I remember browsing the fallout Reddit page almost a decade ago when I saw someone link the Fallout:NV YOLO run. Topic was something like “This guy is playing FO:NV on one health bar”. That’s how I found MATN and I’ve been following ever since.
Same! I think it was a Facebook gaming group for me. Such a good series.
Me too! He's in my top 3 youtubers
Both NV and FO3 YOLO were some of my first MATN videos and I was hooked ever since. It might be time for a re-watch of those. 🧐
I think I found Jon from an article of Fallout 3 kill everything, those were some good days
We all know "Ryse son of Rome" is the real nr 1 in Jon's heart
I loved that series because he explained almost everything that was wrong with that game haha
"Nipple Tassels!"
One of the funniest series on the chanel.
The open air temple in a country where it rains all the time honestly stuck with me throughout my entire Classics degree. 😂😂😂 I understood Jon completely.
@@ActuallyAcce I'm glad we both got mad at the same time that we both thought the Romans needed to get back in line haha
I remember discovering your RUclips channel back when I barely spoke English. I think I either finished or was deep enough into FO:NV to want to watch content about it. I started with some video essays and at some point I saw a recommendation "Fallout: New Vegas Kill Everything", being the edgy kid I was I instantly started binging the entire series! And since then I've been watching your content.
You have no idea how much English you taught me :) When I finally got to change my legal names I took yours as my second name - to always remember how your channel has kept me company for so many years, and how much I learnt by simply listening to one passionate Brit play video games. Thank you Jon (and Claire, and Tabby, and Ted
A blind man could’ve seen #1 coming.
Right? We all knew it was going to be XIII Remastered.
having not seen it yet, im guessing Rome: total war.
edit: number three. genuine surprise.
Gotta agree. New Vegas and Fallout 3 brought me to your channel with the YOLO and Kill Everything runs you did back in the day. It was recognition of someone with the same attachment to these wonderful games I always had that got me hooked on your content to begin with.
Obviously I stayed for the ongoing egg carton baking nightmare storyline.
absolutely the same! Jon just rocks and i'd probably be happy listening to him reading the menu from pizza hut...luckily we get gaming stuff instead.🙂🙂🙂
Found it by accident but it's been a good ride
16:25 Julianius Vatinius is pleased.
No 7. FTL. A functionally perfect game.
High, and well deserved, praise.
I'd say Portal is also perfect.
Jon: "I need some time for the Skies of Arcadia series."
Also Jon: "I'll make four video essays with footage from fifty games!"
12. Resident Evil 4 0:20
11. Civ 6 2:20
10. Elden Ring 4:00
9. Roller-coaster Tycoon 5:45
8. Fallout 3 6:35
7. FTL 8:45
6. Skyrim 9:50
5. Pokemon, vaguely second generation 11:05
4. Skies of Arcadia 12:55
3. Total War Rome 15:05
2. Mass Effect 17:05
1. Microsoft Excel 19:45
jk 1. FNV 19:45
Rome Total War*
What does FTL stand for? 🤔 thanks for the time stamps

Is it funny that for a second I actually thought that Excel was somehow gonna be in first place? lol
Everything you say about Mass Effect 1 is correct. It's the best introduction to a new universe, and its first mission: from the character creator, Udina and Anderson discussing Shepard's background, the little stroll around the ship before the Eden Prime,to the introduction to Saren... is as PERFECT a first mission as there will ever be. But the game rarely lets up from there, and the ending is the most blood pumping, I can't wait for a sequel satisfying ending ever. They would never recapture this, for as much as ME 2 was "improved", it lost just as many things.
I genuinely feel 2 is the weakest entry in the franchise and is saved purely by A) Mordin Solus, and B) people being really invested in the plot reveals in the last 20% of the game and their contribution to the overall canon. 3 has the exact opposite problem, where it's phenomenal right up until the bloody end. And if Andromeda had come out before 3, people would have loved it. It's a perfectly enjoyable game. It just wasn't grand enough and original enough to stand alone after the epic trilogy that the originals were.
