In other words, "This album was a solid okay. The stories in the album were good, except for where I didn't really pay attention to them. Not enough yelling."
Anthony, listen to it again. I struggled with this album the first few listens as well. But it gets better the more I listen to it. A quality of what I find to be the albums that really stand the test of time. And I think this is the first stage in the band's evolution into a place where they can very easily blend between the mellow folly stuff and then back into the heavier stuff seamlessly. The dynamics of this album are what make it great. And I feel like they are still flashing out what they are trying to do. And what it means to be mewithoutYou. I can listen to this album front to back without being unhappy at any point. Solid 9.
I just got into this album today, and I am loving it. I did not like it much when it first came out. Took years for me to get around to it, but its a very rich and dense album.
I saw these guys when they toured with Touché Amouré and Aaron's passion overshadows so much of the "flaws" in Ten Stories. Lyrically, I think this album expanded into more universal ideas, such as the most prevalent, gospel story. I'd say 7.
Bears vision is one of my favorite mwy songs. This album takes some time but there's really not a "bad " song on it. I think they found a good medium in between brothers and it's all crazy that in my opinion works really well. Mwy grows with every album and a lot of people are expecting another a/b or catch us when they've moved way beyond that. Not that those albums didn't rock but it was also ten years ago. I feel like I've literally grown through my 20s with this band. I personally like the changes that were made and am excited to see whats next. I'd give it a strong 8/10
Dang man. It really sucks to know people cant experience this album like have. I mean, if I could have you experience it like I have, I would, because Im always thinking about it and always craving to just come back to the emotion of it. These stories are my favorite out of any of the albums, just because there are lives or characters with beautiful and dark subterranean aspects created. I mean, each song is a fable, a satire, skimming across the surface of man with these tattered animals.
Read up on Derridean post-structuralism and Hegelian self-identity in light of community (or lack thereof). Your mind will be blown. This is absolutely the most lyrically impressive LP they have released, as it implements these philosophies in a perfectly overarching allegory that emphasizes longevity of characterization not seen in earlier mwY releases.
After one listen, I didn't know what to think, but listening to it in one sitting for the second time, I've come around to really admiring this album. I've been a huge mwY fan since A-B Life and this seems like a satisfying middle-ground between the old and the new. I can fully respect their ventures into new sounds or ideas and I think this album continues that exploration with beautiful reminicence of previous albums. It reminds me of Catch for Us the Foxes in terms of musical style in a way
I feel like it is a lot more subtle than their previous albums and requires deeper reading which may or may not be a strength. I find it incredibly engaging.
I'm really happy you reviewed this album, Mewithoutyou has been a favorite of mine for years and I always feel like they go overlooked because they don't really settle with one genre or crowd too well. As far as this album goes, I wish it had those disturbing realizations they had in earlier albums, like you said, but I also feel like that comes from the band being older now and their life experiences probably dont have that pure adolescent frustration brewing quite as much.
There were a couple songs on this album that I didn't even enjoy until I understood the context of the lyrics and started listening to the whole album all at once every time I listened to them. Both of those things made me fall in love with this album. Light 9.
THANK YOU ANTHONY. This is why I love your channel. I probably never would of discovered a lot of the bands you have reviewed. So refreshing to find out there is so much fantastic music out there waiting to be discovered
I can see where you're coming from, but I have to disagree. I've listened to this album 5 times since picking it up the day before yesterday, and it's safe to say I'm loving it. I'm giving it at least an 8.
I don't know this should get at least an 8. I find these songs to be memorable, and go through with such a distinct progression, as each story takes shape putting all the pieces together. Maybe the lyrics aren't as personable because its more about the concept of it all, and the animals tales. I find that whole idea so neat. Just my opinion I suppose...
It's always awesome when Anthony actually reviews a band I know :3 Also, look into the new Slugabed LP coming out on the 15th, Time Team. I love his last EP, and am really pumped for the new one.
