Native New Yorker in my 50’s here and have lived in both Manhattan and Brooklyn. 1. Williamsburg is cool, but if you go out in the city at night you will not want to walk alone from the train station to some of those apartments you viewed after 11:00 or so and then you get into paying for cabs. 2. Someone below said you might get used to the train noise and I disagree. It is a constantly running subway and not like a commuter train you might hear in the country. The constant noise is bad for your health even if you adjust to it superficially. 3. You said you feel drained. The amount of walking and activity you did is typical for busy, working, social 20-30 somethings. The pace, noise, energy will be exactly that if you live there full time, but since you work for yourself you can nest at home anytime you want and rejuvenate yourself that way. Also, you definitely should take trips out of the city. Upstate is glorious and offers many things for you to experience and document. You will also be shorter flights to Europe and the Caribbean and can travel there extensively. If you want to do NYC do it for 6 months or a year. Take a slightly cheaper apartment with pedestrian traffic at night so you feel safe walking from subways or in the neighborhood after dark and plan travel into your NYC experience. Good luck with all your decision making!

You’ve said for years you’d be interested in moving to NYC at some point, but now that you actually could, it sounds like you’re kinda talking yourself out of it at every turn. The vast majority of people, especially at your age, couldn’t even think about affording living there. I can’t really tell if you’re hesitant because it’s not your dream anymore, or because you’re scared to go out of your comfort zone. Yes it’s expensive, but given the budgets you’ve mentioned, can definitely afford it. If the housing market gets better in the next year or so, it’s very possible you’d be wanting to buy a house then. Which means this really could be your last chance where you don’t have a mortgage and could do this. Up to you entirely, but my advice is that if your hesitancy comes from just not wanting to live there and experience NYC anymore, stay in Cali. If it comes from being scared to get out of your comfort zone, or spending more than you have in the past despite realistically being able to afford it, then do it. You’ll become a better person from it and I’d be willing to bet your content would thrive with a big change like that (similar to how your views went up when you had Reno content from your Airbnb). Good luck making the decision!

I just had a random idea for your main youtube channel. There are people (like me) who have never been to a big city like NYC and would have no idea how to navigate it. A "how to get around NYC" would probably be a popular video.

NYC is very small --- easy to navigate!!!!! I don't recommend using the subway ----- there are endless buses, taxis and tour buses - and walking. Asking people who work in hotels or locals - is a good way to find the best restaurants, retail shops, places to visit. You could also check out vlogs and Yelp.

I just moved back to LA after living in NYC for 2 years, I decided I'm happier living in CA long term but am SO glad I made the move to NYC just to try. I learned so much about myself and other people too, living in a melting pot of cultures and stories. I hope you make the move if your heart is telling you! Yes it's expensive but truly worth every penny for the life experience you'll gain, you will have the time of your LIFE! You can always come back to the west coast too 😉

When I was planning my move from CA to Dallas, my best friend was kind enough to make me a spreadsheet beforehand of all the tours lined up. Then after the tour, we would put in our initial thoughts that were still fresh in our heads, what the complex was near, how far the nearest target or TJ’s was, amenities, price, etc. It was so helpful she did that along the way for me, because by the end I was so overwhelmed and couldn’t remember!! Highly suggest doing this for anyone looking to move to an unfamiliar spot.

They say it takes 6 months to become a New Yorker but in your case, it'll probably take three!. Living in Manhattan for 5 years for me was amazing. It's a gift that keeps on giving. As someone on this thread said, I'd stay away from apartments with train noise or living too close to a hospital. 😁

Hey! I lived in NYC in a luxury high rise in downtown brooklyn. Looked very similar to all the places you looked at, as far as amenity wise. I NEVER used any of the amenities lol. So don't let that sell you. The only thing I loved about my place was it was right near a traders. So I would focus more on proximity to things and less on the fanciness of it.

Hello, Native New Yorker here! Curious, have you looked at places that are further uptown in Manhattan like Hells Kitchen, Upper East Side, and my home the upper west side. it seems you always stay downtown there is a lot to do uptown with great restaurants, parks, cafes, ect. You get a real neighborhood vibe up here. Also with BK while farther in I have to say the neighborhoods are beautiful Boreum Hill, Cobble Hill, Pak Slope, Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn Heights ect. There are so many great neighborhoods do not limit yourself to just downtown or Williamsburg. Just a thought from a native....

You’ve mentioned a few times about preferring Manhattan, and at some point if you really want to live there you just have to deal with the fact that it can be really expensive. If you can afford it, I say go for it because in life we go through phases, and maybe this is the time. 😊

Cannot speak to living in LA, but I have lived in NYC in my twenties much like yourself, and have relocated from Florida to Asheville, NC more recently.
I think your friends are right. Get the cheaper place, live for a year there and travel to be with family and Sam. Let Sam buy the land for the future and have a place in a sane city like Greenville, SC. It's got great performance results and has come a long way for work from home, creators and bigger industries even though it's surrounded by SC. You can always travel to Savannah and Charleston and Raleigh plus it's a great east coast hub area if you are ok with the higher taxes, still less than LA.

