Maiden is a metal legend. Loved this band since my teens. I'm 53 now and I will rock this band loudly throughout my home or when I'm driving to this day.😈😇
@Sean Brennan Agreed!I've seen them many times over the years but the Powerslave tour was their best in my opinion. Can still teach the youngsters a thing or two lol.
🤘
Used to go to sleep listening to Piece of Mind album. Still can't get enough!!!
I'm 54, I don't listen to iron maiden OFTEN, but when I do, so do my neighbors!! 😂😂😂
Live after death 84 Bruce Dickinson says to the crowd this band isn't about selling products like selling jeans selling some fucking pimple cream This band is about music. Yeah OK this band sells more merchandise Than any band I know
You forgot to mention Steve Harris, absolute beast on the bass
I did but I think I cut it out accidently in the edit from what people are saying! 😅
Well I'll say it! No Steve No Maiden!! One of the best Bass in the world. Getty Lee Steve Harris Billy Sheehan
@@wingsofpegasus Yeah Steve Harris is really a fantastic bass player 😀👍 A hero to those of us who play bass! Really there would be no Iron Maiden without Steve Harris.. 👍😀
@@kirkscobey3031 I agree! No Steve Harris.. No Iron Maiden.. 👍
Steve Harris was Iron Maiden. He not only anchored the band with bass playing that was second to none but he wrote all the classics. Great vid but Steve Harris was and still is Iron Maiden. UP THE IRONS!!!!
I don't give a damn what anybody says, I'll be 60 this month in the 80s were the most fun times to be alive. Of course there was danger in excess if you wish to find it, but those of us who kept their heads really enjoyed the collaboration of some of the older groups the transformed into 80's bands that went on to be great. It was almost seamless to go from something like the old 70s rock to the new 80s metal and progressive rock. It was a great time for music. Glad you keep it alive Fil! RAWK! 🤘✌
The 70s and 80s were a great time to grow up in. And I have many fond memories of the concerts I went to. BÖC and the Outlaws. The Clash, Joan Jett and the Rolling Stones. Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne and Iron Maiden at Monsters of Rock. And many more! Good times!
@@shawnadams1965 Absolutely!
Yes! Ron James Dio was proof of the 70's seamlessly to the 80's!
@@monicajean37 As was Ozzie! And Rush! And Pink Floyd and a solo Roger Waters. And BB King NEVER got old! Yeah, it was a great day! Peace! ✌🤘😎
Happy early 60th BD, John. Tear it up!! I turned 60 in '17, the day after Gregg Allman died. Really didn't want to celebrate. i share mine with John Fogerty, T Bone Walker and Jerry Douglas. '80s were some of the best times of my life. Started out playing in a band that gigged then mid way focused on family and work.. those were good times.
The best thing about Iron Maiden is that Dave Murray and Adrian Smith have very different and complementary styles...Dave's legato playing is incredible and Adrian has a killer ear for melodic playing (in the vein of Glenn Tipton of Judas Priest). And having three amazing songwriters in Bruce, Steve, and Adrian doesn't hurt, either!
Same with Brad Gillis and Jeff Watson in Night Ranger. Very very different styles.
Same with Judas Priest.
Great comment. Very insightful.
Saw that as well. Even stage wise together, two complete different entities, but nailed it. That's a hard working band
Even though he's not as a great player as the other two Janick Gers is probably the best songwriter in the band only second to Harris. He wrote some of the best songs in modern Maiden like Paschendale, The Talisman, Book of Souls, etc.
Iron Maiden has always been one of my favorite bands, I saw them a few times. They draw you in with all the amazing energy, you can't help getting involved by singing along. Excellent video and analysis!
Again fil does it again. Explaining rock and roll in layman’s terms again. Such a pleasure to watch his videos.
I was there December 18 1983. Westfallenhallen, Dortmund Germany.
Actually Fil, there was a band that had 2 lead guitarists that harmonized together that inspired bands like Iron Maiden and countless others.
That band?
