  • Before the Vietnam War was illegally and secretively extended into Cambodia, the country was ruled by a popular liberal monarch, who kept Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge at bay. However as American bombing of the Ho Chi Minh trailer expanded indiscriminately , more and more Cambodians were driven into the arms of the revolutionaries.

    Cambodia is a nation split between the past and the future; tending to the savage wounds wrought upon its people by the Khmer Rouge, whilst preparing for a bright future through a young and determined new generation. This deep and incisive portrait of a vibrant and bustling country moves through verdant hills, ancient stone steps and swarming metropolises to reveal a past full of violence and pain, but also a future of hope and expectation.

      It cost Vietnam a hefty price. Because of the war with Pol Pot at that time, we were embargoed until 1990.
      The economy was devastated. Both China and USA supported Pol Pot at that time. Presently, Cambodian hate Vietnamese while young Vietnamese believe if Pol Pot did not kill Vietnamese at the border, we would not have to be there and we would have left Cambodian to deal with Pol Pot by themselve.

      @@phong0210Now pal, you got this part of history wrong. Cambodia was literally off the map during our genocide. No one can come to our country, no one can get out of the country unless you sneak out but the chance was very slim. A huge part of people was killed because they were suspected of being CIA spies or a spy in general. So it ridiculous to have support from China and the USA. If we talked about which countries that help started it then it china, the U.S and Vietnam and the Vietnam War were a big part of it.
      Our side of the history told us that toward the end of the genocide, the Khmer Rouge started to get paranoid at everything so they killed many Vietnamese near the border. Don't forget some of the survivors in Cambodia are also the perpetrators who participate in the genocide. They know what going on. That why despite what you guys did, we still has a strong prejudice against you guys.

      The US killed about 6 million people in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Vietnam invaded Cambodia to stop the "killing fields" triggered by US actions; and installed a new Govt. Despite this, the US still recognised Pol Pot as the "legitimate leader" for many years afterwards. US Policies have NOTHING to do with democracy or human rights - they are about access of US Capital & control of other countries natural resources -- what is good for US Corporations and business. False, up to that point they had tolerated the genocide and even sought good relations with the Khmer Rouge. A revealing question .... Who supported Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge to the bitter end ?
    # First, it's China - Directing, encouraging and supporting them to wipe Cambodia clean of Cambodians, making it ready for Chinese advisors, soldiers, workers, and settlers to flood in and turn it into another XinJiang (a China's conquered province)
    # Next, USA - Supporting and using Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge (plus prodding Deng XiaoPing's China) to exact revenge on the Vietnamese who had dared to shoot down their B52s and kick the American new colonialists who were taking on the mantle of the French old colonialists, out of their country Vietnam
    # Then, Thailand, Singapore, .... - Lackeys following orders from the USA (and from China's in the case of Singapore)
    # Lastly, UK, Australia, .... - USA's vassals.

      The point where the US and allies started "supporting" the KR is when China convinced Sihanouk to join forces with KR again to form a "coalition gov" to oppose Vietnam, and support was given to this coalition.
      The KR genocided near all ethnic Chinese people in Cambodia, they loved Mao and the PRC, but your characterization of their intention to make a new Chinese colony is completely false

At the end the North Vietnamese broke their promise after they defeated the south vietnam and the Khmer Rounge attacked South Vietnam to take back what was once a part of cambodia. The North Vietnamese used to be backed by China but they betrayed china and went to the Russians for Help . The russians gave the North Vietnamese weapons to then fight back against the khmer rounge army backed by china. After the North Vietnamese defeated the Khmer Rouge, they went to the capital of cambodia phenom penh and change all the street names into vietnamese names. The red cross sent in food and aid to help the cambodian families that were free after pol pot's army left the fields but the north vietnamese took the food and aid and kept it for themselve leaving many cambodians to starve to death along the roads for 2 or 4 years. Cambodia is in a similar boat. We don't understand their culture, so why pretend to make good decisions for them? Nixon and Kissinger failed to make any good decisions for this country or its people. Even those two countries suffered a political and intellectual genocide shortly before each started on its down fail. Vietnam in around 1945-6 and Cambodia in around 1947. Any threat to those in charge were expelled or eliminated. I that's why the best and brightest lawyers, doctors, professors, engineers, and other common sense people are always rounded up first! Oh yes, they take any guns before that! Then there is no opposition and they will rule however they please! Americans missed that simple point. We could have helped Vietnam in 1945 and NOT sided with France. She was totally wrong and so were we for backing any pre war colonial power claiming it had to have its Indo- China colonies! We were very stupid. French should have been forced to stay out of Cambodia to allow it to recover from WWII. Since we didn't, there was a price to pay and the people of those two countries paid a very high price! US Military forget all lessons that should have been learned. We used to fight like the Native American's, then we forgot that! We learned how to defeat army's much bigger than us, then we forgot that (North against the South)!

For example, during the UN General Assembly (september 1979) USA and other "democratic" countries voted in favor of overthrown Pol Pot to keep him in power as a legitimate Cambodia ruler... Also British military trained Khmer rouge militia after 1979.