I agree with you about the change in the lyrics, they are definitely not as painful and powerful as their older albums; but I don't mind it, I think regardless of how much power there is in them, Aaron Weiss is creating a fascinating world. Especially in Fox's Dream-- I've never heard a song with such imagery. All the songs, basically, are like that... super surreal, not very true-to-life, but still so interesting that it's like experiecing a really strange dream. I loved Ten Stories for that.
Mewithoutyou is my favorite band, so I'm obviously quite biased towards them, but when I think about Ten Stories, I must agree with this review. I am, however, madly in love with Brother, Sister. It has been my favorite album of all time for quite a while now.
Really liked your review probably because all your opinions mirrored my own.. literally everything from the Jacob's ladder quote, to the underwhelming nature of this disk, to the backtracking opinions of their past albums and styles. You sir have earned my respect for your editing and analytical thought process! One odd thing I've noticed of mwY is that I yearn to love their music til I truly love their music but it always depends on how much passion is in a song for its re-listen-ability.
I'm pretty sure that this was right there with Brother, Sister and Foxes. I can't really choose between any of them, they're all great in different aspects.
Wow. You really know your stuff. I love the band mewithoutYou, and have really been delving into the background behind a lot of their lyrics (such as Bawa Muhaiyaddeen and the background for Ten Stories). Aaron is such an intellectual, and it's easy to see how his studies and background have driven his lyrics, from Ten Stories all the way back. This album was definitely more focused on the story and less on Aaron personally - I don't think it's fair to look at this album and expect it to be like their old ones considering they went into the creative process with a different end goal. While everything you said about their discography was on point, this one should be categorized more with It's All Crazy than Brother, Sister on back. This album in particular, I find the lyrics a little difficult to appreciate. I love the overall story line, and like you said it's a very arc driven story, but because of the flowery language it can be difficult to understand the big picture at times. I definitely about February 1878, Elephant in the Dock, Bears Vision of St Agnes, and All Circles. By far the best on the album. I think I cared more about the overall story and let that affect my decision. 7.5/10 for me.
Haven't listened to Mewithoutyou since Brother, Sister in 2006. Catch For Us The Foxes is one of my favorite high school albums of all time. Glad to see this band is still making music. An outstanding live band with an eccentric and quirky frontman. Gave this album a listen on Spotify, and still more of the same from the band(which isnt necessarily a bad thing). Felt like I never stopped listening to them. Nothing out of the ordinary here, but a fun album. Thanks Anthony.
Really liked the track you linked to. Will definitely check out more of this band's discography, if not much more of their newest album. Thanks for the review.
Mewithoutyou is absolutely my number 1 band. 'Catch for us' and 'Brother, Sister' are far and away my favorite albums. 'It's All Crazy' is interesting because even though the previously mentioned are my top albums, 'Crazy' has 3 or 4 of my favorite individual songs (Fox/Crow, Beetle King, etc). '10 Stories' I like more as an album than 'Crazy' but none of the songs live up to anything from previous albums (for me at least).
Anthony, do you prefer a band that lets their style flow from album to album with reminders to their previous works happen, or would you rather have a band stick to one style and hone it to its perfection?
From a musical perspective they're equal for me. I love both albums to death but the maturity and pure REAL emotion that's put into Wildlife has never been matched by anything I've heard. I'd love to hear why you like it more, I've followed La Dispute since Vancouver and Wildlife is my favorite thing they've released. I'm really hoping for a Here, Hear IV this year.
Could you review Motor City by Sand Circles? I stumbled upon it yesterday and loved it, but definitely found some flaws. It was released somewhere in April, so I hope that is recent enough.
