I always get intense cravings for the worst American food when I'm in Japan, too. Like Taco Bell, all the time. And yet here I am in America, and I haven't had Taco Bell in over a year. -Rachel
NiHonandGoTV Taco bell isn't that great. Any good Mexican food fixings you can get in the supermarket is adequate. Some white flour tortillas and Srirachi sauce and you're half way there. Their chips aren't that great.
The matte eyeshadow is a great point! Foundation shades are also limited here so if you have a favorite it's prob better to stock up. My absolute 100% must haves are toothpaste (need that fluoride!), shoes and deodorant tho :3
Sharla in Japan You should also bring a japanese, english speaking guide.. I think you can find them in any asian resturants... Uhm.. Yea... I think Mimei got anything else.. Ehm.. Ehh yea c':
SHOES!!! I'm a size 25 in Japan so often I try to just barely squeeze in....the last time I tried this though I didn't realize it was cutting into my foot and arrived at a restaurant with a foot and new shoe covered in blood... :D yum!!!
teacup4561 There was a thing on South Park a long time ago with Terrance and Philip going on about Kraft Dinner. In America, when a company's item gets too popular, the company changes it's name to the product.
Me and my friend are learning Japanese by ourselves because here where we live there aren't any Japanese classes or anything. We really love the language and culture and we both wanna live in Japan sometime. Thank you so much for making videos, they are really fun and helpful! :)
SUNGLASSES! Japanese don't like wearing them so they're hard to find, but they saved my eyes while outside sightseeing. That is if you don't mind looking like a foreigner ^^; Don't usually buy much clothes there, but they do make an awesome beanie. Luv my Japanese made headwear. Mac n' cheese?? Lol Sharla. I can't eat that stuff without ketchup on it. Which reminds me. Did you get heinz mustard for Mira? Hahaha
Sharla in Japan I hear that in there is peanut butter in Japan but it is more on the sweet side, is that true? I guess Mira prefer's the one she is used to :3
When I was in Japan I had trouble finding just your standard razor for shaving legs. They had every other sort of razor for eyebrows, lip hair and heaps of other stuff. I might have just been looking in the wrong place. Who knows...
Haha actually no you're totally right! I'm kinda surprised at the lack of standard leg razors! D: I found one store that sells the kind I like so I always stock up when I go there XD;
i agree with the eyeshadow thing. i could tell from the kind of makeup that is sold in daiso here in my country, they're all sparkle and glitter and nothing's really matte.
Dude, you forgot to mention FROSTED FLAKES! haha. Or at least I see those everywhere in supermarkets here in Japan. But totally agree with you, the selection is NOT great here for cereal. I would really love me some of those Lucky Charms or Raisin Bran or Coco Puffs or my all time favourite TRIX!!!! But great video Sharla!
Sharla I love your videos so much I am taking japanese and I wanna move there so bad I watch your videos every week that's what I look forward to!!!!!!! Thank you so much!!!!!!
I just found you a few days ago and i love you even more finding out your canadian i am as well but it seems your living the dream keeps up the wonderful videos
Oh my gosh! lol, I never thought of it that way but you're right! Kraft mac n cheese IS the trash ramen of the west. Yep, we call it Mac N' Cheese in America.
I think another important thing is bras. I had SOOOO much trouble buying bras in Japan. The stores in 109 DID NOT have my size whatsoever. A few other stores had some in my size, but they just didn't fit right. And being pregnant, my boob size was constantly changing before I came back to Australia. So.. that sucked. And that goes for swimmers as well. I bought 2 beautiful bikinis... but they are a bit skimpy up the top now I've grown. So big boobed women of the world, be warned.
I'd probably recommend bringing bras (if you're a girl) if you have larger breasts. When I went to Japan I went to a clothing store and I didn't see any larger size cups.. So if you're well endowed I'd definitely bring bras!
