Speargun building comes in all different flavors and styles, such as this diy homemade speargun with a flair of fancy, an open track spear gun. This video details how to build a wooden speargun for shallow water spearfishing and this is how I made this first diy spearfishing gun utilizing a variety of woodworking techniques, a true homemade spear gun. This homemade speargun is by no means an expert project and through this video I document how to make a spear gun step by step. In this spear gun build, I utilized the Neptonics reef trigger mechanism in this video that incorporates diy speargun parts and ultimately shows a spearfishing gun with reel. This diy speargun is entirely crafted from local Indian rosewood. However, the principles are very basic in this simple homemade speargun. I show you how to make a speargun handle through power carving a basic, ergonomic, diy speargun handle.
The finishing products were supplied and sponsored by Mas Epoxies. Those included a three stage process of penetrating epoxy, 2:1 epoxy, and Bristol Finish Urethane top coat. Those three finishes allow any diy maker to safely finish a home made spear gun in their shop. The diy spear gun may appear to be intimidating, but this simple spear gun make is far from daunting with only a few specialized tools necessary. Most of principles on how to make a spear gun from wood, are basic wood working joinery techniques, such as draw bore mortise and tenon, that are elementary. At the end of the day I hope this video on how to make a wooden speargun inspires you build and move outside of your comfort zone and try a new project such as this easy speargun diy.

good job,i was curious to try to use it
Did you sell spearguns?
Thank you very much 😊👌💫💫
Ok
Keren om kulo saja saya punyak uang pingginnya pesan om😂😂
Nice to watch someone with the proper tools who knows how to use them.
Thank you!
Great book for a beginner . ruclips.net/user/postUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ this book really starts from the beginning, as in it explains what basic tools are and how to use them. But when it gets to the art of creating joints and how and when to use them this book really starts to teach you something. At least that was my experience.
It’s been a few years but I want to say I did between eight and ten.
Thanks for sharing - good tips & processes.
Thank you!
Awesome man. I've been a woodworker for the past 11 years and lived in key west for the past 14 years. I've been living in Fort Lauderdale for the past year, just decided to make a speargun as a gift and saw your video. Good work
Nice. I’m in Fort Lauderdale too. Welcome.
I can cook, I can work on cars , trucks , boats,
I can paint , fish and love a woman with my hands ..... but damn a man that can use his hands to build something like that is honestly admirable
Haha appreciate ya.
Simple, beautiful speargun ❤
hello from iraq with you well done
Thank you!
I made a speargun out of wood with simple tools, but you have very complete tools for make a spear gun. ,, from indonesia
It’s just a different approach. Most of the speargun videos require a router table and specific end mill bits. I did this primarily with a table saw and a drill press. A majority of the other tools are optional.
Fantastic thanks
Thank you!
Thank you guy C D C W ; for English speaking, I has been watched Indonesain guy for 2 years I don't understand what they said, but I watched what they doing by my eye is the translator not the language at all , so you speak English explain very well because we are speak English thank s again 👍👍.
You’re welcome!
Very nice,
Thanks!
The speargun turned out so beautiful!
Thanks Bruce! You can text me notes on the edit too. 😉
The process of making spearguns like this requires high skill & patience, you are indeed creative, greetings from Indonesia.
Thank you!
Nice speargun 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🤩🤩🤩
Thank you!
Liked, subed, and now commented
You’re the goat. Thank you.
Nice
❤️
bro just saw this sg build cant wait to show my gpa this video hes a carpenter and wood works been talking about doing this build for a while i missed where hard wear came from trigger line release mechanical gonna play your video to for several people hope the views help to show my thanks for a perfect wood shop project for me and gpa
It’s the reef mechanism from Neptonics! Glad you like it.
Cool!!
Ha thanks Steve. That’s definitely an oldie but a goodie.
So beautifull speargun i have seen before , big fan from #INDONESIA_EASTJAVA_BANYUWANGI .
#JUSTMYBIGESSDREAM to have speargun like you 🥲
Thank you!
Hello Im from indonesia 🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩
Some great points regarding cleaning the timber before gluing. Nice work
Thank you sir!
Excellent craftsmanship 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you sir!
I like🤙🤙🤙🤙
Thank you!
