharing my thoughts here, but i just finished reading an An Abundance of Katherines and i absolutely loved it. When I bought and read TFIOS, I had no idea who John Green and the nerdfighters were. I was attracted to the cover.
HOLY CRAP ME AND MY FRIEND JUST FOUND "SUPER SAD TRUE LOVE STORY" IN A HALF PRICE BOOKS LIKE A WEEK AGO AND YOU MENTIONED IT. I feel strangely at peace with the world.
question tuesday wednesday was already wonderful... and then suddenly Dorothy Parker. even better!
Congratulations on a great cover, John!
The cover is iconic!
I really like the cover... It's bold, it stands out... It'd quite simple but very pretty, pus eye catching which is what you want for those who read books because of the covers. I like it, good choice :)

@ethicks00 He did. The answer to the last question was "Great question Tuesday questions." Also, the time limit is four minutes.
.....i kind of feel like i would look at this book based on the cover because it is so simple.