As a former New Yorker in my 20s, I would go for Manhattan proper and not Brooklyn. The allure of New York is being able to walk out your front door and feel immersed in the city. Brooklyn is okay, but it’s just not the same. The commute is a pain when you’re trying to get all the way up to Central Park or UES or Upper West Side. I would look for a pre-war walk up (no elevator), because that’s going to be a little less expensive than the newer buildings with all the amenities, but you can still get great light in those and have the full NYC experience. Good luck! :)

Shelby!! You know in your heart what the right decision is for you, once you choose everything else will fall into place. Don't worry so much about the what if's, I think you should go for it. You've got this!!! I just went through the exact same thing last year and I am SO happy I chose to move to a new city. I spent 4 months trying to make the "best" decision by constantly weighing all of the pro's and con's when really, there is no way of truly knowing how each option is going to work out until you try it! Choose the option that excites you, you'll figure out the rest

If you want the full NYC experience I would likely go with Manhattan. There is more street traffic, it is more walkable and easy to get ferries, UBERS, etc. I like Williamsburg but some of the streets can be a bit unsafe at night. Fine if you take an UBER though. NYC is a lot of fun (I was born here and have lived in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens)… Wishing you all the best in your decision!

New York apartments are like sports stars. Are they really worth all that money? No, at least not to me. I spent 2 years looking at the Manhattan skyline while working in East Rutherford, NJ. It's a great region...but is it worth the "hype and money"? No. Thanks for sharing the search journey! I'm sure it will work out and you'll have those memories of living in NYC...like that 90's song, Everybody's Free to Wear Sunscreen. LOL.

lolll not to dox myself, but you're right outside my building (like lit right in front of it) when you were against the tree (around 4 mins)!! The area is GREAT, I've lived in Williamsburg specifically for five years, and in this apartment for four of those years. It's so close to the Bedford area where Whole Foods + shopping is, as well as the water and parks, while being removed enough that it feels so peaceful. Sooooo many amazing restaurants and so convenient to Manhattan. I work in Midtown and it takes me 25 minutes to get there door to door.

I think a great view of Manhattan in the background will really enhance your videos so an East river facing apartment in Brooklyn/Queens or a Hudson view condo in Hoboken/Jersey City are great options. I know the last two locations are technically not part of NYC but Central Park/Times Square and all the other iconic NYC attractions are just a short ferry or subway ride away also I'm assuming you get more bang for your buck in NJ while still enjoying the benefits of NYC?

As a former NYer I think the experience of living there is amazing but it comes with some major sticker shock... I love NY but the rent has gotten crazy since I lived there 7 years ago. Wondering how a relationship could ever work long term if neither party is willing to compromise on where they live for the good of the relationship. Not really our business, but just wondering if Sam factors into any of your long terms moving plans or not.

Also seriously can’t stress enough how you’d gain another subscriber on your main channel and a consistent viewer again. I haven’t watched your content over there and unsubbed a while back because it kept feeling very samey. Moving to NYC would open up SO much more new content that a lot of people enjoy watching. Moving vlogs, decorating vlogs (can be a different style than what you always do in Cali, also would make more sense to do seasonal decor because there’s distinct seasons in NY), going to new places, videos with new people and NYC content creators. There’s just so much opportunity that if you played your cards right, you could easily make the extra money back in new viewers and sponsors that you’d spend there, and more.

You already know what life's like in LA, but in NYC you don't. Since you are still so curious about nyc, i feel you should try it. You can always go back to LA. Regarding the NYC cost of living, I think the vlogs might get higher views with NYC content since its such a cool city. That might even out the cost. If it does not go like that, or if you don't like living there, you can always move to LA.

I stayed in an apartment on king street and I loved it. It was a liiiitle scary past 11pm ish. But there was so much stuff happening nearby and plenty of fun places to walk to. I was there for my 21st birthday though, so the 21 year old me was in a much different place than you are in your life, currently hahaha.

I would aim for Park Slope or Queens. New York in general smells like ancient urine. I would save My money and move to the sticks but I'm no genius. You can get a 3 bedroom house in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee for 1700 a month... if You were already planning to spend 3 large a month on an apartment, You can rebudget the extra 1300 per month into Bucket List Vacations, Jet Skis or even just cool snacks.

Hey Shelby, my offer still stands. I can show you great places here in Manhattan with great views to Central Park. I was paying 12k a month rent for my apt. The landlord tried to increase the rent so after 2 years I decided to get my own. I have now my own little 1 bedroom on a corner of T tower. Paid 1.4m, the only issue is that people with small places like me we are not allowed to use the main entrance to the building but instead I have to use a next door small Starbucks-like entrance. But hey, at least I m not paying rent anymore. Bring your bf with you, anytime. I would love to met you both.🎉

I feel like you'd get used to the train noise. It might be kinda comforting, and being so close at least it's quick to catch

New York seems to have high prices and cramped apartments that are a little dark, clostrophobic? Los Angeles will be a better fit for you Shelby, much love ✌️❤️🇬🇧

You dropped this during the iPhone event, but gives me something to watch on my day off! Go buy a new iPhone and Friday some awesome new features you will use a lot!! Some of those views were stunning and probably increase the cost... Maybe you should just do some long term rentals, keep your stuff in storage... Good Luck!

It’s actually more annoying living in UES and then trying to take the subway downtown to the west side of lower Manhattan haha because you have to transfer and change trains and the travel time versus living in Brooklyn and taking the subway to lower manhattan

Since you want to be able to travel without guilt, I personally feel that you should get a space in LA as your home base!

Williamsburg is dangerous at night - it is really is a "slumming it neighborhood" Guys have no problem living there and communting at night but not good for women. You may want to try Yorkville area on the upper east side. Or even the Upperwest side.