Idk. I love ME1 but I still think ME2 is the best of the series. I just liked the whole vibe of it more.
@@malachibiffle7418 Well, different people want different things from games, you can't say people only like it for so and so reasons, because you're not them. We can argue till we're blue in the face, but at the end of the day I think ME2 is the best game in the franchise for my own reasons.
I loved how everything was interconnected. I love the elevators, the airlock. Hearing the intercom lady saying who had the con. Also the economy was a lot more interesting as you were always looking for better weapons
Always felt that ME1 was an action RPG, and ME2 was an ACTION rpg, if you get my drift. They almost felt like two different genres at times. Not a fan of game studios making everything 'streamlined and slick' at the expense of pretty much everything else but ME2 hadn't gone that far down the rabbit hole at the time.
Jon managed to tear himself away from the Fallout show long enough to post this! Huzzah!
Yeah but this Sims 2 is really getting very interesting
Jon i cannot let the crime of calling Red "Ash Ketchum" go
IKR respect to the Red boi!
This is worse than calling Link Zelda. Physical assault on Pokemon fans
Worse, he called him Ash Ketchup as far as I heard.
@@farshnuke He most certainly did, and it made me spit out my tea!
As one Jon to another, I'm glad we both agree on #1
SKIES OF ARCADIA IS COMING!!!! I’ve never seen any Skies of Arcadia anything, but ever since the poll a while back I’ve been so excited for it. Jon videos about games he loves are some of the best videos, I can’t wait!
I remember finding this channel through the no-kill and kill everything runs, still go back to watch them sometimes, really unique take on a game I already loved. And then you just kept making great videos.
I am so happy to hear Skies of Arcadia is finally coming to the channel! I have been looking forward to seeing it since the polls you ran!
I know nothing about it apart from what Jon said in this video, so I'm very much looking forward to watching him play it
@@HarryDuBois616All I'll say is that we are in for a good time with this series.
Same, I could not be happier!
What a game! If I still had a Gamecube I'd play it again. Same for Eternal Darkness.
Me too, I have been waiting almost a decade to see him play it. I love how he plays games and it will be so exciting to see someone who loves it just as much as I do play it.
This was a really special series - it was wholesome to hear Jon talk so openly about the things he's enjoyed and the impact they've had on him personally! The comments about Rome TW reminded me how many great features that game had which I had forgotten... hopefully they reappear one day.
Thank you for sharing this list Jon. Your passion for the games you play is what I've always loved about MATN, and it's been wonderful to hear your thoughts. Brought back some very fond memories of many of these games. Can't wait for Skies of Arcadia next week!
Jon would have named Pippa Funnel in this list but he feared its power too much
Pippa Funnel killed his entire PC. I fear even saying the name here is putting us both in danger.
@@shotgunshells2 It's why he will never make a worst games list. He'd feel compelled to gather footage and then bye bye computer. (It's also not Jon's style)
This has been a lovely mini-Series. I remember I started watching you nearly ten years ago. I watched both the Fallout Kill everything runs and the no kill new vegas run and I was hooked. I was there when YOLO first started. While most people watch sitcoms with their dinner, I watch a MATN video usually. Thank you for ten years of content Jon and I'm super excited to see Skies of Aracida :)
The no kill run was so mind blowing to me; all the details that Jon showed in the videos!
And the kill everything vids are so funny, Jon's role playing at its best
When Jon started talking about trying and failing to make a series on Skies of Arcadia 10 years ago, I knew exactly where the conversation was going. And I've never been more excited. This has been a long time coming, and hearing Jon lovingly talk about this game multiple times on the PodCats and how he would love to make a series on it but never could, just warms my heart that it's finally time. See you then, I cannot wait :)
tbf he also said Skies of Arcadia was going to be the next series at the end of the Starfield Finale video.