Picasso!!!
6 band gun for shallow water spearing...? You made slots for 6 bands and then cut the trigger because it wasn't a "Bluewater gun"....lol..... At least it looks cool.
I’ll tell you what I’ve told a ton of spearos on here. I’m not a spearfisherman or a professional speargun maker. I’m a woodworker that made a speargun. With that being said: glad you think it looks cool. I’m sure you loved where I mounted the reel on backwards too.
Ha! I didn’t even catch that. I hope my first build ends up looking this nice.
It’s a cool medium. It seems as though if you nail the important functional points there’s a lot of room to make it look sexy. Good luck when you give it a whirl.
Well done, thanks for the tips.
Most welcome!
More vids like this pls!!! Ty!
I’m considering doing a small one for myself. Maybe with a more enclosed track and using more basic tools.
good work,i was curious to try to use it
Nice build for your first but all those band holes aren't needed even for band band placement. There's a bunch of different band sizes out there and and u can cut to length instead of band placement. Epoxy for track or metal maybe? Straight wood track would wear out over time. Would love to see another build one day👍🏼
Good to know!
Wow..
Ty.
I like that one nice job
Whoa! That’s absolutely beautiful! It kind of makes me want to start spear fishing 😎
Thank you Terri!
wow.....very nice ...
Much appreciated!
Is that cool or what! 👍👍 Very nice work. Bomb-proof finish, too. Thanks!
Thanks jerry! It’s trippy that a lot of teak guns aren’t finished with anything but maybe that’s just one less thing to worry about.
Waooooooooooooo quiero uno 😍😘😘😍😘😘😘🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Thanks bro.
Great job my brother
Thank you sir.
This is a cool project! I don't think I'll ever be in the position to make a spear gun, but it is soo cool! And you gotta love arguing with yourself. :)
One of my finer moments for sure.
Awesome work dude! Turned out great.
Thanks Derek! Really feeling making one with an enclosed track... But I gotta get the cool little router bit for it.
oohhh my!!! wat and art!!! can i have 1 of ur master piece? :)
Sorry! Looks like this might just be a one off.
Oh hey! I bought that whisky for my dad for fathers day, It's fantastic, if you want something that, as far as spirits go has a very mild burn and it's super sweet and warm. I don't drink expensive whiskys tbf, I'm comparing it to like, jack daniels and captain morgans, the only other whiskys I've had are Famous grouse and Laphroig, didn't care for FG and Laphroig is a different ball game.
70cl bottle was like, £25 ish on amazon around last fathers day, not sure what it's at now.
Laphraoig is a great one!
Mt bom. Parabens! Só faltou o teste na agua, flutuabilidade e tiro.
Eyy nice work man, gun looks clean!
Thanks! Definitely could use some design tweaks for the next one but it was a fun build nonetheless.
I live in Japan
Omg dude, you are so good at this! Amazing video keep up your good work brother!
Thank you!
damn thats beautiful
Thank you!
Done subscribe sir watching from.philippines
Thank you!
Great Talent... Amazing Speargun. i wish i have too. will be used in vlogging...
Thank you!
Nice skills bro! Those laminates weren’t super tight and you mounted the reel backwards but other than that, amazing work!!!
Ha thanks. Yeah the end user had to flip the reel around. What do I know. I’m a woodworker making a speargun not a spearo that happens to woodwork.
Have you used the gun much since? How’s it perform? Would you make any changes?
It was a custom commission so I don’t have much in the way of feedback but I do remember him saying that it would be a little more comfortable if the trigger mechanism was a bit closer to the grip. Like maybe 1/4-1/2 inch.
Shweeeet bro!
Thanks brother!
Is this spear gun for sale ?man you have some good skills
It was bought and sold and likely more of a one off item. Sorry. But thanks for the compliment and thanks for watching.
Saya suka om berapa klu beli om
How much for one like that??
I don’t sell them but that’s every bit a five hundred dollar gun based on labor and the wood.
Piece of cake.....and butter on my bread....!!!!.....Tomorrow I will fixe some of them....!!!!...Hahaha....!!!
