RAC Rally 1985 - I was one of the stage marshals and bore witness to Hannu Mikkola's Sport E2 passing by me within a short distance when its exhaust exploded spitting out flames a good half metre behind. Unforgettable, and my all-time favourite car.

I marshalled at Rally Australia in 95 or 96 (getting old can't remember!) and had Stiq Blomqvist retire near my marshall point. I offered to give him a lift back to the start of the stage. I'd driven to the stage in my nearly new Celica GT-Four Group A Rallye. He and his co-driver were a bit hesitant getting into the car as it had been raining and they had mud all over their shoes. I couldn't have cared less! How often do you get the chance to drive a rally legend around. He was a great bloke.

There is something that I have always found to be mortally scary about this car. There's a combination of things. Firstly, there are its looks, with all of that big bodywork on a short wheel base, and the brutality of its gait in the way that you can see the weight being thrown forwards under braking, and then thrust rearwards again under the acceleration of all of that power. Then there's that haunting 5-cylinder wail frequently punctuated by a loud, spinning, scything, piercing whistle. And then there's the fact that it carries the halo of the fearsome reputation of Group B. I find it all to be sinister in a way that can be quite troubling, in exactly the same way that a small child is irrationally afraid of monsters: although I've never seen one of these in action other than on video, the monstrous experience feels very real to me. I would mentally have a problem stepping inside one of these, and yet I hold it up as one of my most hallowed motorsport icons, just for the way that it never fails to make an impression.

My highest of regards to the absolute monsters that the Group B era drivers were. I simply cannot imagine
what it must've been like to thunder through small roads, dense forests, dust storms and, of course, crazed people lining the stage. To be able to drive one of these mechanical monsters must've been an absolutely surreal experience. God, I get chills when thinking about that era, even if I wasn't born to experience them. Mr. Catchpole, your videos are absolutely stunning, and they are true gems of the automotive world. Also, HUGE props to the Carfection team for shooting such spectacular shots and incorporating beautiful editing. Be it the intro with the TT, Quattro and the S1 E2, or the binaural audio ending for the two five-cylinder engines. I, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for making this video.

The "chirping" sound is not wastegate, or bypass/blowoff (these cars didn't have a bypass or blowoff valve) it's compressor surge.. When the throttle closes, the boosted air stops at the butterfly, and the back surge of air stops the turbo spinning momentarily. Note that the factory rallye cars had the boost pipes mechanically connected via hooks, to keep the rubber hoses from flying off of the carbon hard pipes.

It was however, not automatic. It was a semi-auto sequential gearbox, something like a modern PDK in manual mode.
Also, such gearboxes are older than you might think. Hillman Minx used something very similar in 1960's (called Easydrive) and Eastern-block tractors (and similar machines) used essentially the same thing since 1970's as pre-selector gearboxes.

If ever I find myself in a ‘money no object’ situation, the first big money car I would buy is either an original or replica of one of these. Just fabulous.

I got a redundancy package in 2004/5 and found one of these online. €200k. It was that or set up a business.
      I chose the business.
      Big mistake.
They're worth mega money now. But I don't care about that.
Imagine going to Tesco for milk in one of these.
      Its my biggest life regret

@@animalcol1 I would love the sheer impracticality. Probably have to warm the engine up for 20 minutes before you could move. Neighbours would either strongly love or strongly hate you. Quite interesting on a snowy commute to work though, I’d guess.

I watched group B in the day & and it was truly amazing…
The Audi is my ultimate favourite and yes the 5 cylinder noise is brilliant.
You are one lucky man & another great review 👍

Excellent production and commentary as usual. Henry and the Carfection videographers area masters.
Now the car then. I'm a Fiat/Lancia through and through guy when it comes to Rally and particularly the Abarth team regarding Racing in general. To me besides their wining records that speak for themselves as well as the various categories they run simultaneously they were really innovative and good engineering wise. Having said that, I respect the Audi Quattro, it's relevance to the sport and understand it's Iconic status. I love the 5 cylinder sound (which Volvos another brand I like and Alfa/Lancia/Fiat also had) probably the only thing I lust after an Audi both old and modern. However to me the Quattro technically although it introduced the AWD to rallying, was always a bit of a mishmash with a lot of handling flaws and reliability issues that got disguised by its immense power and by the brave and talented drivers. No doubt was the car of the group B to beat (which Lancia did as well as Peugeot) and it deserves all the praise and iconic status. Now then, where's the keys for a 037... :D

The Audi Sport Quattro S1 EVO, the car that changed rally and pioneered the sport in a way that would affect the development of all rally cars that superseded it. Its introduction of awd and f1 inspired aerodynamics was truly revolutionary and changed the sport forever.

This is obviously Henry's favourite and most thrashing drive of 2021, to date, I remember watching these in the 80's and Audi announced that some of their cars had close to 800hp at the flywheel to compete with the other cars, ex:Peugeot 205
