Very cool. I do a lot of crabbing in Newport. Mostly I fish the ocean but sometimes if the ocean is too rough, I stick to bay crabbing. I hit all the buttons here so I should see more of your content in the future. 🤜💥🤛

I started crabbing off that dock in the late 90s it used to be all wood with a big hole in the middle

If you dont have a Cracken crab, you can do the same thing with a big knife. turn crab on it's back, use knife pressue to cut it to the shell and pull legs legs off. done

I'm new-ish to the PNW and VERY new to crabbing, so this video was as helpful as it was entertaining. Just had a quick question as far as etiquette goes. I know that, as an angler, there is no worse feeling than having "your spot" and then having some dude stand right next to you, tangle your lines, and steal your fish. I try not to be "that guy" when I'm fishing, and I want to make sure I'm being courteous of others when I'm crabbing too. How close is too close when you're dropping your pots?

You can be real close. Sometimes the dock is pretty busy. When there are more traps in the area, it can bring more crab.

You did not check for SOFT shell . Big ticket ! In Washington its $600.
Soak for at least 1 - 2 hours to create a chum line. Best way to pick them up is thumb under and on tail and your 4 fingers on top. I have seen people loose fingers grabbing BIG ROCK CRABS by grabbing legs. Be sensible and watch what your doing. 11 and 12 inch rock crabs . They also pinch through bait cages.. and made oval holes to feed through. Please watch kids. We used to be able to fish the hood canal bridge while chum salmon fishing. In one day I saw two Asian guys loose fingers. Pulling crabs out of pots . Just can't pick their noses. Ha Ha ouch! Monster crabs in 125 - 150 foot deep. We used ring pots so if you hooked up a chum salmon you could use the ring to net them. Now they won't let you even fish the bridge sucks bad. The 99 steps to hell!
Ha Ha I say that cos limit on salmon was 4 chum 25lbs to 40 lbs . Carry that with pots and poles and gear up to the car !Thats when the fun starts too. 1/3 of a mile to the car on top of that . Too much fun .

He’s in Oregon and we don’t have to check to see if they are soft shelled. If they are males over 5 3/4” they are keepers.

Well, all you said just goes to show you, that there's idiots everywhere in this world who do stupid things, which generally ruin things for everyone else.
I'm in my mid 60's and I've been crabbing since I was a little boy 8 or 10 years old. I've always picked up crab by the back and never "lost a finger" or anything even close!
Common sense goes a long way, theres no need to over complicate the simple pleasure of crabbing.

This crab pier has been overfished for quite some time due to sand dune recreation tourists and lack of outdoor ethics. I live nearby and continually observe crabbers keeping all they catch regardless of sex or size. Greed hits once many hear the word “crab”.

  • @jmflyer55

I've never seen anyone throw away the body of the crabs they catch.
I've been crabbing well over 50 years and have always cooked the crabs whole. I suppose if you can't use a pot big enough to get the crab in, you have no choice but just saying it seems awful wasteful to throw away the whole body of all your crabs.

@@nomadicfishingadventures4753 in a lot of cases the crab actually die from tossing them it also depends on the height. In Washington you'll actually get a ticket for tossing them.
