For those who are joining and going to boot camp, I'll pass to you the best piece of advice I got in boot camp in 1982. "If you're gonna be a paint chipper, be the best damn paint chipper they got!!!" I have applied this advice from the minute I heard it, thru 26 years of Naval service and 10 years after retirement. Still applies today! Good luck. You will enjoy your time int he Navy regardless of how long you serve. If you serve honorably, you are a patriot!
I'm at AIT right now in the army and I was so curious about the navy training process because people kept saying it was easy but I'm glad to see it can be just as tough. Respect to all my military brothers and sisters out there! We love to rag on each other but if we ever see combat, everybody's needed
Bootcamp is hard, it is intense, it supposed to be that way, but years even decades later, you will look back and thank those RDCs for making you stronger. I know I do. I haven't thought back to boot camp in awhile (almost two years). It was these videos that reminded me of my time because EO1 Sperry was my 2nd RDC. Amazing mentor and leader, who is the only reason I have continued my career. Even when I wanted to give up, he'd push me and built my confidence to where it is now. Honestly, one of the best RDCs in the Navy.
Honor, courage and commitment are not just words, they are the foundation that the US Navy is built upon. For those who cannot learn, adapt and be part of a team, it is much better for the Navy and the recruit to find out early when lives are NOT on the line. After three decades of US Naval service and having been retired for over a decade.....I still miss the camaraderie I had with those I have served with. If you wish to be the best, you’ve got to be willing to give more of yourself than you ever thought possible and only then can you see if you can make the grade and be a member of the greatest Navy in the world. Live your life with honor and you’ll never have regret.
I hope y’all know when they get evaluated for separation 99% of the time it’s the recruits quitting. They don’t get picked out unless they have something medically wrong. The twins most likely went to medical and said they were depressed and had anxiety.
Wrong they quit because of the Syrian conflict that went nowhere. Said “ I didn’t join to go to war for a country that isn’t mine” it’s what the other recruit from this documentary said they told him. They were born in Baton Rouge and also lived in in Louisiana when joining. I guess cause they are dual citizens because their parents are from Australia they don’t look at America as their country. It was all an excuse to quit. They didn’t want to be there. Watch their demeanor the whole time they acted like they didn’t expect it to be hard at all.
It seemed from episode 2 on, the twins had a pissy attitude towards boot camp. They were willing to exploit the US Navy's plethora of opportunities; but quit when they may have to perform the role they voluntarily enlisted for.
Guys if you are thinking about joining the military and dont want to war don't go. For every person who doesn't want to fight just makes it harder for the crew. They have to pull there weight and your weight. You are just taking up space and supplies

In the navy you are not a person you are a sailor, your home is the ship you defend your home at all costs. There is not room for someone not will to get the job done
Why would someone that can't swim join of all branches.....the Navy?!? That'd be like being terrified of heights and joining the ironworkers union that works high up on skyscrapers in the wind.
There’s a lot of people who have rarely, if even, gotten into the water. Unfortunately, that’s a lot of recruits from the inner cities or other places where black and brown people were historically barred from swimming pools. Of a division with about twenty black recruits, I was one of 4 who passed the swim test on the first try. You don’t need to be Michael Phelps or Katie Ledecky to pass but the Navy will work with you to get you up to speed. If (general/generic) you want to join, this need not be a barrier to stop you.

If you don't learn before, they will "teach" you in bootcamp. Trust me, you don't want them to "teach" you. It took me five weeks to "learn" how to swim, mainly because of their teaching methods. Please learn before you go...