This is the first video I've seen of yours, and I absolutely loved it and completely adored and worshiped you from the moment I started watching it. BUT...then you broke my heart with your love of Aunt Jemima Pancake Syrup rather than the sweet nectar of the gods colloquially referred to as "Real Maple Syrup" - especially since you're from Canada. I am chagrined to report that this revelation instantly shattered my dreams like a thousand cruel, cold, shards of ice piercing my heart, forever twisting inside and causing a rupture of darkest pain and misery. The very earth opened up and swallowed me within, falling into a deep abyss as I cried out in anguish with a disappearing cry of despair. Therefore, unfortunately, the wedding is off. However, I shall keep you subscribed as, aside from this huge guilt-ridden crime of _heresy_ and _blasphemy_ in the tallest and most egregious order against all that is good and holy from the Gods themselves (Maple Syrup), I find you wonderful and informative! Yes, I admit: Maple Syrup means a lot to me. Living in Vermont for a few months of your life will have that effect on you. :D Seriously though, thanks for your videos! I love them and they're very interesting for somebody, such as myself, planning on gong to Japan for a while. :)
Ahahahaha. My friend just brought me back a giant jug of maple syrup from Canada, it appears more than one person is disappointed with my love for Aunt Jemima. I promise to give it another shot ^^;;
Sharla in Japan Lol. Sorry about the weird post! I'm a writer since a very long time and it just came to me. I felt I had to comment. :) I think I found you through Rachel & Jun, or Victor or somebody. Been researching a lot and found out about all you vloggers - to whom I am very grateful! Been asking questions on many sites and watching videos to learn. I hope to come over in around 2 months for now and I want to get all my planning and research done long before I get there. :) Anyway, thank you again! All of you have been eye-opening for me so far and I do appreciate it.
And yes, give real maple syrup another try! :D It's the best in the world. I do miss it where I am. I can get it, but, as usual, it's very expensive outside of where it is made.
Nathaniel Harari I rather enjoyed your comment and the way you wrote that. I was HIGHLY amused. However, I talk like that a lot, and I also am a writer...but yeah. I liked your comment ^^
Suggestion! If you're not a fan of frilly stuff, definitely bring a lot of bras/underwear because in Japan almost all bras are insanely frilly and have got all sorts of padding lace on them and are basically impossible to wear without an undershirt.
Love your videos, they're always so interesting. I look forward to seeing new ones all the time. This one gives a real insight into the types of food and such that aren't available in Japan. How is Pupu-chan?! Does someone else look after her while you are away?
The hair is. Amazing!!!! Makes your eye look super light! Wow! :) Random question cos im a weirdo xD and too curious for my own good! Is there any food restrictons at customs when traveling with foods?
Off the top of my head; don't take fruit or liquids over 100ml. Liquids will have to be packed in your suitcase or they are confiscated. Sorry if you already knew this :]
it would be so great if you did a makeup tutorial! and I'd love to see what makeup stores in japan are like too, if you have time to make a video for that :)
Three things to... ... bring to Japan: olive oil, olive paste, your favorite tobacco (or rotten cheese if you are French and/or hypochondriac) because they are so bloody hard to find ... bring from Japan: books, alcohol and cigarettes, since they are so cheap there
Kraft Mac&Cheese. I dont eat processed sugar so I live on 100% Pure Canadian Maple Syrup and Raw Florida Orange Blossom Honey. Id bring in truckloads of it lol. Unless they have some yummy unprocessed honey and syrups in japan.
Great video Sharla. Not that I am planning a trip any time soon to Japan, but what are the limits of certain food stuffs? What can you have and cannot bring? How much of each box? I know there was something about fresh fruits, and any mayonnaise/dairy when I moved back to the states from living in England in 2003. Maybe you and other posters whom live there in Japan can advise other people visiting or living there in the near future. I was mad about having to throw out my grapes during the international water time, before we landed in Orlando! UGH! If I had known, ( I did not check ) I would not have made sandwiches and brought back green grapes and bananas. Such a waste of food. In the bin it went. Welcome back to Japan. Hope you had a nice visit home. Hello to Mira when ya see her too.
meat and vegetables i believe are the only ones also they usually don't open your bags if you speak japanese or already live in japan in my experience xD
Ahhh ladies ladies ❤️ being "tall" and worrying about it is so cute! Imagine what it will be like for me!! (6"3 size 13 shoe haha) But I'm a man though so I guess the hassle is much more for the poor madams.
Shelby Says I'm so late to your reply so sorry. I've been to Japan so do not fear I met a few Tall japanese men. I went on a date with a guy who was 6'1. So do not worry, they are there you just have to search. But, also try and learn some Japanese. I will say the people I met while I went to Tokyo were very friendly and new enough english to hold a conversation.
wow thanks for the super interesting items that are not easy to find there. when I do get to go there I will have a better idea of what I really should bring. thanks.
Most Canadians I've met (I live in Calgary, AB) prefer aunt Jemima to real syrup. The only person I know who prefers real syrup is my mother. But I can taste the tree O___O
True. I'm in Canada, and most people I know prefer the fake stuff - it's thicker, smoother, and if you get the butter flavour, many people think it tastes much better ☺
My shoe size is 41 (europe) 25.5 (japan) and I can't find any shoes here xD Even on the Internet I have some difficulty with shoes (^^; Thanks for this video ! You're so beautiful in it ! I love your new hair color and your make-up (*^^*) I really want to try false eyelashes that we can find in every drugstores xD
I just made a similar video a few weeks ago. Never even thought about matte eyeshadows, now I wish I brought more x_x Another thing for girls to think about bringing is tampons (If you use them) they are way more expensive here in Japan.