@@Th1sUsernameIsNotTaken Ah, was not watching Starfield, so this caught me as a very pleasant surprise :)
@@StarClan4evr Fair. I had to go back and click to the end because here it sounded like the actual announcement, so thought I was crazy for a minute lol.
Bu- wh- Jon! You forgot about The Outer Wilds!!
i was genuinely looking forward to him talking about it. Not sure how it slipped by him
Isn't it Outer Wilds and THE Outer Worlds though?
His streams of it were really rough, and probably soured him on it. Jon's stream chat is terrible with backseating and bad quips, and it completely ruined the experience.
@@fadmanloki660 Yeah that is very true. It was a big part about why he did Subnautica as a series and not a livestream. And yet it still made his #1 game of the year in 2019
I didn't think it'd make it, because chat helped him so much he never really got to solve it himself and that's half the joy.
I'm surprised there wasn't TW:Warhammer 2, Cities Skylines, RDR2, X-COM, Rimworld, Terraria, Stardew Valley...
I’m surprised cyberpunk wasn’t there it’s literally just fallout plus mass effect but with even better lore.
There was a 96% chance that xcom was gonna be on this list.
John: releases top 50 list without xcom on it
"That's xcom baby"
Always love how your top lists are so personal
Rome Total War being in the Top 3 is all I needed from this. Well done sir
what led me here, oh so many years ago, was actually your kill everything and pacifist runs of new vegas. i saw it in a random article online and was like, oh, cool. and i've never left. may not have watched ever series or anything, but i've certainly seen the majority of your content at this point, and some of them i just go back and watch because they're just so good. the first cities skylines videos come to mind as something i just watch every once in a while. thanks for all of the videos over the years jon.
I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this little mini series! Not just my favorite RUclips channel, but one of my favorite forms of entertainment in all media. Keep doing what you're doing!
This must be one of the most passionate lists I've seen! Thanks for the list!
I'd be interested to hear where Jon would place Baldur's Gate 3 in his list of favorite games of all time.
It's a great list you've made here Jon! Can't wait for the Skies of Arcadia playthrough.
I really enjoyed this series, Jon! I would love to hear your top 50-100 games, top 10 games released before the year 2000, a battle to the death of all your picks from MATN Best Game of the Year Awards, etc. It's just great to listen to your thoughts and experiences and emotions around games and to feel my own nostalgia for games that I love too when they come up.
I'm confused on something, where's outerwilds? You put it as your game of the year in 2019, so I figured it would be on the list somewhere, but I didn't see it in any of the parts.
Did I miss it?
New Vegas was the game that introduced me to your channel!! Love the joy you express while playing the game!
Happy to see Elden Ring so high on the list
pokemon crystal was the first video game I ever played through all the way, and to this day the company has me in a chokehold. It was the first game that I ever got to play as a girl in, and as a child that meant a lot to me. I was so happy to see it here, and I live in hope that one day a real crystal reboot/re-release is going to come out. HeartGold and SoulSilver were all well and good, but nothing beats Crystal for me.
Thank you for the series, I really enjoyed learning about what you consider to be the best games of all time!
I voted for Skies of Arcadia in the last yearly poll, and I look forward to seeing the game that you've talked of so fondly over the years!
Thanks for sharing your list Jon
Great watch, thanks for this as I now have quite a few new games I want to play.
I don't know if you've ever tried a Yakuza game but they are just so unique and wonderful and... well you go through every emotion when playing, confused, happy, sad, confused, hysterical laughter, confused, floods of tears and playing one of the most badass guy in gaming. Some of the greatest world building in gaming and insane variety of perfectly executed mini games and sims. The main story is normally quite serious and action packed and the side missions are a crazy eclectic never boring wonder. The world is brimming with variety and content.
