If you are new to our videos, YES, this one might strike you as a bit silly; however, if you have any interest in firearms, firearms history, and firearms safety, check out some of our other videos; you might learn something more useful than how to load an M1 Garand. Welcome aboard! :-)
Granted, as has been pointed out, if you get your thumb out of there quickly, you can load successfully without losing your thumb. The main reason this technique I'm showing is taught (And I use it always) is that it saves your thumb whenever you are messing with your M1 Garand, whether you are not getting the bolt back all the way, unloading the rifle, just checking the action, loading a partially loaded clip, etc. Probably most commonly, one gets his or her thumb caught when just working the bolt on an empty chamber, due to not getting the bolt back into the lock position. The Garand is wonderful, but the action and loading system is a bit odd, which results in a better chance of getting "Garand Thumb" in some way when trying to get the gun locked back, loaded, or whatever. I never pull the bolt back unless I have my hand against that operating rod; others can proceed however they prefer. :-) Don't forget to visit the Hickok45 store: www.hickok45.com/store/

Yes, and to handle it and fire it. I've been shooting and handling one of my USGI 1911's from WWII this week, and just holding it and thinking about its history is so moving. There's no way around it unless a person has no I.Q. at all and no appreciation of anything worthwhile. These historical pieces of hardware are just so special.

im trying to remember which battle (or even what episode) of the band of brothers series but there's a massive fire fight capturing the chaos of trench style warfare. they actually do show a guy "getting" garand thumb so badly that it looks like it's almost been cut off.
other than that, yeah, no one ever shows it in ww2 movies/shows. hell, i'd even take seeing a few guys in the background with bandaged up thumbs as representation of it if it's too difficult to shoot.

There is a way to put the bolt and cartridge follower installed in reverse order so when your buddy executes inspection arms the cartridge follower pops out of the rifle flying through the air when he draws the bolt to the rear, always got a good laugh on that one .. thanks for the walk down memory lane pal ...

When I was in JROTC we had decommissioned M1 Garands with a lead stop blocking the barrel. I knew so many people get Garand Thumb because they weren't paying attention when doing drill and ceremony commands, one of which was rifle inspections. Learning how to pull the bolt back and release it without getting your thumb stuck was nerve wracking at first, but it becomes second nature and a skill you never forget.

I saw movies and some old war films of that odd , hand to the side , loading technique and never knew why.
And I always wondered , I know that bolt is sprung hard as heck , how do you load a clip in the gun and not slam your thumb in it.
Keep the side of your hand on that bolt lever ,as you load it or smash a part of your hand...understood.
The clip flip at the last round is a one of a kind experience.

That’s why I focus on learning real life gun functionality than games/movies. You would pretty much have advanced knowledges about the guns irl when you play combat games that has guns based on real life. If you noticed something that isn’t right, then like I said, you have good knowledge.

Most people got Garand thumv from.messing with empty gun or it being incredibly worn and clean and with worn out clips(modern ww2 examples after heavy use) If it isnt well worn and on top of that is dirty then its incredibly unlikely to close on ones thumb. It will almost always require a little nudge to slide forward just like later in the video

We used the M1 Garand for target practice in Navy Boot Camp back in the early '70's. We were warned then how to properly load a clip into the rifle. They also said that the Marines would not use the method that Hickok 45 used; but instead would push the clip down and quickly remove it once the clip had been set in. Sometimes they were not quite quick enough and would be initiated into the M1 clipped thumb blood brotherhood. Don't know if that was true, or just our instructors making a point.

  • @bdh3949

Oh yeah, I'm old enough to have used the M1 while in ROTC. By the time i went into the service we were using M16's. Your video has brought back some vivid memories of that old Garand. It was fun to shoot and we learned to use the same technique as you demonstrated. Thanks Hickok.

Actually if the bombs hadnt been dropped on Japan and this was X-Day November 1945, there wouldve been thousands of British and Australian Garand Thumbs as the Allied nations participating in the invasion of Japan were going to be trained and equipped with American weapons, uniforms and tactics to avoid confusion for the main bulk of the US led invasion force.

KGames 22 incorrect, WWII started in 1939 and ended in 1945. The M1 garand was put into the war in 1939 (when the war started, it became the main rifle of the us army in 1936). How many years is the difference between 1939 and 2020? 81! Get your facts straight before trying to be a smart ass.
