I love that Pittsburgh is getting some shine. We are a rising city severely overlooked and underestimated. CMU is a big part of our tech community here but definitely not all we have to offer. Here's to innovation and a bright future. Shout outs to Pitt, CMU, and PP!
Another great video by The Verge! These mini-docs are so well put together. While there may have been a little too much of that robotic voice in this one, I'm really satisfied with what the video did for me: entertain and inform!
The street lights were not left on to show prosperity. They were left on due to all of the smoke in the air from the steel mills. At the time, the smoke from the steel mills was thought to show prosperity because it meant that industry in the region, which directly and indirectly provided employment to many, was going strong.
Don't understand why people are complaining about the voice. Its perfectly creepy and fits the tone of the entire video. Keep it up Verge, you guys are doing some amazing things!
The robot narrator is quite eerie. It reminds me of a 1980s or 1990s sci-fi movie.. a good sci-fi movie. :) Props to the person who came up with the idea, I think it sounds magnificent and it fits the episode beautifully. Cheers!
The robotic narrator make this video sound like a documentary of the 21st century which is being told in the perspective of a robot from the future looking back at its history o.O
Will these robotic companies ever make money without a practical application? When this tech advances and there is real money to be made, companies like Apple, Samsung and Google would jump into the field and obliterate or acquire these small robotic companies.
This narration makes wonder, that when we get taken over by robots, this voice will play, explaining how we are a virus killing the planet and that we will be eradicated
Robot voice was fine for a bit of the intro, but went on too long and its repeated use mid-way was excessive and distracting. Good job otherwise, as usual.
Not really sure why you edited in those guys half baked criticisms of academia that didn't really seem to amount to anything but complaints. What was the whole story? It seems like some advisor of theirs didn't like their lousy robotic arm so they quit and now they are too cool for school.
I LOVED THE ROBOT VOICE!! (the artistic value of the voice may have been over looked by some ppl) ignore the hater this was another inspiring episode thanks guys :)
You guys just keep getting better and better at building a story into a video with a fulfilling start and end. This is no exception!
seriously, re-edit this without the creepy/annoying robotic voice please!
That robot voice is so annoying

One of my top favorite videos the verge has ever made!
Great Journalism is when you present the good and bad points of technology. And the Verge did that here. AMAZING!!! KEEP THEM COMING!!!!
The intro can be the start of a movie I'd pay money to see
Always impressive stories, always well presented showing the lives behind the people. Great work!
Don't understand why people are complaining about the voice. Its perfectly creepy and fits the tone of the entire video. Keep it up Verge, you guys are doing some amazing things!
Please don't ever do that robotic voice ever again.
The voice is artistic and different, thank you for making it interesting and not like all the other youtube channels
.
Such a great video, thanks for uploading
Excellent content but please don't use that kinda voice again.
Now I know what a Robot Salad Fingers would sound like, and it will forever haunt my dreams.
The robot narrator is quite eerie. It reminds me of a 1980s or 1990s sci-fi movie.. a good sci-fi movie. :) Props to the person who came up with the idea, I think it sounds magnificent and it fits the episode beautifully. Cheers!
Robot narration was fantastic!

Who creates these videos!??!
I truly WORSHIP you!!!
At first I thought that, but then I thought it was creepy, and then I thought Skynet has become self aware, the robots are going to kill us all.
Verge, whoever did this is did a great job
The Robot voice was kinda creepy. It had that robot take over the world vibe.
This is art. With a lot of info. Nice.
The host... had a bad day?
I mean, damm that voice is mental.
Will these robotic companies ever make money without a practical application? When this tech advances and there is real money to be made, companies like Apple, Samsung and Google would jump into the field and obliterate or acquire these small robotic companies.
The first 2 minutes were like a bad movie from the 80s. nice
That voice gives me the chills
Amazing intro, music and robot voice.
the robotic voice is not necessary, but a great documentary overall.
I have to agree with the others :)
You could use IVONA TTS next time that wouldn't be that bad.
This narration makes wonder, that when we get taken over by robots, this voice will play, explaining how we are a virus killing the planet and that we will be eradicated
Hated the robot narration as well, but still enjoyed this segment.
My goodness he's using a tie, how awesome is that
Robot voice was fine for a bit of the intro, but went on too long and its repeated use mid-way was excessive and distracting. Good job otherwise, as usual.
The first minutes reminds me of Muse - The Second Law:Unsutainable

The tone of this Detours made me really depressed. Like a Stanley Kubrick movie.
So Pittsburgh is like Eureka from the TV show. Almost.
nagyon érdekes ez a videó,mert olyan, mint én vagyok mostanában, mert el vagyok keseredve,s ez a klip nagyon illik a hangulatomhoz, bizony....
I LOVED THE ROBOT VOICE!! (the artistic value of the voice may have been over looked by some ppl) ignore the hater this was another inspiring episode thanks guys :)
So this is what the G-Man would sound like in a normal conversation
what an excellent video
In the beginning, the robot narration was chillingly good. Every time afterward though, it kinda sucked.
The HERB (the butler) was I majestic as fuck!
Robot narration was maybe a good idea with poor implementation. It was far too slow.
Well the Verge didn't Detour this time.
Agreed but most are failing to see that. Oh well!
Couldn't watch it because of the robot voice. Reupload it with better narration. Looked like an interesting video.
That robot voice sounds like something out of dr who
Amazing stuff.
Still sound better than Siri
Science for a better life.
You guys make great videos, but the intro and segues on this one with the robot voice were SUPER annoying and PAINFULLY slow!!!
1:50 to skip marvin aka robot
