kaz & inej have some of the most heartbreaking backstories. they briefly hint at them in the show but their backstories explain why kaz is so obsessed with taking down pekka and working/getting money and how he basically doesnt trust anyone besides inej and jesper. for inej, despite her going through some horrible things she still has a big heart and tries to see the best in people and not fatally harm anyone, plus she basically had everything in her life stolen from her when she was captured and sold to the menagerie so her faith is really all she has left from her childhood so it means a lot to her.
All of the readers know their backstories but we can’t say because they’re spoilers. Kaz’s backstory is the saddest of all and why he can’t bear skin on skin contact. I think we’ll see his backstory in season 2. 😁
I love how into episode 2 Jesper is already your favorite character. I love the crows, the duology is one of my all time favorite and the casting was perfect.
The ending of this episode is especially poignant if you remember that in Ep 1 Mal says the two things he and Alina learned at the orphanage were: 1) never cry in public; and 2) always carry a weapon. And that's exactly what she does here - she breaks down once she is sure she's alone and then immediately goes searching for a weapon.
@UThink UCan That’s a little strong, no? I could certainly get behind that if we were talking about book!Mal, but the show managed to make him an actually likable character who cares about Alina a lot right off the bat, but doesn’t feel entitled to her the way he does in the books. As for Alina having no agency... I agree that she’s a far more passive character than she should be (has been since the books) and the writers should remedy that as well.
@UThink UCan that sounds like a criticism of the books to me. In my opinion the show fixed both Mal's unbearable immaturity and Alina's lack of agency. I could list the number of big decisions Alina makes in the show but that would involve spoilers. The show did admittedly keep Alina and Mal's codependency, but it seems to actually be exploring that - and not uncritically. Still, if the show is not your cup of tea that's fine.
Okay so Grisha is the general term for people with abilities. They’re divided into 3 main groups: Corporalki-the order of the living and the dead. They wear the red kefta. And consist of three types. -Heartrenders: can manipulate the body/destroy it. -Healers: self-explanatory. they can heal wounds, repair etc. -tailors: transform facial features/ appearance, make you look better etc. Etherealki-the order of the summoners. Control the elements. Again 3 types. They wear the blue keftas Squallers- control wind Inferni- controls fire Tidemakers- control water. There are rare types. The darkling is a shadow summoner and then there is the sun summoner. Materialki- the Order of fabrikators. their powers focus on composite material like metal, textiles, chemicals etc. There are two types and they wear the purple kefta. -Durasts: can manipulate glass, steel, wood, stone, any solid. -Alkemi: specialize in chemicals. Hope that helps!
please dont post any spoilers on kaz and inej and basically anything with the crows plotlines. it may take another season or two to fully understand why kaz is so money hungry and id rather nothing be spoiled so they can have the same experience as us book readers :) keep going!
Okay thank fuck i found u...i just watched second season...and even when i watched the first season i was wondering if i should buy the trilogy and read it but imjust asking myself is it worth it,is there still enough details to be intrigued about?
Mal is very in denial. Most of their lives, Alina and him have been picked on by priviledge folks like the Grisha and animosity builds up. Up until that day and for almost 2 decades nonstop, he only saw Grishas as bullies (we can kinda see this in the first episode too at the end of his brawl) and Kirigan himself kinda has a 'dark' reputation as the cold and calculating general of the Second Army. He's also simply really worried about Alina who's experiencing this world shattering change and he wants to be there for her... but he can't just straight up admit to it. I'm loving you guys' reactions, your SnB videos actually introduced me to your channel and I've been binging your playlists since! Can't wait to see more :)
you two nerding about this show(without knowing what readers of the books know) is so fun! i'm really enjoying these reactions and your ideas and opinions ❤
Here's a list of the different Grisha Orders: *Corporalki:* they wear red, and they can manipulate the human body to either heal (Healers), hurt (Heartrenders), or change (Tailors). *Etherealki:* they wear blue, and they're summoners, basically. Can summon fire, water, air. Rarely, a Grisha comes along who can summon darkness or light, and in that case, they would wear black. *Materialki:* they wear purple, and can manipulate either different metals or compounds, or alchemy, in a sense. Can change the state of something or make it better.