Thin Lizzy
Excellent video Fil! I always enjoy your honest analysis.
Cheers amigo.
They crossed my mind as well!
Don't forget about Wishbone Ash, too. They were a big influence on Maiden.
Yeah the song emerald from Thin Lizzy! Those twin guitars! 😀👍
yeah and nobody has ever heard of Lynyrd Skynyrd
@@FishTheJim NOW, I LOVE LYNYRD SKYNYRD!
The song that got me into maiden back in 1983, radio 1 Friday rock show.
Up The Irons!!! Anything Maiden rocks! \m/
My husband has been a Maiden fan for over 30 years (We are both 58). Our den is covered in Iron Maiden framed posters and albums. I've seen them 10 times since 2010. We went to 2 concerts in Florida on our honeymoon in 2011! We have tickets for this September in Houston, Texas. UP THE IRONS!!
Cool!
I saw Maiden live in 1981 as a 15 year old kid. What a kick ass show! I’ll never forget it!
Cool!
80's metal lives and thrives in San Antonio Texas. It never even wavered. I've never missed a Maiden show since 2004 or so. Maiden were the first concert I took my son to, and I've already got my tickets for Sept. 25th.
Hell YEAH!!! MAIDEN!!! I went to their July 1985 World Slavery Tour Irvine Meadows, Ca and Seventh Tour of the Seventh Tour at Irvine Meadows, Ca. #MAIDEN4EVER🤘😁🎶🎶🎸🎶🎶
I think I also saw maiden in 85, did they open for Dio? I forget, my concert going years are a little foggy 😉
I had tickets to the ‘85 Slavery Tour over here in New Zealand but the bloody Australian wharfies went on strike so the Maiden lads couldn’t play. Gutted, as it would have been their first gig in NZ. C’est la vie!
Can’t wait until August! Seeing them in Chicago and Indy!
The Farmer's Life Crap! they're going to be in Indianapolis?? I'm only 5 hours from there, I'm going to try like heck to make it to that show, won't be many opportunities left to see them.
tol get August 24.
The Farmer's Life 🤘 Last time I seen them, I was 15. Somewhere in Time 87...its time to see the again.
I love the base work. You can clearly hear it over everything. Very nice
.....bass....lol
Check out pete way of UFO ,, where Steve stole his style and pants LOL
First and still best live band I ever saw, Irvine, Ca. 7/5/85.
That would have been The World Slavery Tour! Possibly the greatest, and longest tour, ever undertaken! Up The Irons 🤟🏼
Iron Maiden is my favorite band and you just made me like them even more. Great analysis!
These men are so uniquely amazing. You know what you're getting from them, live or recorded. It's great to see that they still enjoy performing together and haven't lost that crazy energy level that it takes to deliver for the fans.
This is the time I went to see them in San Antonio Texas twice. Wow
Another great video. They put on some show. I’m 57 and have been listening to rock from 1972 and still crank it up!
One of my favorites.....used to crank it on my pioneer system in my old 1980 camero and cruise great memories......rock on brother😎
Duane Atkinson how did you get a record player in your car. My uncle once told me that some records were as big a a pizza box if not bigger. Or was your car a van?
@@thomasskeffington4539 I had cassette lol
Reminds me of my first proper band, that lasted for 11 years: not in the level of perfection that Maiden produce, but for the balls-to-the-walls going-for-it bulling the music through, no matter what, getting our sound, and HAVING A GOOD TIME! DOING IT I loved it, and the rhythm guitarist is a lifelong friend of mine, because he was really shy, but he is still amazed that I got him on stage hundreds of times. As lead guitarist and lead vocalist and songwriter, I was expected to do everything, but the guys did support me and pay tribute with the holy booze, so I didn't mind.