Yakuza 0 give it a try if you haven't already because if you like it its such a fantastic series to get into
Loved this mini-series, it was a great reminder of all the games you've introduced me to! My favourite Fallout game will always be Fallout 4, as your Nuka World series was how I found your channel. I'll forgive you for not including Bloodborne, one of my personal favourites, as you haven't played it (yet?). Would love to see you give it a go, even if it's stuck on the PS4/5. Thanks Jon!

Jon- love your series here. I wish you'd have played Medal of Honor Allied Assault back in the day...now that is a game that has strangely had staying power with clans and MP to this day, which is crazy to contemplate being over 20 years old now.
I starting suspect that Jon never played VtM Bloodlines
No Diablo 2, Final Fantasy VII, Secret of Mana nor Chrono Trigger - I suggest you give those a chance
I still regularly listen to your YOLO series' to fall asleep to. Easily my most watched series on RUclips.
New Vegas Wins, and the shock can be felt from No one.
What can I say? Those previous video's made me a long time fan, so I guess in a way both Fallout 3 and NV are my personal #1's as well. Good list, and can't wait for Sky's of Arcadia.
Yep. I love your Fallout content, but it was through Worms election coverage that I discovered your channel. Those videos were very funny! Do one this year?
I already love skies of Arcadia, I never finished it because as a kid I didn’t have time, but I’m even more hyped than I was for this upcoming matn play through after watching this
I'm hype for Skies. I know how much Jon likes it so I'm glad he gets to add it to the channel.
Skies of Arcadia shoutout! Hell yeah!!!
So happy for Skies of Arcadia. Pirate's Wrath!!!!
Great list, well deserved top ranking ones. I would like to think before your eyes would be on the top 75.
One thing I loved about the original Mass Effect is they built into lore that weapons (ostensibly) have unlimited ammo bc the tech had advanced so that the metal slug being chipped away at would take a very long time to expend thus in gameplay terms meant infinite ammo (with a cooldown). This spoke to the balance of RPG and Shooter (and idk just think it was a fun concept) but they dropped that with the sequel bc gamers love reloading or something.
As someone who usually plays a sniper, the limited ammo in ME2 was really frustrating. I accepted the instant overheat in ME1 willingly.
@@reliantncc1864 You want your character to be adept (heh) at certain thing? What is this some sort of RPG?
It was just a much more fun way of doing things...
Lore wise, you still weren't firing "ammo" as we have it today. You were still firing the same little metal shavings, but, you had a swappable heatsink. What I don't understand is why they didn't have some sort of bandolier that would rapidly cool the heatsinks for re-use. Giving you time to "reload" but giving you an almost infininte ammo pool that you could exhaust if firing enough rounds quickly enough. They explain it in-game. The geth calculated that more rounds fired = more win. Waiting for cooldowns = fewer rounds fired = you lose.
@@rawhide_kobayashi We don't know how long the heatsinks take to cool. They might even get too dangerously hot to store them in a bandolier.
Or the heatsinks might even eject hot material in order to get rid of the heat, as is stated to be the case for ships.
@@HelFrostKara Sounds like you and I agree.
Wonderful stuff, Jon. Excited for the new series!
Wow John, I can't believe you chose Duke Nukem Forever as your favorite game of all time! You truly have the most based opinions on this Site!
YES so excited for the new series, despite having never heard of it outside of this channel - you've done a great job selling it lol
I fully agree with your Mass Effect opinion.
Really enjoyed this mini series jon!
I wonder if Control, one of my top ten games, would have been on this list if Jon played more of it. Maybe we should tell him it has a panopticon, and there is a part of the game where you just do office work.
You warmed my heart with Rome Total War as high as it was. That game was my beginning to gaming for so many years. Love you Jon. And yes I will be trying Fallout soon
Was gonna argue with you Jon about Mass Effect vs Mass Effect 2, but then I realized you’re right. I actually tried MS2 before MS1, and I really didn’t like it at first. It wasn’t until years later that I grabbed MS1 on a sale and played that through entirely, did I go into MS2 once more and have an absolute blast. Mass Effect 1 had to walk so Mass Effect 2 could run.