I said the same thing about Alina, that she reminds me of Mikasa with her devotion to Mal. When she burned those maps to go with him, I said “That is totally a Mikasa move.” I’m glad I’m not the only one who saw that. Also I’m finally getting to this show and I’m happy to have reactors I like to watch with!
haha your reaction to Kirigan coming to save Alina and using the Cut was my reaction too😂Ben Barnes was a great cast. This show is pretty good. I have to say between the two series (Shadow and Bone & Six of crows), I enjoyed Six of Crows more. But it was really cool to see how they combined the characters of S&B and Six of Crows to fit in one show. Can't wait for season 2 to see the main plot of Six of Crows unfold.
The political aspects of this world are definitely fascinating! Especially how technology is actually advancing to compete with the Grisha and how that complicates feelings within the Ravkan army. If this helps at all, think of the Fold like the Berlin Wall and how that divided Germany. West Ravka is affluent and East Ravka dependent upon it for supplies. And besides the problem of the Fold, Ravka also has to deal with being at war with the Druskelle(Fjerdans), and Shu-Han. Both countries are seeking to hunt Grisha, which is why in the show Alina is often singled out. Think of Ketterdam as a neutral Amsterdam. Obviously as the show goes on you will get a lot more answers to your questions about the Fold and the world! The show only gets better from here!
Yes!!! I'm glad to see your reaction 'cause how deep you can get at understanding the complicated politics of this universe. You make me think a lot from many different characters' perspectives. 👍
-When the general asks her "what are you" that question is directed to the Grisha not to the person, he wants to know what powers she has, to what order she belongs. And when he realizes that she has no idea, then he goes on to cut her off. -The Grisha control matter. -The fandom thinks that a million kruge is an insult to Alina, I mean, everyone is after her now. She is "The Prize". -The problem with Alina is that she doesn't want her powers, her priority is Mal, being "The Sun Summoner" means being different from Mal, and therefore having to live separately. And that is something she doesn't tolerate. -The bond is strong, both are refugees and without family, they are the only stable thing they have in life. -Love your reaction and comments. ✌😁
Your reaction for episode 2 was even better. Jesper is one of my favorite characters as well after Kaz and Inej. Jesper is great and I always love seeing him twirl his guns. I don’t know if you guys know but the show got renewed for a season 2. It should be coming out later this year. Hopefully.
I'M SO HAPPY YOU GUYS ARE REACTING TO THIS SHOW. It's a pretty decent ya book-to-movie adaptation, especially since the groups that we follow have nothing to do with each other, and have their own separate book series. It's interesting to watch them interact with each other on screen.
I literally just joined your patreon... FOR THIS. I'm so hyped for you watching Shadow & Bone, I'm so excited. I know you will enjoy it. if you have any doubts the show answer for you, just ask away!! I might have most answers jsjsjs Also your reaction to the first ep already got 4k views just saying uwu
So glad you guys are continuing this show! Really enjoyed your reactions :) as a reader of the books its very interesting to see you slowly figuring out the world and characters without knowing any backstories!
I watched this show and loved it so much that I bought and read the books. Imagine my sadness when my 3 favorite characters were not in the first book. ;( The Crows have their own series that I loved.
kaz isn't so much in debt as another certain character, but he IS looking for revenge. the six of crows duology does such a great job with all of the characters backstories, so his obsession with money and taking down pekka rollins (brick by brick) will probably be cleared up in the future.