The ex-rhythm guitarist, let's call him Tom, recently sent me a practice tape (yes, a Compact Cassette) recorded about eighteen months before our biggest ever gig, at the Bridge in West Ahston (no longer there, but it had to be over a thousand people). The gig was astounding, amazing... the only period of my life in which I kept a diary was when I was in that band, and that is just exclamation marks (afterwards, we got very drunk, because the landlord had offered us free beds in rooms he hadn't sold that night, so we didn't need to drive that night, whereupon we scarfed all the good-will drinks people had bought us). The acoustics in the practice room (paid for, but still pretty crap) were shite. I was yelling at the top of my voice, I had distortion on distortion, and I hadn't then discovered noise gates... a mess, perhaps? But when I put on headphones and listened, I truly thought, "I would really pay to go and see that band". Tom agrees.
Maiden are just a teensy bit older than me. So if they can still do it, why can't I? I would almost give a kidney to rock in front of a big crowd again. Nothing beats it that you can do in public. Nothing. The nearest thing I get now is young people being a little stunned by me at karaoke proffering me the latest bizarre fist-bump ritual and laughing when I don't know it because I'm a dinosaur. Oh, if only they knew...
Thank you for featuring Iron Maiden, you really nailed the reasons why they have been so successful and why we love their sound. Please do another review of them, maybe explaining the different guitar styles of Murray and Smith. You do a great job at explaining to us non-musicians what we are hearing and why we like it. Thanks !
Iron Maiden was my first concert experience (piece of Mind Tour). Fastway opened for them, Maiden was incredible and I listen to them to this day, especially when I want to push myself during a workout. I have also turned my fifteen year old son onto them.
Respect for your holistic review of IM. Good job. I will check all your other IM videos. I hope there are some more.
I kick myself for missing the Somewhere on Tour tour in the mid 80s. My only excuse is I was broke. I finally saw them years later on tour with Rob Halford and Queensryche.
The fun part of having two leads is trying to figure out which one is playing. Once you get a feel for their respective styles, you could tell just by ear.
Peter Hineinlegen Join the club...they were on my groups list too..we were flippin' burgers etc (those that had a job) broke indeed...same thing with AC/DC at that time...😐
I needed that , on this Friday night
I remember this concert very well .. it was broadcast "live" from a show here in my country called "Night-Rock" .. outside of Iron Maiden ... played Judas Priest
Def Leppard
Ozzy Ozbourne
Quiet Riot
Krokus
MSG
all on the same night !! best rock / metal night ever... 🤘 🤘
Those striped pants made MY eyes water...great, great analysis.Never thought you'd like this. Long live The Maiden.
FOUND IT. (The perfect one to share on FB w my musician friends). Genius critique Fil.
Thanks!
I Saw Maiden and Priest (Number of the beast/screaming for vengence!!) tours in New Haven Ct back in the ether fantastic concert .Thanks for the episode.Keep on keeping on Fil.
Them wer tha dayz. :) Ahhh so long ago. I was 14.
Thank you for your analysis!
I saw them open for Judas Priest - "Screaming for Vengeance" tour ('82 or '83). Such an awesome show! We owe a lot to Michael Schenker for the Metal that we enjoyed back in the day (and now). I think he started it all. There was a great show almost every week back then. It was a great time to be a kid.
Absolutely insane ! Love it! The guitars are on fire! 🎸🔥 Wow! And the voice ; so distinct!!! I’m out breath just watching them run around the stage ! Great analysis once again! funny you mentioned the leggings! I noticed them too! 👍🏻
The Powerslave Tour was fantastic! All these years later and I will be seeing them this August in Buffalo for the 6th time. My metal side is Maiden, Priest, Dio and Ozzy.
Powerslave came out in Sept. 1984 this was the Piece of Mind Tour.
Thomas Grant I am well aware that this is Piece Of Mind Tour. I certainly am not wrong for sharing my experiences that started with The World Slavery Tour. Sorry for your confusion of what was initially written.
Stefn U here: One of my long time favorites. From watching your videos, I am gaining a new appreciation for critical listening, as well as enjoyment listening.
I saw them in the summer of 80, Paul Di'Anno was their lead singer.
