How big a tank should i think canister and not a standard pump? Love the ink btw brother
Howdy!
You can use a canister on any size tank
There’s even super small canisters for 10ltr tanks
@@paulstingray Ahh cool , I will deffo need a canister filter type for the cold water 250 litre for the goldfish in spring, How do you get the cool jain colour on your ink?
Love videos like this that just explain what you want straight and direct without someone talking about themselves for 6 minutes before even explaining what you are looking for, clear and direct thanks man.
Thanks, ask away if you’ve got any questions!
I’ve been avoiding making the switch from hobs to canisters because everyone makes them seem SO complicated. I’ve been at it for 3 ish years and this is the first video that really was just pure information and so straightforward. I’m buying a canister setup today. My frogs deserve it🥰
Update you didn’t ask for- went with the Sicce Whale 200, seems sufficient for a 55🥰 petco has 20% off AND $20 off if you pick up in store so OBVIOUSLY I went this route 😂 will get another for the other 55.
Tldr- thanks for simplifying this enough to make me feel confident with what to expect
It’s 700lph so should be more than enough. But it also depends on tank setup, type of frogs, current bio load etc.
congrats, it should make the tank slot more stable 🎉🎉
If RUclips had an award show " and the winner is"one that would be a lot longer than the world would stay awake for but in your case you would be giving your acceptance speach for best video on setting up a canister filter 🎙️🎬

SO glad I checked this video out I didn't even realize the spray bar can or should go below the waterline. Cheers mate!
If you use it above the water it will give more oxygen to the Aquarium by breaking the water surface, but if you use CO2 it will also remove the CO2.
@@paulstingray Ah that makes sense! I'm using one in the setup and preparation of my tank for an axolotl though not sure it will give the right flow needed for them. Love your work mate.
@deseer1564 they don’t like a lot of flow so as long as the tank has a good turnover it should be fine. Check out one of my newer axolotl tank setups.
@@paulstingray Yeah I have watched your axo setup which ended up being the lovely crab at least ten times haha. Good to know though thanks.

You explained that really well. I wish I had a tank big enough to warrant a canister because they are so neat but I'd feel silly putting one on a 20 gallon. lol

@@paulstingrayhello New to the canister filtration instead of HOB Can you tell me what brand you are using for this video? Thanks so much !!!!
@destryl1076 howdy
The white canister is “orca” brand it is Chinese made but one of the better quality Chinese made filters. I’ve used and sold them for a roundabout 15 years. I’ve hardly any issues with this brand. There are quite a few filters that look the same but of less quality so just be cautious when you look around for one.
Thank you thank you thank you! I have been assuming how these work and now it’s confirmed

Thank you so much for this tutorial, I’ve brought myself a new aquarium and slowly setting it up, and landscaping it ready for my other fish to enjoy there new home.

Our pond is 600 litres out side what size filter would we need
Canister filters are better suited for aquariums inside. But there are lots of different pond filters. Filter size depends on what you are stocking in the pond as well as where it’s situated.

Great video thank you

Would you need an air stone or a surface skimmer or even both with this external filter in an 112 litre tropical tank. Am just about to set up my first tank and am super confused. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
It depends on what size canister filter you get/ have. And what the tank is set up for. If it’s 800/1000LPH It will be more than enough on its own for most commonly kept species .
Fantastic video ive been using a Hob but am finally making the switch to cannister as ive just inherited some gouramis and bristle nose catfish. Ive got a 130L freshwater tank would i still need an airstone if i get a decent cannister?
A decent canister will be more than enough without an air stone.
When your bristlenose breed you might need an extra internal filter to help pick up the mess though 😂😂
They breed super well if you have both sexes
I have smaller tank im going to make a nano saltwater tank 15-20gallon. Are you saying to use charcoal filter for 6-8 weeks then get rid of it and replace it with more ceramic beads instead?
It depends if you just want to replace it with carbon or not. If you replace it with something else that doesn’t need to be changed continuously obviously you can take longer between canister filter cleans.
Glad I found this video! Thanks for the info. I just scored an old 33gal long and am thinking about using a canister for it.. any idea of what size I would need for it?
Howdy
What were you going to keep I there?
Very useful, I would like to know if filling the canister first, has the same result?
It depends on the model if it’s self priming it will start like that, but quite a few models will have air trapped in the impeller well if you fill it first and they won’t prime. Also depending on the placement of the canister filter if there’s not enough height and you fill it first, it also won’t prime.
Thank you 💪🏾