    Well a complicating factor here about assigning blame to the United States for the rise of the Khmer Rouge is the Khmer Rouge themselves. As the former ruler of Cambodia once observed about the US bombings, "they (the US) might be bombing in Cambodia but they they are not killing any Cambodians." The areas of the Ho Chi Minh trail the the NVA used to transport men and weapons into South Vietnam were very sparcely populated - many of these areas were almost completely devoid of Cambodians - which is exactly why the NVA used them. A more direct culprit that really gave rise to Pol Pot and his regime were the NVA and China, who directly supported the communist movement in Cambodia and used the Khmer Rouge as a proxy force to keep pressure on the Nuetralist Cambodian government so it didn't directly support the US or the ARVN. These people who always are so keen to "blame America first" for everything often totally discount what the communists were doing themselves in Cambodia and Laos and often don't even care enough to learn what the communists did after they came to power in both countries and how this affected the lives of millions of South East Asian people. These "blame America first" types seem only intent at laying the responsibility at the feet of America and they completely avoid assigning any agency to the South East Asian people or the Communists themselves. This is why I have such antipathy towards communists and their supporters: they are nothing more then ideologically-motivated slave-drivers who pave their own way to hell with their own good intentions and all the bodies of those they've "liberated."

      Exactly, the US and ARVN didn’t start intervening in Cambodia until the NVA and VC started using the country as a base for supporting their war against the South Vietnamese. The regime in Hanoi was happy to support the Khmer Rouge so long as they were against US/South Vietnamese interests. I am not saying that our government didn’t do stupid things in SEA, but blaming us for the Khmer’s rise to power is wrong.

    • @MathewLengyel-ov2dd
      @MathewLengyel-ov2dd 3 месяца назад +1

      @@usauk3605 The stupidest thing the U.S. ever did in SEA was to leave and surrender South Vietnam, Laos & Cambodia to the lunacy of Chinese Communism. What happened in each country after the “liberation” of Saigon in 1975 is proof of that. Millions of people died after the fighting ended, tens of millions were imprisoned, the Hmong & the Montenyard were persecuted from their lands, chemical weapons were used to drive religious minorities off their lands and the horror show has not ended. Our biggest mistake was to leave and surrender these people to the Chinese Communists.

    • @usauk3605
      @usauk3605 3 месяца назад

      @MatthewLengyel Yes, I agree. After millions and millions of dollars and thousands of lives lost, to pull out the way we did was stupid. We abandoned the South Vietnamese, which is, as you say, the only thing we should really be ashamed of. We gave away our advantage in airpower because LBJ was worried about “offending” Hanoi. You know, because we were only at war with them, no reason why we should be enemies. I guess that was what I meant earlier when I said our government did stupid things, basically compromising our ability to win the war.

    Cambodia were at war alone against the two invader country (siam and vietnamese) losing motherland of Cambodia *bangkok and prey nokor (saigon/ho chi minh city)* for many century until colonial era in 1800's, without the help of the French and English empires the native people of Cambodia would have lost the whole nation that we see on the map modern present day of the Khmer Empire. the follow up of japan NAZI invasion in 1940's and the vietmese Communist in 1960's destroyed the nation killing and executing almost all the Native population and stealing gold bank, piastre and dollar economy system. massive illegal immigration in the region. Cambodia rich history to remember.

    I've always said.... the genius of American democracy is that it balances acts of horror and terror, almost equally, with acts of innovation, cleverness, slight of hand, and compassion...., that is why we and practically everyone else on this planet see the USA as 'essentially'...., a great nation (based on how humans define greatness)....and good for the world....., genius....,

      Our country was meant never to interfere with other countries goes against our sovereignty and founding principles by our founding fathers. The government that caused this is a shadow government that was never meant to be how our nation was created.

    The Khmer Rouge wanted to create an ethnically pure state. Anybody who wasn't pure Khmer blood was murdered even though Pol Pot, himself , was mixed Chinese blood just like Hitler was allegedly of mixed Jewish blood.

    Please, please .... pause, and calmly, honestly, impartially think ....
    # Without the Vietnamese coming to RESCUE them (Cambodian people) from the barbaric GENOCIDE perpetrated by Pol Pot under direction of his expansionist Chinese mentors-masters, and to SHARE with them their (Vietnamese people's and soldiers') meager food rations while they (the Vietnamese soldiers) themselves were close to starvation, there would not be many Cambodians left in Cambodia now (let alone a Cambodia BURSTING WITH LIFE today). Instead, Cambodia would have been completely filled with Chinese advisers, soldiers (coming to rescue Pol Pot) and colonizers, turning Cambodia into another Xin-Jiang (of the Uyghur people, but now a conquered province of China), but a new Xin-Jiang without any Cambodians left (wiped out by the China-directing-Pol_Pot-executing genocide)
    # Also, please, please .... pause, and calmly, honestly, impartially think ....
    # Around 1979, Vietnam was still an UTTER RUIN after the devastating liberation war to win back their independence against the MOST MIGHTY power on earth, the neo-colonialist USA. The Vietnamese were rock-bottom poor and very, very close to FAMINE, due to the US Administration's total embargo and encirclement of Vietnam, exacting vile REVENGE on the Vietnamese for having dared to shoot down their B52s and kick them out of their country Vietnam.
    # The mighty USA combined with mighty China's expansionist ruler Deng Xiao-Ping, combining with the maniacal, genocidal Pol Pot, all savagely attacking Vietnam. Please, just pause and imagine, USA-China-Pol_Pot combination to attack the rock-bottom poor and near starvation Vietnam !
    # They wanted Vietnam DEAD !
    # But Vietnam refused to die, saved itself, and saved the Cambodian people as well.