Did see Samson that summer, as well as Judas Priest, AC/DC and Saxon. Bruce was with Samson.
I was fortunate to have grown up with several great venues within a 100 mile radius from my hometown, including one just across the river in the city of Springfield, Massachusetts. Plus, parents who encouraged me to go to concerts, especially since I earned my own ticket and bus ride money.
Another excellent review, Fil 👍🏻
Iron Maiden and Judas Priest before them set the bar for metal bands in the 80s! Great review man! Thanks for sharing!!🤘🏻🎸🎼😎
Yeah, I remember when Iron Maiden debuted.
My friends and I were already Priest fans, and we noted the similarity immediately with the twin guitars, and Paul Diano's screams - though they certainly weren't up to Halford's.
Despite those similarities, Iron Maiden didn't sound anything like Priest, which was very cool.
Priest rules in my humble opinion
One of your best and probably my favorite video you've ever done Fil! I love this one. :D
Thanks!
omg i feel so old 5 years later i started listen to them huge fan since then Up the Irons
Another note that is often missed -- whenever both guitars solo in the same song, they're always in different keys. Smart. It avoids "sameness." And of course, Steve Harris' bass is so much a part of the sound. Once they added the third guitar, the sound and feel was never the same.
Janik really was never needed in the band.
Iron Maiden was one of the fist bands I saw in concert - back on their Killers tour - opening for UFO. They were awesome and still continue to be on my rotation list. Always love the Trooper. Great commentary Fil! And congrats on breaking 50,000 subscribers! That is HUGE!
Thanks Dave!
Amazing energy by Bruce and the boys. Coming at you like a locomotive similar to a Ramones concert.
I'm very surprised that you didn't mention bass player Stevie "Chopper" Harris, who was the primary songwriter and founder of Iron Maiden. His bass playing was unbelievable considering that he played primarily with just two fingers of his right hand, and apart from his musicality, his sheer stamina and energy were simply incredible. I don't know any other bass player with such strength and stamina.
seanandben don't you mean "bomber" Harris? After the South African in charge of bomber command during ww2?
I agree. Harris is amazing on this track. That driving bass is very distinctive and it really pushes this song forward.
live after death is still my all time fav live album when it comes to emotions these days
Maiden and Priest are the soundtrack of my teen years. Both amazing bands with iconic frontmen and virtuoso guitarists. What a time to be alive and love music!
Iron Maiden ** Rules **
Great Video!
You are A true Talent with no Ego.
Yup! You nailed it, as per usual. They are so good live and I can't wait to see them again in July when they come back to the ATL! \m/ \m/
One of the best metal bands ever! I have had the pleasure of seeing them 3 times, twice for the tour Number of the beast, and few can put on a more energetic show than them. Thank you Fil. Long live heavy metal!!
Holy smokes!!!!. Heavy Metal will never die!. Thanks for this reminder!.
I agree.Steve Harris is amazing.Especially 1983.One of my favorite bands and band members in 1983.Dave Murray, always smiling and what a fantastic guitarist
Thanks for your comments, I could put my signature below all you said. Adding the best base of Steve and 3rd lead guitar by Janick, makes music of IM even more heavy. Appreciated you mentioned precisness of each member, their passion for life shows after decades did not change. Listening to IM since my 13, now at 44, I am happy and positevelly surprised by many young fans on their life concerts, knowing each word of songs...that is the best award to IM and great job the band do for ages. Maiden up !
In the the mid eighties, when I was about 16, a guy I new couldn't use his ticket to see Iron Maiden because he had to work. They were his favorite band. I bought his ticket and went. That guy became was my husband 5 years later. He still brings it up, not because of the romantic story, but that he missed that show-lol.
Great iron maiden breakdown
Great analysis and rundown on Iron Maiden! always enjoy your analysis there so informative. keep up the professional work as long as you can. thanks Fil.
