In this DCS World Simulator video I continue me training in the F14 Tomcat, I'm fighting against Mirage2000 flown by SHARP (Thank you so much buddy, that helped a lot). I'm starting to get more comfortable in the F14 Tomcat and that allows me to try more advanced stuff with it. Hope you guys enjoy!
That last round was straight lethal. Awesome Split S implementation. Round Three was excellent as well, keep going man your merge fights are getting very, very good.
Being a huge fan of doing BFM in the Tomcat I also find that it rewards hyper aggressive maneuvers (as long as you know how to control the nose at high AoA). I've even done 1-circle type pulls in a 2-circle fight to keep a threatening position on a plane that would otherwise outrate me.
The early pressure -> get the opponent slow -> convert to two circle and rate them (at your ~100kt lower rate speed) scheme is a classic Tomcat gameplan!
God this was a nail-biter! Anytime i see a video where the enemy is a Mirage and the aircraft used is a ratefighter im automatically nervous, but just as always, it was entertaining and well-done.. nice one man!
I love how you and Growling Sidewinder explain all your maneuvers as you're fighting. Both of you are supremely good, but have very different teaching styles. So y'know what you and Growling Sidewinder oughtta do? Have a train-off. Each of you find a green student to coach, pick a plane, pick an adversary, and you have six weeks to turn that greenie into a fighter ace. Then have the two students dogfight each other and see who's the better instructor! Wouldn't that be cool? It'd be like Karate Kid, but with multimillion dollar fighter aircraft.
I think they do well at live debriefing, but sometimes they talk so much that you can see them play a much more distracted match, so much so that they don’t even execute what they say they will. A little explanation is good, but a constant monologue makes for a worse demonstration. There’s little point in explaining a fight you want to have while executing a fight you don’t want to have. The brain remembers words but experiences overrule words.
The vertical rate fight is definitely great against deltas, like the Mirage and -21, F-4 drivers used it to great effect in Vietnam, they definitely enhanced that capability with the Tomcat, knowing that they'd face those same jets if the war kept going, it stopped just as they were entering fleet service. Would love to see one here in their white livery, from the 70's!
That's the problem with delta-winged jets. Almost like Pugachev's Cobra, they dump energy fast when G's are put on their wing, slowing them down quickly compared to a straight-wing plane. If you're in a delta-wing and you have a good eye for aim, the world is your oyster. But if you take you shot and miss, that pilot in the straight-winged fighter is going to have more energy options and is liable to eat your lunch for you.
The mirage can be a real tough nut the crack sometimes. When they get a good offset rater going it can be spooky. Its kind of hard to tell if its kicking your ass or about to die sometimes.
Hey LongShot, I just found something out that might interest you - when playing as RIO in Heatblur's F-14, you can reach forward and disarm the pilot's ejection seat, and then pull the loud handle to turn the Tomcat into a single-seat convertible, just like Jester is wont to do when he gets nervous. (You can't normally do this via the CMD EJECTION lever, because the RIO-only setting is bugged). Might be a useful thing to have in your back pocket in case the pilot's sassing you. On a *totally unrelated* note, any plans to do another "two idiots" video with GS in the near future? :V :V :V
it is absolutely insane how much skill you have i wish i could fly the f14 a tenth as good as you :) p.s. the visibility really is shit when youre trying to line up a shot huh
Hey LongShot. In Vietnam, The Phantom was no match for the MIG-21 above 15,000ft. It was the same story for the British Harriers in the Falklands against the Mirage III. That Delta wing is unmatched up high. Secondly, I have never seen anyone in the DCS community post vides of "How to Boom 'n Zoom". We see it with the FW-190 in IL-2. Would be awesome to see you create a Boom n' Zoom series for us. Boom n' Zoom works best when the attacker has high thrust and the defender lower thrust, allowing the reposition for the attacker to remain fast and above... the defender struggling to regain energy for another turn, to avoid getting gunned. Is it possible to Boom n' Zoom a M2000 in the Tomcat? At altitude I would almost say "no" but below 5000 ft I might say "yes". The M2000 does accelerate well so at what altitude should the Tomcat begin its next vertical attack? Here is an idea... create a new Boom n' Zoom series and let us know. The F-4 beat the MIG-17 using Boom n' Zoom tactics. Would be great to see different set ups. 1v1 is nice but 2v1 is ideal. I recall reading a WW2 engagement where the P-51 pilot was Boom n' Zoomed by 2 BF-109s. The 109s timed their attacks perfect, preventing the P-51 from running away or regaining its energy. The P-51 pilot initially thought he was fighting a single 109 as the 109 would use the vertical disappearing into a cloud, only to have it reappear almost instantly coming back down for another vertical attack. After a few attacks by the 109, he soon realized it was a pair of 109s. Cheers from Edmonton... McDavid FTW!
The Boom and Zoom concept doesn't really work against evenly matched jets, and definitely doesn't work when Fox 2s are available. Although the concept of energy management is important for all dogfighting.
@@benaguilar1787 Agreed. If two F-5s can trap an F-16 (200kts) with BnZ, they have a chance, and a trapped F-16 with Fox2s (9M/L), which cannot move its nose aggressively around, could meet its demise, so long as the F-5s zoom back up at the F-16's 6 o'clock. This concept works best at low level where the defending aircraft is unable to dive away to regain its energy. This means the attackers press/execute the Boom very high aspect (45-90 degrees). Would make for a great exercise. How about 2, MIG-15s BnZ an F-15 low level? Could it work???
Yo LS, great job working with the Cat. That mirage was slippery. Charlie talking to LS...Aircraft 1 performs a split S, That's the last thing you should do...what are you thinking at this point, LS you don't have time to think up there, if you think your dead. LOL like if you get the reference. Thanks for the video. Have a pleasant day. Cheers.
Question about the F14...With the wings swept, does it not fly like a delta wing? Could you pull the same type of slow speed maneuvers as the mirage? Also, why does your pilot not have a head?
I would guess its because sweeping the wings back moves the centre of lift rearwards, thereby making the plane essentially 'nose heavy', which would decrease the authority of the elevators in pitch. This was the reason that the glove vanes were initially used, ie to bring the centre of lift back closer to the centre of gravity, thereby giving the elevators more authority. A modern true delta has a much more rearward centre of gravity, ie the centre of lift is not so far back from the centre of gravity- in fact, the centre of lift is in front of the centre of gravity, thereby giving the elevons a lot of pitch authority for very little movement. This also improves its sustained turn to a degree compared to an aerodynamically stable equivalent (think kfir or cheetah c) since large upward movements on the elevons are not necessary when the pilot pulls back on the stick-large upward movement on the elevon will decrease overall lift. I hope that makes sense.
Nice flying! The Mirage is such a tricky opponent. Flying dorrito and whatnot. Does the F14 gain any advantages (AoA or otherwise) if you tuck the wings in? Or would it just be detrimental to you?
The nose becomes easier to control with the wings pulled back but you lose the massive lift generating ability the Tomcat otherwise has (even without flaps)
Can't wait to see an F-106 in DCS, then you will see what a delta can really do in a gunfight. The Six was a beast, and even carried missiles with nuclear warheads, to lob into Soviet bomber formations, coming over the poles over Canada. Rated for 12+ G so it could escape the blast radius. Shoot and scoot, capable of super cruise nearly 40 years before the Raptor.
I honestly dont know where you guys get your M2000 pilots, they always seem to let themselfes be dragged to the ground without any sign of struggle. Do they not have any experience in the machine they are flying ? A F-14 shouldnt be a big deal for a M2000 to shoot down.
Why are you wings swept, full burn at the merge? Honest question, I am brand new to dcs but I always thought you'd want to be around 350kn to maximize turn rate.

