She said in one of her later interviews that no man had ever told her she was beautiful. I always thought she was beautiful. She was beautidul and had a great sense of humor. Plus, she knew how to dress and made herself look so classy. Her jewelry is so nice from QVC. It is all so classy and well made. She had an honesty about her that I always loved. I trusted her to be funny and I bieve she was honest.
Measuring inflation. Johnny said, "after today mailing a letter will cost $0.13 a 30% increase. ... soon it will cost more to mail a letter than to just call them on the phone." WOW! Johnny is a prophet.

It's doesn't matter what year it is people are gonna say it sucks not matter what happens. from 1976 to now and for years to come. That is just how people are .
Like hell she won't do them, Joan didn't give a damnd about PC; too bad she didn't live enough for all this mess, she would have killed with her jokes.

@Aaron Digby check out Carole Burnett. She has that ugly duckling gig. She was beautiful like Joan. But in grade school, they were awkward, Joan was overweight. But Carole Burnett is spectacular. I think she predates Joan, I think.
When they show all those people in the audience waving once the new year starts, I can't help but think "I wonder, how many of these people are dead and how did they die"
I can't wait to have you at a party. Instead of noticing the balloons float, you're the type of person waiting for them to pop. Are you the type of person that goes into a donut shop, and all you see is holes ? Try seeing life on the brighter side.
Ahhh. The 70s: At 0:47 Johnny asks the audience "Isn't that pretty?" in reference to the new Tonight Show Band set... there's a slight pause before the APPLAUSE light starts flashing in which you can almost hear all those good Midwestern tourists thinking to themselves, "No! It looks like someone built it on drugs!"
Can anyone explain to me how their New Year's Eve special worked, as it surely was not live? We have different time zones, so midnight in New York means its 9pm in Los Angeles where Carson was based, so how could they see in the new year? They must have just taped a special and aimed for timing it to midnight east coast/west coast when it aired that night on NBC stations right?
That is such a naff new set. Why did they talk it up when there was so much comedy value in taking the piss out of it? On the other hand, imagine a New Year's Eve face-to-face in the company of Joan Rivers ... now that would have been something.
the host felt bad that she was gonna have her own late night talk show which will be the same timeslot as this show and he found out about it from other people first before Joan called him. when she called he hung up and she was banned from the show all the way through when jay leno was hosting. she came back years later when jimmy fallon started hosting the show.
I love Joan Rivers and still crack up!!
We miss you like crazy!
The finest comedian ever! She beats out the best!
Joan was the BEST! Loved her. Thanks for all the wonderful years of laughs!

Just comedian would be better.

Joan for sure was the best, Johnny was jealous of Joan for chasing her dream.
Ms. Joan Rivers was a comedian in a league all Her own!
Joans outfit.. EVERYTHING!! Such a class act!! 🎀💞
She always looked impeccable.

Joan, I wish you were still here. Life is getting so cold and callous now. 😥

She wasn’t a pretty woman until her 70’s. I liked her a lot either way.
“1975 stinks... America is getting crazy 😜! “

1976!! Who else is watching this in 2024 ? Damn I am old !!!!!!
Right here
This episode was on tv last night - it felt so surreal to watch them saying so many times that it had been a rough year. 😢
Measuring inflation. Johnny said, "after today mailing a letter will cost $0.13 a 30% increase. ... soon it will cost more to mail a letter than to just call them on the phone." WOW! Johnny is a prophet.

@Jarred Mello-Neyhart-May As standards for television dropped she was more able to show her true self
Because she was allowed to be more vulgar
Joan was delightful and a riot. Too bad the two ended up the way they did.
How'd they end up? This is years before my time but it's interesting and funny.
Bryan Chapman Joan ended up getting her own show on Fox, and he ended up getting extremely butthurt and never spoke to her again

They thought .13 cents for a stamp in 1976, was high. Welcome to 2023 cost of a stamp .66 and still going up.
Always enjoyed Johnny and Joan.
Did y'all see the commercial break transitions?
"Happy *Coo* Year"... "Happy *Moo* Year"

My Granma Mmakamba was still alive when this interview was going on. God rest her soul.
Love it! Thank you!!!
Crazy woman! Love her! RIP Joan. A little like Gilda Radner.
Back in the New York days when New year's eve fell on a weeknight, Johnny would invite couples up on stage to dance.
So this interview was literally in 1975 & 1976 lol
I love, Joan Rivers! 😀💖

I'm so glad to have lived during this period. May the politically correct era come to a quick conclusion!
Agreed! Brava
Wow! I thought that was a gift Joan was carrying for Johnny BUT it was HER PURSE. Funny AND stylish for the times:-)
Wow 49 years ago and still as relevant today . May they both RIP ,How I miss them👏
This routine did go over very well. But Joan was the best

Classic how they were blaming the year back then too lol 5:09

The Tonight Show had the best band on popular TV EXCEPT for the onSammy Davis Jr. had briefly for his TV show.
What some people don’t realize, is the Tonight Show was taped at 5 in the afternoon, so the happy new year celebration was all staged.
Then again so was the vast majority of Dick Clark's Rock N Eve.
As clock strikes twelve on this show, that was going the year I conceived, imagined that.
When they show all those people in the audience waving once the new year starts, I can't help but think "I wonder, how many of these people are dead and how did they die"
Ain't you a bummer
You’ll be depressed- I do seeing old shows and half of the actors have died
Most of them are still alive. It wasn't that long ago.
@new beginings Yes. I'm sure a number of them are still alive. Many of them looked fairly young.

All those people got dressed in 1975, went home and looked in a mirror in 1976, and thought, "What the hell was I thinking?!"

My new year was fine until high school. That was a 4 year nightmare
Oh, the price increase... I was collecting stamps as a boy in 1975 and 1976, I remember the price going up from 10¢ to 13¢. How cheap that seems now.
Was this live? Like was there actually 12 minutes left in 1975?
was everyone over Carson ed mc maann was awesome I miss star search
...What??
I won't say how old I was in 1975.
The comb over aint working, though it was certainly skillfully labored over.
Odd to hear them complain about a postage stamp going from 10 to 13 cents. As of August 2022, a single stamp is 60 bloody cents. Jiminy Christmas!

I remember less than a few records.
When my kids mock the clothing styles of the time I'm quick to point out that this was how I dressed. Makes 'em mock harder.
Take lots of pictures -- in a decade or so the tables will turn
Ed was verbose when he had a few. Quiet as hell otherwise. I get it.

Why did Joan fall out with the host of the show ?
