    The history of the Teutonic Order on the Baltic coasts wasn't just a series of battles and constant war. There was a highly developed civilian life in the order state. Too many aspects of that period are completely missing in this documentation. It's actually another repetition of the favourite British way to interpret German history.

    Trakai castle was, together with Vilnius castle, built in brick on the orders of Keystutis and his son, Vitautas the Great, as a key fortress. They had the bricks imported from Polish ruled Gdansk. He was a first cousin to King Jagiello of Poland and his battlefield commander at the battle of Grunwald in 1410 CE. The present day Trakai castle is, much like Malbork castle, a post WW2 reconstruction.

    Also, so far as I know, a precursor to the "Nordic crusade", was the fact that Baltic pirates were raiding Swedish shores. Jarl Birger, and his clan - Folkungarna, would not take it, would protect the people of the very very new nation of Svitjod, that would evolve to the nation of Sweden over time, they were very much involved in the Nordic crusade, and so far working with the Teutonic Order, or as we say Den Tyska Ordern

    Its no exageration that the Baltic Crusades had a strong protocolonial aspect as they where heavily interlaced with the german colonization of the eastern baltic shore. The settlements for colonists already had a standized project even. More than any weapon, the stone castle was the most important in bringing the region under german catholic dominance.

      As Dr. Nicolle has put well, many of the current historical clashes and grievances in Eastern Europe have at their origins the Baltic Crusades.

  • @danalasmane6191
    @danalasmane6191 Год назад +10

    Even though as a Latvian, so a direct descendant of the last pagans of Europe, I feel a little triggered by the mention of Teutonic knights, this seemed to be a relatively objective take on this often neglected chapter of history when compared to the crusades to the Middle East. Except for the several repetitions of 'wilderness' - compared to big Western, South European civilisations, yes, there was no centre, like, say Rome, but we were never conquered by the Romans, so we never had those Roman-founded urban centres that were transformed into medieval strongholds after the collapse of the Roman empire. Neverthless, there were plenty of smaller and bigger tribal or ethnical areas with well-developed centres (sadly, wooden). So 'wilderness' might be a touch too strong.
    It is very sad though that our civilisations keep repeating the same mistakes - instead of being united when facing a greater danger and maybe changing the course of history, we just keep squabbling amongst ourselves and surrender the things our ancestors died for, well, without an actual fight (looking at the state of Europe at the end of 2023)...

    The creators of this video should at least google some facts before presenting them as truth. Trakai castle in Lithuania was built by lithuanians, not the teutonic knights. The construction of the stone castle was begun in the 14th century by Lithuanian Duke Kęstutis, and around 1409 major works were completed by his son Vytautas the Great. So it is nonsense that it was administrative center of the Order as it is told here

      Operation Barbarbossa in 1941 was the first offensive against the USSR and it started WW2, breaking their non aggression pact. they named it after Frederick Barbarossa, who was a holy Roman emperor and crusader who died in Turkey on his way to Palestine. they wanted to complete the work of Barbarossa. many that live in the area think that Barbarossa is even still sleeping in a mountain and when he wakes up he will take back the Baltic, Germany, Galacia, the holy Land... back to the Germans. I'm not making any of this up. you can go visit the mountain to this day.
