  • This was a great multi-purpose welding project because we got to use all sort of welding skills here. These columns were a fun build but they were heavy and I am happy to get them out of the garage.

I think you’re too hard on yourself regarding the 7018. That slag popping off in one easy motion is a compliment unto itself. I inspect welds for a living & you’re doing a good job brother! Thanks for the content.

7018, second pass should go on the bottom to give you a shelf for the 3rd pass. The gas CFH could cause your "worm tracks". CFH over 40 causes turbulence in the gas and fails to cover the weld correctly. I run a lot of dual shield and don't exceed 35CFH on 90% of my guns up to 5/64" wire

I'm a flux core welder and you get thoose worm tracks from either stick out is too close use a 1/2" to 3/4 stick out or it could be from bad wire but your gonna need to turn up that gas flow from 15 to 30 for that 1/2" stick out 👍

Worm tracking are marks on the surface of the weld bead that are caused from the gas that is created by the flux in the core of the wire. The gas causes worm tracking when there is excessive voltage for a given wire feed setting/amperage. Turn up your wire speed or your voltage down.

According to Esab on some .045 dual shield 7100 I was running it was moisture in the wire that causes worm hole porosity. It seemed about right as it cleaned up after burning a little wire and then came back at the end of the spool.

The thing I love about stick is you can get really good results with a simple DC welder that costs just over $100.. Yeah I know, sounds ridiculous but the ToolIOM machines are cheap and absolute beasts! I paid a little over $200 (300 today) for my ToolIOM MIG welder, with a stick mode and it will do about 150amps at 100% duty cycle. Their basic stick machine is just the stick function, with a hot start function..:)

Great video Jim! I've found that giving about 3/4" stick out on dual shield eliminates the worm tracks. Also to high of voltage will also cause worm tracks. Anyways keep it up man really enjoy your videos.

  • @rj3_golf

Worm hole porosity comes from your ctwd (contact to work distance) keep that nozzle a little further out and you should be fine.

    • @phillhuddleston9445

I had to weld a plate like that on a pole the size of a telephone pole I used a 120 Mig 3 laps around it. I should have used a stick but that's all they had to weld with. I made it work I had to weld 10 of them. None of them broke they all last for 3 year's taking picture's my brother in law worked for the company he told me they are still using them. I thought for shire one would would brake I didn't think it got hot enough for the thick metal I tried to burn in the metal as deep as the small machine would go.

Why would you not bevel the tubing for a 100% penetration, for a "proper" weld?. Also your "single pass" dual shield weld toes had obvious cold laps, and would not pass any visual inspection. The spray arc looked good but obviously lacked penetration, due to faulty practices of not beveling your material first. But as a 37 year UA pipefitter, I can say those stringers from the LoHydrogen rod look pretty good, as much as I hate to admit it! lol