Hi there this video was super helpful. I have a 120cm x44cm x66cm tank roughly about 353 litres of water so what size canister filter can I use
What re you going to keep in it?
@@paulstingray well not sure yet just thinking of filtration I might keep alot of schooling fish not sure yet and maybe some horseface loaches just not sure how many can go in there
@danielkemp345 I’d say go something around 1500lph you can always reduce the flow but that will circulate the tank quite well and filtrate it.
@@paulstingray thanks so much
I just bought this filter today and you explained the setup that well I didn’t have to read the instructions.
I would like to add Stainless Steel Lily Pipes to it - what would you recommend.
I’m using Dalua and Dymax stainless steel Lily pipes. But most brands should work fine.
Great vid! I'm doing some research and I'm considering upgrading my tank to a canister filter. I was just wondering how you disconnect it for routine maintenance?
Depending on the brand most have a quick release that separates the in and outtake from the main canister. So the pipes stay in place.
Great video. We’ve got a broken canister filter and have just bought a new one to run in parallel. The original is now leaking at pace, any suggestions how to get around this? We’re thinking of putting the old media in the new filter, but wasn’t sure if the new media would need to be discarded then as it had been used for a short while and I’m guessing won’t keep after being wet?
Do you think it’s better to just leave the media alone now then new one is working fine - they only ran in parallel for 12 hours
You can add the old media in the new canister but if the old canister has been off for longer than six or so hours the nitrifying bacteria will probably already be dead. If so just wash the old media out. As for leaking it will be the rubber O ring around the canister as they will deteriorate with age. Definitely try replacing that first.
Great video, what size canister would you recommend for a 50L tank? I’m trying to save room and hide filter. Thanks
It depends what you are going to keep in the tank but anything from 400-800LPH would work as you can adjust the flow on most. I use used an oase biomaster 250 thermo on a 70lt tank for example and it’s rated for ultimate 250 lt tanks
Thank you @@paulstingray , I was wondering if 400LPh was overkill. So a 250 should be fine. 2 apistograma and 5 tetras, possibly add a bristle nose at some stage. Thanks for your time
@ShaneO-nm2hh 400lph will be fine
Check out the oase video I uploaded yesterday and you can see the flow rate
@@paulstingray thank you
Thanks for that!
🎉🎉🎉🎉
That looks like a good filter, just fill it Seachem matrix and poly fill and it would be perfect 👍
I’m currently mucking round with the far-Infared media
See how that goes 🦵🏾🦵🏾
I don't mind those orca canister filters I have 2 running now. But I do like bio balls because they dont clog like ceramic media and dead bacteria wash of them easier allowing new bacteria to grow.
I’ll have to find a link when I get time that shows how ceramic is better than plastic bio balls and the reasons why.
Hi, so I got a smaller canister with only 2 trays. Should I put my sponges, from coarse to fine, all in the bottom tray and put the biomedia on the top tray? Any instructions?
Sponges in the first tray ( the one the water goes in first) then bio media in the second. Google what brand you have as some have water go from top to bottom and some bottom to top. But you want the water go though the sponges first.
@@paulstingraythanks!
No problem
Just ask if you have any questions
I have a problem with air bobbles coming in the intake pipe. i don't know where it's sucking air. How i can fix it ?
Check all the joins in the tubing. Because of the pressure they can suck in air. If the joins are ok check the O ring. If the O ring is ok then it might be air trapped In the media. Is it an old or new filter?
@paulstingray it's new, and i triple checked everything it sucking air just above the beginning of the tube that takes water to the canister, and i tightened very well it's not stopping from taking air i used teflon tape above the o ring just to making sure the o ring isn't leaking
I just got the same filter for my turtles,do I have to prewashe the filters before to start the filter?
Yuppers
Pre wash the media to get any dust out of it and double check the media isn’t in plastic bags.
Thank you so much, your video was very helpful to me,,
No prob! Thanks for watching!
Hi. Thanks
Can an external canister be LEVEL with the aquarium?
I can put it below but it's easier for me to have it level on the same shelf.
I've always had them underneath before. 🇬🇧
Ideally you want it below the Aquarium so the water can siphon into the canister filter to start it. If you can somehow fill the canister up and get it going then you can have it set up level with the Aquarium but it will work a lot better below when it’s filled by gravity from the Aquarium..
I have a 20 gallons tank...can you recommend me a good canister filter?
Oase Filtosmart is a great choice
Hello! Looking to use a canister filter for my 40 gallon breeder tank. Wondering if there is an easy way to use the filter to drain the tank. Ideally using a 10 foot tube out the window. (I have turtles and this would make my life unbelievably easier).
Is this a silly question? Would I be better off just getting a simple water pump unrelated to the filter? Thank you!
There’s a few ways you can do that.
A few canisters have an extra tap that you can pump water out of, but if there’s only an in in and out you can just connect a longer hose to the out and pump the water out through the filter as most just have a simple connection in line that you can join another hose to . Easy easy
@@paulstingraythankyou for the quick response I appreciate it!!

