you know for real that this is utterly bullshit? we can make poems and happy quotes for ever about getting there but in the real world artists and super talented ones struggling to find a job and its been years. I don't represent all of them but also I know many many artists who plus talent are pouring hours and hours of hard work in every aspect but still no hiring.
Can't really get there if you work a lot but have almost no talent - it ain't easy. But she's right it's the long hours sometimes. Other times it's pure talent - i've seen it happen live. Sometimes it's just showing up, and often most importantly building friendly relationships with some clients. I say stop telling your family members or friends that their work is ''omg it's awesome!!'' when it's not. It's ok to be honest sometimes and still encourage people. There's a crazy common habit these days of social media just never wanting to say the truth if it's not positive. And yea i know, my work 'sucks hahaa
Well, it's more accurate to say that if you don't work, you're 100% sure not to get anywhere. But you can work as much as you want, and have talent, it won't matter if you can't live from it. And that's the reality : there are gems and geniuses out there, that will die unknown. Otherwise there would be much mort artists, if you consider we are 7+billions people.
@@thoughts2536 That's not her point. She's saying that many very talented artists assume they will find a career and success simply because they are talented. The reality is, the world is FILLED with talented people in every field. Having talent is not the same as having a disciplined work ethic or dogged persistence. The ones who do manage to establish careers in their fields are those who apply themselves to working all the time and who keep trying to get work, even in the face of difficulty. She doesn't say a successful career will be guaranteed or automatic to anyone, but that an artist who wants and hopes to have a successful career must be persistent and work hard to create even the possibility of a viable career.
Really Nice. Yuko Shimizu is such a nice person. Now I admire even more her work. Hope you guys bring these more oftern. The art of teh Criterion is just one of my favorite things, both as an artis and a movie buff.
I remember writing an entire paper on the symbolism of Godzilla and what he represents. A very interesting creature movie. Godzilla was a huge part of my childhood as well
Descubrí su arte hace muy poco tiempo y fue amor a primera vista, además me gusta que comparta sus procesos creativos ella parece ser una persona muy transparente y generosa
a total sensei, I see how her pieces for this Godzilla project look close to the black and white movie, having a lot of dark in on each illustration, and also her style is totally Japanese in the sense of how I recall the wave styles, lastly some compositions remind me a lot of manga
I know its not the right place to say, but please, please, please: brings Chriterion Channel in Europe! A LOT of people in love for cinema is waiting for this!
She’s one of my favorite artists!! I try to learn a lot from her process for my own art. This was a great peek into her studio and I was sad it was so short. But I want to watch the original Godzilla now haha
I've always loved Godzilla i grew up watching the old ones on channel 5 in L.A.!!! I have the box set!!! Great illustrations Yuko!!! I am an artist also.
Sometimes artists like Yuko don't realize just how talented they are , sort of. It's definitely the work hours, but she might take her wonderful talent for granted . There's a lot of untalented people too - no offense. Some people are just gifted.
I've heard other Artists say the same that it's not all about the talent, and some of those Artists have been drawing since they were kids, so anyone can be an Artist if they want
Very nice. But don't like atomic breath coming from *behind* Godzilla's face. Like some sort of B movie where they put the vomit hose. The previsual rough got it better. And the colors are too trippy. She made her own Godzilla, hey some of us care what Godzilla's design looks like through each movie iteration. The Godzilla design cover makes me think more Heisei inspired than Showa. I thought overall the artwork for the set was a mixed bag. I particularly thought the Aztec inspired piece to be extremely malplaced. Why Criterion?
Work or talent? What's it gonna be? The problem with talent is that it sounds like a brand. A genetic brand. Yeah, you got it kid. The problem with work is that it sounds like brainless repetition. It is really neither. It is deep practice. It is caring so much that you look forward to failing to find out exactly what the problem is. Then you do it again until the neuronal pathway in your brain is myelinated again and again. Now, you're going places.
Going to art school after ten years of corporate life...What an inspiration. It's never ever too late!
So SO inspiring.
"At the end of the day it's the work [not the talent] that will get you there."

The black and white drawings are really great, but man, the coloring really just makes it all fantastic.

LOVE the inclusion of her old workplace photos. Having that previous life in an office is the norm for so many artists, plus, 90s Japan is かっこういい. :-)

bueno bene ficio de la duda.
like later as in what age?
She was around 34 when she started at SVA NYC.
Why'd she draw the 90's Godzilla?
