If you have two valves in line, you can leave your adjustment valve - your needle valve or whatever - set to whatever setting was working last time, and turn the whole flow on and off with the other valve. That way you don't have to go through that adjustment palava each time. Just turn it on and go. If you do need a 'slow rate' and a 'fast rate' you can also set that up with two needle valves and two shut-off valves, but my guess is you don't even need that.
I built a waste oil heater in 1980-81 that I believe is better that the ones I am finding on you tube. I got the idea from Mother Earth News. I also used a electric water heater tank for the body. The burner assembly was made from two 8 inch diameter iron skillets one inverted over the other separated by standoffs . the top skillet had multiple holes drilled through it with broken pieces of fire brick under it in the other skillet. The oil feed dropped from the top and fell through a six inch pipe that had the exit about 1 1/2 inches over the top skillet. It was rated at about 120,000 BTU. worked great. no liquid was burned. Only gas as it vaporized falling down the center tunnel.
I made a oil burner with a smaller water heater, the only thing I did different, was to add a quart of kerosene to a five gallon bucket, it thins out the oil, and it’s light it easier.
First thing I thought, when I saw the thumbnail was Larry the cable guy lost weight, sorry Kevin just couldn't resist. Nice heater, good use of trash appliances.
8:28 Yep..! That's the exact reason why I run needle valves only for all of my burner projects. Heard a lot of people say a 1/4" ball valve will do...NOPE..not going to happen. On my burner for my forge, I can run all kind of fuel, gas or liquid. If it can flow, it can burn. BUT there is one thing to keep in mind..you got to filter your oil and/or install a filter before the needle valve. If you fail to do so, you'll have nothing but trouble with that damned thing.
Lol, what if you have been around enough jet engines? Great videos, I have a 100 pound propane tank that I have been planning to build one out of. Just been putting off having to fill it with water before starting to cut.
A good blower on the cheep and never wears out is the scavenger squirlcage from a 100% effency hearer its what pulls out exsaust gas for 100% heaters . There quite and 100% duty cycle.
Nice build. Thanks. Like idea run oil feed in burn camber, stay cleaner in tube. But.?. Does it get to hot . Hotpiont. To flash oil in tube, if it gets to hot.?
it is the water tank for the hot water heater there is only one tank with heating elements in it it thats been removed but iin it.. there is an pop off valve, water inlet water valve and discharge valve.. at bottom when removed... for tjhtose with those questions
i like this video. Wish you could of shown more of the actual chimney. Is this in your basement? I am going to build one similar but mine will heat a 300 gallon water tank used as a heat sink....so when the burner is off, the water tank will keep on giving. thanks for your video.
My plan also. The boiler will be in the shed, piped hot water to a large 800-1000 gallon tank in the basement for house heat (we have radiant baseboard heaters) and pre-heat for the electric water heater. I expect the water heater to never come on...and will install a water temperature mixer to bring it down to 120f.
Ivan Bentley Claymore I make sure there is plenty of room for air flow and there is a piece of cardboard between the insulation and the blower that keeps the insulation from getting sucked in.
Why not put 2 valves on it? A valve that you can adjust permanently and the second closest to the heater you can use to for shutting heater off? When you want to start it you can just open on and off valve so that waste oil drip stays the same mostly. Also can a second door be added above clean out door that has a glass to watch the fire giving it the illusion of a fire place? Also would it be feasible to use a solar powered fan for the forced air? And if you put a 55 gal drum on a stand just out side of the building on an elevated rack and pipe in oil to a, say 2 or 3 gal container, ( to catch trash and etc. before draining into main container), that could be connected to another 5 gal container slightly below it that actually feeds the fire and it would all work on gravity and to maintain a cleaner area around stove. Your could then fill drum as you received the oil. if you were able to get a lot of waste oil you could then connect more drums where you kept in good supply in case of power outages. Please some one let me know if these things could work because I am collecting materials to build a waste oil heater and would like to make as many mistakes as possible to prevent unnecessary damage to my wallet !!! It couldn't take much!!! Thank You !!!!
Kevin Rushing Thank You Muchly for replying Mr. Rushing even though I made a mistake in my comment stating I wanted to make mistakes and meaning I wanted to make less mistakes as possible! Have a Blessed Day! And thanks again!
+Cricket 2691 Well i burn used veg oil and the thing with that is if it gets cold out it hardens like lard but motor oil and the like would be ok outside i think.
Continued: The incoming air and oil were heated by the output flue at the top and the oil line was coiled around the flue. The instructions should be on Mother Earth News archives.
Tim. I go through about 5 gallons in an 8 hr period. I did have problems with the air fuel feed system so I upgraded it to the system I use on my wood stove conversion. I explain it in detail in my how to video
I redesigned the oil/air feed after that video. Check out my video on how to build it and insert it at the lowest port on the tank. It's much more efficient
@@KevinRushing63 O.K. Thank You I'll make it with the the 3/8 copper pipe running threw the inside of the 3/4 black pipe. Like the wood stove video . Thanks Again
I'd wrp that tank with thin sheet metal and use a squirrel cage fan blowing into it making a forced air system so you can blow the hot air where you need it. Maybe into ductwork and heat a house with it.
If you don't want a blower you'll need to build one of "Mother Earth News" waste oil heaters. In order for the oil to burn clean it require a large amount of combustion air.
Inside Man I suppose but you will need at least a 6 inch pipe and like a wood stove you'll need to go higher than the peak of your roof to get maximum draft
You can save the electricity, as you dont need the fan blowing in there . You can put a hole beneath the burner and when you close the door it causes a draw all on its own .
moe roy I had a gas furnace that worked at night and when I wasn't in the shop. I only run my waste oil heater when I'm able to keep an eye on it. But it kept the shop quite nice. It would get hotter then my inferred gun could measure 600 plus F I think. Glowed red on the side at times.
Good to know people still make mistakes.. This is a great and inspiring video .. Thanks for making it... I learned a lot from watching ..

