Edgar Allan Poe's poetry speaks of loss, love, loneliness, and the darker aspects of life. Alone by Edgar Allan Poe is one of Poe's most well-known poems. It is a classic and dark poem that will make you cry. Most people can relate to this poem, as we often feel alone and struggle to fit in. Edgar Allan Poe was no exception. Poe lived a troubled life woven with loss. The classic line - and all I loved I loved alone - profoundly illuminates his mental pain. Enjoy the work by one of America's most prolific and iconic poets.
"Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we are still alive"❤️🔥
Shite shite
Absolutely true!
One upside to that is, that one no longer fears death. I've found that to be empowering, liberating and terrifying all at once.
Godbless you God and Jesus love you
Only a person who has experienced and developed awareness of death in life can truly understand the truth and beauty of that perspective
This was actually my first time seeing/hearing this poem. I felt a strange solace in it. A quiet comfort even, as the words resonated in my soul. Definitely saving this for whenever I need it.
Maybe even look up some more Poe. This may have opened a little window for you. Enjoy if you do! 🦋

same!! beautiful, comforting (and even a little sad) all at the same time. bravo, mr. poe.
I've started to be okay with alone. I suppose from the beginning we were always alone. For those of you who are alone, remember that there are some of us who are too. And in our withdrawal, we can live and be strong, stronger and colder. Not lonelier. Just able to bare the cold that others don't. Whether the cold took the form from our hearts opening up and binded our joy to a single thing. Regardless. Let it be a mystery, and let's live in the chaos all in the hopes to see the beautiful clear sky in the end.
I choose to be alone, not at the beginning of my life though. I used to think people needed each other, then I noticed the strength within me without another.
@@lrsco Yes, you may choose to be alone, others don't though i.e., impaired individuals, individuals diagnosed at early stages of their lives, people lacking in confidence and other attributes, etc. A variety of people sometimes don't have the luxury of choice hence the 'pay for joy' experience you see in the dark streets of the today. Not for the sake of fun, just for the sake of feeling something.. anything. However, irrelevant, my short comment was about the idea of living with seclusion and overcoming it because it most likely will get better at some point in time. In the end of our lives, we define our sky as clear or clouded. That's the most marvelous thing about the universe: the perserverence of the human to exhaust all events including overcoming the darkest one. And sometimes that event is just feeling loneliness. Ain't nothing wrong with that.
Your comment is worth reading! Living in te chaos is what people make think about their’s life
Let's live in the chaos of hopesssss !!!!!!
You are also a poet. Keep writing. We who choose to be alone need community.
No matter how low, or even the pain that I must reap or sow, my words will never hold the weight of POE. For pain is where i live , for pain is where i must grow.

This is probably my favorite poem by Poe
im autistic and this poem reminds me of myself as a child i find it difficult to express my feelings so people think im cold aloof etc but inside i feel everything so even with a crowd around me i feel alone
Still keep coming right back to this... Beautiful.
"All you have loved you have loved alone." Same goes for everyone ELSE.
Very, very, very powerful words..
Not sure why this was recommended to me today, but I'm certainly glad it happened.
As it so often goes with poetry, I'm struggling to interpret it as Poe intended. The first section seems to be Poe distancing himself from others, or at least describing the difference he felt in himself. In the second section he seems to be trying to describe the "mystery" that gripped him throughout and since his dark childhood... then describing all manner of examples of things that might awe or terrify or inspire or otherwise induce him to feeling. But what is "the mystery?" And who is "the demon?"
One of my favorites
Like all forms of art-songs, paintings, poems I think every individual person has their own individual interpretation of it and I don't think any are right or wrong.

Do not mistake loneliness with solitude
@@seeuathebeach you don’t think poe was a lonely man?
@@ben_alfred he shows a positive perspective of being alone. Hence he cannot be lonely.
@@seeuathebeach Poe’s life was extraordinarily hard though. He battled with addiction, and continually lost the people closest to him. What made you interpret this poem as being positive? (not a criticism, I just didn’t see it like that)
Maybe those two go together. You have nothing else to do but look up at the sky and nature around you when you're alone. When you are with people you are more focussed on them.
I memorized this poem in 8th grade. I recited it for the class. At 69 years old, I must say, it was a premonition of my old age.
I memorized the raven in 6th, just for me to be able to read it even when i didn't have it.

"I could not awaken my heart to joy at the same tone. And all I lov'd, I lov'd alone." So harrowing, yet so relatable.
No man, thats when you think you saw what true sorrow looks like, and then he hits you with:
The mystery which binds me still-
From the torrent, or the fountain-
From the red cliff of the mountain-
From the sun that ’round me roll’d
In its autumn tint of gold-
From the lightning in the sky
As it pass’d me flying by-
From the thunder, and the storm-
And the cloud that took the form---
When the rest of Heaven was blue---
Of a demon in my view-

Well. I know a lot of guys in relationship that are literally chained, having to ask for every little social gathering with friends.
They became much happier after they left their one-sided relationship.
Hence why, being alone, can give you more happiness than not being.
But there is also the positive side of relationship.
Yes this poem has a sad tone. But for me it is also hopeful, it makes me feel like I am enough, I can be happy with or without someone by my side. I am no longer afraid of being alone nor do I regard having a relationship as the ultimate goal in life. Seeing the beauty and the ugliness of life is solely dependent on me.