I talked to Aaron about 6 months ago when I saw them and asked him about the album and he said he was actually having a really hard time writing some of the words. He said they had already written all the music, but he was struggling to come up with words for some of the songs. I feel like that probably had a lot to do with the unusual lack of conviction in his singing/speaking/yelling. Overall I thought it was a good album. They're one of my favorite bands but I agreed with everything you said
Goo review. I agree that it was not the best album. The songs on Other Stories, an ep that came with the deluxe edition of this album, was worth checking out. Songs on there are "Four Fires" and "Julian the Onion". They are both worth listening to. I did not really like "Cardiff Giant" that much, but there are a lot of other songs I really like. I think the reason that the tracks are less depressing is because of what A.W. said about trying to avoid the feeling and be more happy in his songs.
The album took awhile to grow on me, that's for damn sure. Felt pretty much the way you describe for the first few listens, but I've come to appreciate a lot more in the past week. Good review brah, you just got a new subscriber ;)
For me, it seemed like mewithoutYou was trying to progress musically with this album, but they had no idea where they were going. I am a hardcore mewithoutYou fan, but I was pretty disappointed. They ended up sounding almost like everybody else, and not themselves. However, there were like you said, a pocket-full of great songs; my favorites being Aubergine, Fox's Dream... and Circles.
id say ten stories gets a heavy 8. There are about 3 or 4 songs i relisten to. he could have gone deeper but more is comming, the man is a boss. Love you arron!
im also a super mewtithoutYou fan, and in my honest opinion i would say your score is pretty fair, although i feel that what aaron was trying to accomplish is a more metaphoric way to enter into this mystery that is music combined with meaning. one of the songs that i really dont know why its in the album is fiji mermaid, it feels like a song that the band recycled over the past albums.
i love the new album but im a fan of all the genres they pull together so the folkiness doesn't bother me but i see what you mean by the album coming off just middle of the road. review the new silversun pickups, please!
Didn't really like most of this album that much; didn't think it was inherently bad, but was just underwhelmed. I did however enjoy Nine Stories and the opener February, 1878.
For me, Catch For Us The Foxes is MewithoutYou's best album. Aaron's vocals are at their most raw and desperate, every track blows me away time and time again. I love Brother Sister but I've always been a punk rock fan, and Aaron's vocals don't feel quite as passionate as they were on CFUTF. Maybe that's just me though.
I would personally give it a 8 or 9. I absolutely love this album, but sometimes the lyrics can be hard to decipher. Its not their best(that was Brothers, Sisters or Foxes), but it is definitely their fourth best album. But the problem is that Brothers, Foxes, Stories, and Crazy are pretty much at the same level, and only differ on my mood.
While I disagree with a lot of what you said as someone who lives and breathes this band, you certainly made a case and never sounded like a douche doing it. Standing only on the merits of SOUND alone, I think this is easily my favorite release by them since Catch For Us the Foxes - and after listening to February 1878 and Fox's Dream I was reminded how desperately I missed CFUTF and A-->B. Only 2 songs on this album do I skip over when listening, and thats the best ratio since Foxes.
Id love to give this album a 7 but I must agree with the strong six. If I could though give honorable mention to fox dream of a log flume, that has been the track I've been waiting to hear for years. Arron's true tale of heartbreak and understanding for most of mewithoutyou's material.
I feel like Aaron Weiss' lyrics on this album are very similar to that of Bob Dylan's off Blonde on Blonde. Its a very surreal fictitious metaphor sometimes very condescending. But the difference being Dylan offered a lot of himself in Blonde on Blonde whereas Aaron is completely out of the story. this album could have been a 9 if Aaron would have his personal feelings towards the situations in the album. But Catch For Us The Foxes is a "10". a good 3/4 of the songs on that album make me cry.
i'm sorry guys, i love this band as much as the next guy (probably way more than the next guy, Brother, Sister has been my all-time favorite album since it came out and is nearing 800 plays on my itunes and still gives me shivers when i listen to it) but this album really isn't that great compared to any of their other albums. its got a couple good tracks, and a bunch of really bland forgettable tracks. most of the passion from any of their other releases just feels like its missing here. 6/10 is a fair score.