You don't need a stainless steel pan. You can use a truck brake drum, cast iron kettle/frying pan... etc.
Came to learn how to build an oil burner stayed for the epic dad jokes.

How does the blower get any air all encapsulated in the insulation ? Seems like it will get hot and burn the motor out.
Ivan Bentley Claymore I make sure there is plenty of room for air flow and there is a piece of cardboard between the insulation and the blower that keeps the insulation from getting sucked in.
The shell of the water heater can withstand the heat pretty well?
yeah but you don't want to let it glow red for long

Should you also install a damper on the smoke pipe??
I wouldn't. This isn't a natural draft system.

what is your fuel consumption? do you have any problems with your oil and air running inside the heater chamber?
Tim. I go through about 5 gallons in an 8 hr period. I did have problems with the air fuel feed system so I upgraded it to the system I use on my wood stove conversion. I explain it in detail in my how to video
Hey Kevin
Do I need to use copper for the air feed inside the tank ? Do you think 3/4 Black pipe would work ?
I redesigned the oil/air feed after that video. Check out my video on how to build it and insert it at the lowest port on the tank. It's much more efficient

I Like the idea to have the forced charge air preheated.. Kevinator what about Kelvinator lol.
If the oil pipe from out side to the pen will no black ash inside the pipe.

what is the name of the gel ur using and where can u get it at???
James you can get this gel at your local hardware store. They use it to light BBQ charcoal
what type air motor did you end up using ? the coleman only last about 7 days ??
Coleman. Been using mine part time for three seasons
+Kevin Rushing I used mine for 7 8 hrdays and and burnt out , ??? did that with 2 of them !!!!
I must've got lucky. Mine is still ticking after many, many hours
Try 12 volt boat bilge fresh air pump for ventilation. Quiet
why do you need the blower ? can you use it with just the air intakes open ? thanks ..;)
If you don't want a blower you'll need to build one of "Mother Earth News" waste oil heaters. In order for the oil to burn clean it require a large amount of combustion air.
so If I engineer some extra air intakes for reburn it should be able to function and burn better .;)
Inside Man I suppose but you will need at least a 6 inch pipe and like a wood stove you'll need to go higher than the peak of your roof to get maximum draft
ok My chimney comes out 35 feet ;)
cheers and good luck with your projects ..
The editing for video is halarious...lol..."pause it"
Haha
That nice, funny reader the haters comments.
You can save the electricity, as you dont need the fan blowing in there . You can put a hole beneath the burner and when you close the door it causes a draw all on its own .
This stove isn't designed nor intended for natural draft. If you want to build one check out Mother News
does your chimney go through the roof or wall....is it on its own
I am an appliance repair/heating tech.I own my own business and my shop was an old bakery. My pipe went through an old brick chimney high on the wall.
do you use this as your sole heating furnace
moe roy I had a gas furnace that worked at night and when I wasn't in the shop. I only run my waste oil heater when I'm able to keep an eye on it. But it kept the shop quite nice. It would get hotter then my inferred gun could measure 600 plus F I think. Glowed red on the side at times.
Nobody has answered me on what stops the flame from back feeding up the oil tube
There is no oxygen to support combustion
this is what im worried about aswell
what brand blower did you use and where to buy it please and thank you.
I use a Coleman mattress inflater. It's best to use one that is already broken in. If you use a brand new one it may burn out
@@KevinRushing63 Thank you sir.
Won't that blower overheat inside that bucket with insulation?
It won't if you keep it sucking cold air
Can cooking oils be used in that
Yes it can but it has to be heated prior to ignition because it will jell up when cold
Kevin is that exhaust pipe 4inch or6 inch?
4 inch
@@KevinRushing63 Thanks Kevin.
how do you remove the insulation from the water heater so the tank gives off the heat?
the fan seems like it could be engineered out and run on natural draught
With a larger pipe and complete re-engineering yes it could
What about the smell?
no smell
wow tats all
Darn. I just disposed of my old water heater. I could have taken my powerarc to it and made something.
Careful, it opens a rabbit hole into which I fell three and a half years ago...

You look like Larry the cable guy, btw transmission oil is really toxic to burn
That's what I hear
Sorry i am still alittle lost, doesn't the electric heater have a tank inside to heat water. This looks like you gutted the inside of the heater
+Tonysbigrig I think your right, I belive this is the inner tank from the water heater.

There's only one tank once you remove the outer skin and insulation
