I went to Navy bootcamp back in 2000. The most confusing part of training (and the time I got yelled at the most) happened during battle stations. There was a point where I thought I had cut my hand, so I simply looked at it to see if I had and it turned out that I hadn't. And whew did I get yelled at for that. The RDC got in my face and started yelling and demanded to know why I had looked at my hand. I just said that I thought I had cut it. So then the RDC asked if it was cut and I said no. This pissed off the RDC, who then promptly asked me then why the hell was I looking at my hand. To this day I've never been so confused in my life.

My best friend failed Battle Stations because his team kept fucking up ex: didn't check the door for heat, some people feel asleep in the head etc. But he was able to re-take Battle Stations with another Division and ended up passing the second time, then graduated. Crazy. He kept saying " 1 team 1 fight, one person fails, we all fail"

He will seem different when you first see him again, but the young man you know will still be in there and your personality and individuality comes back to the surface after training. He will grow into a better version of himself. You provided the solid and beautiful foundation and the Navy will build upon that. Bless you and your family.

I went through naval boot camp up in great lakes in the early 80`s. Every thing was the same yet different (weird looking racks) until day 4 when a really mellow senior chief came into our barracks . He asked politely if anyone was in band or choir in high school. I raised my hand because I played trumpet. He took me to his office with around 3 dozen other recruits and auditioned to make sure I could actually play. No problem I was 4th chair trumpet in a band with around 50 trumpets so I nailed it. Only 4 other trumpets passed including a recruit who joined the navy as musician( I was a machinist mate nuke) . I got moved to a different division of all recruits who played instruments. There were around 12 total of us in my new division and it was chill . We still had to pass all the physical tests, swimming and that awful gas chamber thing, but spent most of our time learning and practicing music for the graduation pass and review ceremony. Never held a gun or fired one (except for a photo session for some sort of year book kind of a thing). They called us triple threat and since we had a navy musician our CC rarely was around.

P.S. Battle Stations looks so much more impactful on a mock ship than it did 20 yrs ago when we ran around the base going station to station.

Battles stations was much harder back in 2006, we had to run to each area for every test, I still remember the circles we ran waiting for stragglers to catch up. I enjoyed this series, took me back to a lot of memories I forgot. Congrats to all the new sailors and all those joining the greatest navy in the world. -USN Veteran HM3

I’ve been in the navy going on 2 years and man, this was motivating as hell. I loved this series and it reminds me of what I had to go through to be where i am now. I honestly struggled through boot camp, but I made it. True but I think if it was simplified down to the most popular rate or the hardest rate to qualify for, along with only covering a certain portion of it, sort of like an "A-School Teaser" idea then they'd have no problem getting it done

I can only speak for myself here, but the IT A-School was pretty boring. LOL

Caos The hardest A school? So nuke school? No one would watch a bunch of dorks studying nuclear physics for 16 hours a day and then contemplating suicide later.

Since my son joined the boot camp in Great Lakes, I have full understanding of what sacrifice it takes for our sailors to become the "silent defenders" of our country. Let's keep them all in our prayers everyday.

i think this should become a yearly series. when future recruits and U.S. sailors look back 5-10- maybe even a 100 years from now it would be nice if you could look up the year of your enlistment and see how much you and the navy has grown.

Battle Stations, I'll never forget that night. One of the longest nights of my entire life. You would think by the end of it you're ready to drop dead on the spot from sleep deprivation, but actually I felt really good the next morning when it was over

Battlestations is different now then when I completed it back in 2005. We ran everywhere across the base, kneeling every time before and after each station. My knees were so worn out from running and kneeling, I could barely walk after we were done. I miss the Navy. Wish I could go back.

I pushed recruits at Great Lakes from late 94 to 98 Battlestations was done starting in the middle of the night, and we, as RDC"s had to double time with the recruits all around the base to various buildings and events. Could never figure out why we had to run with them, they are expected to be self sufficient at this point, with RPOC as their leader. Different Navy these days I guess, one building for most events? Kudos for making it through!!!

I ran those battle stations in 2006, few years later I heard they brought in the ship that was done all in one spot. Nothing like running all night in-between each event. Hooyah!

Good to see the teamwork concept in play and as you can see the Navy has eight weeks to remove individuality, foster a team method and graduate.... I graduated on a Friday and spent the next week “out processing”. Turning in gear, setting up transportation to schools etc.....