Today is my daughter-in-law Aiyana's first day in Chicago and her first day at boot camp it's going to be tough for her but I know that she will succeed because now she is a RUE!!! She just married my son and went off to boot camp all in one week, she is a very brave and strong willed young lady. It is an honor as well as a blessing to have her as part of my family we all are so very proud of her she will make an awesome sailor YOU GO GIRL!!! We LOVE HER so very much and we are VERY PROUD OF HER!!! We appreciate all the men and women who serve in our armed forces and protect all of us Americans. OH, MY GOD...... If you're going to join the military, any branch of the military...you need, NEED to be in some type of shape. And no, "round" is not a shape when talking about the military. Push-ups, sit-ups, running, 8 count body builders, flutter kicks, superman's etc.... You should be able to do lots of each. If you know you're going to join, or if you're in DEP, work out. It's not a secret that the military boot camps use physical "reinforcement" (exercises) to both punish and get their point across. If you're in shape, EVERYTHING is easier....EVERYTHING. It's also one less thing to have to worry about. Learn your general orders....and don't "sort of" know them, don't "kind of" know them....KNOW THEM. Everything you can learn before you go will help you. Know the ranks, it's not that tough. If you're over-weight, lose the weight BEFORE you go or you're going to get "extra attention". The last thing you want is your DS, DI, or RDC's (I believe they call them now) undivided attention.
TL. Joining the military is a commitment a serious one....if you're even thinking about it, don't...DO NOT take it lightly. But I'll tell you this as someone who served for 10 years on active duty, the last 7 with the Marine Corps as an FMF Corpsman (to include combat), the military can change your life.....and change it for the better. Who you are NOW...doesn't matter, it's who you are in the service. If you do decide to join, take it seriously. As I said, work out BEFORE you go....and do it consistently. Be in shape, know your general orders, know the ranks. Know all you can before you get there. My recruiter was honest with me....he told me "boot camp sucks, it's supposed to" and he was right. But it's only a few weeks and that is NOTHING for the opportunities it can give you throughout your life...your ENTIRE life. Not everyone gets to claim the title of Veteran......because not everyone had what it takes to be a Veteran. Not everyone has the courage to venture into the unknown with nothing but their confidence and courage to accompany them. Whether you stay for 4 years, or 30 years...it's something no one...NO ONE can take away from you. You will learn a great deal about other people and more importantly about yourself. It's an experience unlike any other. You can make life long friends that are more than friends....they are brothers and sisters....people who you KNOW are made of the tougher stuff. The story of YOUR life is YOURS to write....make it a good one.
Yes. But the recruiters will cheat to get ppl in. I've seen it happen. They'll write down higher numbers on push ups or sit ups and fudge the numbers on runs. Theyll say you'll get better in bootcamp. I guess they have a quota or something.
motown. Yes, they can, but I'm not talking about the recruiters, I'm talking directly to and about those that are thinking about joining. To the recruiters, you're a number, a billet, a quota they HAVE to make or they're going to hear about it. Take them out of the equation. If YOU are in good shape everything is easier. If you are in good shape getting dropped for what someone else did (and yes, it WILL happen) won't effect you as much. If you are in good shape you won't be running around "red-lined" all the time. Your stress level is going to be high enough in boot camp, especially in the first few weeks. Wouldn't it be nice to KNOW that pretty much no matter what they throw at you physically it's still not as tough as what you did to prepare yourself???? Look, the RDC's tailor what they do to most of the weaker people. If they did it to the level of the more fit people they would destroy the entire company so they build up to it. The RDC's have rules they have to adhere to as well. They can only drop you so many times for so many reps. My advice is to go into recruit training in decent or better than decent shape. If the recruiters want to write down higher numbers that's on them. But the folks who go in, in horrible shape are the one's who are going to pay the price in the long run....boot camp for them will be HELL.....at first. Why not avoid that altogether??? It's like a test you know you need to study for.....either put in the work/time or don't complain when you fail. If someone is thinking of joining or is in delayed entry, it only makes sense to workout....you will anyway in boot camp so avoid the soreness beforehand. Hey, do what you like, I went in, in really good shape and EVERYTHING was easier......EVERYTHING.
Or when you’d have that one guy at tap do his motivational speeches and everyone is screaming and running around and shit 😂. Or the “LOCK IT UP GENTALMEN” or “EARS! EARS! OPEN!” Got so annoying
Hahaha, every division had the motivational speeches guy! lol. "Lock it up" and "ears open" was some bullshit, but not as much as"TOELINE" every morning.
Thanks to boot camp and the Navy, I have been forged into an individual who is patient and resilient. I served for almost 10 years as an IC. Now I am a civilian and an RN. I could not be here if it wasn’t for the training I received and the hard times that I have endured.
Went to Great Lakes RTC in '87. Man is it so different now. Didn't train in running shoes, only for PT. Wore Boondocks with the Dungaree pants LOL. Our Division MASH sessions were a lot more intense than what they do now also. I think our first session after the "break in" period was about 4 hours more or less. Makes me wonder was it too intense then? Were they turning out to many recruits to go home or something? It was tough, I'm sure it still is. But it certainly is different than when I was there.
Wow... when I went to boot camp back in 1996, we didn't get life preservers for our swim qualification. You jump in and tread water for at least 10 minutes straight and THEN you can get out of the pool. Those sticks they were using to pull people out of the pool with,... well those were used to keep us in the pool until the time was up. Imagine being dead tired and you're swimming toward the edge of the pool to get out and then someone pushes you back in with that stick! Fury and rage is what happens next.
same here, when i went thru great lakes in 1988, we didn't have lifeboat drills, life preservers, or any of that jazz. you showed up in your navy swim trunks, jumped from what I believe was a 30 foot, not a ten foot tower, treaded water for ten minutes, and proved you could swim a few strokes- man has the Navy changed!

