- This group of Slam Poets just started working together as high school students in 2012 and ended their year as state champions. Members Lillian Bornstein, Charlie Curtis-Beard, Reagan Myers and Paul Schack, make a big splash on the stage as they perform their poem "Pause".
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
Every time I watch this I get chills
I showed this video as one of many examples of slam poetry, to my 7th grade middle school language arts class. This poem made me cry in front of my students... and when they asked me why I was crying, it was the two segments 1) the cutting, because I had a friend that cut back in high school and we are now good friends as adults and 2) the possible death of the teacher at sandy hook. I got to explain to my students how it is a fear and reality that we as teachers now have to think about and I would always choose my students over myself. I remember the look in my students eyes when I explained those reasons to them. It made poetry real to them and it made this 'end of the year' made up on the fly poetry unit something I will always include and much sooner in the curriculum. Thank you and great work. I hope to see these student's poetry on youtube etc in the years to come.
Haha, I loved that the audience in the middle were giving the students high fives when they were on their way out.
