    -From Shahrdad:
One critic wrote that even though Callas had learned the role in less than a week, she sang as if she had sung the role her entire life. This role is so fiendish, and it sits in such a odd spot in the soprano voice that almost everyone chokes on it. Yet somehow, it suited Callas's voice perfectly. Even in the Masterclasses, she could still sing the first aria surprisingly well, her voice sounding almost like her old self. This is vocally by far the most monumental Medea Callas ever sang. Her Scala performances were supercharged as well, but you can already hear a shrinkage of volume and a decrease in power, as Callas had lost a good bit of weight by December. She still sounded great and looked beautiful, like one of the caryatids from the Acropolis. For me, the truest of her Medeas is the Dallas one. She is much more the wronged, tortured woman, the loving wife and mother, at war with the vengeful demigoddess inside her. She was in surprisingly glorious voice (adrenaline rush I'm sure), and she was positively on fire. Florence/Scala/Dallas Medeas for me are the ultimate Callas. I rather expect one day, we might hear a Norma nearly as good as hers, but I seriously doubt there will ever be anyone who sang Medea as Callas did. She owns the role forever.
    Disclaimer - I own nothing

There is only one Medea. It`s the role María was born to sing. No other singer in recorded history could have. No only can she sing it, but her voice seems to have been built for it. Her tone is the only one which fit Medea. No other soprano in recorded history can sound dramatically angry like María. The sad part is that many people seems to focus in that boring Tosca (not her interpretation, but the opera itself is balhhhhhh), leaving aside the REAL gems, the interpretations that made her really one of the most amazing in history (past, present and future).

Medea simply could not be written for anything less than a true Assoluta voice also. Have you heard others try to sing it? It sounds a MESS.
There's something so cinematic about Callas's singing as Medea. So instinctive, with all these unique vocal inflexions that you don't hear in her other roles. The way she negotiates her sound so clearly through this fatalistic tessitura is beyond.

This is sublime, superhuman singing and peerless dramatic truth; she is giving of Herself, fearlessly burning her Assoluta instrument so that we poor mortals may gasp in wonder 70 years later. My late grandmother Cassandra saw her 1961 Epidaurus Medea and l can still remember how she described her to me: although Maria was by then in full vocal decline the audience was utterly mesmerized by this tall feline figure furiously pacing the stage like a panther…

(and he considered Horne's Gargles technique!!! I would add)... and another interview where the interviewer implies something bad about Callas to Nilsson, where Nilsson transforms into a Glacial Spike and tells him: Callas in her good day was better than ALL THE REST of us put TOGETHER!

Pavarotti mistakes it for mezza voce, and Sutherland can't even execute one. Mind you! These people were instrumental in Bel Canto revival. I am not giving this example to denigrate these vocalists. They have left their mark on this world. But, Callas was peerless. In addition to having the greatest technical arsenal under her belt, she used her technique as a means of bringing out the expression in music. I have yet to hear something like her ascending trills in In Mia Man. She is like a dragon spitting fire. Pure genius! It's not even her own ornamentation, she's just singing what Bellini wrote.

This is one of the most thrilling and exhilarating things we human beings will ever hear. Medea is fiendishly difficult to sing and the character is very different from the other heroines of the same time period. It's unreal .. Her voice takes fiendishly scary colours here - full of vengeance , and venom, blood curdling cruelty which oozes out of her chords ... this is monumental. Also , throughout this opera the color of her voice keeps alternating between spinto and dramatic soprano .
Btw , I heard Pasta also sang Medea - not Cherubini's ... but 'Medea in Corintho' .. I found some reviews ..
Henry Chorley saw it in London:
"The air of quiet, concentrated vengeance seeming to fill every fibre of her frame, with which she stood alone, wrapped in her scarlet mantle, as the bridal procession of Jason and Creusa swept by, is never to be forgotten. Where, again, has ever been seen any exhibition of art grander than her Medea’s struggle with herself ere she consents to murder her children? --than her steps to and fro, as of one drunken with frenzy - torn with the agonies of natural pity, yet still resolved on her awful triumph?"

Also this one is as if they're talking about Callas
“the voice followed so closely the inspirations that breathed spontaneously from her heart, that it could never be called twice alike. With Madame Pasta, the same note in two different situations can hardly be called the same note.”

@@LohengrinO one thing I'll never understand is the obsession with 'longevity' and why do people want to preserve their voices till they're 80 . Too afraid to take risks , avoiding /scooping high notes ,singing everything with a voice of a mosquito , everything in one volume, transposing everything upwards because their chest voice doesn't exist , etc. How can people do disservice to the score like that ? If you can't do justice to the role by giving it your all , kindly don't sing it. When a trailblazer like Callas comes along , they are ready to do anything to paint her in bad colors and spread the most malicious lies so that their below averageness doesn't get exposed. Callas was sent by the gods of music to expose these frauds . Who else could sing like Abigaille , Armida , Bolena like her ? It's a shame we don't have her recordings as Brünnhilde and Konstanze. She revolutionised the art of opera and changed our understanding and appreciation of the art forever . Just like all the greats in all the fields , be it chemistry , medicine , sports etc. she too started at a very young age and worked really hard,by putting her heart and soul into the music, and will be reverred till the end . The number of roles she sang in '52 alone is a testament that this woman was from a different space and time. If one worries about 'health' and 'longevity' they can't do things like this. Each and every role she sang is considered the referential recording for that role. Callas is the standard bearer . She is the yardstick. These 'artists' who worry about their vocal chords so much will never be able to come close.

@@mezzosoprano4778 I completely understand the conscious choice someone can make to sing with 100 compromises to preserve the Voice in the later years... it is their voice thus their choice. But to actually try to persuade the world through their fan base that theirs is the correct and descent way of singing, that is just plain fraud

    • @mezzosoprano4778

@@LohengrinO most of the awful singers do try to persuade the world that their singing is the best and they're perfect etc. That's as awful as giving masterclasses and ruining students when one is below average. Our solar system has only one sun and we have only one Callas. Just like how the sun converts the hydrogen in its core to helium (about 4 million tonnes everyday) and radiates heat and light to all the planets revolving around it , Callas brought light into the world by her glorious voice and dramatic abilities . She used all the resources she had to transport us to the Tudor period , Swiss villages , the Gothic period etc. only through her voice . That's why I get really angry when these mediocrinas try to bad mouth her and her legacy. When one's heard Callas , there's nothing else to listen to. Even though it's the singers' choice to take risks or not , I can't help but worship Divina for being the Sun of the operatic world.

Like you, I find this performance mind-boggling. It terrifies me. To watch any tragedy, when a human 'pretends' to be an evil character is terrifying, but to hear Callas actually BECOME Medea - through sound alone - is nothing short of chilling magic. It is beyond analysis. It is like an erupting volcano - utterly irresistible by us poor mortals.