You could tell by their demeanor from the onset that one of the twin brothers was going to wash out - even before the updates about both of them being held back. RTC probably should have separated the two from the beginning.
These young boys and girls will soon metamorphosis into young men and women soon. In 1960 I was a young punk serving on two aircraft carriers. I soon learned what to do and do it right.
So right now, I'm in the process of joining the Navy, and I'm watching these videos to prepare. I'll admit, I was terrified of the water as a kid, and even today, I'm still a little worried about this swim test.But, I'll never overcome this fear unless I attack it, which I sure as hell will do.
Petty Officer Sperry reminds me of one of my Company Commanders from basic training at RTC San Diego back in 1983, Chief Dodge, he would yell , scream, get in your face the typical Drill instructor but he rarely ever gave out pushups or any other physical punishment, now The other Company Commander Chief Johnson Never raised his voice the entire time we were there but all he had to do was say “Down” and he would have us doing PT until we collapsed and were sucking air. As a fellow Seabee 1983-1989 I’m proud to see Petty Officer Sperry proudly wearing the Seabee Combat Warfare Badge. “We Build We Fight” “Can Do”

I went in 90 to Great Mistakes. Wearing boondockers running ladders for making a mistake, good times, lol. It sure looks different now. But I wish I got the firefighting and ropehandling experience this series showed. I would have loved that. It was just marching around, sleeping on your feet and trying to power through every day. I gained 15 lbs of muscle though.
You all just hang in there. You'll look back on it all with fond memories. And really it will be the easiest thing you do in the Navy. It's only a couple months vs. a deployment.

Join the Submarine Navy. No shave chits for every deployment. Of course you don't see the sun for months at a time, but hey, take the good with the bad.
A lot of black men (not exclusively) are this way..they get bumps from close shaving. You are still required to keep a neat beard and can't be over a certain length.

I was so scared when I was told that I might be separated. I was on P-4 when I was told. One of the scariest moments right there. But luckily someone else had my back and kept me in and I got to graduate and move on with my division. Been out for 3 months and almost hitting The Fleet

And the dude was like “it doesn’t matter that you didn’t know it’s a failure to report” but then I talked to a Captain that Monday and he was saying that the stuff they found didn’t even matter since none of it applied to me
Royal Naval basic training 10 weeks, more nuanced and more quieter. Eventually they will meet sailors from the Royal Navy, probably best if they avoid and competive drinking them... it would end well for them and will probably get messy
On quitting and getting kicked out, we lost a recruit on out P-1 Day. He acted out in medical check-in. He bragged about being institutionalized and said that he wanted to die the most painful death ever and then he was gonna come back and tell everyone how good it felt. He came walking by us with his seabag on. We asked him where he was going. He looked at us and said "Home." P-1 Day. Didn't make through his P-1 Day.
I was a head PO. It sounds important but it actually was. If you licked the head and got sick, I failed at my job, the head must be perfect. If you cannot swim, why the hell did you join the Navy? My dad flew from Knoxville to San Diego to see me graduate. I will remember that till the day I die. You will learn what freedom means because you will lose it. Uncle Sam now owns your ass.
At least this episode 4 is more reasonable. For those recruits who are separated, it doesn't mean that they are all bad. Some of them could have gone to the other training program (such as the FAST program for the recruits whose English is their second language) before being sent back to the regular RTC. It takes time for sure, but they will be more than ready before they get back to the actual RTC, so that unless they messed it all up, they should also be graduated like the other recruits.

Today is my daughter-in-law Aiyana's first day in Chicago and her first day at boot camp it's going to be tough for her but I know that she will succeed because now she is a RUE!!! She just married my son and went off to boot camp all in one week, she is a very brave and strong willed young lady. It is an honor as well as a blessing to have her as part of my family we all are so very proud of her she will make an awesome sailor YOU GO GIRL!!! We LOVE HER so very much and we are VERY PROUD OF HER!!! We appreciate all the men and women who serve in our armed forces and protect all of us Americans. I thank them ALL from the bottom of my heart for us to be able to sleep safely at night. Thank you and God bless each and every one of you!