Hello, great video...thx One question: what is the reasoning behind using the penetrating epoxy first and then a standard 2:1 epoxy? Is the first not enough? is the penetrating epoxy also a mix with hardener? Did you sand between penetrating epoxy...standard epoxy and then the finish? Thx in advance and sorry for the 20 questions. Jason
Yeah so the penetrating epoxy is a ton thinner. It’ll travel the pores and grain direction to preserve it from the inside out and the 2:1 operates as a more substantial top coat. It is a two part mix with hardener. I did a very light scuff sand. Just some 220 to knock down any little bumpies.
Question! Why do you cut the wood up into slices just to stick it back together, rather than using it as- is?
It’s to mitigate twist and warping over time
Where did you get the trigger from?
Neptonics website
Built one myself out of teak a couple of years ago using the same trigger mech. About the shortcomings, I would also say you've got far too many holes for the bands, unless you plan on spearing a whale? hahah all in all fun to watch. Thanks for sharing.
Only a shallow water whale 😂
Great job man! What would you use to seal a mahogany home built speargun, oil or epoxy?
Which oil would you use?
I’ve heard mahogany is better served with epoxy. Probably follow similar steps to what I did in the video. If you use an oil penofin is good
can you tell me where you got the trigger mechanism from?🙃
Neptonics. They sell it on their website.
Hey Chris @cowdogcraftwood did the 2 part epoxy or urethane finish effect the fit in the trigger mortise? Did you compensate at all when sizing the mortise?
Also, can you share any details about how you sized the shaft track for the size spear shaft the gun will use?
Thanks!
Didn’t affect the mortise whatsoever. As far as the track itself I used a spear shaft and went somewhere between 1/16 to 1/8 larger… it was a while ago so my memory is a little fuzzy.
Meni alus
How to install line relief , how much gap in the trigger pocket?
The line wrap was installed by the end user. The trigger guard area was just eye balled.
Hows the gun holding up ?
Haven’t the slightest idea. I made it for a client. But I haven’t gotten an angry email or anything in the years since so presumably well.
Hi do you have plans available for this product so I could make it my self?
I unfortunately do not
@@CowDogCraftWorks thanks for the responce bud
Why are you worried about twist over time? Are sg's usually laminated, or solid? I was just surprised to see you laminating it.
They’re mostly laminated from what I’ve seen.
waww
A question, is Meranti wood good for making spearfishing gun? Like durable what is cons and pros?
Thanks
I have absolutely no idea. Never heard of it.
That rose wood is beautiful, I would die to know where you got it from down here in south Florida
I have a video on how we milled it. It’s a limited supply but there’s some rosewood trees down here. I want to say that particular tree was felled during hurricane Irma.
@@CowDogCraftWorks cool I'll check that out, I would love to get some actual native hardwood from the area, going to home depot for wood sucks haha
Can you pls tell the measurements of the final product
I honestly don’t remember. I made it a long time ago. However if I recall it was about 60” long and about 2.5” wide and about 1.5” thick.
Hello.. Are you selling the spearguns you make?
I am not. Sorry!
Hi where did you get the magnet from?
Home Depot. You can use any small neodymium magnets though from amazon or literally anywhere.
Hi, have you ever made a spear gun with purple heart? Is that a good wood to make a speargun
I always make my speargun but economy not let me do that i think i will always watch this videos :(
Bummer dude. I might be doing another one soon and hopefully get some footage for you to see it in action.
What dado stack blade did u use, how thick? Also how thick was the spear
I honestly can’t remember at all. It was a pretty standard spear shaft. I made this almost a year ago and I don’t have the gun for reference.
Howdy!! What are the parts you used for the trigger and stuff? And also what was the total cost (excluding labor)? It is an amazing speargun and as a spearo myself I’d definitely use that gun!
Honestly? Fairly inexpensive. The trigger mechanism is from neptonics. It was under a hundred bucks… granted I made this like four years ago. I got the reel from them too and that was fairly inexpensive. Of course… the tools to build it aren’t necessarily cheap. It really depends on your hardware kit… definitely check out neptonics for that.
@@CowDogCraftWorksill definitely check them out! I’ve been thinking of building my own speargun after watching your videos, since my buddy is a carpenter i guess me and him can work on one! Would be great to send u the final results!
I don’t have a drill press can I use a biscuit joiner?