I pulled this up and was looking at your page for a new video in another tab. I just closed your tab and now I'm seeing this comment. I guess that means you need to upload a new video (like you said on Twitter).
2012 is really moving slow in music...its so many let downs that's why I can't wait for the dirty projectors swing Lo megellan album...SLM,beach house and big Krit will definetly be the highlight of this year
Wildlife was straight up one of the best albums written in this generation. Like, I love mewithoutYou, a lot. but Wildlife... hard to beat. Probably won't ever be beaten in the post-hardcore realm, in my opinion.
I feel the album is more personal, but not in a blatant self defining way. sort of a feeling that a persons soul is completely exposed when they are telling a story, and i feel i get to know Aaron in a light i've never seen before.
I first heard about mewithoutYou though Hayley Williams (lead singer of Paramore)'s website, so I decided to check out this LP the day it came out. I agree with you Anthony, it was very bland. And with me, coming from Kentucky, there's a lot of folk-rock bands here, so you can tell I was bored with this LP.
Each person responds to lyrics differently given how much thought Aaron weiss puts into his lyrics, these aren't just stories about animals with a moral. That's just the wall paper for a amazing deep message about humans leaving and returning to God. This a piece of art. Not an album in my opinion. Again I respect everyone's opinion. But try listening to it again in order and really analyze the lyrics. It seems apparent to me
I very much agree with you. I just don't feel as emotionally moved, the story just doesn't get me. I had such great expectations, but it did seem hollow to me :/
for me this album is a solid 10
Fox's Dream of the Log Flume is by far my favorite mewithoutYou song
In a sweater poorly knit!
In other words, "This album was a solid okay. The stories in the album were good, except for where I didn't really pay attention to them. Not enough yelling."

David Birowski I concur
Jeremy Bursich did you hear? New album this fall.
David Birowski Noooooo, that's awesome! I can't wait.
Jeremy Bursich me either. There's a preview on RUclips. Check it out and get stoked.
Thanks David Birowski
I just got into this album today, and I am loving it. I did not like it much when it first came out. Took years for me to get around to it, but its a very rich and dense album.
Michael Hand I give you a thumbs up for the Rothbard portrait.
la dispute listens to mewithoutyou, dude. it's not the other way. :-P
Facts
This guy was wrong...
Catch for us the Foxes was my favorite album they released.
14 year anniversary release today!
If this LP only gets a 6 with you, what the fuck gets a 10?
death grips only
+Jeffrey Dotson Also from the future to say the Blacker the Berry

One of the best albums of 2012, def in the top 5

i might do a short audio review, but i'm not sure. no real plans to review it at the moment. so many other things i wanna review. :-)
It's always awesome when Anthony actually reviews a band I know :3
Also, look into the new Slugabed LP coming out on the 15th, Time Team. I love his last EP, and am really pumped for the new one.
This is the most on point review I have ever read/seen on not only this LP but the band as a whole.
honestly I think this is their best post-Brother, Sister LP
I agree with you about the change in the lyrics, they are definitely not as painful and powerful as their older albums; but I don't mind it, I think regardless of how much power there is in them, Aaron Weiss is creating a fascinating world. You should review some Fugazi for your next classics week. You've had Red Machine lingering in the background in a few videos before.
Anthony, the opening skits are gold! Stick with em man
From a musical perspective they're equal for me. I love both albums to death but the maturity and pure REAL emotion that's put into Wildlife has never been matched by anything I've heard. I'd love to hear why you like it more, I've followed La Dispute since Vancouver and Wildlife is my favorite thing they've released. I'm really hoping for a Here, Hear IV this year.
glad to hear you like it. : -)
Could you review Motor City by Sand Circles? I stumbled upon it yesterday and loved it, but definitely found some flaws. It was released somewhere in April, so I hope that is recent enough.
glad to see these guys getting some requests. i may review it. :-)
good point.
This is my favourite album of all time!
Oh hey Thomas Gore from Balloon Shop, fancy seeing you in the comment section on a Needle Drop video.
