      It depends on the model if it’s self priming it will start like that, but quite a few models will have air trapped in the impeller well if you fill it first and they won’t prime. Also depending on the placement of the canister filter if there’s not enough height and you fill it first, it also won’t prime.

    Great video. We’ve got a broken canister filter and have just bought a new one to run in parallel. The original is now leaking at pace, any suggestions how to get around this? We’re thinking of putting the old media in the new filter, but wasn’t sure if the new media would need to be discarded then as it had been used for a short while and I’m guessing won’t keep after being wet?
    Do you think it’s better to just leave the media alone now then new one is working fine - they only ran in parallel for 12 hours

    • @paulstingray
      @paulstingray  11 месяцев назад +1

      You can add the old media in the new canister but if the old canister has been off for longer than six or so hours the nitrifying bacteria will probably already be dead. If so just wash the old media out. As for leaking it will be the rubber O ring around the canister as they will deteriorate with age. Definitely try replacing that first.

    • @paulstingray

      Ideally you want it below the Aquarium so the water can siphon into the canister filter to start it. If you can somehow fill the canister up and get it going then you can have it set up level with the Aquarium but it will work a lot better below when it’s filled by gravity from the Aquarium..

    • @paulstingray

      There’s a few ways you can do that.
      A few canisters have an extra tap that you can pump water out of, but if there’s only an in in and out you can just connect a longer hose to the out and pump the water out through the filter as most just have a simple connection in line that you can join another hose to . Easy easy

      @LettuceWrapMe it should be quite
      It might be the impeller not sitting right. Try taking it apart and check for anything on the magnetic part. Otherwise it could be air bubbles in the media

      You can start it by syphoning water into the canister. Easy way is to start it like a gravel syphon or you can use a submersible pump in the tank to start it.

      Hey there!
      It depends what size canister filter you use with the volume of the tank. But the colder the water the more dissolved oxygen it can hold. So unless the canister is way undersized it should be fine with a chilled tank.

    Good afternoon sir. I'm getting ready to start a 120 gallon freshwater cichlid tank. I really would like to use an external type filter, however I've had a few people telling me to install it through the glass. Is there any advantages going through the glass as opposed to over the back or side? Thank you for your time and your knowledge

    • @paulstingray
      @paulstingray  Год назад +2

      They might be talking about a sump. ( tank under the main tank used as filtration) you need a hole drilled for most sumps but definitely not for a canister filter.
      Canister filters are designed to be used on tanks without the need for holes drilled.

      So you saying after charcoal is done 6-8 weeks. You get rid of it and don't replace with charcoal but put more ceramic beads instead?

    • @paulstingray
      @paulstingray  9 месяцев назад

      @user-ks9bi9gd6y you can use carbon if you want but we mainly use carbon to remove medication out of the water if you ever use any diet based medication etc. so adding more ceramic media or sponges is an easier option long-term.

    Is there anyway to make these work when it’s on the same level as the tank?

    • @paulstingray
      @paulstingray  Год назад +2

      It’s not easy on most models. Main issue is filling it with water so it will start properly. Some canisters have a pump on the intake pipe, they would be the ones to go for in that setup.

      I put a garden hose in the entrance, and wait untill water comes out on the other side, that makes everything filled.

      My answer was a bit short. But I first fill the cannister with aquarium water, then place the cannister and attach the tubes. Then I put the hose on one side until the water comes out on the other. @@paulstingrayGardening

      You can siphon water into the canister filter by vacuuming air out of the other side, or you can stick a pump and hose in through one size of the canister filter until it’s filled up in the water is coming out the other side.