Remember, according to Lemoine, your RIO is your last CM flare. Ejecting Jester can be use as a decoy. 🤣
Decoy hell...
Eject him into the other plane and FOD its engine.
We'll call it a "FOX lolwtf"
That's why he always ejects in a tough spot, he's trying to save you
@JenkemSuperfan
Yeah, he's a pretty selfless guy.
I heard he vollenteers at soup kitchens and brings toys to sick kids.
Give jester a stinger manpad for the ride down.
Not in a Tomcat, sadly..command ejection punches out both crew and the single canopy..

Lol why not dogfighting them both instead teaching new studenst? I think Cobra would be destroyed, he dont fly that much the Tomcat
Nice thumbnail, I know it takes more work than people know in creating a good thumbnail
Thank you!
This was a way more interesting fight than I thought it would be.
Awesome! Fight the Tomcat's fight and you can beat even the Mirage! Well done, LongShot!
great fights! very cool to see the different tactics of the two airframes, it's like a chess match.
Great video....felt like I was in the cockpit with you and jester!

I love that 4th round. Very short and intense. Brilliant timing on that Split-S maneuver!
The last merge was exquisite. Top notch Sir.
That split-s in round 4 was awesome. Thoroughly entertaining flying!
That last round was beautifully flown. Aggressive, intelligent, skilled piloting.
Great job, LongShot of using the Tomcat's strength to your advantage!
Looks like you totally have it nailed now - Round 4 was great!
watching you learn the F14 is fascinating. i plan to get a PC this year and after a year of watching i can see i have a steep learning curve ahead 😅
seeing longshot dogfighting a mirage is awesome 😎👍 more improvements to come!.
That opening shot was awesome.
Crazy fights! Mirage is a slippery bird. Round 4 was so quick and on the money. LS, you got to get used to that Tomcat FOV. ;D
Will there ever be a sexier fighter jet than F-14 ?? For longest time this once was the only master peace you want to be in.
Awesome job in that last round LS!
Thank you
Sound ass kicking in round 4, LS!. Round 3 was awesome too.
Great fight, love watching the Tomcat pounce on her prey. Thanks for the entertainment.
Thanks!
I used to love those vids when you had GS in the backseat!
Finally! Someone taking on the Mirage with the Cat
I'm surprised you didn't run through the manual to restart the surviving engine in that flat spin, but might have been too little too late lol
You worked hard for that one.
my first time watching this channel - i otherwise have only seen growling sidewinder.

Great video as always. Lots of action. I'm an Archer fan so more like Sploosh than splash. My BDay today and was hoping to see 2 Morons again.
The mirage can be a real tough nut the crack sometimes. When they get a good offset rater going it can be spooky. Its kind of hard to tell if its kicking your ass or about to die sometimes.
Very nice adaptation for the fourth round!
Thanks
Considering that the Tomcat was mainly a bvr platform that's great flying

I think in that second round you probably hit a hydraulic line which took out his controls.
I wish I had your skills in dogfighting Longshot! But after 30+ years of combat flight simulators, I dont think it will ever happen... ;)
yeah that last fight was great 🙂
Nice fights 😊🎉
Round four was worth it.
Beautiful...
great pilots, both
Do a dogfight with the tomcat but only using one of its engines
Why not use the "Diff Thrust", it's a legit tool now?
