I so remember myself, my brother and sister taking a bus to downtown Austin, Texas, to watch this classic movie at the historic then movie theater The Paramount..in those days admission was I believe 35 cents..we would get our refreshments with what little we had left from what our beloved mother gave us to go see a movie..I was the youngest of us and in certain scenes as a child of 11, covering my eyes because it was scary to me..those were the days that I will hold close to my heart, how my mom, even though as a single parent raising 5 children, giving exactly 1.50 to the three youngest to go see a movie in downtown Austin..yes, movies like this takes me back to those days..thank you mama, may you rest in heavenly peace..❤

HHSC is such a deliciously dark Southern Gothic melodrama and thriller. I like it as much as Bette's other gem, "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" 💜
Big applause for Olivia DeHaviland and Agnes Moorehead and Joseph Cotten for their stellar work (and Bette Davis, natch). I really should dig the DVD out of the ol' crypt and watch this again.

Aldrich really was a wizard among movie makers, he could direct anything and anybody. And Joseph Cotton had one of the all time great voices.

Loved this. I love this kind of stuff. Did anybody notice the date on the slate board? 9-17-'64. That was the series premiere of Bewitched which co-starred Miss Morehead.

my favorite part of this movie is when the photographer surprises her at the beginning of the movie by taking her picture, when she is dressed in the ratty old gown with her hair a mess, and she screams. He looks so pleased. then at the end, when she realizes that her long nightmare is over, and she is dressed in a new outfit, with her hair and face immaculate, the same photographer surprises her and takes her picture, but this time she poses happily, and he has the same response.

Modern horror movies have too much gore, violence and gratuitous nudity and sex. This film relied on atmosphere and suggestion to set a sinister mood.

stephen groce you can't be friends with someone who only exists on camera...Bette said Joan had to be alone to prepare for each scene...she treated others like servants...bette treated others as equals. When she realized joan was using these illnesses as attention seeking tactics she sniped i thought christian scientists DONT get sick...crawford repaired to the hospital and aldrich got rid of her because he didnt want to pay the hospital bill. Dehavallind was more mature about dealing with davis...she didnt run and hide in a hospital

As great as Bette and Olivia and Joseph were in this film, my favorite performance was Agnes Morehead as Velma. Like Bette Davis she wasn't afraid to not look her best when portraying a character. She looked very similar to Velma when she did the classic Twighlight Zone episode where she played an old woman living alone in a shack and encounters a spaceship of tiny men that turns out to be US astronauts and she is the one living on another planet.