I talked to Aaron about 6 months ago when I saw them and asked him about the album and he said he was actually having a really hard time writing some of the words.
Thank you for reviewing this album, I recently checked these guys out because of you review and really enjoy their music.
The album took awhile to grow on me, that's for damn sure. Felt pretty much the way you describe for the first few listens, but I've come to appreciate a lot more in the past week. Good review brah, you just got a new subscriber ;)
no time?
I'll still check it out. I loved the direction they went on the last one, and Aaron usually has some true gems lyrically.
For me, it seemed like mewithoutYou was trying to progress musically with this album, but they had no idea where they were going. I am a hardcore mewithoutYou fan, but I was pretty disappointed. happy 4 u, bro.
I think discography run-down (not quite reviews) would be really cool kinda like you did before the review of the new album
id say ten stories gets a heavy 8. There are about 3 or 4 songs i relisten to. he could have gone deeper but more is comming, the man is a boss. Love you arron!
planning on it. : -)

@theneedledrop you didnt like Grist for the Malady Mill? By far their most accessible/pop song to date but so well done.
Didn't know you listened to mewithoutYou, Anthony! I didn't even know the album was out. I'll check it out tonight!
Ab-Soul - Control System

never knew these guys existed, thank you so much they are epic
Hey Anthony would you consider making top 10 film OSTs?
Cheers!

I'd like to hear your opinion on the new Silversun Pickups
When will you be reviewing the new El-P album Cancer for Cure?
Thank you for reviewing this album! It was great to hear what you thought of it.
The new Cribs LP is doing really well over here in the UK if it takes your fancy : )
catch for us the foxes>its all crazy> brother sister> ten stories> a to b
but I love them all
when he said brother, sister was their best album I knew why we disagree on everything
Hey, just wondering, are you ever going to review Alabama Shakes - Boys & Girls?
I think you should review the new Silversun Pickups and Every Time I Die album.
Thanks Anthony means a lot, one of my favorite bands.
i'm sorry guys, i love this band as much as the next guy (probably way more than the next guy, Brother, Sister has been my all-time favorite album since it came out and is nearing 800 plays on my itunes and still gives me shivers when i listen to it) but this album really isn't that great compared to any of their other albums. its got a couple good tracks, and a bunch of really bland forgettable tracks. most of the passion from any of their other releases just feels like its missing here. 6/10 is a fair score.
1. Here We Go Magic
2. Beach House (which I'm sure you'll review anyway)
Thanks, yo.
Please review Plant a Tree's Jumbngle EP. It's sampled-based music without mercy.
Hey Anthony, how's it going? I haven't heard from you in awhile.... what's been good?
you think they're into the same formulas again and again? explain.
Half the album was pretty great, the other half were boring and underwhelmed...
Great songs:
February, Grist, Fox's, Nine Stories, Bear's Vision
Shadows Fall- Fire from the Sky, i know its not out but the full album leaked.
I pulled this up and was looking at your page for a new video in another tab. I just closed your tab and now I'm seeing this comment. I guess that means you need to upload a new video (like you said on Twitter).
2012 is really moving slow in music...its so many let downs that's why I can't wait for the dirty projectors swing Lo megellan album...SLM,beach house and big Krit will definetly be the highlight of this year
These guys remind me of La Dispute a bit, the whole raw vocals, pure emotion, and story telling.
Wildlife was straight up one of the best albums written in this generation. Like, I love mewithoutYou, a lot. but Wildlife... hard to beat. Probably won't ever be beaten in the post-hardcore realm, in my opinion.
What's that album on the shelf today?
It seems apparent to me
Silversun Pickups- Neck of the Woods review please?
Shackleton - Music For The Quiet Hour / The Drawbar Organ EPs
I very much agree with you. I just don't feel as emotionally moved, the story just doesn't get me. I had such great expectations, but it did seem hollow to me :/