Me and a buddy use to do Maiden covers. He wasn't a lead player so I always had to do both leads. I had to switch my style back and forth. This helped me so much in being a versatile guitar player. Up The Irons \,,/
The Trooper is one of my favorite Iron Maiden songs. It just rocks!
I remember seeing them live in 82 and 83 I was 19...it was phenomenal...no band is better live up the irons!
Nice one Fil. Thank you
Hat's off if you saw Iron Maiden during the "Piece of Mind" tour.. I was a senior in high school back in 1983.. The show was at the Lakeland Civic Center, Lakeland FL.. Opening act was Quiet Riot..
Good analysis. The best part of this song is the bass is not lost in the mix with all those guitars.
Great memories here!! One thing I always admired about Maiden is that they would always have a super popular opening act (quiet riot, twisted sister...) and before the shows I would know guys who would say “ I’m leaving after the opener”. I would always tell them to stick around. They would always, always show up at school the next day in a Maiden shirt. One of the few bands who were just as good live, if not better. Good times..... good times.
Yes!One of my favorite bands. All top notch musicians..Of course my favs Dave and Steve.xoxo Seen them many times met them several times.Thank you Fil.Im sorry im not completly watching you this time.Im creeping on maiden right now.haha
Here in States, I was lucky enough to catch them twice on this tour. Both times they opened for the Scorpions for the Blackout Tour. I saw them in Washington and later that same year in Louisiana. The show was everything that you'd expect it to be. Ahh, the 80's. Good times, those were.
Cool!
One thing also. Adrian and Dave both have very distinct guitar tones. Adrian's guitar is always much more distorted than Dave's. Dave always has a "clean" sound. The differences in tones is what makes such a unique sound when they harmonize together, and, it also is easy to tell when listening to Maiden who is playing each solo.
I hit that thumbs up as soon as I read the title! Seen them in 87 Somewhere in Time, your.
ALL HAIL MAIDEN
Cool!
I've seen them in 1980 for there first venue in Paris as guest band for Kiss ! How they kicked my ass ! Steve showed me the way ! Well ! don't forget Steve "The Boss" Harris with his bass who run everywhere on the stage , on the neck , to the drum-kit and probably To the Hills ! Thanx boy ! Keep on rockin' !
Saw them a few times in the 80s, first time on The Somewhere on Tour at the Hammersmith Odeon and a few times in the seventh son Tour...fantastic band , let’s not forget Steve Harris’s galloping bass playing...great band.
About time! I love me some Iron Maiden!🤟🤟🤟
Live After Death was a great live show. Steve Harris is why I bought a Bass. I'd play along with the double CD from start to finish trying to copy by ear. I'm mainly a guitar player but Steve is the reason I like Iron Maiden. Nicko is the 2nd reason.
Many British bands formed the Invasion. IM defined the blitzkrieg! When they get going it's like a chainsaw on full speed. Their concerts are as great as ever and I can't wait to see them again. They truly represent the absolute best R&R has ever produced. Even the old folks lose their minds at their shows.
I was 16. Piece of Mind showed up and that was that. I loved Maiden before it but this was the album that solidified it. Still my favorite album to this day. Not one dud on it. Up the Irons!
MAIDEN! So many good memories with this band providing the soundtrack. Okay, some pretty freaky memories, too. One thing, though, Fil, almost everybody was super appearance-conscious back then. People wore their look like a uniform, showing what culture they identified with. Your analysis of the band is spot on, capturing the essence of early metal. Great, as always, Fil, thanks!
Kings of the NWOBHM ! Saw this tour when they stormed San Diego with Saxon and Fastway. 🤘🍻
I saw it in LA. I think it was in 1984. Bruce was so young!
@@beachgirl4583 so were we !🤜🤛😁
Love Maiden but Priest are the kings!
@@sean7735 I've seen Priest alot more than I have Maiden but I'll have to disagree with you on this one 🍻🤘
@@dontmakemelaugh01 No problem bro...Maiden has better crowds but in my opinion Priest has way better music over the years
Thanks for the review. Always wondered what that distinct guitar sound was and now I know. The two lead guitars are great just amazed they can keep in time together. The drummer is not too bad either.