When I visit Japan, I always take Fritos (which I think they have now, but in small bags). I take the big bags and bean dip for my cousin. Also, beef jerky for my uncle, and Kraft caramels and Godiva chocolates for my aunts. They may have these things, but again in small packages and expensive.
Whoa... I got a Japanese commercial instead of an American one. You have some scary ass shoes there... Good chikan deterrent :P And yes, in the US it's Kraft Macaroni and Cheese Dinner. The bigger, fancier one is "Deluxe Macaroni and Cheese Dinner", which I think it's way better than the powdered cheese one. But it's bigger and meant for more than one person so it's a pain to split up into smaller servings because you have to figure out how much cheese to use so it still comes out with the right cheese to noodle proportion...
はじめまして! I'm Japanese high school student. I wanna go to Canada and study abroad someday! I really be interested in difference of Japan and Canada. There're many differences !!! I didn't know... I'm looking forward to watching another video! I'm sorry not to write English well. これからもがんばってください(^O^)!
>I'm sorry not to write English well.
I subscribe your channel, from your cat cafe movie. I memorize when I has visited America. Different color makeup tool sold in Japan and America, although same makeup bland. (I'm not good at English sorry...)
Hahaha I really missed my cereal while living in Hong Kong! I've been on a cereal binge since returning to the UK :B Thanks for telling us about the sizes of clothing!
I always thought Kraft Dinner was like, an actual dinner that you had to heat up like a frozen TV dinner or something. I've never been so wrong, I LOVE that stuff. Here it's just called Kraft Mac n Cheese or something, it's amazing. Though I prefer Velveeta Deluxe Mac (sorry 'bout it Kraft, love me some liquid cheese. I'm American I can't stop.)
I'm a size 13 in mens so when my boots crapped out after a week (and I still had another week left in Tokyo), my wife had to ask in Japanese at shoe stores for this, which got her a lot of blank stares and even laughter. We finally settled on a pair of size 12 Cons from ABC Mart. I had to really squeeze into these since I'm a true size 13 wide. Never will I make the mistake of not bringing at least 2 pairs of shoes again.
Kraft Mac and Cheese is sold as Kraft Dinner in Canada because of a change in labeling laws that happened around 1980. The old ads referred to it as cheese and macaroni - but the law change required the ingredients to be listed in order of greatest to least - there macaroni and cheese - Kraft changed their ad push to the Kraft Dinner brand after that. Same rule changes forever killed the pork and beans labeling as well.
Sharla's One Ton of Fun Plus Sized Store - "Outfitting the Expanding Economy" . Your second billion dollar retail chain in Japan. (After Sharla's Pie Plate)
This was actually really useful and mentioned a few things no one had mentioned before specifically the eye shadow tip. I have a scar on my right eye, which eye shadow tends to stick to, so I think the shiny stuff would just make it really obvious. Keep up the videos, always really well done.
Hey Sharla, glad your back in the land of Japan. So did you get any mustard for Mira?? I hear she loves the stuff but there is none to be found in Japan.
Your makeup is GORGEOUS in this girl!
I always get intense cravings for the worst American food when I'm in Japan, too. Like Taco Bell, all the time. And yet here I am in America, and I haven't had Taco Bell in over a year.
-Rachel
I rarely ate Taco Bell in the U.S, but now that I live in Berlin I've been craving it for over a year.
Darek Amadeus
HUR DURR DURR
Being from Australia I've never had Taco Bell, and have always wanted to know what the fuss is about.
I love white flour tortillas. Not the best thing for you but really just so good.
NiHonandGoTV Taco bell isn't that great. Any good Mexican food fixings you can get in the supermarket is adequate. Some white flour tortillas and Srirachi sauce and you're half way there. Their chips aren't that great.
i love watching planning trips videos so I can be pretending that im actually going to travel soon
The matte eyeshadow is a great point! Foundation shades are also limited here so if you have a favorite it's prob better to stock up. My absolute 100% must haves are toothpaste (need that fluoride!), shoes and deodorant tho :3
AH toothpaste yessss forgot that one. And yes def foundation shades if you're not pastey white like I am cuz that's all they have here hahaha xD
Sharla in Japan You should also bring a japanese, english speaking guide.. I think you can find them in any asian resturants... Uhm.. Yea... I think Mimei got anything else.. Ehm.. Ehh yea c':
Wait, whats wrong with japanese toothpaste?
