I live in a big city with public transportation, so I sold my car years ago and rent a car every month for a few days to run errands, meet up with friends and attend events outside my local area. I use the same location, so the staff knows me and always provides excellent service. Also, my credit card provides auto insurance so I can decline expensive rental coverage.
I own an older Toyota Camry LE in pristine conditon, costs me $50.00 a month for insurance, oil change $29.00 a year oil change, never more than $64.00 for petrol, I bet your method costs you more than I spend!

If you live in one of those special cities, you may also qualify for a Senior Pass, which saves even more.
Apply at the transit agency. Although the paperwork is daunting (like filing your taxes) it can be worth it.

Reverse mortgage is not for everyone as I mentioned. and I recommend only experts in their field, without any expectation of compensation.