First off I love these reactions. Seeing your opinions from a point of view of someone who haven’t read the books is so fun and interesting! Secondly...nine tail brush I love your coat! I want one 😆
Mal & Alina are biracial: half Ravkan, half Shu (parent from Shu Han) but raised in Ravka. Their parents died trying to cross the fold when they were children leaving them to be raised in an orphanage. Ravka is based on Tsarist Russia in style. Shu Han is in the south and is a vague asian type of country. Ravka is not at peace with them because they do terrible experiments on Grisha to try and get their power. Thats why Mal and Alina to the extent they look Shu are discriminated against. Fjierda is based on a vague scandinavian type of country and is to the north. They follow a religion that states Grisha are abominations of nature and to be killed (they used to burn them at the stake). They are actively at war with Ravka. The Druskelle are their elite military witchhunters who hunt Grisha. They also consider wolves to be sacred and are paired with a white wolf to assist them to fight Grisha (which would have been nice for them to actually have wolves in the show... its hinted at tho)
I recommend watching the making of the world shadow & bone video on the Netflix RUclips, it gives background info about the grisha ranks and the different locations (there's no spoilers)
This show makes much more sense if you know where the countries and locations are, so to give a bit of context: - There are five main countries, Ravka, Fyerda, Shu Han, Kerch, and Novya Zem. Fyerda, Ravka, and Shu Han share a continent, Fyerda north of Ravka and Shu Han south of Ravka. Kerch is a small but wealthy country in the middle of the ocean. Novya Zem is on the other side of the ocean west of Fyerda/Ravka/Shu Han, and they become more important in later books. - Ravka is split by the fold into West and East Ravka, West being much smaller but has access to the sea for trade and resources, East being much bigger but completely surrounded by Fyerda, the Fold, and Shu Han. East depends on West for their resources since they are at war with their neighboring countries. The Little Palace and the military base we see at the beginning are in East Ravka. Mal and Alina grew up in East Ravka. You can get around the fold to get to West Ravka but the fold extends into enemy lines so it’s not a safe journey and it takes much longer. - Kerch, being in the middle of the ocean, gets their wealth from being the middle man of all trade between the five countries. This is where Kaz, Inej, and Jesper are. They can easily access any country (minus East Ravka) by boat. They are a bit of a neutral country when it comes to war because they want good relations with everyone in order to keep up trade. - There’s another country located just west of Fyerda in the middle of the ocean called the Wandering Isle that doesn’t really have much importance to the story other than sometimes people mention it.
Just dropping a comment for the youtube algorithm/to give some love to this series, with a little luck you'll continue it. You're great at reaction videos and the series is one of the better new ones, plus it's only 8 episodes.
thank u for this! am so excited for the next episodes, your thoughts are on point and you should definitely watch the videos of Netflix about the world for the extra help! i love s&b so so much THANK U AGAIN
This is a good show. I've seen cobra Kai isn't doing well in the poll but I strongly suggest it even if you watch it off camera. Id rather see you guys react to it but if not then still watch it. Especially if you like the karate kid movies. It's a really well done show
2k 😆 I think you've underestimated the power of us book readers. Why wouldn't I show up to watch two adorable guys enjoy one of my favorite book to tv adaptations? ( my favorite is The Expanse, in case you were wondering 😊)
@@whitenoisereacts The best kind of surprise! Right? I'm excited to know you guys will be continuing the series! Quick question: are you the kind of viewer who watches a show and then reads the source material afterward? If so, do you have any plans to do that with Shadow and Bone? It would be dope to do a live discussion about the changes and what your thoughts as a filmmaker and (hopefully) a fan and where you think the series will go next. That is, if you are inclined to do that kind of thing 😆 If not, I'll be more than content to watch the reaction videos.
I enjoyed your discussion about the morality of what is happening in the story. When Alina put that letter opener under her pillow did you recall the very early discussion between her and Mal about always having a weapon on hand? I thought that was a nice detail.
There’s 3 orders of the grisha. - Corporalki, or the Order of the Living and the Dead. Within this order you have healers (they can heal people), heartrenders (They can use their power to damage a person's internal organs. Their ability ranges from slowing a person's pulse to snatching the air from their lungs. The target must be in their line of sight.), and the rare tailors (ability to change a person's appearance.) they wear the red keftas (coats) - Etherealki, or the Order of Summoners. Within this order you have Inferni (manipulate fire), Tidemaker (manipulate water), Squallers (manipulate air). Then you have the two rare types of summoners the shadow and sun summoner. They wear the blue keftas (coats) except for the general he wears a black one - Materialki, or the Order of Fabrikators. Within this order you have Durasts (manipulate glass, steel, wood, plants, stone, or anything solid on a molecular level.) and Alkemi (They specialize in chemicals like blasting powders and poisons.) they wear purple keftas (coats) The scene with Kaz and Pekka Rollins (the older guy who threatened him), their scene makes much more sense and is more impactful if you know their history. But I won’t spoil that for you because it was one of the best reveals in the book. But just know Kaz and Pekka have some history. Also the soliders that were attacking Alina and the other grisha are called druskelle they are part of the Fjerdan military (Fjerda is north of Ravka). The druskelle are trained to hunt and kill grisha or kidnap them so they can stand trial and be burned at the stake. The marking on Inej’s wrist is a feather in a bird cage I believe (in the books it’s just a feather though I think) Tante Heleen (hope I spelled that right) bought Inej when she was 14 from slavers and Inej was forced to work in Tante Heleens brothel (or pleasure house as the books call it) called the Menagerie and Kaz is slowly paying off Inej’s “contract” but he hasn’t finished paying yet so she still can’t leave Ketterdam without Tante Heleens permission.