Hi! I just got a 23-gallon tank and have been searching for filters. Is a canister the way to go with such a small tank, or should I get something else?
Howdy!
There are quite a few different brands of canisters that would suit a tank that size.
The great thing about canisters is most of the filtration stays outside the tank so there’s more room for aquacaping
thank you!

@LettuceWrapMe any questions just ask
@@paulstingray So I got a 200L per hour canister filter for my tank, which seems to keep the water clean. But it makes this slightly irritating pump and squeaking sound every few seconds. Does it have to do with the filter I bought or should all canisters should stay relatively quiet? Got the "bioscape tropic canister filter" from my local pet store.
@LettuceWrapMe it should be quite
It might be the impeller not sitting right. Try taking it apart and check for anything on the magnetic part. Otherwise it could be air bubbles in the media
what's the best canister filter for a 55gallon tank?
It depends where you live but “oase” is a really good brand if you can get it local
Thank you a bunch
🎉🎉
My prime bit is far too stiff to move up and down. What do I do?
You can start it by syphoning water into the canister. Easy way is to start it like a gravel syphon or you can use a submersible pump in the tank to start it.
Can I have both in and out next to eachother? (Same end of the tank)
You can, just point the “out” away from the “in”

Hey Paul, thank you for the awesome video. Can I ask if you still need aeration when using the canister filters (hooked up to a chiller for axolotls)? Thanks mate.
Hey there!
It depends what size canister filter you use with the volume of the tank. But the colder the water the more dissolved oxygen it can hold. So unless the canister is way undersized it should be fine with a chilled tank.
fantastic training i bought 1 any difficulty i will get ur help pls help me

Can I use a canister filter for my 65 litre tank?
Sure can
Thanks 👍🏾 what size and type of canister filter would you recommend?
Good afternoon sir. I'm getting ready to start a 120 gallon freshwater cichlid tank. I really would like to use an external type filter, however I've had a few people telling me to install it through the glass. Is there any advantages going through the glass as opposed to over the back or side? Thank you for your time and your knowledge
They might be talking about a sump. ( tank under the main tank used as filtration) you need a hole drilled for most sumps but definitely not for a canister filter.
Canister filters are designed to be used on tanks without the need for holes drilled.
After watching this, ive had my spray bar set up wrong, ive got it above the water as opposed to below the water, always wondered why ive got so many micro bubbles🤔
You can set it up above the water, but yup you will get a lot of bubbles and noise
So you saying after charcoal is done 6-8 weeks. You get rid of it and don't replace with charcoal but put more ceramic beads instead?
@user-ks9bi9gd6y you can use carbon if you want but we mainly use carbon to remove medication out of the water if you ever use any diet based medication etc. so adding more ceramic media or sponges is an easier option long-term.
Is there anyway to make these work when it’s on the same level as the tank?
It’s not easy on most models. Main issue is filling it with water so it will start properly. Some canisters have a pump on the intake pipe, they would be the ones to go for in that setup.
I put a garden hose in the entrance, and wait untill water comes out on the other side, that makes everything filled.
That can work but will kill the good bacteria @@Gusishh
My answer was a bit short. But I first fill the cannister with aquarium water, then place the cannister and attach the tubes. Then I put the hose on one side until the water comes out on the other. @@paulstingrayGardening
Can you adjust the flow rate on a canister filter?
Is that tube green/gray or light gray?
Grey
Good video, needs more canisters lol 😂🐠🐠
Lol hopefully it’s easy to follow
Mine doesnt have a pump how do i start it 😭
You can siphon water into the canister filter by vacuuming air out of the other side, or you can stick a pump and hose in through one size of the canister filter until it’s filled up in the water is coming out the other side.
@@paulstingray ok ill try that tomorrow
where's the water pump, shouldn't it be in the water ??
