I've always cooked crab in sea water from the cooler I take them home in live. Others cook them in tap water. We brought home eight Dungeness from Tillamook Bay this afternoon and I decided to try fresh water. Never again! The contrast in taste is significant. These, boiled twenty minutes in fresh water, were bland and almost tasteless in comparison to crabs boiled in salt water. How do you boil crabs, fresh water or salt? If you've done it both ways, which do you prefer?
I add salt if I can't get ocean water. I also don't keep my keepers in water. I keep them in a bucket or cooler with a wet gunny sack over them. Underwater they'll breathe up all the oxygen in the water and die. If they stay damp, they can breathe outside water. I just dunk the sack in the ocean, and redunk every time it starts to dry out at all.
I've watched hundreds, if not thousands, of fishing and crabbing videos on RUclips over the years, and this video is my hands-down favorite! You are so genuine, articulate, and entertaining. Thanks so much for making this video, and I hope you will make many more. You definitely earned a new subscriber.
Thank you very much. After watching underwater crab videos by The Reef Robber and Oregon Life, I've made modifications to the doors on my crab pots. I'll see if they improve things the next time we go out and maybe make another video.
That dory turned out great! I really like your interior layout. Side benches keep the open utility boat convenience, but the missus has a nice place to sit.
Hello my name is Tom, I’m from Philadelphia. I’m a new subscriber and I think your boat and your set up for cleaning & cooking The crabs is terrific and your boat is perfectly set up everything in its own place it’s one of the best I’ve seen. Looking forward to many more videos....great job Tom

I just love your videos, I am from Texas and recently went to Mosier for the first time, it is so beautiful along the Colombia river gorge! Your engineering of your boat is very smart, very organized. It is my hope to return in the spring and hopefully get to go fishing. Best wishes!
Thank you. I'm surprised and pleased that my crabbing video is so popular. The older I get, the less inclined I am to do things outside in cold, wet, windy weather, but we'll go out again soon or when the salmon in the freezer runs out.
Hey, very resourceful on the machete! Love how you just noticed the devices looked similar and decided to try with your own makeshift device. I gotta say, I'm very impressed with your ability to manage all that camera gear, boat, crab traps etc, editing software even. As an oldtimer who still uses a pocketwatch, you really did well to keep your brain active! I commend your longevity!
@@OregonOldTimer that's honestly a winning attitude. More people should definitely be thinking like that, and not just thinking, but doing just as much, as you sir!
Just built me a place in Oceanside last year and picked me up a boat last week. Now all I need is the hot spot for the crab in Netarts Bay! Great videos!
Before Covid, we often went to Roseanna's for breakfast and always took out-of-town guests there. Oceanside is a nice place. We haven't been crabbing lately. Waiting for nicer weather. Getting soft in old age.
Oregon Old Timer ; We’ll save some for you. I bought a 19’ boat with 34” gunnel height and full canvas so we can go out in more conditions (within reason) and still be comfortable. Like you, I’m more for fair weather, especially since I’m new to fishing/crabbing. I watched your 44” salmon catch earlier...epic battle for that old fish!
@@OregonOldTimer Yes.... we do🤣🤣🤣 I know I’m not just speaking for myself when I say ....’every trip on the water is a different story’ I personally am glad I subscribed 🙌😍
We went out with visiting friends a week ago on a calm, sunny day and in an hour or two caught enough Dungeness to fill our bellies that evening and send plenty home with our guests. Get on out there!
2 years ago but not a lot in crabbing changes. I'm in Calif. and 75. No boat of my own but at least this year my friends boat is running again. MY main crabbing is with crab snares. I really enjoy snaring and would advise you to do it between pulls. It's relaxing and gives you a chance at more crabs. I make all my own snares so it is something else to do in the spring when it cools down. I really like that boat!! I'm not sure who, maybe Thuy at fishing 24-7 shows how to make a pot piller from a cheap 12 volt Harbor Freight winch.
I'm not so far gone that I can't pull pots by hand. Good exercise. My wife likes to use a folding crab trap between pulls. I'm usually content to sit and watch the world around me or read. Dory and trailer are undergoing maintenance right now. Hope to be back on the water in a few days.
I dont eat crab but you almost made me try it lol ...it looked like a fantastic day in the boat and a tasty dinner ...for a beginner at this your sure doing an awsome job at this youtube stuff
Dungeness crab is good, but you gotta boil it in salt water. Preferably sea water. Thanks for the attaboy. Waiting for my good computer to get back from the shop so I can do more.
Thank you for sharing this video. I haven't fished yet for anything from the ocean since moving to Oregon last summer. I turn 50 in a few months and I would like to try some new things in my life. I am intrigued about perhaps looking to own a boat and trying this someday. Any tips on what to look for when looking for a simple boat? If I buy a used one, what should I be looking out for? In a few weeks, I'm going to start out slow and start with clamming maybe along Netarts Bay when the tides are at their lowest. Perhaps my interest will peak into other related activities such as crabbing and also fishing but as my life is now heading towards past the half-century mark, I think these are things that I could learn to enjoy as I get older and closer to my retirement years.
Where did you move here from? For a recreational crabbing boat, roominess and stability are critical. Crab pots take up a lot of space. You'll be hauling them in over the side, so you definitely do not want something tippy. A young man drowned just last week in Nestucca Bay when he and two others capsized a small boat while crabbing. Spend the money for an automatic, inflatable life vest and wear it. If you rely on the standard, bulky style, you won't wear it all the time.
We were on the ocean Thursday afternoon. Dropped two crab pots near the CG boat house on the way out. Picked up one when we came back in. Don't know who beat us to the other one.
Hands down for sure best way is to boil or steam them in seawater whole. Cleaning them before cooking removes the butter and a lot of flavor. The saltwater just gives them a fresh taste of ocean. Only spice needed is the ocean. Dip in garlic butter if you want but it is not really needed.
@@OregonOldTimer we got out Saturday and got 22 in 3 hours, most were soft shell but still put food on my table for my family. Cook in sea water and whole crab to keep its flavor and sweetness.

I wanted to keep the center open, but side bench seats make pulling crab pots more difficult than if they weren't there. But I'm not complaining.

Hey there old timer. Im in mcminnville. If you need a good solid deck hand who has hemis sea legs. Let me know. I work for free....kinda lol
I have all the crew I need, but thanks for the offer.
What month was this filmed?
I think it was June. It was unusual to have so many hard-shell crabs that early. Two years ago.
Normally what I'm doing when i'm crabbing, cuz I'm throwing a line in the water for some cod or whatever else will hit my line.
Your better of snaring when waiting for the pots than using that clam shell dohiky.
If you cooked them in tap water. You should have put a couple of cans of beer in it.
What? Waste beer? Sea water is cheaper and not fit to drink.
