  • 東京タワーは、記憶 -- A short montage of rare film footage and vintage photos of Tokyo Tower during construction from 1957-1958. Also featured are scenes from Takashi Yamazaki's award-winning 2005 motion picture "Always: Sunset on Third Street" in which the partially-erected Tokyo Tower was depicted through computer-generated imagery, or CGI.
While there are thousands of videos on RUclips devoted to Tokyo Tower, there are few devoted to the historical aspects of its construction.
Designed by renown architect Tachū Naitō, the iconic Tokyo Tower serves as a TV broadcast communications and observation tower. It was opened to the public on Dec. 23, 1958. While other towers have since surpassed Tokyo Tower's height, the structure is still the tallest self-supporting steel structure in the world -- 332.5 metres (1,091 ft), --and was the tallest artificial structure in Japan until April 2010, when the new Tokyo Sky Tree became the tallest building in Japan.
Vintage newsreel footage from NHK Broadcasting and Tokyo Broadcasting System.
Music by Naoki Sato from the original soundtrack of "Always: Sunset on Third Street" ("Always 三丁目の夕日") from Toho Co., Ltd.
I adapted this video to the 2.35:1 widescreen anamorphic format of the motion picture. The audio was enhanced in post-production with stock sound effects and ambient noise since the original newsreel footage only contained narration. Edited on MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 14 Plus with additional post on Corel VideoStudio Pro X3.

Some very brave soles working on that tower. Arriving in Japan in 1958 at the age of 4, I was totally unaware of the tower being built and cannot remember ever visiting it during the 4 years we were there. During my return years in 1965-1969 I made several visits to the tower. Always loved the sites, sounds & people of Tokyo.

Wow so beautiful, I cannot help stop crying, I first went to the tower in 1992, spent 2 hours photographing the people, it was the greatest experience to see.

It's kind of funny because I was watching this for fun when I was in 1st grade and then my mom told me to go to sleep, so then I decided to continue watching it tomorrow but then I forgot about it ever since. Now its been 5 years and I'm watching it from where I left off, (I was watching it on like a phone, but now its our computer :P)

@evananic Yes, I am well aware that the antenna was bent. According to the owner Nippon Television City Corp., the antenna is for analog television broadcasting, and the damage didn’t affect digital HDTV broadcasting.

While I watched the video sometimes it was teary-eyed about the classic construction of "Eifffel tower"-style structure in Tokyo.
The construction--due to its advanced earthquake resistance--and viewing of Tokyo Sky Tree--which was used in current DTTV signals in Japan using ISDB-T platform--was very exciting than the old ones, which was formerly used in obsolete 525-line (480i) analog TV transmission.
Expect the opening of Tokyo Sky Tree to the public on May 22 2012.

I have fond memories of going to the top in 1968, and coming back down the out side stairway, which was pretty scary! I hope there is no other damage.

Don’t you know that the top antenna of Tokyo Tower has bent due to the big shakes of the 9.0 magnitude earthquake hit in the both Districts of Tohoku and Kanto on Mar. 3, 2011?
And the restoring work by depending only on manpower is said to have been started. But as of Aug. 2, 2011, unfortunately I don’t still get the correct information whether the top of the Tower recovers original appearance of keeping perpendicularity or not.

I realize this an old video, but we were in Japan in 57-58, I rember going to Tokyo Tower on a field trip. Does anyone know what base is close to Tokyo? Unfortunately my Mom and Dad are both gone, and my two older brothers as well, being 7 I don't remember all the details of our time in Japan, I just know I loved it!! Just wish I could remember more!!

And expect that someone wished that the antenna-ladden (butterfly-type) upper pinnacle of the old Tokyo tower should be mandatorily replaced by DTTV antenna-ladden strong, long pinnacle as a backup future DTTV transmission aside from Tokyo Sky Tree.