LaJ126 Tooth paste in Japan doesn't have fluoride in it.
Mac N' Cheese or Macaroni and Cheese he he Loving your hair by the way :3
SHOES!!! I'm a size 25 in Japan so often I try to just barely squeeze in....the last time I tried this though I didn't realize it was cutting into my foot and arrived at a restaurant with a foot and new shoe covered in blood... :D yum!!!
Your makeup is always flattering and impeccable.
Aw thank you~
Why yes. In the US it is called Macaroni & cheese :P
Canadians man.
We have a thing in Canada with calling things by brand names lol
alias1928
So true!! That's so weird...
teacup4561 There was a thing on South Park a long time ago with Terrance and Philip going on about Kraft Dinner. In America, when a company's item gets too popular, the company changes it's name to the product.
alias1928 Wite-out is actually a brand! Some of my American friends had no idea I was talking about "correction fluid"
Me and my friend are learning Japanese by ourselves because here where we live there aren't any Japanese classes or anything. We really love the language and culture and we both wanna live in Japan sometime. Thank you so much for making videos, they are really fun and helpful! :)
Your hair looks BEAUTIFUL!! Love the ombré on you! :)
Sharla, you're so pretty! The new hair colour suits you so well!
Hahaha
Mira requested Q-Tips and Peanut Butter this time, haha.
Sharla in Japan I hear that in there is peanut butter in Japan but it is more on the sweet side, is that true? I guess Mira prefer's the one she is used to :3
日本の方にも失礼の無いように言葉を選んでるように感じられてとても気持ちよく見ることができました♪
When I was in Japan I had trouble finding just your standard razor for shaving legs. They had every other sort of razor for eyebrows, lip hair and heaps of other stuff. I might have just been looking in the wrong place. Who knows...
Haha actually no you're totally right! I'm kinda surprised at the lack of standard leg razors! D: I found one store that sells the kind I like so I always stock up when I go there XD;
Lucky you found a place! :D I just figured the Japanese (not all of course) just aren't as hairy as us Westerners...
Super helpful when moving abroad is to think about what you have to take with you or will miss. Btw, i loved your makeup in this video sharla :)!
There's Nesquik cereal in Canada?????!!!
woman! your hair is that light looks amazing and is making me want to spend money I don't have and finally do mine!
Haha I know that feeling. You look gorgeous though~~ but I must say the pic I saw of you with blonde hair was stunning :o
dang....being tall and wearing size 11 is not gonna work for me if I go to Japan....
Haha same except I'm short. I wear 10, though. Just rock your tall-ness.
I love your videos. So fun and informative. And whatever you're doing with your hair lately, wow you look great!
Aw thank youuu! :D
kind of similar to Korea. :)
hi megan !!
Tis comment is a place holder so I can find this video later
Your skin looks AMAZING here! In awe.
Slightly unrelated to the video but Sharla your eyelashes look amazing here!
i agree with the eyeshadow thing. i could tell from the kind of makeup that is sold in daiso here in my country, they're all sparkle and glitter and nothing's really matte.
But great video Sharla!
your hair looks so gorgeous in this video... i really love the colour and the shade... really beautiful! :)
Ugh LOVE your hair!
Sharla I love your videos so much I am taking japanese and I wanna move there so bad I watch your videos every week that's what I look forward to!!!!!!! Thank you so much!!!!!!
In America its called Kraft macaroni and cheese.
シャーちゃんを久しぶりに見れてよかったです。。
your hair and makeup is perfect D:
I just found you a few days ago and i love you even more finding out your canadian i am as well but it seems your living the dream keeps up the wonderful videos
Oh my gosh! lol, I never thought of it that way but you're right! Kraft mac n cheese IS the trash ramen of the west. Yep, we call it Mac N' Cheese in America.
im goin to japan on exchange this year ahhh so excited
I think another important thing is bras. I had SOOOO much trouble buying bras in Japan. The stores in 109 DID NOT have my size whatsoever. A few other stores had some in my size, but they just didn't fit right. And being pregnant, my boob size was constantly changing before I came back to Australia. So.. that sucked. And that goes for swimmers as well. I bought 2 beautiful bikinis... but they are a bit skimpy up the top now I've grown.
So big boobed women of the world, be warned.
Don't even need big boobs to have problems, my rib cage is pretty big around so I have problems finding bras that fit that way too D:
Sharla in Japan
And its such a shame because they habe THE CUTEST bras over there... and for sooo much cheaper than here in Australia...!

Yes, in America the "Kraft Dinner" is simply called "Kraft Macaroni & Cheese." But personally, I always liked to call it "Kraft Mac" for some reason.