Something I wish the show did, was explain how Grisha powers were not magic. It’s been mentioned but not explain. There is a very wide resentment for magic all over the world in the Grishaverse because it is widely hurtful. It’s called Merzost which in Ravkan literally translates to abomination. It is different from what the Grisha naturally practice, because it goes against nature and creates things. Because the Grisha are still the only ones that can do it, though, that’s why even Ravkans who have the second army and all it’s advantages, are fearful of them. But the Grisha practice the Small Science, which is using the matter or “the making at the heart of the world”. So literally, physics. But basically: Corporalki (in red) control bodies. In the second army they are trained to either become healers or heartrenders (killers). The Etherealki (in blue) are summoners, born with the ability to bend/use fire, wind, or water. The Materialnik/Fabrikators can manipulate metals, textiles, glass, chemicals, and stuff. So they can make weapons, gear for the war, but also stronger buildings, bridges or whatever. They don’t create anything. They use what’s already there and concentrate/bend/use/call to it to serve them. Hope that helps understand everything a bit :)
You guys talk about Alina having a responsibility, and the narrative pushes that as well. But like. The Fold is an inconvenience. All the problems that come with The Fold are pretty much of Ravkas own making. The other half of the country wants to secede, they’re at war with their neighbors: why should any of that matter to a war orphan who is despised and discriminated against for her background? Why should she make it easier to fight a war? It could make travel in general easier, but if Ravka wasn’t so shit at politics it wouldn’t matter nearly as much.
I do hope you both stick with the reactions for this Shadow and Bone but I get there's a lot you guys have requests for. I'll just keep my fingers crossed. Fyi... LOTS of bad is planned for the sun summoner.
kaz & inej have some of the most heartbreaking backstories. they briefly hint at them in the show but their backstories explain why kaz is so obsessed with taking down pekka and working/getting money and how he basically doesnt trust anyone besides inej and jesper. for inej, despite her going through some horrible things she still has a big heart and tries to see the best in people and not fatally harm anyone, plus she basically had everything in her life stolen from her when she was captured and sold to the menagerie so her faith is really all she has left from her childhood so it means a lot to her.
they will probably explain all of that in season 2
All of the readers know their backstories but we can’t say because they’re spoilers. Kaz’s backstory is the saddest of all and why he can’t bear skin on skin contact. I think we’ll see his backstory in season 2. 😁
I love how into episode 2 Jesper is already your favorite character. I love the crows, the duology is one of my all time favorite and the casting was perfect.

I never noticed that, that's so sad
@UThink UCan That’s a little strong, no? As for Alina having no agency... I agree that she’s a far more passive character than she should be (has been since the books) and the writers should remedy that as well.
@UThink UCan that sounds like a criticism of the books to me. In my opinion the show fixed both Mal's unbearable immaturity and Alina's lack of agency. I could list the number of big decisions Alina makes in the show but that would involve spoilers. The show did admittedly keep Alina and Mal's codependency, but it seems to actually be exploring that - and not uncritically. Still, if the show is not your cup of tea that's fine.

Episode one is at 7.8k and this episode is at 1.9k so far ladies and gentlemen we got them.