Sure why not michael. Why tf not.
Cow Dog Craft Works thanks. Sorry another question. What stain? You didn’t mention which color stain
@@design_guild4431 it does not look like he used a stain at all rosewood is already so pretty no need to stain :) just protective finishing! but i could have missed it but i don't think there was one!
Awsome work im a fan of ur work sir
I also subscribe ur channel...
Hope to get a speargun giveaway ..
It well make my day so special..
Thanks! Maybe eventually.
hey mate, just wondering what dimensions you used in creating the gun. thanks
Honestly I can’t remember. If I recall I based everything off the spear shaft. So I think it’s like 10”-12” shorter than the spear.
Great Video. Where did you buy the hardware?
Directly from Neptonics website
Perfection👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻can I have one?😊😊😊
Haha maybe I should start getting into the speargun business
What spear shaft did you use?
I can’t recall the brand but it was a 9/32 diameter.
I am a new subsciber here from the philippines. Pls let me buy one of your speargun.
Unfortunately that was the only one I’ve ever made.
Am I the only one who noticed he installed the reel backwards 🤦♂️
Good eye. The end user flipped it back. I’m a woodworker making a speargun for the first time, not a spear fisherman who knows about woodworking.
I’m just giving you a hard time. The gun looked great! Lots of great times ahead for who whoever gets to use it!
Thanks man! Yeah it was a wacky build. I really want to do another one and keep it for myself... and then shoot a fish in the face.
Nawww lmao u serious ?.
Well lmao , I put brake calipers backwards one time on one of the four tires lmao 😂
Hey man!! Just wondering what type of Magnets you used and what you used to Glue the pieces of wood together. Thanks :)
Titebond 2... I would recommend going with 3 or using epoxy to laminate the wood together. Those are just neodymium magnets. I got mine from Home Depot.
Can i have it....iam from indonesia
You cannot. Not because of any other reason than someone else owns it now.
Gooooooood shiiiit bro, so it sounds like from the other comments this was a commission piece? Cause everyone wants to see this beauty shoot some shit lol
Hahaha yeah man this does not live with me anymore
Hi, if I make a wooden speargun wit 3 horizontal laminations would that be OK?
Could be. Just don’t make them too thin.
@@CowDogCraftWorks my dimensions are 1 5/8 x 1 and 3/4.is that OK?
I’m certainly not an engineer but that doesn’t sound bad.
@@CowDogCraftWorks thank you. I am using mahogany
I like your videos, I’m Brazilian, and I also make a diving harpoon, what glue do you use to glue the woods,
I used titebond II... BUT I only used that because I did a lot of extra finishing work. If you’re not confident in your ability to keep the gun water tight or you don’t want to use topical finishes you should use poly glue or titebond 3.
@@CowDogCraftWorks do you think that if i use titebond 3, and then i finish it with epoxy resin, you think there is no danger of peeling off
@@CowDogCraftWorks my instagram ;; gil 3520
Yeah that should be fine.
Where can i buy that trigger?
Neptonics
@@CowDogCraftWorks thanks
Sir can i have that one of your spear gun, im a fisher man to
Sorry man! Not for sale. Glad you liked it though.
Ma sono in vendita???
Quanto costerebbe farne realizzare uno?
Hey what if i do the gun with one piece of wood?
There’s nothing that really prevents that per se. I’m primarily a woodworker not a speargun maker so my mindset was to make a laminated blank for the purposes of strength and to minimize warping due to wood movement. If it’s a solid blank, it could bend or twist over time and that would effect the integrity of your track and the accuracy of your gun.
Can I buy one
Unfortunately not for sale.
🇧🇷👀💪
Thank you 🙏🏼
How much for this...
Not for sale sorry!
Regarding buoyancy, what is the density of the rosewood you used for this build?
Not specific on numbers for that but it has a similar weight and feel to teak. Probably a bit lighter.
Hola buenas tardes existirá la posibilidad de obtener los planos incluyendo el gatillo gracias
Link of the trigger?
Should be on Neptonics’ website. Unfortunately it’s been quite a long time since I built this so I don’t have any update info on it.
How much to make me one boss please very much needed
Thank you but unfortunately this was a one off kind of project.
