  • 🇱🇰 MIHINTALE, SRI LANKA - I got a special permission to visit Kaludiya Pokuna Forest Monastery meditation caves where the buddhist monks live. After an interesting talk about Buddhism, rebirth and impermanence, a monk showed me how to meditate. The view of the jungle from up was stunning. Join me and a Buddhist monk as we adventure into one of the most stunning and secretive places in Sri Lanka.

We have seen many calm and peaceful people from all around the world.
The world ranking of most peaceful and friendly people starts with Iceland, Denmark, Switzerland or Finland. But when you travel those countries you don't see any reason to be not peaceful as almost all the physical needs of those people are fulfilled overwhelmingly.
But you travel Sri Lanka some people even don't have wealth to eat three meals a day. The wonder is they are still peaceful friendly, hospitable and giving...

This is a great thought. From my experience, friendliness do not come from wealth but from an innate attitude, it comes from the soul, no matter how hard life is for them

SL has been in the top 5 ranking of the most generous nations globally, before its covid-led economic crisis. The same index ranked China last or near the bottom. There are some other indices that rank generosity that have placed SL 1st/2nd. I think the indices you refer to with the Nordics is concerned with 'happiness'. Well, anyone who has spent any time in Scandinavia will know that it is neither a particularly happy place, nor are its people exceptionally generous. Asia (South, South-East) win hands down.

However, I really appreciate this video as it gave me an idea of what’s happening in an monastery and what sort of meditation practices are followed by those monks. I too meditate but the way how I practice ‘Ana-pana’ meditation is different to the practice that Rev monk explained. Anyway I wish him one day attain Nibbana. Thank you

Also, it has been scientifically proven that Sri Lanka's gravity is low because the thrust in our country is very low. In other countries, it is very difficult to meditate because of the pressure that falls from the sky to the earth. But in our country the gravity is minimal so it is very easy to relax the head to meditate. That is the specialty of our country. Our country is a spiritual country. 🙏

Once you master the 1st meditation at one point you will be ready for the 2nd level . When you practice the 2nd level at some point you will eventually ready for the 3rd level.practice is must and we can’t rush anything to happen it is a process.Once you learn to control your thoughts where you learn to be conscious you will feel nothingness and to be present in the moment .Where you will understand there is no need to worry about past or future. This moment is matters the most. You are conscious enough to do the right thing .And it will brings you the ultimate happiness and satisfaction.Because in this world every thing leads to suffering . Anything won’t last forever, even a stone would be not same in years , and these things we attach ourselves with will make us sad one day as you said your mom also , no matter how loved they are every person thing would make us sad . And this circle will occur again and again until we stop our birth. That’s what arahath did . They don’t have reasons to be born. Where the monk explains cause and reason. Once there are no more reasons to happen things. Theres nothing. It does disappears. When you understand this truth. That’s is the ultimate happiness. But we all trapped ourselves into this rat race wanting more and more and anything won’t satisfy either. Where we struggling and suffering. Cause and reasons are the karma . According to karma we face for the things . We always makes new karma either it’s good or bad . I believe that’s what the monk tries to teach you. When you free from everything with that true understanding life is not a burden anymore you learn to be happy with what you have . It is peaceful. You are so lucky to experience this. I don’t think many are fortunate enough to experience what you experience .Wish you Good luck ❤

While I do really appreciate your work on showcasing such forest meditation centers in Sri Lanka, I would also like to point out a possible downside to it, if you don’t mind. Do you think some viewers might get the idea that these forest meditation centers are tourist attractions and they can visit them anytime just to enjoy the natural beauty there. The meditating monks would not like to attract tourists as that will be a huge obstacle and disturbance to their practice. Just a thought to ponder!

The small new hall, with the ancient stones-Bhante called Sima (sima means border) is to deter meetings. Meetings where are decisions (also concerning the hole community) can be made, need to be in a certain area-in a sima-marked by this stones. But the origin system changed already. It is a kind Organization System designed for a "normadic" society like the buddhist Sangha still is and was even more in the old Days.

There main Monastery is in Polgahawela Mahamevnawa monastery.

Do not eat before meditating. The reason for that is because of the stiffness of the stomach after being full of food, it is difficult to sit meditation asana. As the digestion process takes place in the stomach, breathing becomes difficult, drowsiness occurs, and the body does not feel relax. Due to these missing side effects, it is difficult to concentrate the mind and meditate. That is why they meditate before eating. In Buddhism there is a meditation that is done after meals. It is called walking meditation. This walking meditation can be done after lunch until the food is digested. Let me know when you return to Colombo. I would also like to teach you meditation. 🙏🙏🙏🙏

25:32 "poya ge" (like that such as meaning poya house) is the place where monks confessing for their undisciplined works related bhikku discipline.
For example, a "upasampadha monk" cannot pluck a leaf from a tree.cannot remove the soil of land.
In there, it is necessary to say in front of other monks that something indiscipline has happened by him. Also acting in a disciplined manner and cleaning one's own "sheela" is what happens here.
Lay people cannot join any of these activities.
Here the boundaries are marked with stone pillars (Seema malaka) around the "poya ge" to signify that only the monks inside that boundary participate in these disciplinary rituals.
Inside of this "poya ge" the monks declare to the other monks that they have acquired such as Dhyana and also Arahat.
Because a monk has no right to tell layman or novice monks that he has attained Dyana or arahat.

It's really great to see you are searching for the meaning of life. I would be much happier if the monks were fluent in english to preach you correctly. They have wisdom and knows what they are preaching but when translation happens some information is funneled. Hope you would find good sources to read and understand buddhism. Thripitaka in english would be a great start for you.

around 39 min ----> There they explain the " dependent origination" one of the basic concepts of the Buddha Teaching. Means all phenomena in Samsara are build up on cause and effect (the translate "wrong" cause and reason, what is the same). To simpliefy it in a modern way "the world is build up from subatomar partikels (where shall there be an I, or where shall it come from???) But in a impermanent Environment on can reach maybe a happy state, but it will not last ----> there for it is in the end suffering. Thats why is better not to be. If one removes the causes how building up him/her he also will not be (after dead) again. In the example of the fire, it build up on fuel, air and the proper heat. If you remove only one of these causes, the fire will be extinguished.