Oh come on Japan! Get with it! This super tall girl with a size 12 women's US foot needs some good Japanese clothes!!!!
Same! All their clothes are sooooo cute and I'd like to wear them but I'm too tall and my feet are apparently too big ¿ (9 1/2 )
I'm 5'2 but I have the hugest feet like I'm an 11 in women's like daqf *-*

Miwa Okumura Yes! I'm going to do a video about Japanese underwear
Love your videos, they're always so interesting. I look forward to seeing new ones all the time. This one gives a real insight into the types of food and such that aren't available in Japan. How is Pupu-chan?! Does someone else look after her while you are away?
The beer! Where's the Canadian beer?!! :)
I really appreciate these Japan videos since I might be going there on short-term foreign exchange in July! ありがとう! :)
The hair is. Amazing!!!! Makes your eye look super light! Wow! :)
Random question cos im a weirdo xD and too curious for my own good!
Is there any food restrictons at customs when traveling with foods?
Off the top of my head; don't take fruit or liquids over 100ml. Liquids will have to be packed in your suitcase or they are confiscated. Sorry if you already knew this :]
Lara King Good to know. :) ありがとうございます!
Fresh produce and meat products aren't allowed :)
Sharla in Japan Oh, bummer. :(
it would be so great if you did a makeup tutorial! and I'd love to see what makeup stores in japan are like too, if you have time to make a video for that :)
Kraft Dinner in America = Mac & Cheese. I was so confused when you said kraft dinner lol >
I am actually packing for japan (and procrastinating a little) right now so this is very helpful. thank you
Craft Mac n Cheese! Americans don't like to say long words~
+CorgishStudios Here in the UK it's called "Kraft Cheesey Pasta"... I don't know why
That "Kraft Dinner", here in Australia at least is simply called "Mac 'n' Cheese".
Also here we have maple flavoured sugar cane syrup.
Three things to...
... bring to Japan: olive oil, olive paste, your favorite tobacco (or rotten cheese if you are French and/or hypochondriac) because they are so bloody hard to find
... bring from Japan: books, alcohol and cigarettes, since they are so cheap there
お帰りなさい! 日本が楽しくてカナダが恋しくならないようになると

I thought there were a lot of food restrictions in the japanese airports D: I guess not really, since you brought various types and sizes of it
meat and vegetables i believe are the only ones
also they usually don't open your bags if you speak japanese or already live in japan in my experience xD
Btw, love how your hair looks!
AHHHH IM GOING TO JAPAN IN A WEEK WHAT DO I DO TO PREPARE
Really useful! Except for the snacks hehe What to pack is really driving me crazy :S
i'm 5'8 so basically i'd have to carry 3 cases of clothes with me. Maybe I could buy shirts their, but i doubt it. Oh the joy's of being tall ..
That's tall for a woman! I'm also 5'8" (174 cm, to be exact).
Is it really ? i've met women taller than me. Though i'd say I rather be tall, even though it has it's problems, i like being tall.
I'm 5'8 also and I love it lol I am just scared to stick out in Japan… oh well I already have blonde hair and blue eyes….
Ahhh ladies ladies ❤️ being "tall" and worrying about it is so cute! Imagine what it will be like for me!! (6"3 size 13 shoe haha) But I'm a man though so I guess the hassle is much more for the poor madams.

i've known of chubbier people in japan. i mean, they exist, and there are plenty of them. where do they get their clothes?
Gooood question :/
Whoa... I got a Japanese commercial instead of an American one. You have some scary ass shoes there... Good chikan deterrent :P
And yes, in the US it's Kraft Macaroni and Cheese Dinner.

UGH I KNOW. I thought of that after I got back (T___T)
Never will I make the mistake of not bringing at least 2 pairs of shoes again.
ah it's my birthday today so you uploading this now is sort of a present~~
i really love your channel xx
Happy Birthdaaay!!!
Bad Canadian... Bad Canadian... no maple syrup....ha ha ha...nice going Sharla. Hey great video, nice hair, killer smile at the end of the video....A+
Kraft Mac and Cheese is sold as Kraft Dinner in Canada because of a change in labeling laws that happened around 1980. The old ads referred to it as cheese and macaroni - but the law change required the ingredients to be listed in order of greatest to least - there macaroni and cheese - Kraft changed their ad push to the Kraft Dinner brand after that. Same rule changes forever killed the pork and beans labeling as well.
Your so funny Sharla :D idd bring twenty boxes of lucky charms x3
Omg I love your hair!!!

You look amazing with your hair!
your hair color makes your eyes pop. so pretty
I take some BURT'S BEES lip balms when I go back to Japan as a souvenir for my friends!
