If you want a more developed love story from Pride and Prejudice then I highly recommend the 1995 BBC miniseries production starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. Lovely movie. 6 episodes, total 5.5 hours runtime. More screen-time to work with, more characters from the book, more drama, more understanding, more tension - a wonderful production.

@@SaudadeCB Hm, investigations shall have to ensue then :)
I'm kind of pleased that so far, all the versions I have seen have been notably different - in various ways - and yet have managed to keep the original plot mostly intact. After all, what's the point of making the same one over again? There are of course always some parts that get lost in translation or have to be solidly remade to fit the new narrative - we couldn't call it an adaptation otherwise, could we?
The one thing that generally bothers me with multiple adaptations though is that you have to move around some lines between characters to get neccessay dialogue into the movie while keeping only the characters you absolutely need. No clue why, but I'm always miffed hearing notable lines and quotes coming from the wrong character. *shrug* go figure why

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies was actually also a book. The author took the original novel and added just enough zombies to make a fan with a twisted sense of humor to howl with laughter. But otherwise being the same story word for word.
They did a pretty good job doing the same with this movie. But it is a very unique thing, so I wouldn't be surprised if people, who hadn't been to the weird corner of the book store, left the movie theater not having seen what they expected, and therefore disappointed.
And like others will tell you as well: The movie you saw was far from the original. Pride and Prejudice has been dramatized regularly since the camera was invented (and probably before that). The common consensus seem to be, that the best version is from 1995 with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle.

    • @pollyparrot9447
      @pollyparrot9447 10 месяцев назад +5

I agree that the 1995 TV version is the best adaptation of the book. The Keira Knightly version was woeful (not blaming her, but the script was very bad). I thought that Seth Grahame-Smith's idea of cutting and pasting some zombie action into the book (and cheekily thanking Jane Austen for being out of copyright) was very funny, but not funny enough for me to give him my money, although I did love the book cover art. The makers of this movie took Grahame-Smith's idea and fleshed it out into a very entertaining story. It is really beautiful to look at too. I do think that there is a slight problem with your P&P adaptation, though, when your Mr Collins is sexier than your Mr Darcy 😁

    • @HuntingViolets
      @HuntingViolets 10 месяцев назад +1

@@pollyparrot9447 I think the publisher came up with the mashup idea and pitched it to Grahame-Smith or something like that, rather than it being the author's idea. I'll have to look up those details again at some point.

Fun fact: This version of Pride & Prejudice was actually a book published in 2009 written by Seth Grahame-Smith who eventually adapted it to film, he was the Director on the project.
Grahame-Smith took the original work and combined it with modern zombie fiction, which is why you find it so similar to the filmatisation you watched - it *is* the same, scene-by-scene, all the way through. Because it is so very similar, the book credits Jane Austen as one of its authors.
The actors have said that the most difficult thing about filming was to keep all the lines straight and getting them out comprehensibly while performing the fight scenes. Especially the one fight between Elizabeth and Darcy at the cottage took a while to get right.

I caught this late one night searching for something to watch on cable (I've suffered from insomnia since childhood).
I had low expectations just on the face of it; it's a ridiculous concept to blend the two genres, but what the hell.
SO - SO - SO glad I caught this that night!
I'm no fan of zombie movies, but THIS is STELLAR! And it somehow managed to perfectly follow the original story!
I've been telling people for years now that this is the best version of "Pride and Prejudice" I've ever seen. They get it historically accurate down to the dimness of candlelit evening parties!
One wink was that, since this story is the original 'bodice-ripper', they actually show the fight between Darcy and Elizabeth with Mr Darcy ripping Elizabeth's bodice.
Love that you burly men watched this; loved even more that you are familiar with the story having seen a previous version (without zombies); in ECSTACY that you enjoyed it!
Gotta say, it didn't need to 'pick a lane'; the strongest rope is a braid of fibers. I saw "Rocky Horror Picture Show" when it first hit the theaters and fizzled, and now it's a sensation. 1939's "The Wizard of Oz" also was panned; now it's an institution. "The 5th Element" is another flop-to-fame film. Initial popularity is not the criteria for judging the quality of a film, and cult status tends to grow over time. These films I mentioned were 'weird' and didn't 'pick a lane' either. But they were satisfying, engaging, and stimulating in the way only true art can be.
Begging you to react to "Warm Bodies"; you won't be sorry. (Stars a young Nicholas Hoult.)

Matt Smith and Lily James started dating after meeting on this movie and were together for years. She's in one of the only "Live Action Remakes" of Disney animated movies that I thought worked well- she was "Cinderella" for Kenneth Branagh's movie in 2015. Picking up on the discussion at the end on taking a different "spin" on the zombie flick, I'd suggest these 3 if you haven't seen them: Peter Jackson's riotously gory "Dead Alive" (absolutely hysterical), "The Girl With All the Gifts", which has the same "zombie-origin" as "The Last of Us", which makes it somewhat realistic and therefore even more chilling, and "Little Monsters" (not the Fred Savage film of the 80s, the recent film with Lupita Nyong'o), which perfectly mixes horror and comedy.