I'm so happy to see Skies of Arcadia so high up on the list. Behind SaGa Frontier 1&2 and possibly Final Fantasy 8 it's my 3rd or 4th favorite game of all time. I also like that you praised it's soundtrack. Armada battle and Uninhabited isle are probably my two most played tracks for our D&D nights. I'm really looking forward to the series, I've been waiting for it since democracy week. Please do an episode talking about the mace hand for Drachma in the Valua sewers.
17:16
I'VE HAD MY EYE ON THIS ONE FOR A WHILE
Jon is goated. Not even for New Vegas being #1, but for even having Skies of Arcadia in the lineup, and SO HIGH UP too! Mad, mad, mad respect Jon.
Hearing Jon's opinion about Civ 6 makes me so happy. There is SO much civ 6 hate on the internet, as well as in my personal friend group, and I love it for all the things you said in this video.
I am so happy Skies of Arcadia is on Jon's list too, and super excited for this series!!!
I found MATN scrolling through YT looking for different F:NV walkthroughs in 2016. I’ve been subbed since then.
Thanks for the great work!
oh woooo finally a skies of arcadia series!!
I knew when this series started what was going to be number 1. And it warms my tum tum with joy
Jon, is that Elden Ring character one you're currently playing or one you specially made for this video?
It boggles my mind how Fallout 3 has such a bad press, it absolutely deserves to be on a best games of all time list, where New Vegas would only be a maybe for me. Personally I never encountered a problem with the ending because I didn't want the game to end, so just kept exploring and enjoying the thing
Everyone knew it would be FONV but it never gets old, and deserves the spot, so yay! 😊
Please make a massive video on Fallout: New Vegas and everything ot does well. I loved your huge retrospectives on 3 and 4, and I'd love see one for NV too
Mass effect 1 is by far the best of the franchise, surprised more dont see that.
The way you can tell that Mass Effect was a triumph is that everyone still loves it despite its inventory UI.
I love your absolute passion for New Vegas
17:30 When you were saying about Rome total war and how the first installment is always the best.. I was thinking of Game of Thrones, but also overwhelmingly of Mass Effect 1. The gameplay is a bit improved in 2, but the story telling and the grand ending of 1 is unbeatable.
New Vegas is also my #1 game ever. It even beat Chrono Trigger for me, which is a perfect game. New Vegas is simply in a class of its own.
Skies of Arcadia play though?!?!?!
I've been hyped for this for so so long
I've never played it myself, your joy of the game just radiates profusely
I can't wait :3
Jon loves Starcraft and Rome: Total War, i always wonder why he doesn't seem to like Age of Empires. You'd think it'd be right up his alley.
Jon, after listening to your opinions on Mass Effect (which I for one wholeheartedly agree with, BTW), if you haven't read Seamus Young's ME retrospective (googling should bring it right up), you really, really should. It's a frankly alarmingly deep dive into the trilogy and why ME1 was so important and did so much that the following two games shamelessly exploited and let go to waste. (While still acknowledging the gameplay changes that were largely if not always entirely for the better). One of the best internet reads out there, imo.
Jon, I really hope that you will play Morrowind at some point. That is my favorite game of all time, and I would love to see you experience it like you did with Oblivion. I also loved a lot of games on your list, and there were a lot that I never spent any time with, but I still talk about Morrowind like you talk about FNV, which is an absolute masterpiece. Thanks for the list! Some really great nostalgia here for me.
Anyone else notice the RCT2 ride named The Quest for Ivarstead?
Did not expect to see Elden Ring here. The cool thing about all Souls games - once you got the idea of these games, you can go back and replay the rest and have a lot of fun. For many it was Blood orne, for me Ds3, and for you Jon I think it very well may be ER. Try the previous games now, I'm sure you'll get a much better experience
Amazed Outer Wilds didn't even make the top 50!