I’m finding my footing again after a horrific trauma and when I look back in my journals and take note of how many WASTED hours I spent trying repeatedly to explain myself and why live alone-instead of being focused on my healing, It’s shocking and even a bit sad. I’ve never felt or stated that I will ALWAYS choose to live alone as I’ve no problem embracing the fact that I love LOVE and haven’t ruled out the possibility of opening up to it. All I know right now is that for me, my mental health MUST come first and my hope is that with time and lots of hard work, I will be able to feel empowered, safe, secure and less fearful that I may 1-honor myself and 2-trust again. I am the only one who is responsible of taking care of me, and if being alone is what feels right and it’s working, that means I AM enough!

My father once said there are two things in life you do alone...birth and death. Get comfortable with your aloneness for no one else will ever see anything quite the same way as you.
You were not born alone. You did not give birth to yourself. You did not safely deliver yourself out of your mother's womb. There were lots of ppl helping. No one is born alone. At the very leasr they have their bio mom with them. Most ppl are born into a very noisy but well cooperating small crowd of vert helpful people. Without others who helped you, you would not have taken your first breath. Whether you die alone or not will be upto you and your fate tho. It is good to deeply feel art and connect to it. But don't get carried away believing in cynical falsitudes just because an older man you respect repeated them to you after hearing it or reading it from another man he respected. Practice critical thinking too. Emotion is not the opposite of reason but an integral part of it. You don't have to sacrifice truth and rationale to make a point.

What I love about this poem is how he reacts to the world around him, he's a sad yet intelligent individual. He sees his differences from other people and realizes how his joys won't be the same as other's. He sees his life as a melancholic journey walked by only himself and his thoughts, yet he still takes note of every detail around him. He may view the path he walked to be depressing, but he still took the time to note down each passing moment, still noticed every object, every idea. He may be a sad fellow, yet he's still a compassionate man as well, he just needed more folks who could walk this winding road with him, to examine everything with him, to be alone with him.
Beautifully said. As an only child it is something I crave this the most. Being able to feel alone without feeling lonely with someone by my side.

I don't know how I haven't heard this poem of his until now, but it hits home a lot. Ever since I was little I've been kind of absorbed in my own world, and I'd do things mostly by myself. All the lines about the lightning and the mountains and everything I ever loved I loved by myself. And all those lines hit me hard, but I got chills at the last one. In college I started having terrible insomnia, and I still have it. Eventually I was given medication which helped me fall asleep, but then I started experiencing sleep paralysis twice a week or more, and I'd see things on a regular basis. I still see things every once in awhile, and the strangest part about this is now I don't feel alone

This isn't a lament, aloneness isn't a burden to be decried as unjust. To love is human, to be loved not always so much. We are owed nothing.
this poem is not about unrequited love
This is my favourite poem. 28 years of life after which I read it seemed to come together in these 22 lines.
Amazing poem, interpreted by an amazing Tom O'Bedlam. His interpretation of the tyger still follows me - and I love every second of it🖤
What a calm, beautiful voice. So soothing with so much meaning to the poem.
Oh, God! Your voice is such an amazing voice.
It's by Tom O'Bedlam.
@@satangel39039 thnx ❤️
In the end, he wasn't alone
A 1000 lonelys commenting, u ain't alone 😍
Appreciate, sentiment of 1000, but I'm alone
I can definitely relate to this poem! Poetry is art & like art is interpreted differently by each person.
You bring tears again
Your words are not only poetry
They are the pain of my soul
You have potrait my hidden feelings
Those tears of trust
And pain of those broken ribs of My faith
My blind trust
My blind faith
Thank you for this beautiful gift 🌼🌺
This voice makes vibration from the deepest part of the heart.
Every time I hear it, my thirst wants to listen more..
Hypnotic and breathtaking. Enjoyed listening 🎶
I love that this was uploaded on my birthday, Edgar Allan Poe is my favorite American writer, and this showed up on my recommendations
Happy (quite belated) Birthday!
A poem that touches on your soul.
When I die, I want this to be played at my funeral.
There’s a big difference between being alone and loneliness.
... Needed this poem today, and that voice dam.
Thank you, beautiful. Greetings from Belgium
This poem is my life. I got poems of my own. I'm a bit afraid to share them because people may fear me. But it's my truth. So maybe if I share my life, then I can give others hope and courage to speak and seek help.
Same. I've read a few of mine to some people but then they are worried about me..nothing to worry about, I feel deeply and have been thru so much
Imagine if Poe had the internet, he would had been less alone as you should be…Best wishes to you.