The first time I saw this top band was 21st May 1983 and still listen to them now!
I always loved the way Adrian and Dave would so seamlessly swap roles. And with Steve and Clive providing that rock-steady beat, it just pulls the whole song along. I love Nicko as a drummer,, and he is a fit for Maiden, and probably I would totally like him as a mate if we met at a party (not likely!), but Clive Burr was an astounding metal drummer.
the bass,the bass,the bass.
Yeah I accidentally edited out Steve's mention annoyingly!
Great reaction!
Iron Maiden is a Machine!
They are great live!!
I'm not a guitarist, but you can just hear the talent bleeding out of their songs!!!
Yes, this band is prolific in many ways. Got to see them with Twisted Sister and later with Guns and Roses. I had enough "Eddy" shirts to fill a thrift shop warehouse to the rafters. They have so much talent, energy and an extraordinary work ethic. Might I say, Bruce with all his talents and hobbies is a true renaissance man. Thanks for another great review, Fil.
Dave Murray, most underrated guitarist EVER!!!!
IS ANYONE THAT FAST ON BASS? MY LORD HOW IN GOD'S NAME COULD HE DO THAT MORE THAN ONCE A WEEK? AMAZING!!!!
More Iron Maiden please !
Hey Fil BillyJ south of Pittsburgh... been awhile brother sorry.. this band I’ve seen in the 70 s got tickets to the show this year... testament to how good the music and their live shows
Wow, you really know your music ! Great video.
Iron maiden is one of if not my fav bands of all time, and great review but I must say...HOW CAN YOU NOT EVEN MENTION STEVE HARRIS!!!!!!!!!!! are you freakin kidding me, he is the backbone and soul of Maiden, his bass playing is just as important and unique as Dave and Adrian! That gallop, that treble and the running around the stage at full speed jumping over the monitors......come on!!!!!!
I mentioned Steve as the founding member ☺
I saw them 2 years ago about 25 feet from the stage. Great performers. Dave Murray is the happiest man in metal smiling from ear to ear from the first song to the last.
I remember them having that checkered floor when I saw them in the US in September '83.
We went to that gig was super duper
I was at that show. Dortmund 1983.
Wicked Fil so excited I saw Iron Maiden in the 80's in Ottawa, wicked concert my friend and I were right up by the stage looking closely at what Adrian Smith and Dave Murray were doing on guitars. Steve Harris can take your breath away by his crazy bass though. Bruce Dickinson's range on his voice, insane and to back it all up Nicko McBrain is a rock on the drums. It was the Number of The Beast Tour. We had on our studded belts, wrist and arm bands. All our metal look man and top it off with crazy long hair. Where did those days go? LOL
Steve Harris is one of my heroes, when I was learning bass 'Trooper' and 'Where Eagles Dare' were some of the first songs I learned. Bruce and Nicko are amongst my favorite madmen too.
Also rocking the guitar body style that would later become more associated with Dimebag.
so weird because back then, a lot of guitarist played Deans
oh wow dimebag? fucking loser

My first time hearing Iron Maiden was in 1978/79, and I was blown away by their sound. I started playing guitar in early 1980, though by 85, I gave it up due to getting married. I started playing again in 2012 after a divorce lol..freedom. I listened to maiden and tons of other bands over the year, learned a lot about technique and the relationship of each instrument within the music. One thing I never really paid attention to was the bass. To listen to Steve Harris playing and then see him playing..he was amazing at keeping that bottom end so tight and his pace was insane..song after song, night after night, that plucking hand had to be exhausted. He opened my eyes and ears to how a bass really fills in the music and can work with the drummer on setting the pace, rhythm and the over all feeling of the music. Still don’t play bass lol.
Saw Maiden in Oct 84’ Powerslave tour, Twisted Sister and Girls School opened up, my senior year in high school🤘🏻.......yes I’m middle aged too☹️
