I had just got off work and it was late and wanted to get this Newport NK180 trolling motor mounted ASAP! I'll be doing additional updates on everything from run times, battery capacity, and how it compares to other motors i've owned in upcoming videos.
I've already began testing this motor and battery setup and they both perform flawless. I'm covering more water than I ever have before! Over 15 miles with a quarter tank of gas left!

Tony, thanks for taking the time to make this video. Getting ready to put the NK 180 on my new PA14. Do you really think having the extra steering cables attached to rudder control turning the motor with the rudder is a significant help? Have you tried it with and without the extra steering cables to see how it compares? Would like to hear your thoughts. I probably would not add the extra steering cables if it does not change the overall steering much from just using the rudder itself.
I’ve never installed any motor on my kayak without pairing the controls. I can’t comment if there would be a significant difference though. The Hobie rudder doesn’t displace that much water so you would probably be good without the extra steering cables.
@@VentureTube Thank you for getting back to me Tony. I set it up yesterday and for opted to go no steering controls and try rudder only. I can always add the steering controls later if it seems the rudder is insufficient.
Did you consider Spectra steering cable? I used it on my Slayer Propel steering and it has lasted years longer than Native's original stainless steel cable. I changed my steel cable twice in the first 3 years - Now my SP 13 is 7+yrs old and the Spectra is still looking good. I think Hobie used Spectra on my previous Outback and never gave me problems. I am about to purchase the NK300 for the SP 13 and will likely not mix the motor steering with my rudder steering.
