Had a 90 Quattro 20V - non turbo 7A engine - back in 2000, a car I always regret selling. People always loved that it had quattro written into the heated rear window element, I wish they brought that back, I miss it on my S3.
A wonderful, short-lived car! I still have my 1990 90 20v. Never letting it go. The normally aspirated 2.3 5cyl 20v 7A engine is a gem. Eager, smooth, bulletproof and sounds brilliant. The rest of the package is well designed, well engineered, solid and unfussy. Individual and characterful. Mine is not a quattro but a fwd - still good fun 👍

Got one in build at moment OE looks but circa 800bhp. Cant wait nearly finished now. Even as stock these are fabulous cars full of feel a proper drivers car.
I think if you have ever been in a 2.2l I5 Quattro, that sounds, it is amazing - coupled to the forces it sends through you body. You need to experience that.
I loved my UR a definite keeper but my wife decided it needed to go as the garage it lived in was coming down & I was weak & skint at the time Biggest regret in my driving life it was such a magical car the drive & owning a iconic car & that sound from the five pot was superb.
Had exactly the same car back in the early 90s - had it for two years, nothing failed and only sold it to a guy in NZ when I got a company car. Thanks for the memory 👍
These cars were an absolute dream in the 80's when we were trundling around in mk2 Escorts with a Weber Carb and Janspeed exhaust, so desirable and out of reach.
I spent a lot of time in my father in law's 1986 4000 Quattro Sedan, dark Graphite Gray, fully optioned, 5 speed, black leather interior which is essentially the same in line 5 cylinder, 10v no turbo fuel injection engine with 5 speed stick shift, chassis and suspension with lockable center and rear diffs. An absolutely sublime little terror of a car! Balls out in all weather and road conditions, supreme comfort for a driver and three passengers and luggage in mud, rain and snow. LOVED that car! At the time, in the mid 80s and into the early 90s, Quattro was king - I don't have to mention the Group B Rally dominance or the unique quality and aura that these cars exuded. Now, very few of these cars even exist and to come across ANY period era Quattros, coupes or otherwise is rare (I particularly love the 5000 Avant Quattro Wagons). The driving experience compared to modern cars is admittedly less refined but the elegance and muscular nature of these cars is marvelous. You just have to drive one to understand. Great post - thank you!
Yet another informative and interesting piece of work Henry, I thoroughly enjoy them. Thank you and best wishes to the Carfection team. See you next year.
Another great video from Henry, concise yet perfectly to the point, conveying the feel of the car and packing in loads of extra info. I'd never considered that the petrol inline five engine had to wait for the development of fuel injection, yet it makes perfect sense. Many thanks, and Happy Christmas to the best car reviewer out there!
40 years!! I very well remember the first one I saw on the road. Even for a Lancia fan I found it strange, but special... (I must say that I missed the Algarve Rally, that I guess was the first outing of the Rally Car) Good review, as ever.
In a time when Quattro meant something really extra special. That almost introvert 5 cylinder burble makes most modern performance cars look a tad silly.
I've dreamt of owning a Quattro for over 10 years. 1981 Quattro in Red or Silver with the faded 4 rings logo on the side and the grey "dashed" fabric interior. Completely stock except for the more modern counter-sunk wheels that the car in this video has. I know considering at 23 I will never ever get to own one as non-electric cars will be a thing of the past very soon and the prices of these just keep going up, but it's not stopping me from hoping that one day I could get very lucky. Fabulous video as always, keep it up! :)
I was fortunate to own a 10v back in '93/94, it cost me £4k. It was my first turbo car, my first all wheel drive car and even my first car with ABS. The Quattro will forever be a personal favourite, as will the Skyline R32 GTR and Impreza Type RA Spec C I own today.
Had some vacation back in Mach & I hoped to drive to the Geneva motor show, to celebrate the 40th of the original unveiling. I was pretty certain Audi would do something special, and having owned a 10 then 20V it was to be a nostalgic visit. . . . . . but I guess you see where that plan went . Oh well, maybe the 50th Anniversary. An important , very capable & enjoyable car , I wish I could have kept it.
Like the 850 T5 did for Volvo, this car catapulted AUDI from its 'middle-class granddad-mobile' brand into a super-fast must-have for the enthusiast driver. The chap who first suggested the concept from humble Iltis to Uber-auto was a genius.
Has the weirdest, most poorly engineered engine bay ever made with the engine being so far over the front axle....yet somehow it still handles amazingly and was so successful. Amazing.
This car is the reason I owned a white B5 S4 Avant.. which I modded to include Roland Mayer, founder of German tuner, MTM, ECM software. You didn’t mention the clutch or the brakes…which was good! I had the 2nd gen 10valve and then the 20 valve. I thought that the clutch seemed heavy compared to 90s era quattros, but the brakes were good for road use-certainly nicer than the over-servoed 90s & Noughties ones. Red was chosen as it improved night vision, easier on your eyes to adjust in low light. Plus it was the cheapest to produce the components to make it.