Never thought I'd miss boot camp and it's been 10 years for me since I graduated.
OH, MY GOD...... If you're going to join the military, any branch of the military...you need, NEED to be in some type of shape. And no, "round" is not a shape when talking about the military. Push-ups, sit-ups, running, 8 count body builders, flutter kicks, superman's etc.... You should be able to do lots of each. If you know you're going to join, or if you're in DEP, work out. It's not a secret that the military boot camps use physical "reinforcement" (exercises) to both punish and get their point across. If you're in shape, EVERYTHING is easier....EVERYTHING. It's also one less thing to have to worry about. Learn your general orders....and don't "sort of" know them, don't "kind of" know them....KNOW THEM. Everything you can learn before you go will help you. Know the ranks, it's not that tough. If you're over-weight, lose the weight BEFORE you go or you're going to get "extra attention". The last thing you want is your DS, DI, or RDC's (I believe they call them now) undivided attention.
You should become a recruiter because I’m quite afraid of joining the Military and what you just said might have sparked something I repeat MIGHT
TL. Joining the military is a commitment a serious one....if you're even thinking about it, don't...DO NOT take it lightly. But I'll tell you this as someone who served for 10 years on active duty, the last 7 with the Marine Corps as an FMF Corpsman (to include combat), the military can change your life.....and change it for the better. Who you are NOW...doesn't matter, it's who you are in the service. If you do decide to join, take it seriously. As I said, work out BEFORE you go....and do it consistently. Be in shape, know your general orders, know the ranks. Know all you can before you get there. My recruiter was honest with me....he told me "boot camp sucks, it's supposed to" and he was right. But it's only a few weeks and that is NOTHING for the opportunities it can give you throughout your life...your ENTIRE life. Not everyone gets to claim the title of Veteran......because not everyone had what it takes to be a Veteran. Not everyone has the courage to venture into the unknown with nothing but their confidence and courage to accompany them. Whether you stay for 4 years, or 30 years...it's something no one...NO ONE can take away from you. You will learn a great deal about other people and more importantly about yourself. It's an experience unlike any other. You can make life long friends that are more than friends....they are brothers and sisters....people who you KNOW are made of the tougher stuff.
The story of YOUR life is YOURS to write....make it a good one.

Yes. But the recruiters will cheat to get ppl in. I've seen it happen. They'll write down higher numbers on push ups or sit ups and fudge the numbers on runs. Theyll say you'll get better in bootcamp. I guess they have a quota or something.
motown. Yes, they can, but I'm not talking about the recruiters, I'm talking directly to and about those that are thinking about joining. To the recruiters, you're a number, a billet, a quota they HAVE to make or they're going to hear about it. Take them out of the equation. If YOU are in good shape everything is easier. If you are in good shape getting dropped for what someone else did (and yes, it WILL happen) won't effect you as much. If you are in good shape you won't be running around "red-lined" all the time. Your stress level is going to be high enough in boot camp, especially in the first few weeks. Wouldn't it be nice to KNOW that pretty much no matter what they throw at you physically it's still not as tough as what you did to prepare yourself???? Look, the RDC's tailor what they do to most of the weaker people. If they did it to the level of the more fit people they would destroy the entire company so they build up to it. The RDC's have rules they have to adhere to as well. They can only drop you so many times for so many reps.
My advice is to go into recruit training in decent or better than decent shape. If the recruiters want to write down higher numbers that's on them. But the folks who go in, in horrible shape are the one's who are going to pay the price in the long run....boot camp for them will be HELL.....at first. Why not avoid that altogether??? It's like a test you know you need to study for.....either put in the work/time or don't complain when you fail. If someone is thinking of joining or is in delayed entry, it only makes sense to workout....you will anyway in boot camp so avoid the soreness beforehand. Hey, do what you like, I went in, in really good shape and EVERYTHING was easier......EVERYTHING.