Oak, the reason why you liked the lines in this better is because a lot more of them were taken straight from the original book by Jane Austen than the Keira Knightly movie even took from it. The book has absolutely great writing. Y’all should watch the ‘95 BBC miniseries, which is a much more faithful adaptation of the book, and thus much better written, than the Keira Knightly movie.

The 1995 miniseries is wonderful and this movie has a couple of homages to it, namely the Darcy dive in the lake and the double wedding. The pacing is much more faithful to the book than the 2005 movie version.
The stories of P&P&Z and the 2005 were similarly condensed, but the addition of action with the zombie plot gave it more stakes and better justifies the connection of the leads in what seems like a short time, though many months are actually going by.
Oak, don't feel bad for liking this version more. I love the book, the 2005 film, and the miniseries and I still love Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. It's a very entertaining watch with an engaging zombie plot. I suppose it helps that I have a soft spot for zombies, as well as a love for P&P. And this is all from the perspective of a person with a creative writing degree and 10 years experience as a professional zombie.
I'll also say the P&P&Z film adaptation is better than the book, but that's just my opinion. They're quite different.

For the Oak in Regency era when courting someone you where never alone. You would go to their house to call on them, in there drawing room with their mom, brother, dad, or maid there to watch. When there were balls you could ask them to dance, but never too much that was seen as improper. You could take them on walks or a picnic but again someone was alway there behind to chaperone, so there was never any true privacy. If you wanted you could send them letters and that was about it. there where no dates like today.

Honest question: Does any other movie delve into how earlier eras would have dealt with a zombie apocalypse? Obviously P&P&Z is a parody, but it does raise the question of how historical time periods would have handled zombies. I suspect the answer is throw holy water at it, but I was curious if anyone knew of any movies that weren't set in the modern day (I consider 1960s the modern day for the purpose of this question so I'm not talking Night of the Living Dead). With all the World War Zs and 28 Days Later and Train to Busans and every other zombie apocalypse movie out there, I'm curious if there are any set earlier in history.

I think a lot of Jane Austen fans were not that interested because of zombies, and zombie fans were not that interested because of Jane Austen; there weren't enough people who were fans of both (we're out here) to give it good box office. If you read Austen's juvenile works, though, they are kind of unhinged, so I wonder what she'd have thought of this. I thought this was better than the book (P&P&Z, not the original P&P), really.

It’s less of a spoof or a mere retelling, but more of a re-contextualization, where it retells the story in a new context that does not take away from the themes and lessons of the original (or at least the versions that are most known by modern audiences), but adds to it. Not unlike Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

It's funny when you refer to the 2005 _Pride and Prejudice_ as the original. There were several versions before this, including the 1940 movie with Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier, and two miniseries, one of which is the very popular 1995 version with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth. (Colin Firth later plays Mark Darcy in _Bridget Jones's Diary,_ which has some loose inspiration from the book--very loose.)

Thus reminds me of another movie I loved the bombed at the box office Cowboys and Aliens. People expected it to be a comedy spoof movie, but it was a straight western cowboy movie except there was an alien invasion. It was never meant to be a funny movie and people just didn't get that. But if you love westerns and you love sci-fi then you'll love seeing them mashed together with an all-star cast! 😁
Kind of like this, if you're a Pride and Prejudice fan and you also enjoy zombies movies then you'll love it, but of you go into it expecting a hilarious comedy movie you'll be disappointed.

To be fair to The Appleton Oak, the 2005 P&P is a longtime favorite comfort movie of mine, due to being given the novel at around 8 years old - and I was ALSO immediately more invested in this storyline 🤣
You cant lose when you add a fantastic horror-comedy author and Natalie Portman production to the classic formula of Jane Austen.

And the lines, all taken fairly well straight from the book, but altered just enough to fit this world... it's really quite brilliantly done. And well filmed.

A good one guys! I recommend you to watch Stoneheart Asylum, it's a film with Kate Beckinsale quite unique and perfect for Halloween season.
I enjoyed P&P and Zombies in many aspects,... but one: its pace, for it feels to me kinda rushed. A vital part of this romantic story is the change in our characters in a realistic length of time, with this film there's not even a week to change Elizabeth's prejudice and Darcy's pride. It's even kind of cliché "protagonists realize their love while fighting" sentiment. I think the reason for this is because it's difficult to make a solid two-hour P&P movie with only one theme, now just try to mash it up with a Zombie apocalypse world with new rules, characters, plots and ending. Why Wickham didn't eat brains after he was biten? Why the Bennets are the only one fighting if there's supossed to be other women and men able to know mortal arts? And the four horsemen seemed quite meh?

The movie is based on a book written by Seth Grahame-Smith, which is based on Jane Austen's P&P work.
There's a prequel and sequel written by other authors.
Unfortunately the movie didn't do well at the box office when it was released, so the other books are unlikely to be made into film.
The movie is slightly different to the book, but I like both.
For example in the book Wickham is crippled after Darcy breaks nearly every bone in his body and is forced to marry Lydia.
And Darcy gets infected by Anne de Bourgh who is a zombie and jealous of Lizzy. Lizzie has to find a cure to save her beloved.