Love your discussions guys, I knew you’d like the political depth of this world. Can’t wait for the rest❤️
The crows (Inej Kaz and Jesper) are the best part of the show I dont make the rules
This is a good show. I've seen cobra Kai isn't doing well in the poll but I strongly suggest it even if you watch it off camera. Id rather see you guys react to it but if not then still watch it. Especially if you like the karate kid movies. It's a really well done show
Loved the reaction 😍😍😍
I read the first book and honestly wasn't a huge fan of it. i definitely like the show better than the book
read six of crows it's so good.
Read the Six of Crows duology instead its so oooo much better. You dont need to read the og trilogy to understand SoC.
I don't really love the shadow and bone series but I'm obsessed with the Six of crows duology, just read the duology it's totally worth it!
2k 😆 I think you've underestimated the power of us book readers. Why wouldn't I show up to watch two adorable guys enjoy one of my favorite book to tv adaptations? ( my favorite is The Expanse, in case you were wondering 😊)
Lol, hey, it’s a pleasant surprise
@@whitenoisereacts The best kind of surprise! Right? I'm excited to know you guys will be continuing the series!
Quick question: are you the kind of viewer who watches a show and then reads the source material afterward? If so, do you have any plans to do that with Shadow and Bone? It would be dope to do a live discussion about the changes and what your thoughts as a filmmaker and (hopefully) a fan and where you think the series will go next. That is, if you are inclined to do that kind of thing 😆 If not, I'll be more than content to watch the reaction videos.
if you are confused, you can always pull up the map of the world. just google it
There are several maps tho and they contain spoilers
@@queenigelkotte im sorry but you'll only see the spoilers if you already know them
pleaseee keep doing shadow and bone!!! (edit: i may or may have not joined patreon for this)
Kaz is just greedy period. “My mother is Ketterdam. She birthed me in the harbor. And my father is profit. I honor him daily.”
I enjoyed your discussion about the morality of what is happening in the story. When Alina put that letter opener under her pillow did you recall the very early discussion between her and Mal about always having a weapon on hand? I thought that was a nice detail.
Yall gotta watch Part 2 of the Dark Knight Returns
OMG YES YES, so excited for this
i’m so excited for this
Love it, please do more!
You guys should watch The OA or ARES. I loved these shows and they’re both on netflix!
The OA is something else! I never managed to convince anyone to watch it yet though. It's too wild but I love it for that.
The target must be in their line of sight.), and the rare tailors (ability to change a person's appearance.) they wear the red keftas (coats)
- Etherealki, or the Order of Summoners. Within this order you have Inferni (manipulate fire), Tidemaker (manipulate water), Squallers (manipulate air). Then you have the two rare types of summoners the shadow and sun summoner. They wear the blue keftas (coats) except for the general he wears a black one
- Materialki, or the Order of Fabrikators. Within this order you have Durasts (manipulate glass, steel, wood, plants, stone, or anything solid on a molecular level.) and Alkemi (They specialize in chemicals like blasting powders and poisons.) they wear purple keftas (coats)
The scene with Kaz and Pekka Rollins (the older guy who threatened him), their scene makes much more sense and is more impactful if you know their history.
But basically:
Corporalki (in red) control bodies.
Yes do more!😂😂😂
Solid series 👌
please please please continue watching shadow and bone
last episode i was ill, this time my partner is ill... are you doing some dark witchcraft with these videos :')
No....I'm sorry that sucks
YESSSS LETS GO
Uh-- yeah!!!! Do the rest of the series please 💜
Channels like this are the fucking reason Fair use is such a controversial issue
What are u talking about dude?
please wait until like five-six episode before judging the Kirigan. Don't rely on other people's comments :) have a nice day!
@UThink UCan lol i see you EVERYWHERE. im impressed by your lack of chill but you do you, ig.
I do hope you both stick with the reactions for this Shadow and Bone but I get there's a lot you guys have requests for. I'll just keep my fingers crossed.
Fyi... LOTS of bad is planned for the sun summoner.
We are, no worries lol
Can you guys react to host it’s a horror movie it’s like unfriended
Please react to LoveCraft country !!!😫
Can you react to the amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2
Abusing the hell out of that “fair use” I see. Well played.
What's that supposed to mean? lol. Under fair use I should be able to use all of it and be fine honestly
completely out of left field but you should react to one piece lmao