Thanks to boot camp and the Navy, I have been forged into an individual who is patient and resilient. I served for almost 10 years as an IC. Now I am a civilian and an RN. I could not be here if it wasn’t for the training I received and the hard times that I have endured.
Went to Great Lakes RTC in '87. Man is it so different now. Didn't train in running shoes, only for PT. Wore Boondocks with the Dungaree pants LOL. Our Division MASH sessions were a lot more intense than what they do now also. I think our first session after the "break in" period was about 4 hours more or less. Makes me wonder was it too intense then? Were they turning out to many recruits to go home or something? It was tough, I'm sure it still is. But it certainly is different than when I was there.
It's also likely scaled back a bit for the camera. Don't wanna scare future recruits too much.
Orlando RTC: Put it this way - I went into boot camp in better shape than I was coming out of it.
Wow... when I went to boot camp back in 1996, we didn't get life preservers for our swim qualification. You jump in and tread water for at least 10 minutes straight and THEN you can get out of the pool. Those sticks they were using to pull people out of the pool with,... well those were used to keep us in the pool until the time was up. Imagine being dead tired and you're swimming toward the edge of the pool to get out and then someone pushes you back in with that stick! Fury and rage is what happens next.
I didn't get life preservers in 2006 either.
I went in December of last year and we didn’t get preservers either, and idk which “ship” their in either cus our racks weren’t that nice.
It’s a new thing in bootcamp called Abandon Ship. It’s different from the swim qualification

same here, when i went thru great lakes in 1988, we didn't have lifeboat drills, life preservers, or any of that jazz. you showed up in your navy swim trunks, jumped from what I believe was a 30 foot, not a ten foot tower, treaded water for ten minutes, and proved you could swim a few strokes- man has the Navy changed!

You could tell by their demeanor from the onset that one of the twin brothers was going to wash out - even before the updates about both of them being held back. RTC probably should have separated the two from the beginning.

So right now, I'm in the process of joining the Navy, and I'm watching these videos to prepare. I'll admit, I was terrified of the water as a kid, and even today, I'm still a little worried about this swim test.But, I'll never overcome this fear unless I attack it, which I sure as hell will do.

Petty Officer Sperry reminds me of one of my Company Commanders from basic training at RTC San Diego back in 1983, Chief Dodge, he would yell , scream, get in your face the typical Drill instructor but he rarely ever gave out pushups or any other physical punishment, now The other Company Commander Chief Johnson Never raised his voice the entire time we were there but all he had to do was say “Down” and he would have us doing PT until we collapsed and were sucking air.

I went in 90 to Great Mistakes. Wearing boondockers running ladders for making a mistake, good times, lol. It sure looks different now. But I wish I got the firefighting and ropehandling experience this series showed. I would have loved that. It was just marching around, sleeping on your feet and trying to power through every day. I gained 15 lbs of muscle though.

A lot of black men (not exclusively) are this way..they get bumps from close shaving. You are still required to keep a neat beard and can't be over a certain length.

I was so scared when I was told that I might be separated. I was on P-4 when I was told. One of the scariest moments right there. But luckily someone else had my back and kept me in and I got to graduate and move on with my division. Been out for 3 months and almost hitting The Fleet

And the dude was like “it doesn’t matter that you didn’t know it’s a failure to report” but then I talked to a Captain that Monday and he was saying that the stuff they found didn’t even matter since none of it applied to me

Royal Naval basic training 10 weeks, more nuanced and more quieter. Eventually they will meet sailors from the Royal Navy, probably best if they avoid and competive drinking them... it would end well for them and will probably get messy

On quitting and getting kicked out, we lost a recruit on out P-1 Day. He acted out in medical check-in. He bragged about being institutionalized and said that he wanted to die the most painful death ever and then he was gonna come back and tell everyone how good it felt. He came walking by us with his seabag on. We asked him where he was going. He looked at us and said "Home." P-1 Day. Didn't make through his P-1 Day.
I was a head PO. It sounds important but it actually was. If you licked the head and got sick, I failed at my job, the head must be perfect. If you cannot swim, why the hell did you join the Navy? My dad flew from Knoxville to San Diego to see me graduate. I will remember that till the day I die. You will learn what freedom means because you will lose it. Uncle Sam now owns your ass.
At least this episode 4 is more reasonable. For those recruits who are separated, it doesn't mean that they are all bad. Some of them could have gone to the other training program (such as the FAST program for the recruits whose English is their second language) before being sent back to the regular RTC. It takes time for sure, but they will be more than ready before they get back to the actual RTC, so that unless they messed it all up, they should also be graduated like the other recruits.