I think the fact he played it on stream with *loads* of backseating from chat sort of ruined the experience for him somewhat
@@tite93 I didn't realise he played it on stream....oof. That's probably the worst possible game to play while streaming. Shame he didn't get to experience it on his own
I remember watching New Vegas YOLO in 2015. I'm still watching all these years later, christ its almost 10 years ago!
I am really enjoying your videos
Always enjoyed your Fallout content. I still play Neopets, Toontown and Master of Orion.
Star Control date 0066!!
This series is just a long setup to show how deep and true Jon’s love for Star Control 2 is. He may not know it yet, but all his favorite games are little babies, quaking in the shadow of his true favorite game, Star Control 2.
So I again, humbly request that Jon play his true favorite game, Star Control 2.
Tyvm and gb
How there's never been a "Fallout New Vegas is as good as you think" video essay is beyond me.
It's time.
I cannot tell you how excited i am to finally get to experience Skies of Arcadia through this channel. I've been having it hyped up from pretty much everyone i know whose gaming opinion i agree with, and i've never had a chance to play it.
Disappointed to hear that Kotor 2 wasn't the next one up, but honestly growing up with Skies of Arcadia, I can't even pretend that I'm disappointed for that. Very excited to follow the next series!
KOTOR 2 will come. But tbf, Skies of Arcadia waited much longer.
Jon, are you considering playing the Elden Ring dlc after it launches in late June? It was a blast watching you play the base game, even when you missed Sellen for what was it the 1st 40 levels 😂
So, 4 hour essay "We all know Fallout NV is fantastic and here's why" when? Legit asking, I love your essays
If you haven't watched it already, Jon's Fallout NV J Sawyer Mod series is a massive coverage and love letter to New Vegas and goes over a lot of what is great about the game.
@@ActuallyAcce oh cool, I'll look into it! But wouldn't we all love a DEEPLY researched and scripted essay too?
@scarletlightning565 oh definitely!
The backlog will have to do until then, though.
YES! I knew I wasn't the only person who liked the Mako!
Can't wait for next week.
Thank you, I’ve always wanted ME1 to be my favourite in the series and your definition finally makes me see that ME1 is the best and therefore my favourite
Rome Total War is in my top 3 too. I would not remotely be surprised if I had over 10,000 hours in it, if you also include the first Europa Barbarorum mod. I think if RTW had RTW2's map and graphics, it would be my perfect game. The mechanics Creative Assembly introduce, and then never feature again, are just heartbreaking; and they have never made a comparable game since.
Jon and I are very similar, as far as being goofball nerds who share Classics education. Besides having 80% commonality in favorite games, we seem to share the same values and sense of humor. So even with series I hate, I can't help but watch because it's a good time. I also value that for many people it's a safe space. I am 39 years old, and until 3 years ago, I never watched any video content of any sort on the internet. But I just love this channel, and I wish I wasn't dirt poor, so that I could show appreciation in a way that's helpful.
Only difference in favorite games is that I stopped playing consoles by the year 2000 or so. So mine would include more older PC games. No One Lives Forever, C&C Red Alert, Dune 2, Star Control 2, MechWarrior 4. I hope Jon can survive off this channel for a long time to come, because I am so jealous that he gets paid to do what I desperately struggle to find the free time to do for fun.
May Tord Headripper keep you and yours safe.
I found your channel from your New Vegas playthroughs 😊
Feeling more and more like we need a Origin story of MATN.. there have been too many of "I played this game, and it changed my life and this channel" Need a compilation of those!
Sad Jon didn’t give RDR2 a chance. I mean an entire playthru would have made for massive spoilers but I feel like he dismissed it way too quickly. I absolutely did not expect it to be on this list but then I also didn’t expect RDR to be either which makes the fact he virtually informed RDR2 that much more tragic.
I love the fated hand that gently pushed you towards bargain bin Fallout 3, that bin changed your life, gotta love it! Also Fallout 3 is easily my fave, so agree with your positioning above F4 👊😎
