I love sunflowers. I was in Bern Switzerland years ago. The morning after I arrived ( I was at the home of a friend. ) I looked across a vast field of the giant sunflowers set against the periwinkle blue of the mountains and the cobalt blue sky. The vision was magical. There were billions of sunflower making a brilliant carpet of yellow in the intense sunlight. That week-end there was a convention of hot air balloonists hovering above the sunflower fields. The balloons radiated their colors against the sky. I felt so very blessed to have witnessed so much beauty that glorious morning! That night as I lay in bed under an eiderdown comforter and reflecting on that day the tinkle of cow bells lulled me to sleep. In fact, I fought off sleep as long as I could so that I could revel in the sensations from the day. So thank you for sharing your sunflowers with us and reminding me of one of my favorite experiences!

I love sunflowers! I went crazy and planted three packets of them. I transplanted them to the community garden and put them a long the edges. It gave the garden much needed shade in Los Angeles heatwaves. I come to realize now that I can grow them year round. For next year I will grow them in batches so I have sunflowers year round.

Every video I watch you mention the groundhog--I am so thankful I don't have a similar situation! Laura from Garden Answer had a groundhog issue and used an organic repellent. It has worked really well for her. You successively put it in larger and larger circles in your yard to drive the hogs out. I admire how you do everything with sustainability in mind, but may be worth to look in to this organic solution to save you the pain in the future.

I've been binge watching for over a month because that's how long it's been raining here. Half our state is under evacuation from flooding. I'm so over the rain. You'll know when it finally stops because I'll be out in the garden instead of living vicariously through youtube 😂💖

Your videos are lovely meditations on nature and it's singular desires and quirks. I tried to do a three sisters thing this year. However, in my local climate corn doesn't grow well so I thought to grow sunflowers and plant green beans below to twine up the sunflower's sturdy stalks. I didn't know about the allopathic nature of the sunflower and was disappointed that my green beans seemed to struggle. Now I know why. Bit by bit we learn. I'll still grow sunflowers but my green beans will have to grow elsewhere next time.

puggirl415 puggirl I planted pole beans in two batches next to sun flowers. Not all my seeds sprouted and the beans were growing slower than the others. They did eventually catch up BUT one of my sunflowers stopped blooming and died. It was no longer sturdy and when the Santa Ana winds came the top part broke off. The other sun flower is still blooming and has been a good trellis 👍

I am growing sun flowers for the first time this year. I love the idea of using sunflowers as a trellis. I just learned about this method a few weeks ago and I am trying it in my own garden. I’m a RUclips gardener too. I think I may have already messed up. My pole beans and morning glories that I planned to grow up the sunflower and growing so much faster then my sunflowers! Do you have any advice on what I should do now? I may make a trellis out of branches but I’d love to see this work out as is. Thank you for all your help. You have taught me something new. I hope we can continue to support and learn more from each other.

It really depends on your weather. If you have a short growing season with morning temperature below 50 to 60F in late May or early June and rain coming in mid to late September, you can't grow sunflower the natural way. They simply will not germinate quick enough. You need to start sunflower seeds in door a week to 10 days before planting them out. Many of them require 100 days to grow to their full potential. If you start them in door, you can guarantee a good harvest. The other problem is if you have some strong grass like fescue and Timothy in your property, they will take over the sunflower space and the sunflower seeds will either be unable to germinate or will be dominated by the grass. One way to do no til and be able to grow sunflower is to cover the ground using some cardboard to kill the grass so that you can plant sunflower in late May. The way of letting plants grow naturally may not work for all plants in all regions. I learn this lesson the hard way.

I just started growing mine for the 1st time ever and as soon as I put a few in the ground yesterday a thunderstorm happened. So now they're just limp they were still on the leaves stage and the ones I let my daughter plant with me came up out of the dirt so I had to replant the seeds today 😔😔
