Rather than entertain the author's attempt at distancing themselves from their love, you build the emotion steadily to the point where the writer acknowledges the emptiness of life without their partner. Thus, rather than have the piece sound reflective in tone, the reader gives the piece a more emotional, perhaps more sincere tone which invites the *listener* to reflect on the piece. This change in tone makes the audience a party to the writer's inner thoughts, as opposed to a mere listener. I definitely got much more out of this piece hearing it read like this than if I had read it silently.
